Hello 2016! So much in store for the North Shore! Another year has come and gone and 2015 was very busy with many milestones and events that enriched the City of Kamloops. From January to December, there was so much to see, do and celebrate! In commemoration of the millionth animal that would be adopted in 2015, the BCSPCA launched their Million Acts of Kindness Campaign. It was a wonderful way to kick off the New Year and celebrate such a worthwhile organization. The 2015 Special Olympics BC Winter Games took place February 19 to 21. More than 600 athletes and 200 Volunteer staff came from all over the province. Many events were hosted on the North Shore at McArthur Island Sports and Events Centre. Earth Hour took place on March 28 and the City of Kamloops celebrated with a free double feature and donations for the Kamloops Food Bank were collected. – continued from front ing on the Tranquille Sanitarium’s closure in 1957. The show was wildly popular with over the 50 to 60 performances and well over 2600 guests experienced the tour. Brittany McCarthy, artistic associate of Chimera, says of her second year with Tranquille: “it’s endlessly fascinating, you think you know everything about Tranquille and then new secrets are revealed”. After a period of grueling commutes, the Overlander Bridge was finally completed. Drivers everywhere rejoiced! Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative International (KELLI) hosted an International Children’s Day celebration on November 20 at Northills Mall. River City Gymnastics, Kamloops Princess Parties, Big Little Science Centre, Drummer Dave and Mother Goose came out to enjoy the festivities. The North Shore was brightly lit with Christmas spirit as there was plenty of holiday cheer spread around. North Shore businesses were encouraged to decorate their storefronts and the Christmas open house at Wilson House on Tranquille was a big hit! The community offered many fun and friendly events that celebrated and encouraged diversity and inclusion. The team at the Echo wishes the very best to residents and businesses of the North Shore in 2016 and beyond! Alicia Ashcroft, freelance

Another highlight to the year was a trip to Vancouver to see Jon Bon Jovi. He is my most favourite musician and quite possibly human being ever; ask anyone who knows me. It was an emotional roller coaster, as they had to cancel the event due to issues with the event organizer. I was going with my co-worker Erin, who had never seen him perform; I have seen him a few times, but I was still devastated. At the last minute everything was a go, and there was lots of clapping and jumping with that news. I knew Jon would not let down his fans; he is just not that type of guy. So Erin and I headed to Rogers Arena where they had everything worked out like a welloiled machine. In the end we had fantastic seats because we snuck into the VIP section like teenagers, we were so close I could see Jon’s pearly whites! It was different than a traditional Bon Jovi concert as he played with the Kings of Suburbia and they did not disappoint. I am hopeful for a 2016 concert. Wishing all my friends, family and clients a very Merry A few favourite Elf on the Shelf Christmas and Happy New Year! ideas we’ve seen! Jodi Lawrence

Year in review

A year of gratitude It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. It seems with everyone being so busy day-to-day we don’t realize just how quickly the weeks and months slide by. It’s ironic that all the technical gadgets we have to make our lives more efficient seem to make us all busier than ever. 2015 marked the first full year at the helm of Edge Publishing for me. I must say that in my career in the publishing world that began in the ‘80’s (yes, I’m that old!) 2015 has definitely been one of the most satisfying. We at the Echo have a tremendous staff that brings their best efforts to the office each and every day. Of course that includes lots of fun and laughter along the way. As I have mentioned to them on many occasions “I wouldn’t be here without you”. I know this to be a valid statement, as once in awhile they will remind me of this. It tends to keep a guy humble. Of course we could print all the newspapers we want but unless we didn’t have them delivered to our neighbourhood friends there would be no point. Our delivery specialists are an amazing team that bubbles over with enthusiasm. Most have challenges of their own to overcome however you wouldn’t know it. Their loyalty and can-

do attitude bring a ray of sunshine to our places of delivery each week. I also know this to be true as on the few occasions that I did the delivery routes, I would very often be queried on the whereabouts of the regular delivery person. Followed by a quick “we just love…” It leaves me with a very gratifying feeling. I would like to thank our many loyal clients – again, without whom we

them new business. Another irreplaceable piece of this equation are our loyal readers. If I had a dime for every time someone mentioned how they look forward to the next edition of the Echo – well, you know where I’m going with that. Once again, it makes one appreciate how great our product is and how it resonates throughout our community.

The Judge’s tie At a clearance sale, the wife of a federal district court judge found a green tie that was a perfect match for one of her husband’s sports jackets. Soon after, while the couple was vacationing at a resort complex to get his mind off a rather complicated cocaine conspiracy case, he noticed a small, round disc sewn into the design of the tie. The judge showed it to a local FBI agent, who was equally suspicious that it might be a ‘bug’ planted by the conspiracy defendants. The agent sent the device to FBI headquarters In Washington, DC for analysis. Two weeks later, the judge phoned the Washington office to learn the results of their tests. “We’re not sure where the disc came from,” the FBI told him, “but we discovered that when you press it, it plays ‘Jingle Bells.’”

GIVE THE GIFT OF A GREAT

NIGHT OUT!

Erin visiting M&M World. Inset: Rory and her mama share a selfie.

A year full of new experiences Merry Christmas everyone! This year has been exciting and full of learning. My daughter has entered the terrible twos but she’s really not that terrible, most of the time. I have learned that giving five-minute warnings to prepare her for a change in activity works wonders! If not, I am guaranteed to experience the tantrum. It has been amazing to watch my daughter progress from using one or two words to full sentences. She makes us laugh everyday with her imagination. Her favourite joke is to say, in a hushed tone, “Dinosaurs are coming.” One highlight of my year included a trip to Las Vegas in June. This was the first time I had been away from Rory more than a day! I prepared her (or perhaps myself) by reading How to Babysit a Grandma. My husband and I had a grand time. I relaxed by the pool the first day, Carrot Top handed us a shot of Crown Royal during his show. If you go, sit in the front row. One evening we saw Tournament of Kings, a dinner show with joust-

ing knights, dancing maidens and Cornish game hens. In August, Jodi and I traveled to Vancouver to see Jon Bon Jovi in concert. That was an amazing show! In September my family attended the geocaching event ‘Gold Country Cache For Gold’. The four-day journey began in Lytton and ended in Merritt with prizes, games, hiking and adventure in between. Recently, I started Pound classes at Let’s Move Studio and I love it! It’s a cardio workout including squats, lunges, jumps and stretches, all the while drumming along with Ripstix to rock and pop music. In retrospect, 2015 has been a great year and I have a lot to be thankful for. A healthy family and home, Children’s Circle Daycare for providing outstanding care and early learning for Aurora and a wonderful place to work with the best coworkers I could ever ask for. May everyday of the New Year glow with good cheer and happiness for you and your family! Erin Johnson

Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) There’s no rule that says you have to go out and party even if it’s the holidays. 2015 was a busy year and you’ve come farther than you realize. Take a break and enjoy some time away from the world. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’re working extra hard to finish projects before you step out for fun but a snag in the paperwork will keep you at the office. When you finally do meet up with friends you’ll find open and receptive arms. Everyone already knows you like to work late anyways. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Someone at a distance who once had your heart now has your wrath. It’s not like they did anything on purpose but you don’t have the time for casual nonsense either. A career goal is within reach. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) The social circle has you in the spotlight helping out at the office. It might feel like an obligation forced upon you at the worst time but it’s actually a surprise blessing to show the team another side of your brilliance. Love is encouraging an exotic adventure. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Love has you hooked into the mysterious and unusual. With a bit of investigation and a little Aries aggression they can be yours. Be creative and don’t let the opportunity pass. You can be game changers for each other. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The Moon will have your heart watching your pocket book and wondering how you can afford that next gift but love continues to look your way, asking when you’re going to say hello. 2015 was a great year for learning some difficult lessons in love but class is over and it’s time to play. Smile from your heart and say hello. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) You’re super frisky but love is going through a major transformation. Those who couldn’t keep up are being left in 2015 but those who can, will be by your side for a long time. In the meantime, keep focusing on your health and finish up all your chores before the weekend. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Home and family might be causing bumps in your everyday routine but it’s definitely your time for love. There’s more waiting behind a special hello and you won’t have to chase or bend to turn a spark into an adventure. Watch for accidents while driving. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) With a little creative intuition you can be making money from home but the moon has you wanting to get out and play. It’s the season for fun and socializing and although you’re super busy, get out and say hello. Family offers a pleasant surprise. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Luck and expansion continues to bless your journey. The bigger your goal, the more chance it has to succeed. Money is a fight but a quick smile and well-timed apology saves the day. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’re loving on all cylinders and new challenges look more like fun bumps than painful obstacles. So what’s holding you back from the dreams you know you deserve? A secret reveals itself publicly. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Love is looking directly at you so shake off the stress from 2015 and say hello. There’s still drama coming at you from behind the scenes but it’s about to end and then you’ll have an opportunity to rebound brilliantly in 2016. Rewards arrive at their own pace so it’s up to you to accept them when they do. Not when you think you’re ready.
