Still sweethearts after sixty years Don and Jonette Goddard are set to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in September and still clearly have a spark. Throughout the conversation, a winding recollection of 65 years of friendship, blossoming romance, marriage, children, grandchildren, retirement and everything in between, Don and Jonette correct each other’s stories and finish each other’s sentences. Flirtatious and argumentative, they gently bickered over what street their wedding was on and what year they went to Hawaii. Says Don, “Between the two of us, we have one good memory.” Sitting back in their easy chairs, they reminisce about their lives together. Growing up, they lived relatively close to one another, but they caught the same bus route and eventually began riding the bus together when Jonette was 19 and Don 18. They dated for five years and got married in Vancouver. Jonette marvels at the passing of time, “Has it been sixty years already?” They remark on the blessings in their marriage and the life they

have built together. They fondly recall raising their family and watching their children’s families grow. Don is an avid fisher and loves the variety of lakes in this region, and said that they often had camping holidays in the area when their boys were small. When retirement came calling, they knew that Kamloops was where they wanted to be.

doesn’t care for crowds and prefers his own bed, but he doesn’t want to hinder his wife’s happiness. They believe that their ability to go their separate ways is an essential component of a healthy marriage. “It’s important to consider each other in any decision making, but you don’t have to do everything together,” they agree. “Marriage is 60/40 per cent,” says Don. “60/40 per cent? How do you figure that?” Jonette teases. “You give 60 and take 40,” he informs her. “You have to give more than you take.” Another thing they don’t do is argue. “You don’t gain anything from fighting,” they say. They have “discussions” and feel they’ve always been able to cover over any rockiness with relative ease. “Sixty years and still good friends,” Don says, his eyes drifting over to his wife. The subject of technology comes up, Jonette has a new phone and is still learning how to use all the features and Don has a phone that he only takes while fishing—but one thing is certain, they’ll never be one of those couples focusing on their phones instead of each other. In fact, it’s a trend they find disturbing, seeing young couples out and about, forsaking an opportunity to connect with their partners in order to scroll mindlessly through their phones. After six decades of Valentine’s days, that is the wisdom of their long-time love. Consider each other, discuss not disagree, give each other space and pay close attention to each precious moment; as Don and Jonette admit, it all goes by too quickly. Alicia Ashcroft, freelance

Wigging out at the 2nd Annual Valentines Hair MassAcure By the time Paul Cuthbert donates his hair next, it will be his 19th contribution to Locks of Love, the charitable organization that makes wigs for children. The inspiration for what is now his life-long mission came from Paul’s youth. When he was in elementary school, he was partnered with a wheelchair bound boy who had lost his hair due to illness. Paul remembers the tattered and unsightly hairpiece the boy wore; and how self-conscious it made the boy feel. He had been waiting for a new wig to be made and often expressed excitement for that day to come. Sadly, he died before he could ever get his new wig. That loss and that boy’s wish that never came true deeply impacted a young Paul. Used to regularly timed barber-style buzz cuts, his parents were happy to skip the trips for this charitable cause. Now, Paul says, it goes well beyond this childhood memory, “It’s so much bigger than that now.”

Paul wants to draw attention to the cause, as it is a really great way to give of yourself. If you can’t spare the hair, you are welcome to spend an evening. Join Paul at the Pogue Mahone on Saturday, February 13 at 8:00 pm. Entertainment will be provided by award-winning performer Bonnie Kilroe, a fabulous female celebrity impersonator. Cher! Dolly! Barbara! She plays all the greats and her show promises to be a glamorous and campy good time. Tickets are $20.00 and are available at Kamloops Live! Box Office. Don’t wait until the last minute as ticket prices rise to $30.00 on the show day. Paul said last year’s show sold out and believes this year will not be different. Pogue Mahone Irish Alehouse is located at 843 Desmond Street. Contact www.kamloopslive.ca/ for ticket information. Alicia A s h c ro f t , freelance

Literacy programs for vulnerable families funded by new Women’s Leadership Council The recently formed Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) of United Way of the Thompson Nicola Cariboo, recently invested over $13,000 into two programs in Kamloops. WLC is providing 100 per cent of the funding required to run an Intergenerational Parent-Child Mother Goose Program(R), and 50 per cent of the funding for both the Baby’s Head Start and the Kamloops Street School Mother Goose program in 2016. As the weeks passed she started smiling and interacting with her baby more and more. When a mom feels that attachment she realizes that she gets to write her own parenting experience, even if attachment in her childhood was interrupted.” Baby’s Head Start and Street School Mother Goose started this January and the Intergenerational Mother Goose program will start in the early spring.

Phil, a smart and handsome young man, dressed in the latest fashion, walked into this local pub. He noticed a woman gazing at him without blinking her big eyes. Phil felt flattered so he walked up to the woman and said in his deepest voice, “I’ll do anything you wish, beautiful lady, for just $10 but on one condition.” The woman appeared to

be trapped in the moment and asked as if in a trance, “What’s your condition?” Phil answered, “Tell me your wish in just three words.” There was a long pause, the woman opened her purse, counted out the money and handed it to the man along with her address. She then looked deeply into his eyes and whispered, “Clean my house.”

Evolution of dating and age As a single, never-married woman in my 40s, friends, relatives and co-workers have questioned me endlessly about my status. Over the years I’ve noticed a subtle change in the nature of their inquiries. In my teens, friends would ask, “Who are you going out with this weekend?” In my 20s, relatives would say, “Who are you dating?” In my 30s, co-workers might inquire, “So, are you dating anyone?” Now people ask, “Where did you get that adorable purse?”

echo stargazer Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Joint finances hook up with a lesson from your past as you uncover something in the details that could bring you both piece of mind and financial stability. Most likely, an inheritance or money that you’ve been waiting on for some time finally comes through. Love is waiting with an old friend. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Reach for the stars in love. There’s a strong chance that your friends are going to introduce you to a real keeper. Smile big to impress but don’t overdo it. Let them get to know the real you. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) It’s a reclusive, recharge the emotional batteries kind of week. Your social network however undergoes a change as that new love interest introduces you their friends. Take the lead with a big smile and show the group what you can do. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’ve developed a taste for the exotic as far away lands expand your creative outlook and bring the impossible closer to reality. Imagination mixes with practical ingenuity to bring a romantic goal to life. Extra hours at the office will be required. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Another boring workweek would normally send signals of sleep and depression through your active mind. This week however you finally have the time to tackle projects that you’ve only been dreaming of. Put your heart into it. The work you create now has the potential to change everything. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) New beginnings in love have you thinking about the bigger picture. Travel casts an enticing spell but you’re not sure if you should take the bait. An inheritance arrives to take the heat off of joint finances. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) This week your daily routine get’s a boost from your astro-money sector. Keep your eyes open for surprise money-making opportunities that arrive in the fields of physical health, accounting or helping others in a physical way. Love is still waiting at the gym. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Although you’re trying and trying, you haven’t exactly crossed up through the glass ceiling to the next level. What made you successful at your current level is not going to be good enough at the next. If you really want your dreams then you’re going to have to evolve upwards instead of inwards. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) It’s Valentine’s week but you don’t have to spend all of your money to show that you care. For the right person, it’s the little things that count. Try and be there for your partner in ways only you can. This will diminish the financial stress and demonstrate that you understand who you are, what you have to offer and why you’re loved in the first place. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) This week there’s a real chance to meet someone new and exciting. Get out but don’t be too chatty and curb your natural over the top aggression. Your Scorpio stare is all you’ll need to get your message across. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) A stroke of luck at the office opens doors to a big financial reward. Keep your eyes open and be ready to act. The combination of self-discipline and a new way of thinking will help love guide you at an emotional crossroads. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Something at a distance has your attention and it’s inspiring you to change the way you look. Perhaps an outfit from across the seas, a big city haircut or even a new car could all be on the way. It’s time to look the part you’re stepping into.
