BEST-WEST REALTY LTD.

The light guiding party-goers home The season of festive merriment is upon us and that means a very full calendar: parties, dinners, dances. With all the food and drink that accompanies these events, a designated driver is a social butterfly’s best friend. Imagine waking up safe and sound the morning after a party, knowing that your car is right outside, delivered safely by a team of friendly volunteers. No epic journey’s to retrieve your car the morning after; the only quest that awaits you is for the ultimate hangover cure in the form of a delicious breakfast sandwich. That’s the beauty of Operation Red Nose. While you are getting a safe ride home, you are also supporting a worthy cause. Katie Klassen, Sport Participation coordinator for PacificSport, has been the organizer of Operation Red Nose for seven years. She explains that the service is by donation and “all donations in Kamloops helps support our amateur athletes by providing them travel grants, use of specialty equipment, free sport education workshops. To date PacificSport has handed out over $277,000 in travel grants since 1997”. With each passing year, Operation Red Nose is becoming an increasingly popular choice. According to Katie, Operation Red Nose provide 1265 safe rides home in 2014, and 1139 rides in 2013. Every year the service becomes more popular and they anticipate to provide over 1300 rides this year. Katie welcomes as many volunteers as possible, “We are always looking to have more teams on the road to be able to provide more rides. It is a challenge to find volunteers for our busy weekends and of course New Years Eve. On our busy nights we have around 21 teams which is about 70

volunteers”. If you call for a ride, you can be assured that you will get a ride home but the number of volunteers does define wait times for those wanting to use the service. Volunteering for this organization is a great way to give back to the community at Christmas time. Supporting this cause helps ensure safety on the roads and creates opportunities for local athletes. Katie says that there are volunteers who come back each year, “It becomes a social event for most volunteers and they love seeing each other each winter and enjoy meeting new people. There are lots of volunteers who come in teams of three to volunteer together and Rotary groups and businesses put in multiple teams”. Looking for something different to do on December weekends, or thinking of a creative way to spend New Year’s Eve? Driving for Operation Red Nose can be fun and interesting way to spend an evening with friends. You wouldn’t go hungry either; volunteers will enjoy offerings from Domino’s Pizza, Cooper’s Foods, Save on Foods, McDonald’s and Costco. Katie encourages groups and individuals to go to the RCMP detachment on Battle Street to complete the volunteer application form, which includes a criminal record check and a driving abstract. Once the check is complete, Katie will contact eligible volunteers regarding availability. The volunteer application form is also available online at www.operationrednose.com or by emailing kamloops@operationrednose.com. Dates of operation are December 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 26 and 31 between the hours of 9:00 pm and 3:00 am. Call 250-372-5110 if you need a ride home. Alicia Ashcroft, freelance

25,000 Syrian Refugees are coming to Canada by March 2016 and 2,500 to 3,000 of them will be arriving in BC. Forty per cent of the new arrivals will be children under 18 and will require settlement and community integration support as they adjust to their new life in Canada. United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo is launching an urgent community fundraising appeal to help these children and families settle in our region. Money raised through United for Refugees will support Refugees and Friends Together (RAFT) in the safe arrival of families and 12 months of support including housing, food, emotional support, community inclusion and connections such as healthcare and employment services. It will also support Kamloops Immigrant Services (KIS) which will be offering wrap-around services to the families such as crisis and trauma counseling, language training and social opportunities. For many refugees, escaping the harsh realities of their country is just the first step in a long journey. Once they arrive in Canada, their new life will be overwhelming. To address these challenges, United Way will be supporting RAFT and KIS as well as other local nonprofits who will provide related supports and services for refugees. United Way will be matching donations to United for Refugees up to $10,000. Donations are now being accepted online at unitedwaytnc.ca/refugees.

Huge gains in HIV testing as Interior Health marks World AIDS Day Interior Health’s work to expand access to HIV testing and treatment in the region has led to significant increases in screening for the disease, a critical step in controlling and eventually ending the AIDS epidemic. Since 2013, HIV testing in the region has increased by 50 per cent with HIV testing rates now exceeding 3,500 tests per 100,000 people. The results come as Interior Health marks World AIDS Day on December 1 and the one-year anniversary of the My Health is Sexy campaign, which aims to promote HIV testing and reduce stigma. “I am very proud of the work we have done to increase the number of people getting tested for HIV in our region. Improved access to testing has played an important

role in this increase but so have other factors such as increasing awareness of the advances in treatment and reducing the stigma that has long been associated with HIV,” said Maja Karlsson, STOP HIV Program implementation leader. “We have worked hard to spread the message that everyone should be tested and that living a long healthy life with HIV is the new reality for those who are diagnosed early.” Interior Health has launched several initiatives under the provincial Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention of HIV/ AIDS (STOP HIV/AIDS) program. These initiatives include: A Health Outreach Nurse team that provides HIV testing, care, treatment, and education throughout the region.

A specialized integrated medical team of physicians and nurse practitioners with advanced HIV training to provide clinical expertise to the STOP HIV program and direct care to patients living with HIV across the region. Six clinical HIV teams across the region who focus on services and supports to meet local needs. The “My Health Is Sexy” campaign, is aimed at promoting HIV testing and to reduce stigma. Routine HIV testing in hospitals - offer patients an HIV test when blood work is ordered. Interior Health and its community partners also hold approximately 90 HIV testing and awareness events a year. Events will be held in several communities across the region to mark World AIDs Day.

Give the gift of sport this holiday Over 30 percent of Canadian youth under the age of 18 cannot afford to play organized sport. With the help of Canadians across the country, KidSport’s annual campaign, running until January 8, 2016, aims to get more kids off the sidelines, into the game and experience the gift of sport. There is new demand each year, however and KidSport can make a bigger impact with your help by donating to the Give the Gift of Sport campaign. Locally here in Kamloops KidSport have helped over 200 kids, beating last year’s numbers of 187 kids helped. Contributions can be made at KidSport.ca/GiftofSport, where personal, corporate or tribute donations can be directed to any of KidSport’s 178 community chapters.

Up your online shopping savvy The Monday after American Thanksgiving—November 30 this year—has become well known as Cyber Monday and consumers are increasingly trading over-indulging at the dinner table for splurging on online shopping bargains. For many, this online shopping spree signals the start of the Christmas shopping season as well as a great way to avoid the chaos at the mall by going digital in pursuit of the perfect holiday gift. But, with the ever-present threat of online fraud, is trading the crowds for online shopping just trading one headache for another. Global payments solution provider ACI reports one in every 86 “card not present” transactions is now an attempted fraud. BUSINESS PROFILE

Dec 2

You want it, you got it There’s something about the Pogue Mahone Irish Alehouse that makes you want to settle in for the evening. Warm and inviting, the pub is currently being decorated for the Christmas season, which adds a fun festive touch. If you’ve come looking for the traditional Irish pub fare, look no further, but if you want to tantalize the palate with a gastro-pub flair, they’ve got that too. Either way, the food is guaranteed to be fresh and homemade. Speaking with Joe Dobson and Mia Sheldon will literally make your stomach growl with hunger. The entire management team’s passion for food, drink and customer service is simply exhilarating. To them as well as fellow team members Tami-Lynn Fripp and Fallesha Harmon, it is deeply important that when you come to their establishment you will have a memorable dining experience. Special events aplenty, Tuesdays are Jam Nights, Thursday is Music Bingo and Friday nights are Karaoke. Most Saturday nights feature a DJ or live band. There are food specials every night (hello Tuesday $2 Taco Night!) Wednesdays are always popular, with twenty-five different flavours of wings available, how could they not be? Mia’s recommendation? Chili lime!

Local musicians release music for the syrian refugee crisis Local singer songwriters Deandra Dey and Timothy Brookbanks are engaging the Kamloops community with their most recent musical release. Aside from the appeal that this is a locally produced track, the musicians are donating all of the funds from the track to their fundraiser “Song for Syrians”. “As things have gotten progressively worse in the middle east, we wanted to contribute to the cause but we were not sure how,” says Timothy. “With the release of our new song, we realized it would be a great opportunity to bring the two things together.” The pair have a fundraising goal of $1500 before December 25. Blindfold surprise

an imposter

During lunch at work, I ate three plates of beans (which I know I shouldn’t). When I got home, my husband seemed excited to see me and exclaimed delightedly, “Darling I have a surprise for dinner tonight!” He then blindfolded me and led me to my chair at the dinner table. I took a seat and just as he was about to remove my blindfold, the telephone rang. He made me promise not to touch the blindfold until he returned and went to answer the call. The beans I had consumed were still affecting me and the pressure was becoming unbearable, so while my husband was out of the room I seized the opportunity, shifted my weight to one leg and let one go. It was not only loud, but it smelled like a fertilizer truck running over a skunk in front of a garbage dump! I took my napkin from my lap and fanned the air around me vigorously. Then,

shifting to the other leg, I ripped off three more. The stink was worse than cooked cabbage. Keeping my ears carefully tuned to the conversation in the other room, I went on releasing atomic bombs like this for another few minutes. The pleasure was indescribable! Eventually the telephone farewells signalled the end of my freedom, so I quickly fanned the air a few more times with my napkin, placed it on my lap and folded my hands back on it feeling very relieved and pleased with myself. My face must have been the picture of innocence when my husband returned, apologizing for taking so long. He asked me if I had peaked through the blindfold and I assured him I had not. At this point, he removed the blindfold and twelve dinner guests seated around the table, with their hands to their noses, chorused, “Happy Birthday!”

Thoughtful anniversary gift Bill’s second anniversary was coming up and if there was one thing that got his wife Suzy upset, it was not getting a thoughtful gift on a special occasion. Bill quizzed all his friends, co-workers, clients and anyone he happened to bump into, as to what would be a good anniversary present. He finally settled on a huge bouquet of flowers. Not willing to trust himself to pick out the right flowers, Bill called up a local flower shop with strict instructions

My husband was once employed in the printing division of a large manufacturing firm. One morning, word came from the top that some visiting VIPs would be touring the plant in just a few minutes. All production was immediately shut down as employees scrambled to quickly tidy up the work place. When the appointed lookout yelled, “Here they come!” fifty fingers that were poised over fifty machine start-up buttons pressed down in unison and blew every fuse in the building.

But, since the actual road closure is not apparent until you go around a bend, a lot of drivers go just to see if the road is really closed. After they see that the road really is closed, they start making their way back. Their embarrassment is made worse by another sign right behind the ROAD CLOSED sign, but facing them on their return. The new sign reads: TOLD YOU SO!

Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It hasn’t been entirely roses as the year unfolded its drama, but was it really so bad that you had to pack away your smile? As our most optimistic and jovial sign, your spark leads the way through our darkest days. When the mood gets heavy tell a joke and watch as glowing eyes light the room. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Life continues to throw unexpected curves but friends are more than willing to lend a helping hand. If love is slow then spend a couple of extra hours at the office finishing up old projects and pushing ahead with the new. The extra effort is noticed as an office romance heats up the holidays. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Just as work begins to slow down your social schedule heats up. Expect the phone to ring with offers to get out for new and exciting activities. Recent lessons lead the way to new faces but love has slipped away in your quest to reinvent yourself. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) This is the last week to reap the rewards for a team project. Push the “go” button and get it done. Effort will remain but love and attraction will move on. An exotic new face says hello. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Your push to get everyone going is beginning to bump those closest to you again. Your mind is currently expanding with new possibilities but use caution before forcing foreign ideas on everyone. Love remains strong but watch your temper. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21)
It’s still busy! As much as you’d like to slow down and enjoy the day, it’s all errands and money you receive through legal channels. It might be starting to feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel but keep putting your pieces together. Love returns in a week and they’ll be looking for you. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) It’s still time to play so get out and smile big. There’s a new love waiting and they are definitely not your usual type but the energies are indicating that this person has what it takes to last. If you’re looking long term in love then now’s the time to say hello. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22)
Watch your health. A nagging pain could turn out to be more. Love has you grounding your life and preparing a foundation for your future. Reach out today and love will return the favour. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Rally the troops and join in the fun! It’s a week of making money then spending it on the home. As the days begin to tire the holiday spirit fills you with a fresh spark for fun. Expect a surprise decision in legal matters. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) This week is all about the things that make you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to take on the world. Take inventory of your personal possessions and clear out the old. Your new journey has already begun and it’s now time to catch up to your dreams. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Put yourself first and wrap up loose ends. Projects, dreams, goals and people all have a time and place along your journey. The remainder of the year finds you evaluating recent triumphs. Look inward as feelings hidden in your past lead to future rewards. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 Nov. 22)good Someone has a crush on you It’s- always news! but they’re too shy to say hello. Your mission is to find out who it is and disarm their#1 fears withVictoria your warm heartKamloops and big smile.
