Bigger, better home for North Shore YMCA/YWCA The Kamloops YMCA/YWCA’s have been a staple in most people’s lives. We have swam in their pool, participated in fitness classes, sent our kids to camp, sent our kids to playcare while we worked out. We have relied on them to watch and enrich the most precious members of our family while we are at work. They are there to help us throughout the various stages of life with exercise, fitness, care and more. These are just some of the reasons that there is excitement in the air over by the John Tod Centre here on the North Shore. The old elementary school, which sits at 150 Wood Street, was a sad loss to the community but like the old saying goes; when one door closes, another opens and with that came the rebirth of the school a whole new vision for the neighbourhood. That new vision is a joint venture between the City of Kamloops, the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA/YWCA. The result speaks for itself. As of this week, the location houses not only the Boys and Girls Club but the whole North Shore YMCA/ YWCA and their Childcare Resource and Referral section as well. “We are super excited about our joint venture between the City of Kamloops, Boys and Girls Club and the John Tod Centre Task Force,” explains Meghan Drew, general manager of Health, Fitness and Aquatics at the Y. “The bigger space and facility has allowed us to enrich our health and wellness areas as well as centralize our childcare resource and referral centre.” Boys and Girls Club executive director Traci Anderson and As of today the brand new health and YMCA executive director Colin Reid can’t wait for you to fitness spaces at the John Tod Centre Y come and see the new space! is open! and can’t wait for you to come and see the new space. “We are expecting to welcome lots of excited and curious Y members and customers through our doors.” continues Meghan. “And we will be ready! The John Tod Centre Y will offer completely renovated fitness spaces and change rooms, 19 new pieces of cardio equipment, new weight training machines and outdoor fitness areas.” Although the doors of the North Shore Y facility at Northills Centre are now closed, this new, bigger facility will more than make up for that loss. They are excited about their new facilities that they have never had an opportunity to work with before including outdoor fields and play space as well as a full size gymnasium. “The centre of community being created at John Tod,” explains Colin Reid, CEO of the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA. “It will be a safe and welcoming place where people can connect with each other and participate in diverse activities for all ages that improve lives. The Y, in partnership with the City of Kamloops and the Boys and Girls Club, and the many businesses and organizations who have donated to this project, is laying the foundation to build a healthier community in Kamloops’ North Shore neighbourhoods.” What wonderful momentum for a great neighbourhood. Make sure to stop by and see what your new neighbourhood Y can do for you and your family. It can be guaranteed that once you make the Y your new go-to place, it will feel like home! Overlanders Bridge rehabilitation open house The City of Kamloops is holding a public open house for the Overlanders Bridge Rehabilitation Project on December 4 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Kamloops Alliance Church, 233 Fortune Drive. The Overlanders Bridge is slated for resurfacing in
the spring and summer of 2015. In addition to the bridge deck resurfacing, the project will also include reconstruction of the west side pedestrian sidewalk and repaving of the roadway approaches. City staff will be available to answer any questions.
Mental health care response improves through continued partnership Interior Health and the Kamloops RCMP have renewed their commitment to the Car 40 program through to April 2018. The Car 40 team consists of a dedicated psychiatric nurse who patrols the streets and responds to calls alongside an RCMP officer. In the last year, this team responded to more than 600 calls for service, and only six per cent required referral to hospital. The Car 40 partnership has helped to reduce repeat visits to
the local emergency department, as well as repeat calls for police service by individuals living with mental illness and or substance use disorders. Crisis response is not the only task of the Car 40 team. The nurse and constable also provide proactive support by following up with clients, helping administer medications, and assisting with discharge planning for those individuals who have required hospitalization.
Executive Flight Centre expands
Executive Flight Centre celebrated the grand opening of their new Fixed Base Operation (FBO), Industrial Charter Terminal at the Kamloops Airport on November 24. The 3,200 sq. ft. terminal is tailored to private and corporate aircraft owners, connecting them to work, home, and recreation while also supporting travel and tourism in this region. This facility supports existing travel and tourism and is equipped to handle the increased workforce volume from the growing northern hydro, mining, and oil and gas projects. The new FBO will entice companies looking to provide employment to residents of the Kamloops area, connecting them to new opportunities. For more information, visit efcaviation.ca.
The partnership will continue to evolve in an effort to support mental health and substance use disorder clients in the Kamloops community. Recently, a second dedicated RCMP officer was added to expand the hours of the program and Interior Health provides support through the existing after-hours emergency response for people in crisis.

Let’s help out a friend The Highland Dance Family is putting on a fundraiser to help out a good family. Peter Mutrie’s son, Evan, is in the fight of his life against a viral sickness that has left him paralyzed. For those of you that don’t know, Peter was the general manager of the North Shore Business Improvement Association for many years and his commitment to the North Shore is still felt across the community. Even though we live in Canada, costs are still incurred by families when one of them is fighting for their life. Let’s get out and support this fundraiser for the Mutrie Family.
The Pasta and Plaid Fundraiser will be held on Sunday, December 14 at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Doors open at 5:30pm, dinner at 6:00pm with entertainment to follow. Enjoy a great spaghetti dinner with salads, buns, and dessert! Great entertainment to follow with pipers and drummers from the Kamloops Pipe Band Society and dancers from the Shalni Prowse School of Highland Dance! Tickets are available at: Shalni Prowse Highland Dance Studio, 166 Oriole Road or call 250-573-2544. All proceeds to the Mutrie Family.

Canadian Dogs Annual, Canada’s largest and bestknown dog magazine, announced the “Top Ten PetFriendliest Cities” in the country. Kamloops ranks number eight on the list, edging out dozens of other urban centres in Canada. “We looked at a wide range of issues that affect our companion animals’ lives,” says Dana Cox, editor-in-chief. “Criteria included access to veterinary care, training, pet sitters, and quality pet products, as well as the number of pet-friendly restaurants and accommodations. We even took into consideration air quality and the number of off leash parks and beaches.”
Handbook available for mental health in the workplace Editor: We have all read about the increase of mental health issues in the workplace, with reports of nearly a quarter of the country’s working population currently affected by mental health problems or illnesses leading to absenteeism and turnovers. In fact, according to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, workplace mental health has a $51 billion economic impact on businesses across Canada, and in the next 30 years it is estimated to
reach $198 billion in current dollars. At the beginning of 2014, the Minister of Labour, asked me to investigate this critical issue and conduct consultations across Canada, meeting with academics, employers, employee groups, mental health agencies and most importantly to analyze the federal government funded implementation of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s ‘Mental Health in the Workplace Standard’. As I conducted these
consultations it became very apparent that businesses and groups across Canada are increasingly more invested in the mental well-being of their employees, however many are having challenges with implementing ‘the Standard’. Many stakeholders suggested a ‘how-to guide’ would be most welcome. Just this week, the Mental Health Commission acted on this key recommendation by launching a hands-on, easy to use handbook entitled Assembling the Pieces: An
Implementation Guide to the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. I would encourage all employers to review this voluntary set of guidelines, tools and resources to better help the psychological health and economic wellbeing of their workplaces. Upon the completion of my report and recommendations to the Minister, I am confident that our Government will continue to focus on this critical issue for Canadians. MP Cathy McLeod

School District 73 and Thompson Rivers University (TRU) are collaborating to deliver a unique education opportunity for students in the region to “sample university” while they are still attending high school. The agreement between the two institutions, which will allow TRU to offer dual credits in construction and mechanical trade courses at the new NorKam Trades and Technology School, was solidified November 28. Similar to the ACE-IT and TRU Start programs already available in the district, the new Construction and Mechanical Trades “sampler” courses will be administered and taught through TRU faculty to eligible students in grades 10 through 12. However, rather than students attending school at the TRU campus, they will be taught at the NorKam Trades and Technology school, where a new wing with classroom and shop facilities has been recently constructed to accommodate in-
creased trades and technology training. The forecasted need for skilled trades workers in BC in the coming decade is enormous with an estimated one million individuals needed to fill positions that will be largely vacated by retiring workers over the next eight to ten years. Students who successfully complete the sampler courses over one semester earn 16 credits toward their high school diploma and 12 credits from TRU, which may be applied to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of General Studies degree. The training can accommodate up to 36 students in each semester and applications for the September 2015 intake will be available in the new year with a deadline set for mid February. The first cohort of students accepted to the program begins studies at NorKam in February of 2015. More information on the programs can be found at www.tnt. sd73.bc.ca.

45-pound barbells from the YMCA. The men were struggling to keep the barbells in a small cart that kept tipping over because they were not strong enough to steer it.
Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other and finally they got married and had a little sweet potato, which they called ‘Yam.’ Of course, they wanted the best for Yam. When it was time, they told her about the facts of life. They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she wouldn’t get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like ‘Hot Potato,’ and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots. Yam said not to worry; no Spud would get her into the sack and make a rotten potato out of her! But on the other hand she wouldn’t stay home and become a Couch Potato either. She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring cousins. When she went off to Europe, Mr. and Mrs. Potato told Yam to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland, and the greasy guys from France called the French Fries. Yam said she would stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn’t associate with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all the trucks that say, ‘Frito Lay.’ Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that’s Potato University) so that when she graduated she’d really be in the Chips. Yet, in spite of all they did for her, one-day Yam came home and announced she was going to marry Tom Brokaw. Tom Brokaw! Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset. They told Yam she couldn’t possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he’s just a commentator.

The blind date “Hi Sarah, listen I only have a minute. I’m about to get picked up for a blind date, can you call me in a half hour just in case it’s going bad? Yes? Ok great! We’ll speak.” Raquel gave herself a quick spray of perfume, checked herself out one more time in the mirror, and headed outside to wait for the guy. Sure enough after twenty minutes Raquel was discreetly checking
her watch. After ten more long minutes her phone finally buzzed. Raquel listened for a few seconds, grimly pursed her lips, and turned to her date, “I feel terrible, but my Grandmother is terribly sick and I must go home now.” “No problem!” Said her date with a big grin, “in a few more minutes my dog was going to get run over!”

A day at the race track One day George was betting on the ponies, nearly losing his shirt, when he noticed a priest who had stepped out onto the track and blessed the forehead of one of the horses lining up for the fourth race. Lo and behold, this horse (a very long shot) won the race. George was most interested to see what the priest did in the next race. Sure enough, he watched the priest step out onto the track as the horses for the fifth race lined up and placed his blessing on the forehead of one of the horses. George made a beeline for the window and placed a small bet on the horse. Again, though another long shot, the horse won. George collected his winnings
Amish Road sign - Because horses know how to read
and anxiously waited to see which horse the priest bestowed his blessing on for the sixth race. The priest showed, blessed a horse. George bet on it and won! George was elated. As the day went on, the priest continued blessing one of the horses and it always came in first. George began to pull in some serious money and by the last race, he knew his wildest dreams were going to come true. He made a quick stop at the bank and withdrew every penny he owned, and awaited the priest’s blessing that would tell him which horse to place the bet on. True to his pattern, the priest stepped out onto the track before the last race and blessed the forehead, eyes, ears and hooves of one of the horses. George placed his bet - every cent he owned and watched the horse come in last. George was dumbfounded! He made his way to the track and when he found the priest, he demanded, “What happened, Father? All day you blessed horses and they won. The last race, you bless a horse and he loses. Now I’ve lost my life savings thanks to you!” The priest nodded wisely and said, “That’s the problem with you Protestants.” “You can’t tell the difference between a simple blessing and the Last Rites.”

Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Stop worrying about the cost and have some fun. The world is opening up for you but you’re going to have to make your move. Go after what’s in your heart and don’t be shy.
CHRISTMAS CASH?
Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Personal reflection and past lovers fill a busy week. As much as you’d like to stay home and unwind, friends call with a celebration. Enjoy the distraction. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re feeling social and you’d like to play but personal energy is low. Rest up but keep your eyes and options open. Love is waiting in your social network. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Keep pressing the buttons at work. Your message is getting through and it’s better for everyone. Allow the security in both love and money to be your stepping-stone. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’re on fire as a workshop or class introduces you to someone new. A flirt could turn serious but you’re putting in extra hours at the office. Get your homework done early for more time to play! Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The past catches up and says hello. It’s just the boost you need to get out of this rut. A business decision is going to work out so keep going. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) You’re super hot right now and people are looking at you in a partnership kind of way. Don’t procrastinate! Shortly, Saturn is going to put a damper on Gemini love so make your move now. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Plans run smoothly and it feels great! Your heart is focused on your career and various resources that can help the team. Love is waiting at the gym. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Congrats Leo, your health is about to return and it’s bringing your lighthearted attitude with it. Shine and the world will play with you. Buy a lottery ticket.
