2015 Special Olympics BC Winter Games are here They’re back! The Special Olympics, specifically the 2015 Special Olympics BC Winter Games is making its way back to town February 19 to 21 complete with over 600 athletes and 200 volunteer coaches and mission staff from all over the province. Kamloops has a long history with the Special Olympics, as it was one of the first communities in BC to start offering Special Olympics programs in 1983. The 2015 Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Winter Games is a stepping stone in a long line of competitions, one which these athletes train and dedicate much of their free time too. Kamloops offers the opportunity for athletes to advance to national and then ultimately international levels of competition. Top performers will earn the right to go to the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and from there can compete for the chance to move on to the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. “Special Olympics really focuses on the athlete experience, and we are fortunate that some incredible local sponsors have stepped forward to help us provide an outstanding event for the athletes and their coaches who will compete here in Kamloops,” says Pat Davis, 2015 SOBC Winter Games chair. “We’re so grateful for their support, and welcome others to get involved to help make these Provincial Games a memorable and empowering experience for everyone involved.”

What are the Special Olympics some ask? The Special Olympics aims to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences. In 1980, Special Olympics BC started out with two weekends of games and about 500 participants. I’ve never done that before. I hope lots of people will come out to volunteer with the events and cheer us on!” The athletes have been training hard for their trip to Kamloops and are coming to compete with determination and pride in the seven different winter sports which include alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing and speed skating. New partnership to benefit less fortunate

Representatives from the following partner agencies: Valley First, A Division of First West Credit Union,
Elizabeth Fry Society, Interior Community Services, YM-YWCA, White Buffalo Aboriginal and Metis Health Society, Kamloops Immigrant Services, Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Centre and Boys , Girls Club and Family Tree. (L-R in front row first) Chelsea Koronko, Shelley Piva, Bev Forseth, June Weyers, Judy Adams, Marjorie Edgington, Lian Clark, Debbie Kadun, Liza Ferris-Ortiz, Val Janz, Donna Erickson, Christine Boose, Louise Richards, Bonnie Cleveland, Susan Wright, Nikki Peltier, Matthew Contu-Moya.

The Homelessness Action Plan (HAP) has announced a new partnership in our community to support those less fortunate Kamloops residents who live on the edge of poverty. This new project, which is being launched in partnership with Valley First, will connect people with banking services, providing guidance and support individuals and families as they strive toward their savings goals. Any successful community program is only as strong as its partners. That is why HAP is incredibly happy to have joined with Valley First to bring banking services and advice to those who need it most. Valley First has pledged its financial services along with funding to match participants savings 1:1 and bringing their financial goals within reach. Participants will be connected to the program through some of the following community partner agencies and others: Elizabeth Fry Society, Interior Community Services, YM-YWCA, White Buffalo Aboriginal and Metis Health Society, Kamloops Immigrant Services, Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Centre, The Boys and Girls Club and Family Tree.

RCMP Youth Academy receives generous donation The RCMP Youth Academy will have extra opportunities for youth this year thanks to a generous donation from KGHM Ajax. This is the fifth year the program has been delivered in Kamloops, which allows approximately 25 Grade 11 and 12 students to spend a week going through boot camp style training led by RCMP members. The training closely resembles the experience at the RCMP depot in Regina. “This is one of the many wonderful opportunities that School District No 73 has for students to test out future careers,” says Sheryl Lindquist, district principal, Secondary Transitions. The $5,000 donation will allow the School District to offer scholarships to the top cadets, offset costs from 2015 and expand the program in 2016. “The program provides information for young people to make decisions about their career path after they graduate,” says RCMP Constable Ru-

pert Meinke, who has been involved in leading the program for the past five years. While the training is aimed at students interested in a law enforcement career, all students benefit from the program whether they go on to work in law enforcement or not. The experience is unlike anything students have ever done and builds friendships among troop members as they have fun and learn new things.

“It’s common for parents to comment on the discipline their child has developed after going through this program,” Meinke says. The 2015 RCMP Youth Academy is now full, but the School District encourages students and parents to visit their website if they are interested in learning more for the 2016 program: http://tnt2.sd73.bc.ca/wordpress/rcmp-youth-academy/.

Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer gets sponsor Raymond James Canada and Prostate Cancer Foundation BC have announced that Raymond James will be the new presenting sponsor of The Father’s Day Walk/Run taking place on Sunday, June 21 in Kamloops. Giving back into the communities where they live and work is a key value for the people of Raymond James. Being part of a collective effort to try to spread awareness

and educate men about proper prevention and treatment of prostate cancer was a key driver that motivated Raymond James to get involved. For further information on how you can join The Father’s Day Walk/Run and support prostate cancer, check out the Foundation’s web site, www.prostatecancerbc.ca, or the event site, www.thefathersdayrun.ca.

Activities, festivities and competitions will be held here on the North Shore on both Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21. We will be host to figure skating, speed skating and curling. There is almost no better facility for this, as we all know. The McArthur Island Sports and Events Centre is home to the six-sheet McArthur Island Curling Club and a 1,500seat NHL rink and the 1,000-seat Olympic rink. Also for those who did not know, McArthur Island

You may even get to catch some curlers or pee wee skaters in action right now! Kamloops is home to many sports competitions, but almost none can make you prouder as a resident of the Tournament Capital than this one. Fundraiser for music scholarship fund To ensure the continued ability of the Richard Dickens Music Scholarship fund and to provide assistance to worthy applicants, fundraising efforts are being undertaken to supplement the fund’s capital. The scholarship was established from the funds of the late Richard (Dick) Dickens’ will. Dick was a much-loved and respected music educator and passionate advocate for the arts. The fund is awarded to students of School District 73 who are going on to post-secondary studies in music. The will stipulated

that the scholarship award was to be $2,000 per year, for up to four years, subject to the recipient maintaining sufficient grades and continuing to study music. The money Dick’s will provided for the scholarship was entrusted to the BC Interior Community Foundation (formerly the Kamloops Foundation) and a committee was established to write guidelines, solicit applications, review applicants and award the scholarship when merited. Two students have been awarded the scholarship to date. Both are currently

attending university music programs and achieving high academic and performance standing. The first fundraiser effort is a concert featuring the Kamloops Community Band and the Kamloops Big Band on Sunday, February 15 at 7:15pm at the Southwest Community Baptist Church, 700 Hugh Allen Drive. Refreshments will be served. There will be a silent auction in conjunction with the concert. For tickets, contact Shantel at 250-573-0003 or email shantelrenner@hotmail.com.

Fidelis Christian Academy, a classical and Christian school, is announcing its plans to open to the public for the start of the 2015-2016 school year. The new classical school, currently enrolling students for Kindergarten through Grade 2, plans to be located within the Kamloops Christian School at 750 Cottonwood Avenue. A classical curriculum is designed to provide an outstanding foundation in core academic disciplines, and also emphasizes history, formal logic, rhetoric, the Great Books curriculum, and classic languages, all centered on the study of the Bible and Christian faith. Latin is introduced in elementary starting in Grade 3. Students will also be given the choice of learning Koine Greek or Hebrew in the later grade levels in order to better understand the Scriptures. In future years Fidelis also plans to offer a distance-learning program for those parents who want their children educated at home. A part-time enrollment program is also in the works so that home-schooled students will have the opportunity to participate in the classroom environment. An informational meeting for interested parents will be held Tuesday, March 10 at 7:00pm at Calvary Community Church. Tuition and fees will be discussed, and curriculum will be on hand for parents to review. For more information visit www.fidelischristian. com or call at 250-4342708.

Physicist on Valentine’s Day Every Friday after work, a physicist goes down to the ice cream parlor, sits in the second-to-last seat, turns to the last seat, which is empty, and asks a girl, who isn’t there, if he can buy her an ice cream cone. The owner, who is used to the weird local university types, always shrugs but keeps quiet. But when Valentine’s Day arrives, and the physicist makes a particularly heart-wrenching plea into empty space, curiosity gets the better of him, and he says, “I apologize for my stupid question, but surely you know there is never a woman sitting in that last stool, man. Why do you persist in offering

ice cream to an empty space?” The physicist replies, “Well, according to quantum physics, empty space is never truly empty. Virtual particles come into existence and vanish all the time. You never know when the proper wave function will collapse and a girl might suddenly appear there.” The owner raises his eyebrows. “Really? Interesting. But couldn’t you just ask one of the girls who comes here every Friday if you could buy her a cone? Never know -she might say yes.” The physicist laughs. “Yeah, right. How likely is THAT to happen?”

A thoughtful Valentine gift Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day. “Yes,” came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist, “I’ve bought her a belt and a bag.”

kissing pen

Late one night, a burglar broke into a house that he thought was empty. He stealthily crept through the lounge and was stopped dead in his tracks when he heard a loud voice clearly saying, “Jesus is watching you!” Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again. “Jesus is watching you,” the voice rang out again. The thief stopped dead again. He was frightened out of his wits. Frantically, he looked all around. In a dark corner, he spotted a birdcage and in the cage was a parrot. He asked the parrot, “Was that you who said Jesus is watching me?” “Yes,” said the parrot. The burglar breathed a heavy sigh of relief and asked the parrot, “What’s your name?” “Moses,” said the bird. “That’s a stupid name for a parrot,” sneered the burglar. “What idiot named you Moses?” The parrot said, “The same idiot who named the rottweiler Jesus.”

I porksonally want to say ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’.

The fast way to hunt a bear Two men went bear hunting. While one stayed in the cabin, the other went out looking for a bear. He soon found a huge bear, shot at it but only wounded it. The enraged bear charged toward him, he dropped his rifle and started running for the cabin as fast as he could. He ran pretty fast but the bear was just a little faster and gained on him with every step. Just as he reached the open cabin

door, he tripped and fell flat. Too close behind to stop, the bear tripped over him and went rolling into the cabin.

The man jumped up, closed the cabin door and yelled to his friend inside, “You skin this one while I go and get another one!”

How do I make a living? “Frank Smith,” announced the judge. “For breaking into a house in the middle of the night, I sentence you to two year in prison.” “But your honor,” pleaded Frank. “Last time I was in court you sentenced me to a year in jail for breaking into a house in the day! If not in the middle of the night, and not in the middle of the day, just when am I supposed to earn my living?”

A cake dilemma

“Martha,” said Rosie to her best friend. “It was terrible what happened yesterday after the birthday party. You know how half of the birthday cake was left over? Well, I knew Bob would be fuming at me for eating it, with my diet and all, but I couldn’t help myself. It started with just a small nibble and before I knew it the whole cake was gone!” “Oh my!” clucked Martha. “Was Bob really upset?” “He never found it,” responded Rosie

The doctor visit A lady came in for a routine physical at the Doctor’s office. “Here,” said the nurse,

with a full smile. “I just baked another cake and ate half of it!”

Strange receipt

I was a little taken aback when I got my receipt from the funeral parlor, on the bottom of the receipt, after the bill, it read, “Thank you. Please come again.”

A man walked into the office in a school. “Excuse me,” he said to

Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) It’s time to start thinking of you again. Money continues to be a concern but that’s no reason to fight this weekend. Recent confusions left a mark but you’ll discover a way to rebound. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You’re looking better than you realize and those eyes really are pointed at you. Thoughts drift inwards and to the past but that’s no reason not to smile back. If they say hello, the rest is up to you. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Luck teams up with the unexpected and a boost in love is on the way. Buy a lottery ticket. When you revisit a creative venture you might decide it’s worth a risk. Luck is strong but energy is low. Yoga instead of weights and don’t push too hard. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The Moon in Scorpio is relationship time for Taurus and you’ll feel like revisiting some of the promises and missed communications of recent weeks. If you felt like giving up recently, don’t. Get out, be social and maybe invite that special someone out to join the group. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Thoughts are cloudy but work is a big concern. Revisit the ideas before you decide to move on. There’s a big opportunity for a career move. Take it. Rewards follow a challenge accepted. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) It’s time to regain financial focus but you’re also feeling frisky! To top it off a hobby becomes serious with potential financial rewards. Do your research because this can get expensive but have fun. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Financial ventures may have gone sideways recently but you should try again. As thinking clears love returns to say hello. Unusual news arrives from afar. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Is it luck or is it fate or is there something even larger guiding us? All of your prayers aren’t going to be answered in one swoop but a cloud is going to lift and you’ll be one large step closer to where destiny is waiting for you. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You may be thinking about love but attention is required for your health and your business. Start planning your success for the spring with a trip to the gym. You’re going to want to look your best when love comes calling next month. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Close your eyes and go for it. Valentine’s Day or not, you’re lucky in love. This is double for business. Daily shakeups continue but you now have the strength to roll through. Chance is currently helping efforts. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’ll have to undo a bit of the mess from the last couple of weeks but that’s no reason to spend Valentine’s Day alone. Invite a friend over and see where it goes. Love has a feeling of fate and finally draws a smile. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’ll want to get out and network. It’ll be fun to be social and pad the accounts at the same time. Home on the other hand is a different story with sudden matters calling you away from the fun. Love is waiting on an errand.
