A community full of great people and giving back Phew! What a year! North Kamloops was action packed with community spirit from January to December. Things kicked off with the Interior Saving Unplug and Play School Challenge, which encouraged more than 5000 young students to reduce their recreational screen-time from January 25 to 29. The Big-Top Circus themed ABC Family Literacy Day was hosted by Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative (KELLI) at the Henry Grube Education Centre on January 23 and included story song yoga, musical performances, storytelling, puppet theatre, live theatre, interactive stations, crafts, face-painting and gymnastics. Party time!

Echo delivery staff (L-R around table) Marilee Manning, Wayne Kulchyski, Justin Lean and Joe Akram enjoyed an afternoon of goodies at the Echo staff lunch on December 15. Without this team, we couldn’t bring you the good news each week!

What a year on the North Shore! – continued from front therapeutic horseback riding to individuals with disabilities. In addition to their programs for people with physical and psychological disabilities they also offer equine assisted therapy lessons to youth at risk in our community. Overlanders Day was hosted in McDonald Park and offered a full day of family friendly activities. Following the event, the North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) and the Canadian Cancer Society hosted a certifiably Canadian event: a live screening of The Tragically Hip’s last concert of their final tour in Kingston, Ontario. Steven Puhallo of the NSBIA says, “Attaching the concert screening to Overlanders Day was an easy decision. The gathering is for a sad reason, but the community is gathering for all the right reasons.” As for the band—this final performance became an immediate touchstone in Canadian history. Sandra Frangiadakias, coordinator of the Gleaning Abundance Project (GAP), a food action program of the Kamloops Food Policy Council, apologized for

not getting to every single apricot tree in Kamloops. “Can we sneak that into the story?” she said with a laugh. One of the greatest challenges for GAP, which runs from July 1 to October 31, is keeping up with the demands of prolific growth and abundant fruit. There were over 300 volunteers hosting harvest parties in the backyards of homeowners with fruit trees, but there was just more trees than time and people. GAP is always on the look out for new ideas and volunteers are always welcomed. The 9th Annual Kidney Walk took place on September 25 at McDonald Park. The family friendly event was a brisk walk in the park, as well as a day of remembering past participants. It was also a day of raised awareness regarding the “silent killer” kidney disease. BrewLoops festivities ran from September 28 to October 2 and offered a wide variety of tastings, classes, parties and adventures. The Block Party was held September 30 in the Red Beard parking lot and spilled out onto Tranquille Road. Mitch Forgie, owner of Red Beard Café, said of this event,

“This is a big high energy party you won’t want to miss.” There were three musical acts performing on the parking lot stage, as well as food trucks, unique food specials, unique one-off beers and special casks. It was one heck of a Block Party! Mitch said, “These grass roots arts events are well supported by the public.” Halloween was a hoot on the North Shore with the NSBIA’s 4th Annual Treat Street on October 31, the 11th Annual Pumpkins of Light Festival was held by Open Door Group’s Gardengate Horticulture Program, and Tranquille Farm Fresh had another remarkable year with their tunnel tours, as well as their Corn Maze Extravaganza and Dr. Padova’s Haunted House. Thompson Community Services (TCS) completed their second annual 12 Days of Giving, which has quickly become one of the favourite events of the TCS’s yearly programming. Megan Seery, TCS employment counsellor, describes the “whole hearted” event as an “opportunity to get TCS supported individuals together, so they can give back to a

community that has been so generous to them.” 12 Days of Giving focused on spreading Christmas cheer and a charitable spirit through gifts and gestures “to the marginalized populations and other community organizations”. TCS encouraged their clients to collaborate on random acts of kindness, connect with the community, engage with others, and share their hobbies and crafts. It’s an uplifting experience for all involved, “it’s not only the generosity and kindness that our individuals displayed to community members, but it’s also the [positive] responses from the community,” Megan said. The 4th annual Christmas Open House was held at Wilson House and Christmas came to Brock Shopping Centre. To heighten the holiday spirit further, the NSBIA also hosted the 2nd annual Spirit of Christmas decoration competition. North Shore businesses were encouraged to join in on the fun. Best wishes to everyone for a bright, shiny and healthy 2017. Make a resolution to get out into the community and enjoy all that the North Shore has to offer! Alicia Ashcroft, freelance

A year of fun and adventure It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. It’s been a great year and a busy time. I started playing my violin again and joined a fiddle club. I am taking intermediate swim lessons. With my daughter Aurora taking lessons I thought it would be nice to refresh my skills. Over the year, my husband and I got into the habit of having regular date nights with the “Passport to Love” that I gifted him last Christmas. Each month, we “traveled” to a different place in the world. In June we trekked to Australia, a.k.a. Kangaroo Creek Farm in Lake Country, BC, where we were surrounded by wallabies, kangaroos and even got to hold a tiny, precious joey! In July we went to a place we’ve been meaning to get back to for a few years to ride the Kaoham Shuttle in Lillooett, BC. The railbus travels along scenic Seton Lake to the historic rural community Seton Portage that is only accessible by the railbus or a mountain gravel road. It’s been named Canada’s greatest hidden rail trip. If you decide to go, the railbus makes a return trip for tourists on Fridays only. During the summer, we took a family trip to Kootenay Lake to visit my parents, brother and nephews. Aurora calls her grandparents’ cabin

the “tree house”. In October, I went to my sister’s bachelorette party on Catalina Island in California. What a neat place! The houses are all tiny and packed together and the residents drive golf carts. My brother and sister-in-law generously ferried us all by yacht. Getting to hang out with my family, sister and her friends was a blast! Besides traveling all around we enjoy all that Kamloops offers. Last winter we spent a lot of time sledding at Singh Bowl. The summer brought us out to Music in the Park, the Kamloops Farmers Market and Project X’s Wizard of Oz at Prince

Charles Park. We met the Moose Squadron at the Kamloops Airport open house, explored magnetism at the Big Little Science Centre and picked pumpkins from the farm in the fall. My family received some big news this year. We’re expecting a baby brother for Aurora in March 2017. While she is excited to be a big sister I’m a little terrified of having two children! I’m always grateful to hear that someone loves reading the Echo. Best wishes for a happy new year filled with health, happiness and spectacular success! Erin Johnson, graphic design

Best holiday wishes from the North Shore Business Association It’s great seeing the Christmas lights and Christmas trees shining in our neighbourhoods and from our living rooms. It’s the time of year that we celebrate with fun holiday events that help bring our community together. We encourage everyone to shop close to home and support our great North Shore businesses this holiday season. Make sure you check out the Christmas decorations on our business storefronts! Our ‘Spirit of Christmas’ decoration competition is in its second year and we are excited to see the great Christmas and holiday decorations it brings to our North Shore business area! It’s been great to see our North Shore businesses and neighbourhoods getting into the spirit of giving. We’re incredibly proud and thankful for the great community spirit we enjoy. Let’s celebrate this time by making a habit of giving and of spread-

ing joy. Whether it’s presents under the Christmas tree bringing laughter and joy to children, to donating your time or resources to a worthy cause. Let’s challenge each other to find one true way to give this season. Whether it’s for the food bank, a gift drive, a fundraiser, helping the homeless, an orphanage in the

developing world, or helping to shovel the driveway of someone who can’t; seek out and find a way to give. Make it a habit of caring and bringing joy to the lives of others this holiday season and keep it going into 2017! The type of community we build and live in is up to all of us. Let’s show who we are, and how much we care. We wish you joy and health this holiday season, from our businesses, commercial property owners and our Board of Directors and staff, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Make sure you sign up for our e-newsletter and follow our Facebook page to stay in touch about our events and initiatives (www. nsbia.com). We are the North Shore and we’re excited about what 2017 will bring! Merry Christmas, Steven L. Puhallo, executive director, North Shore Business Association

“I am the one thing in life I can control” What a year. It’s been like living in the Twilight Zone on an intersection of a Margaret Atwood novel, by way of George Orwell. Admittedly, my year began rather beautifully. Day drunk in New Zealand, sand between my toes and whatnot. Holiday me is my most fabulous self. She is fun, good humoured, wears flowing dresses and big hats, eats passionately and enjoys long walks on the beach. It felt like the holiday was never going to end and suddenly, the plane is landing in Vancouver. I’m listening to Adele’s Hello and grimacing mournfully towards the grey skies and slick tarmac. Back to work. Back to routine. Goodbye holiday me. Hello hellish chill of January. After 14 plus hours of flight and airport purgatory time, no matter how badly you want to cling to those bright and shiny holiday feelings, all you want to do is just get home. Entering baggage claim with

I’m not here to spout political diatribes, we all have our opinions and I respect that. On the night of the election, I was prepped with a nice bottle of pinot to toast the first female president. By the time Clinton’s campaign manager quietly invited everyone to go home, I was drunk and ugly crying on the couch. Not because a woman didn’t win, but because such a vile, ignorant, bigoted, misogynistic beast did. What the future holds, no one knows. We bank on 2017 being a better year and there’s nothing guaranteeing that. What can we bank on? If I may be so bold and to borrow a quote from Wait for it, from Hamilton: “I am the one thing in life I can control.” Yup, that’s it, that’s all. It’s so simple. You control you. You control how you react to and how you receive the best and the worst. When you catch yourself sinking in the quicksand of hopelessness, ask yourself: what can I do better?

2016: Better than expected! It always seems like a challenge to think of the things that happen each year to write about. Especially after having to do this for over five years now! 2016 has felt like a blah year for some reason, but in reflection a lot of awesome things have happened for me. In March, I went to Penticton to see Megadeth and Suicidal Tendencies in concert and had the best time! Here in Kamloops I saw a few shows as well, including Anti-Flag, Bif Naked and Coleman Hell. This spring, I rediscovered my artistic side when a friend talked me into entering the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s Art Alley. Painting among actual artists was a little intimidating but fun at the same time. Having a Red Collar beer afterwards took the edge off, though. In July, a few friends and I started doing drawing challenges and posting our drawings on Facebook, which has not only been a lot of fun but also good practice. I didn’t go on a holiday anywhere this year but after trading my boys’ old trampoline for a friend’s old tent trailer, my son and I went camping for the first time together. It was a nice addition to my love of the great outdoors and new love of paddle boarding. Exploring many of the lakes and back roads in the area has been a fun adventure and has felt way too overdue since I’ve lived in

North Shore echo

December 21, 2016 n 11

echo stargazer Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It may have felt like the fates were out to get you in 2016 as unexpected events stripped away cherished perks you’d been accumulating. But there’s a lesson hidden within the struggle. Love wants you to shine from within. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) This holiday season you’ll be attracting money and venturing back into the public spotlight. Don’t hog another’s thunder. You’re on a roll but you’re not the only sign that’s shining. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) With the ship finally floating again, it’s time to set course and get going. For Aquarius, the holidays aren’t about down time. You have an opportunity to reconnect and plot your destiny for 2017. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) A boost of energy lifts humble spirits and marches you into the holidays with a “look at what I’ve just accomplished” attitude. Shine brightly and love will reflect your efforts. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The holiday spirit helps to heal old wounds and boost the love energy all around you. Get out and have some fun. Love is favouring a social Aries. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Vacations are supposed to be a time of rest and recuperation but you’re fretting details and worried about work. Do the rounds and say hello to old friends. Their success holds secret keys to open new doors. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Love is waiting on a distant shore but travel might not be possible. Find another way to reach out and show your love. Creativity returns big rewards. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Sparks begin to sizzle as you say yes to a holiday romance. The heart is yearning for some home time so invite the gang over and see who tags along. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’re talking a good game but love wants more. Action is the signal that love is waiting for. Double check expenses as holiday bills begin to pile up. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’re entering a creative cycle, which will bring a lot of fun into your day. Go easy on a loved one who asks for something unusual. Friends reflect back the change in your outlook. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) The holidays can be emotionally draining for a giving sign like yours. Even as the hustle and bustle begin to peak remember to take time for yourself to appreciate how much you’ve matured and to set new goals in love. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) The holiday spirit favours those who wear smiles. Just because you’re tired and emotionally reflective this week doesn’t mean you can’t share in the joy that’s practically begging you to play.
