Where does the time go? The older you get, it seems the more often you use that phrase, but really, where does the time go? It wasn’t that long ago that we flipped our calendar over from 1999 to 2000. We had fears that Y2K would destroy the world as we know it, many people stocked up on water and supplies, hoarding cash just in case the bank machine really didn’t work. Then there was the Mayan prophecy that the world would end in December of 2012. There was no point in preparing anything for
this; you either needed to move to a cave in the vast north or throw a big party because we’d all be gone anyways! There seems to always be some sort of doom and gloom on our horizon but through it all we here in Kamloops keep trudging. Our days, weeks, months and years are filled to the brim with good deeds, loving gestures and giving of ourselves. 2014 was no exception. Being involved with the Echo has great benefits. You get a firsthand look at all the new, interesting and maybe

Wonderful people and places – continued from page 1 Tranquille Sanitarium tunnels. The list, which could go on and on, really does never end. We have so many wonderful people, places and businesses here, that there is always some good happening. In terms of other memorable moments of here on the North Shore, our calendar in 2014 was jam-packed with some other great yearly adventures. Jack and Jodi participated in the NSBIA’s Golf Tournament, we all just attended a rousing game of music bingo at Pogue Mahone’s, Carrie caught a metal concert or two, wing night at the Dirty Jersey was enjoyed, bowling balls were thrown, shopping was done, slot machines were played and much, much more. A highlight for my daughter was the opening of the new Soccer Quest Indoor facility where she has been playing Tuesday nights. As a family we always enjoy heading over to Gardengate to see their Pumpkins of Light and trips to get some awesome fresh and organic veggies and plants, this year their summer salsa competition was top-notch with so many great teams competing as well we always enjoy heading to McDonald Park to take in some great local music during Music in the Park. There is a reason half the population of Kamloops lives here on the North Shore. It has a ton to offer. From open houses at Gardengate and the Big Little Science Centre to amazing outdoors just waiting to be explored, the North Shore has it all. Tanya Orozco, freelance
2014 has been quite a year both personally and professionally. It started out with a nice, much enjoyed, vacation to Mexico at the end of January. We managed to escape during the cold snap and while I thought about everyone at home in the -20 degree weather I couldn’t help but think about the nearly 50-degree difference as I enjoyed 30 degree beach days. I had never ventured to Mexico before and I do have to say I enjoyed having plenty of personal shoppers. I had a guy for everything; a blanket guy, a hat guy, a bag guy, a fish on a stick guy - they really have thought of everything! This spring we also had the good fortune of being able to invite my mom to come and live with us. She made the big move from Sicamous and we have enjoyed being able to spend extra time together, gardening, canning and baking. I have had a little extra time to spend with her, as most of you may know I have passed on the publishing reins at the Echo and Edge Publishing to my friend Jack Bell. Edge Publishing has been a huge part of my life for the last 12 years and although I do miss it (a little) I am happy to be able to spend some much needed time with family and
pursue some of my other interests and hobbies that I’ve missed out on over the past decade. Although I am not currently there full time, I am not far away. I still have my desk and spot in our Echo office. How could I not? Visiting and being part of the Downtown Kamloops and North Shore business community was and still is the highlight of my day. They are such wonderful nieghbourhoods full of some of the most thoughtful, caring and hardworking individuals that I have ever met. I am always excited to run into old friends on the street, visit your businesses to do a little shopping and come together to work on our common goals. I wouldn’t be able to give that up ever. The most important thing to remember is that change is good. Over the 12 years that I have worked with Edge Publishing I have seen our neighbourhoods grow, I have seen businesses expand and flourish and I have seen you, my friends, take challenges head on, rise to any occasion and do things above and beyond what anyone could ever expect. I wish you all the merriest of holidays and lets do coffee in the New Year! Wenda Noonan

Feeling privileged to be your neighbour As we approach the end of another calendar year it gives one an opportunity to reflect on things. This year is no exception. 2014 has proven to be a very exciting one for me personally as I acquired Edge Publishing. Along with the great responsibility this carries, I also would like to recognize a couple of facets this brings. First, I would like to thank our wonderful clientele and supporters. It’s been great to reconnect with so many of you both on the North Shore and Downtown. I look forward to continuing our relationship. It truly is an honour to hear how much you enjoy reading and connecting with The Echo newspapers each and every week. Of course none of this would be
possible without such a dedicated talented staff. Day in day out, week in week out, they bring it to the office in order to provide our readers such a wonderful product. All of this, of course, would not be possible without the efforts of one Wenda Noonan the last 12 years. Wenda’s creativity and passion made Edge Publishing what it is today. It is my hope that I may continue Wenda’s vision. We truly are blessed to live in such a caring, giving community. You never have to look far to see neighbours going over and above to help make it so. We at The Echo are privileged to be included. I wish all of you the very best for 2015. Jack Bell

A great year on the North Shore It’s been another fun year for us at the North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) and we hope you reached your goals for 2014 as well. For our major events; we had one grow in its 2nd year (Overlanders Day) and brought back another for a successful return with some great partners (A&W Charity Golf Tournament in support of Interior Community Services’ Meals on Wheels program and North Shore beautification projects.) and the corner of Fortune and Leigh went from a bare dirt eyesore to a great looking green space! At Overlanders Day in August we had a fun filled day where it seemed to rain all around, except on us at beautiful McDonald Park! Our business and community expo was always busy, the kid’s zone was very well used, local restaurants filled our tummies with their fantastic food and our live stage showcased cultural groups then rocked the afternoon away! The highlight for me was being a ‘dunkee’ at People in Motion’s dunk tank fundraiser. They are a great organization that does such fine work. We’re going to be adding some more fun aspects to this year’s Overlanders Day so make sure you keep your calendars clear
for August 15, 2015! For our other big events this year we renewed a partnership with Interior Community Services and A&W Charities for a fun day of golf in the Kamloops summer sun! The highlight of the day was Reubin’s Diner’s Hole#7 food fantastic! On Arbour Day in May we partnered with the City of Kamloops, Communities in Bloom and other sponsors to green up the corner of Fortune and Leigh from eyesore to eye catcher! Our annual Hallowe’en Treat Street continued to grow and our Christmas Open House had its biggest audience yet! We had so much more going on with promoting our North Shore businesses, working with community groups, engaging stakeholders; but those events were the highlights for 2014. 2015 is going to start with a challenge for the North Shore community. When construction starts on the Overlanders Bridge, it’s going to impact traffic flows, commuter habits, and businesses. It’s a long
overdue major re-fit that will impact us daily. I hope you will take this as an opportunity to re-discover many of our North Shore businesses. This area of town is generational. Our parents grew up and shopped here, we are shopping here, and the next generation is growing up with the same pride. We are the North Shore! This holiday season, we invite everyone to shop the North Shore. You can find what you need for every family member! There is a sense of pride and comfort when you shop in your own neighbourhood. Support your local businesses this holiday season. We challenge you to buy close to home and rediscover your North Shore businesses. You can stay up to date on North Shore events and what we have coming up in 2015 through our website www.nsbia.com, our Facebook page and regular e-newsletter. On behalf of everyone at the NSBIA: Merry Christmas and all the best in 2015! Steven Puhallo, executive director, North Shore Business Improvement Association

It’s the little things in life Sigh, it’s that time of year again… the year in review! My year hasn’t been a very exciting one, just your regular, run of the mill year, but that isn’t a bad thing at all! There are many consistent things that happen throughout the year that are most enjoyable. One being Kamloops Burlesque Monthly Showcase, which is my favourite monthly outing! There were many miscellaneous activities such as a long summer weekend with my sister at our uncle’s cabin at Deka Lake, getting a couple new tattoos, taking in local entertainment at The Blue Grotto, Music in the Park of course, a metal show at The Dirty Jersey and my annual ugly Christmas sweater party to name a few in no particular order. I even started a Pagan coffee meet up group that meets once a month at The Art We Are. Although I didn’t make it to Vegas for my 40th, I had the best time ever at Sun Peaks with most of my favourite people! I suppose unless we do something grand, we don’t consider the little things to be much, until you put them all together. Even though I didn’t have any elaborate plans or go on holidays anywhere, I make sure to

make the most out of life by spending it with my family and friends, which is what it’s all about. I am so happy to have such great friends and wonderful kids, I couldn’t ask for more! I also am lucky to see so many friendly faces that come into our office on a regular basis. One thing I really enjoy about working downtown is the sense of community you don’t find in other areas of
town. I look forward to seeing all our neighbours in the New Year. Although there have been many changes to the Echo staff over the last year, with people coming and going, it’s always been a great group of people to work with and for that I am grateful. 2014 has been a pretty good year and I think 2015 will be even better, hopefully starting with a nice surprise! Adventures in parenting 2014 was an adventurous year for my family. For the first half of the year I was on maternity leave. Spending so much time with Aurora was amazing. It was a year of firsts for Aurora: first step, first birthday, first sentence, and a growing vocabulary. She still has trouble with “L” and calls a few things by her made-up names, but she knows over 20 words now. She uses Mama and Dada a lot as well as Joe (our dog). She makes animal noises instead of the animal name. And her favourite words are “up”, “cheese”, “gohne” (instead of phone), “da” (short for dance), and “blebbleh” (roughly translates to “read me this book please”). 2014 has been hard on Joe. He had more teeth removed, poor little dog, there is so little we can do to help. He had his 7th birthday this year and has quite the little white beard coming in. Over the year his jealousy over Aurora has calmed down, but he still needs to be picked up after we give her a lot of attention.
I’m very proud of my husband Derek. In addition to running a successful business he competed in several Magic tournaments as a professional player. He and two friends placed 14 out of 200 teams in Barcelona, Spain. It was their first pro event so it was a big deal! Aurora and I tagged along on that once-in-a-lifetime trip. We sampled tapas and paella, walked La Rambla and took in all the Gaudi architecture we could find! (See Erin’s family photo on page 4). Near the end of my maternity leave I was worried and stressed about returning to work. For two reasons: It was time to leave Aurora in the care of someone else and I might have forgotten how to do my job! Derek was very supportive and my worries disappeared as soon as I sat at my desk and my fingers started typing away, like I hadn’t missed a day of work! It’s been great to get back to work and join the adult world again! Erin Johnson

Jemima was taking an afternoon nap on New Year’s Eve before the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband, ‘I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year’s present. What do you think it all means?’ ‘Aha, you’ll know tonight,’ answered Max smiling broadly. At midnight, as the New Year was chiming, Max approached Jemima and handed her small package. Delighted and excited she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: ‘The Meaning of Dreams’.

Trevor’s New Year’s Eve party was an annual occurrence with numerous guests arriving. During the evening, a man knocked on the door, was greeted heartily although no one knew who he was and was led to where the drinks were in the kitchen. He sat there happily, chatting away, for a couple of hours before a strange light dawned on his face. ‘You know,’ he confided to Trevor, ‘I wasn’t even invited to this party. I just came over to tell you that some of your guests’ cars are blocking my drive.’ He continued, ‘My wife’s been sitting out in the car waiting for me to get them moved, so that we can go out.’

Well it has been brought to my attention that at The Echo we have to contribute editorially with a bit about the year that was. It really has been a roller coaster ride both in my work life and my personal life. I had found myself without a job last January as the company I was employed by closed its doors for good. It was like a death in the family. I have never been without a job and certainly not under those circumstances. So the hunt began with resume updating, career counseling, and many chocolate covered Jube Jubes (I am a bit of a stress eater). I was going into week three of unemployment and I got a text from a friend saying that The Echo was looking for an advertising sales person. I really did not know much about the publication but I called and I met with Wenda the next day over coffee at Caffe Motivo. I was her last interview before a trip to Mexico. At The Echo it is really all about compatibility and I was offered the job later that day and have not looked back since. It is one of most pleasant places I have ever worked. It is tight knit group that likes to have fun, but we also get the job done. I have two children one that started Grade 8 this year and one in Grade 3. The transition to high school has been just as hard on me as my daughter. It will get better I’m told. My son is a handful but cute as a button. He has had many appearances in The Echo as we try to be out in the community as much as we can. His latest was being an Echo Elf during the Lights in the Night. I have had the pleasure of getting to know so many great people in our community both downtown and on the North Shore. I look forward to working with you all in 2015. Happy New Year! Jodi Lawrence

echo stargazer Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) As the year begins decisions need to be finalized about where to best place your energies for your biggest success. This week it looks like money is going to get the nod. Follow your heart and your dreams will take care of themselves. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Problems at work clear up in time for a fresh New Year beginning. And just in time! As your love life finally gets the boost you’ve been waiting for. Be aggressive not pushy and you’ll win the heart you’ve been wanting. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) As the year begins focus on what’s good and what you can accomplish in 2015. Work is going to be a problem and the past is looking for a fight but love is very strong and people are here to help. This week look for a “friend” to change the stakes. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The New Year begins on a lucky note so buy a lottery ticket and say hello to admiring glances. Work and time in the public spotlight fill the beginning of January. If things begin to unravel trust your natural leadership skills to help everyone through. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’re looking for love, money and security but you don’t want to be tied down. You’ve been through enough and you look great. Walk away moments will be replaced with walk toward moments. Love is waiting in foreign eyes. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Karma catches up as you enter a tough patch with your closest relationships. It’s a time you can really get ahead financially if only you could pull the team together. Look to the future for success. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You begin the year attracting love and luck in your astro-sector of relationships. If single and someone winks go for it. If partnered up then grab your love and do something special like begin the year in each other’s arms. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Although the general energy of love has changed and changed again, you’re still astro-lucky! A lottery ticket to begin the year might be just what you need to jumpstart 2015. Love, luck and fun are your main themes for 2015. And watch the sweets. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Your New Year kicks off with a creative blast that borders on the frisky! If there’s a new love in your life then you’ll want to plan some fun and frolic. You’re a little aggressive with the chores and family is going to be a concern this astro-cycle. But this week love shines. Enjoy the new beginning. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Fate surprises once again but this time you’re ready. Say yes and invite them home. You’ve been working hard and there’s a lot for you to give but you have to know if the feelings are real before you take that chance. Your 2015 theme is sharing. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Keep pushing on that new business idea. Things may have been delayed and the usual monsters may have tried to get into the way but the new you is ready for a bigger slice of life. You’ve finally left the past behind and you’re ready for a fresh adventure. Go get ‘em! Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Money arrives to begin the year and this sets you off on a bit of a spending spree. Careful planning ensures that your cents don’t disappear as quickly as they arrived. The pace picks up but you’ll be ready. Love is waiting somewhere sensual and luxurious.
