Mamma Mia!! ABBA-inspired affair supports the SPCA Judy Basso has been an event planner for 28 years and the upcoming Mamma Mia Party is already a highlight of her career. “I saw the play in Las Vegas, and then I caught the movie, and afterwards I thought—I just have to do a ‘Mamma Mia’ themed party.” When Judy learned that Western Canada Theatre’s was doing their own production last winter, the party plan returned to the forefront of her mind. In fact, Judy included a questionnaire in the WCT programs to gauge interest from audience members. “The response was really positive, people were really excited”. And so—the Mamma Mia Party was born—or “Björn”, if you can appreciate a solid ABBA related pun. “Mamma Mia” is about Sophie, a young woman on the eve of her wedding who recently discovers her mother’s twenty-year-old journal detailing three separate romantic entanglements. When the young bride realizes that one of three former flames could be her father, she invites all them to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna. All three men show up and that’s where the fun really begins. The story unfolds on a pristine Greek island, told through the musical magic of the ABBA songbook. One of the most commercially successful acts in music history,

ABBA was internationally revered from the mid 70’s to the early 80’s. The Swedish pop group, a foursome made up of two couples, Agnetha Fältskog, and Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, have enjoyed longstanding success with resurgences in popularity, especially with “Mamma Mia’s” own international success. As for the event, guests can expect a Grecian ambiance and a gorgeous Greek feast courtesy of Romeo’s Uptown Chef’s catering. During the film screening, guests are encouraged to sing, dance, drink, and feast. Once the credits roll, there will be a DJ and Karaoke for those thirsting to belt out more ABBA classics. Dirty Laundry Winery will be a sponsor of the evening: “How appropriate,” Judy laughs, “this film is all about the ‘dirty laundry’” This event is in support of the SPCA. The organization is currently building a new and improved BC SPCA Kamloops & District Community Animal Centre. The new facility will also include an in-house Spay/Neuter Clinic. The SPCA has currently secured more than $3.55 million, but there is still work to be done to reach their goal of $4.8 million. Help the SPCA help domestic, farm and wild animals, and have a marvellous time doing it. The SPCA will be on hand

selling 50/50 tickets and guests are welcome to make additional donations. Get a group of friends together, whip up some ABBA-inspired costumes and join in on the fun. “Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime event,” Judy says. The Mamma Mia Party takes place at the Coast Kamloops

Wetlands project on Hillside Drive will expand stormwater basin and restore wetlands In conjunction with grants from the National Wetlands Conservation Fund, the City of Kamloops has initiated work on a

wetlands project on Hillside Drive, in the Dufferin basin stormwater detention area. The work began this week and will run until the

end of February. The project will involve restoring wetlands in the area and expanding a stormwater basin.

MARCHING IN SOLIDARITY

Kamloops Film Festival

Over 200 people attended the Solidarity March and Rally for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples on February 14. Participants gathered at Spirit Square to march, drum, sing in support of equity and justice for family members, friends, and communities disproportionately affected by systemic violence.

Once restored, the wetlands will improve habitat for flora and fauna, including waterfowl, amphibians, raptors, pollinators, insects, birds, and animals. The wetlands will also help replenish groundwater, clean runoff from urban areas, and reduce flooding during large storm events. The project will begin with removing man-made structures and excavating four basins. Site preparation will include grading, swales, and berms and the placement of snags and coarse woody debris. Later in the spring, crews will work to revegetate the area by planting native vegetation, trees, and shrubs and seeding disturbed areas. Once the project is complete, interpretive signage will be developed to increase understanding and appreciation of the wetlands. If residents or visitors to the area have questions about the project, they can contact Kirsten Wourms, Crew Leader - Natural Resources, at kwourms@kamloops.ca

Kamloops celebrates its 10th annual World Kidney Day Thursday, March 9. This international event is hosted by more than 150 countries worldwide and promotes awareness about kidney health and how to prevent kidney disease, with a special focus on obesity this year. In honour of World Kidney Day, a free health fair will take place on March 9 at Northills Centre on the Kamloops North Shore, from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Several health vendors will be in attendance to offer information and there will be a chance to win free door prizes. Free blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol checks will also be offered in an effort to identify risk factors that may lead to kidney disease. Those who struggle with hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol are at an increased risk for developing kidney disease. Across Canada, kidney disease is currently one of the top ten leading causes of death. This event is a joint initiative between Thompson Rivers University’s School of Nursing and the Kamloops Chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC and Yukon Branch. Join the cause to keep kidneys healthy in Kamloops!

Over $555,000 invested in Community Infrastructure Two projects in Western Canada will receive a combined investment of over $555,000 through the Government of Canada’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale – Langley City, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, made the announcement recently during a visit to the Tournament Capital Centre. The first project will provide $500,000 to the City of Kamloops to replace the indoor track at the Tournament Capital

Centre. Funding will assist with the removal of the old track material, as well as the installation of a new track, lines, bleachers, lockers, and storage containers. “The track replacement will be a legacy project that will reach beyond the community. This project will help to ensure the Tournament Capital Centre remains the venue of choice for regional, provincial, national and international events,” says City of Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar. The second project will be delivered by the Skeetchestn Indian Band, who will receive funding of over $55,000 to add a playground to their multipurpose community park.

This playground will allow children in the community to have access to a common area outside of their school, where they can enjoy the benefits of recreation and exercise. “The addition of a playground at Skeetchestn Benchlands Multi-purpose Community Park will provide long-term benefits to the children, parents and grand-parents of our community and neighboring communities joining us during sporting and gathering events,” says Skeetchestn Indian Band Chief Dr. Ron Ignace. “The 2300 sq. ft. playground will allow for a safe, secure and accessible space for children to enjoy. It also makes everyone proud when our infra-

structure is improved. We are grateful for Canada’s financial contribution and everyone who supported this initiative.” The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is part of Canada 150 Celebrates, the Government of Canada’s celebration of our country’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. Budget 2016 provided an additional $150 million over two years to Canada’s Regional Development Agencies to deliver further community funding across the country, starting in 2016-17, with Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) being responsible for administering the program in Western Canada.

My favorite part about writing is the sweet satisfaction of emailing the completed product and getting on with my life until the next assignment comes along five minutes later. Other than that, I absolutely relish the interview process. Perhaps a little pencil-pushing minion would be helpful. I could go full-Oprah on my subject; crack into the infinite pool of emotion and wisdom of my interviewee, while someone else fetches coffee and records every word. “Write that down kid; I’m making history here.” I recently had the opportunity to interview comedian Tom Green about his Snow Jam Comedy and Hip Hop Tour happening in Sun Peaks on February 24. I’ve mentioned this to a few folks in their twenties, and they just stare at me blankly. “He was married to Drew Barrymore?” generally garnered an “ah hah” moment of recognition. “That guy.” Uncertain that an interview would really happen, I did my due diligence in the way of research, and prepared an article in advance. Green is actually quite a prolific performer; he has come a long way from “The Tom Green Show”, which originated on public access programming in the mid 90’s. Much of his career is grounded in television, film, internet, radio and stand up…oh, also hip hop. Who can forget? The morning of the phone call, I was feeling like a teenaged girl waiting for a boy to call. There is something about a celebrity, whether A or D list, that makes you want to be cucumber cool. NOTE TO MY ROOMMATE

Just doing their job

The police were just doing their job. When someone called 911, then hung up, the police went to that location to see if there was a problem. It turns out that it was a motel where two drug dealers were staying in different rooms. One tried to call the other one in room 119, but dialed 911 by mistake.

Grocery Store Test: Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop at the grocery store. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage. Dressing Test: Obtain one large, unhappy, live octopus. Stuff into a small net bag making sure that all arms stay inside. Feeding Test: Obtain a large plastic milk jug. Fill halfway with water. Suspend from the ceiling with a stout cord. Start the jug swinging. Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal (such as Fruit Loops or Cheerios) into the mouth of the jug, while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor. Night Test: Prepare by obtaining a small cloth bag and fill it with eight to 12 pounds of sand. Soak it thoroughly in water. At 8pm begin to waltz and hum with the bag until 9pm. Lay down your bag and set your alarm for 10pm. Get up, pick up your bag, and sing every song you have ever heard. Make up about a dozen

more and sing these too until 4am. Set alarm for 5am. Get up and make breakfast. Keep this up for five years. Look cheerful. Physical Test (Women): Obtain a large beanbag chair and attach it to the front of your clothes. Leave it there for nine months. Now remove ten of the beans. Physical Test (Men): Go to the nearest drug store. Set your wallet on the counter. Ask the clerk to help himself. Now proceed to the nearest food store. Go to the head office and arrange for your paycheck to be directly deposited to the store. Purchase a newspaper. Go home and read it quietly for the last time. Final Assignment: Find a couple that already has a small child. Lecture them on how they can improve their discipline, patience, tolerance, toilet training, and child’s table manners. Suggest many ways they can improve. Emphasize to them that they should never allow their children to run riot. Enjoy this experience. It will be the last time you will have all the answers.
