R/C Race Club gets ready to rev their engines Ever feel like you missed your calling at the Indy 500? Love to speed, but don’t want the traffic ticket? Well, there is a team who is waiting to meet you! The Thompson Valley R/C Race Club offered races of various scales with radio-controlled vehicles, on both indoor and outdoor courses, throughout the year. The Race Club is a non-profit organization and has been operating since 1992. From its beginnings at the gymnasium of UCC, now Thompson Rivers University, to a warehouse where The Great Canadian Super Store now stands. The club moved on to McDonald Park for a couple of years. These days, the club spends their winter months (October to March) in the basement gymnasium at Catholic school Our Lady of Perpetual Help on 235 Poplar Street. Summer racing (mid to late April onward) takes place behind the Valleyview Arena in the summer. Boni Braem is the only female racer at the moment and (L-R) 1st place - Graham Lye of Penticton,

Traveler numbers up at Kamloops Airport

What a load

Kamloops Airport has announced the traveler numbers for the month of January as compared to the same period in the previous year. The monthly traveler and year-to-date traveler numbers were both increased by 10.3 per cent over the last year. The low Canadian dollar combined with excellent winter conditions is bringing travelers from across Canada, the United States and other international locations as well. The following aircraft movements were recorded in November as compared to the same period in the previous year, the Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) remained even 2015. Deal reached with library staff

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s Board of Directors has confirmed that a three year agreement has been reached with the more than 100 BCGEU members employed by the TNRD Library System. The BCGEU members ratified the agreement February 15, after a tentative agreement was reached on January 27. The term of the new agreement is from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018. It provides for modest annual wage increases of 1.5 per cent over the three years of the term and there is an introduction of a tiered wage scale for all new hires. “Ratifying another three-year agreement provides stabil-

The North Shore is gearing up for an exciting 2016 With 2015 in the rearview mirror we’re gearing up for an exciting 2016! This Wednesday, February 24 is the annual general meeting of the North Shore Business Association. The boundaries of our business improvement area take in the former village of Brocklehurst and the former municipality of North Kamloops. It’s basically east from the airport to the North Thompson River and south from Westmount to the Thompson River. If you are a commercial property owner, or the business tenant of a commercial property within our business area; you’re a member and we want you to attend! In 2016 we’ll be building on what’s been working. One of those things is beautification projects. ‘Beautification’ when it comes to neighbourhood and city planning is a bit of a misnomer. Beautification can mean anything from the great improvements at the corner of Fortune and Leigh Roads (remember the ugly gravel triangle that used to be there?); to the new sidewalks, multi-use path and greenery that are part of the airport gateway plans; the new lighting and pedestrian upgrades in the Tranquille Market corridor; to mural work that livens up buildings

and helps to prevent vandalism. This year our focus will be on mural work. We’re excited about starting this project and are looking forward to sprucing up some of the buildings on the North Shore! In 2013 we launched our very successful “We are the North Shore!” two year marketing campaign. That campaign wrapped up in November of 2015. It included starting the Overlanders Day family fun festival that now happens every August, our annual Treat Street Hallowe’en promotion, Christmas Open House and promoting our great North

Shore businesses and communities in print, radio, TV and in online and social mediums. This week we will be launching our new two year marketing campaign that will still be shouting “We are the North Shore!” but will also be including some new ideas and messaging. Watch for our TV commercials to start this week! You can stay up to date on North Shore events and what we have coming up in 2015 through our website www.nsbia.com, our Facebook page and by signing up to our regular e-newsletter. Let’s keep proudly saying “We are the North Shore!” and show what we can accomplish when we work together! Steven L. Puhallo, executive director, North Shore Business Association.

Volunteer and have fun doing it The Salvation Army, located at 344 Poplar Street, is in need of enthusiastic volunteers to help out with meals, games and activities for their Friday evening Family Fun Nights from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Duties include food prep, set-up/take down, games, crafts and other engaging activities with the families. A police information check, including the vulnerable sector check is required. To volunteer for this position, you must be 19 years old or older. If you are interested in being a Family Fun Night volunteer, contact 250554-1611 or 250-819-0017 for more information.

A talking duck A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. The bartender looks at him and says, “Hang on! You’re a duck.” “I see your eyes are working,” replies the duck. “And you can talk!” exclaims the bartender. “I see your ears are working, too,” says the duck. “Now if you don’t mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?” “Certainly, sorry about that.” says the bartender as he pours the duck a pint. “It’s just we don’t get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing around this way?” “I’m working on the building site across the road,” explains the duck. “I’m a plasterer.” The flabbergasted bartender cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out

Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Wherever you go people are noticing your every move, which is great for that creative project you’ve been working on. A new job is presenting itself and you’ve got the green light to make it happen. Love is closer than you think but you’ll have to go more than half way to ignite that spark. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Your career and public image are in the spotlight but all you can think about is escaping to some exotic location. If you don’t have time for a full out vacation then perhaps a quick weekend getaway with someone special will do the trick to calm the travel bug. Love is expanding your reality and opening your heart to more than you thought possible. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’re frisky and you’d like to get out and play with your closest playmate but you’re not sure that your friends agree with your latest infatuation. If you think it’s meant to be and you believe that it has the staying power and security that you’ve been looking for then go for it. It’s your life. Speak from a loving heart and loving hearts will listen. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’re currently attracting love in large doses but your heart is really focused on your income and personal security. You are still very lucky in personal finances and although it’s time to team up for best results, be careful. Some members of the team will make promises they won’t be able to keep. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) The spotlight shifts to your partner and closest relationship, which is great but somehow you’re feeling lost or neglected in the mix. Yes, you’d like everyone to recognize how special you are all on your own but this week it’s team time. Step into the spotlight together and see how much brighter you’ll actually shine. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A secret you’ve wanted to keep about your past might come to light this week. Be careful of prying eyes. Children are bringing you rewards beyond the obvious so keep your heart open and your attitude light and playful. It’s time to look at the fine print hidden inside of a recent decision. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Even though you’re our most intense and passionate sign, you’re still remarkably patient. Although it’s not emotionally easy and you do tend to put yourself through the ringer when waiting for others, it’s something you’re actually very good at. Have some faith in the knowledge that destiny hasn’t forgotten about you. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It’s time to tell the bosses at work about what’s happening at home. This week you’d like nothing more than to put in some extra hours and complete that project you’ve been working on but home and family require your attention. Problems with your past begin to ease. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Dreaming of a winter escape but stuck at home in the snow? Don’t let it get you down. You are in a very strong money cycle and although you could really use a break, you should make the most of the opportunity while it’s here. Love is waiting in line at the bank. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) The spotlight is on your personal finances but this week you’d like to lend someone else a hand. Be careful where you place your trust. Love is looking for you but your friends are still causing problems. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Sudden smiles of affection give your ego a need boost of love. Work and your public image are taking a hit but that’s no reason to hide yourself away. A secret affair or love from the past returns with interesting news. You’ll want to go the extra mile for your partner but this week is your turn to shine. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The plan you’ve been working on behind the scenes comes to light. It hasn’t been easy but somehow you pulled everything together and things are going to be ok. Even though the gym is calling and you’d like to spend some quality time with the treadmill, don’t forget about your mental and emotional health.
