Locks of Love and laughter on Valentine’s Day If you are looking for something fun and entertaining this Valentine’s Day, look no further than the Pogue Mahone here on the edge of Brocklehurst. The popular Irish Ale House is pulling out all the stops and bringing you a night you won’t soon forget full of laughs, great music, good times and right here in your own neighbourhood. Who knows, cupid may even strike you with his arrow of love while you are enjoying the festivities. “So the event is called Valentine’s Day Hair MassACURE,” explains Mia Sheldon, entertainment organizer extraordinaire at the pub. “Its a fundraiser for #chemokidswigs #locksoflove.” If you haven’t heard of Locks of Love before, they are a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthesis. Most of the children helped by Locks of
their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. In an effort to support these little people, the Pogue Mahone will be throwing a giant party and will be auctioning off some very cool items including a framed KISS record signed by everyone in the band and much, much more. The fun only begins there as they have some great entertainment and will be giving haircuts as well! “The night will include raffle draws, silent auction with some very cool Rock and Roll items,” continues Mia. “We are planning five haircuts including three ponytail cuts and two full haircuts. There will be bidding for cutting hair with highest bid getting to choose which ponytail they want to cut off. All usable hair will be donated to our chosen charities of the evening. Our proud sponsors for the event are Coopers Foods, Canada Logo, Surplus Herby’s, Molson Canadian Rocks and of course our lovely hair stylists from Headhunters who will kindly donate their services to clean these people up!” - continued on page 2

City Council Charts Interior Health a BC top employer for third year Next Four Years For the third year in a row, Inte- and community involvement. 2011, Interior Health has conducted
Kamloops City Council and senior administration met for one and a half days to determine Council’s strategic priorities. The process started with a review of issues and opportunities around economy, infrastructure, livability, environment and governance, which were the goals from the 2012 - 2014 plan. Key topics that emerged in the review were explored in greater detail to determine short-term priorities and longer term direction. The goals from the previous strategic plan were reinforced and will serve as the overarching framework. Council agreed on the following immediate short-term priorities: Cultural Centre Business Plan, Official Community Plan, Service Capacity Review, Industrial Land Strategy and Downtown Revitalization Bylaw Review. The next steps to finalize the plan will be to bring the full draft plan, which includes additional medium and longer-term priorities, to an open Council meeting for adoption. Gord McIntosh, facilitator for the session, observed, “This planning session showed that Council is off to a great start based on their high level of collaboration in the process.”
rior Health has been named one of BC’s Top Employers, a designation recognizing employers in B.C. that provide exceptional workplaces. “Our congratulations to Interior Health as it takes this award for the third year running,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “This is an employer that has committed itself to developing a healthy, engaged workforce and it shows. Interior Health has a low turn-over rate and a large number of long-term employees.” The competition considers various criteria, such as recruitment and retention, high employment standards, physical workplace, work and social atmosphere, benefits, time off, employee communications, performance management, training and skills development,
“As an organization whose business is all about care, we recognize that every person matters,” said Interior Health Board chair Erwin Malzer. “Interior Health has a culture of achievement, collaboration and innovation, in a region that offers beautiful landscapes and a great lifestyle. It also offers benefits that are among the best in the country.” The organization has placed a strong emphasis on employee engagement at every level. Since
a survey of its employees every two years to gauge their thoughts and feelings about their workplace. This feedback is built into team action plans to further increase employee engagement. Cpl. Michaud returns to Kamloops Kamloops RCMP is able to confirm that Cpl. Michaud has been transferred back to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops to continue his recovery. Cpl. Michaud was transported to Vancouver just before Christmas when he suffered complications during his recovery after being shot on December 3, 2014. His condition has now stabilized to the point where he was able to return to Kamloops.
See all of your favourite divas in one night! – continued from page 1 The entertainment of the evening is Bonnie Kilroe, a female celebrity impersonator from Vancouver. She is bringing along some of her favorite divas! Bonnie, the one-woman show, does incredible impersonations of most of your favourite female stars. It is a pleasure for her to be in Kamloops and the Pogue Mahone is thrilled she has chosen to bring
her talent to them. “We will have tickets in advance at Pogue Mahone for $20 inclusive,” finishes Mia. “Plus tickets will also be available at Kamloopslive.ca for $20 plus applicable fees until February 13. If there are any left (which I highly doubt) they will be available at the door for $30 on the day of the event.” It is important to note that over one-quarter of the tickets are al-
ready sold which is remarkable for Kamloops as we are such a last minute city. Doors are at 8:00pm with the show starting at 8:30pm. No reservations, hostess seating. What a great date night or a night just out with friends... have some dinner first and then take in a fun and entertaining show! The Pogue Mahone is located at 843 Desmond Street, just behind 7-11. Fluctuations in travel numbers at Kamloops Airport
For the month of December at the Kamloops Airport, monthly travelers numbers decreased by two percent while year-to-date travelers increased by 7.2 percent. The two percent decrease is likely a reflection of the drop in the number of people who are working in resource industries and who commute to those jobs. On the upside, the lower Canadian dollar and lower fuel costs are expected to drive more tourism visits to the region. The boost in numbers this year can be attributed to increased cargo and courier activity related to the growth of the local economy. Unplug and Play tea style

Community fundraiser for Peter Friedel Dear Community Partners and Friends, Family and friends are asking for community support to raise funds for Peter Friedel. To the Kamloops community, Peter, would be best described as a loving husband, father of two children, recent business owner and long- time resident of Kamloops. In addition, Peter volunteered within the community and for many years as the assistant trainer to the Kamloops Blazers Hockey Team, Kamloops Storm JR B Team, and the Regional Midget’s Hockey Team and as the trainer for the Kamloops Venom Lacrosse Team. He is a member of the North Kamloops Elks and the Knight of Columbus. Until recently Peter and his wife owned and operated A-1 Auto on the North Shore. However, due to complications with his
diabetes they were forced to close the business. Peter was diagnosed with diabetes in his early 20’s and has overcome many hurdles over the past 30 years. Unfortunately during the past two years Peter has had to endure three major surgeries resulting in the loss of the major-
ity of both of his feet. He requires daily dialysis and is waiting for a kidney transplant. Friends and family of Peter are working together to organize a fundraiser to pay for renovations that are needed to make it easier for Peter to access the bathroom in the family home. We are asking for your support to provide items for a silent auction that will be held in conjunction with a Fundraiser Dinner and Dance being held on March 7th at St. John Vianney Church, 2826 Bank Road. Everyone is welcome, please join us, tickets are available for the Dinner, Dance and Silent Auction by contacting Caroline Ralston at 250-377-1699, Brenda Thompson at 250319-1956 or Maryann Bruneau at 250-573-4247. Tickets are $25.00 per person. Doors open at 5:30pm
with dinner served at 6:30pm. Dance to follow with the music provided by Frank Stofanik. If you are able to provide an item or items for the silent auction, or make a donation, please call Caroline or Maryann to make arrangements for a family member or friend to pick up the item(s). All donations are greatly appreciated. We thank you for your generous support and consideration in helping us to improve Peter’s quality of life. Please note any funds raised over and above the amount required to renovate the bathroom will be put into a trust fund, which will be used to assist Peter when he is able to go to Vancouver for a kidney transplant. Manshdi Pharmacy takes pride in serving the community h eer can' wit Now with two locations in Kamloops, Manshadi Pharmacies have been in Kamloops for 15 years. Under the direction of owner and head pharmacist Missagh Manshadi, the pharmacies prides themselves on not only providing your medications but helping each and every person that walks through their door on a path to better wellness. Their location here on the North Shore is part of a bigger, unique investment that has helped to bring development and community investment to the Tranquille Corridor. “We are the only independent and locally owned pharmacy on the North Shore explains Missagh. “It’s important for people to realize that supporting small, local independents is paramount to the local economy.” Being locally owned and operated is very important. It means that each dollar that comes through the doors, stays right here in Kamloops. This is very self evident and in addition to the 20 staff that is employed at Manshadi Pharmacies, we were also the recipients of its location on Tranquille which includes the pharmacy, a walk-in clinic which plays host to seven physicians, a 38 unit affordable seniors housing project and much more to come in the future. “We have 10,000 square feet more of commercial space that can be leased to health related tenants,” continues Missagh. “Another thing people don’t realize about this building is the free parking on the second floor and the abundance of available street parking around it.”

All monies donated will be used to support Crime Stoppers programs in the province where the money is collected. 7-Eleven Canada and Crime Stoppers in Canada have a maintained a long-standing partnership in fostering safer communities. In 2014, thanks to the support of 7-Eleven store customers through the donation canister program, over $28,000 was collected and donated to local provincial Crime Stoppers programs. These funds are used to ensure that the Crime Stoppers 24/7 anonymous tip line is available for use by all citizens. When a citizen becomes aware of criminal activity, he can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- TIPS and anonymously report what they know. Tipsters can also provide information online through an encrypted tip taking system. Tipsters could receive a cash reward of up to $2000 upon an arrest and charge.
KYSA asking for your help The volunteer vice-president of the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA), Colin Guise, is seriously ill in hospital. Colin suffered a brain abscess just before Christmas. He has undergone two operations since being admitted to hospital and there’s a possibly of the need for another. The prognosis is that Colin will be in hospital and off work for an extended period. KYSA executive director Keith Liddiard, says: “Colin is one of the most dedicated members our association has amongst its corps of parent-volunteers. He has taken on the unheralded role of chairing the KYSA’s Discipline and Volunteer Screening Committees for the past two years and has done a remarkable job in this challenging role. He has also served on the KYSA board for close to a decade and has acted as vice president for the past two years. “Colin is also very passionate about the officiating side of our Beautiful Game and has refereed in both adult and youth leagues for many years,” adds Liddiard. “He has also been an active member and director of the Kamloops Soccer Referees Association for many years. “As we all know, incidents like this can cause a great hardship on a family––particularly financial-
ly,” Liddiard acknowledges. With this in mind, the KYSA is asking the Kamloops soccer community to come to the aid of the Guise family through a donation of whatever they can afford. The KYSA has made a donation to kick things off. Individuals can donate online or in person. Go to kysa.net and click the “Register Now” button on the home page. Click “Colin Guise Donation Account”. This will lead to a form that will allow people to donate $25, $50 or $100 on-line. Unfortunately, the KYSA system will not accept any other denominations. Drop off a cash or cheque donation at Hansport, 1 - 8th Street; at the office in the Kamloops Soccer Dome or at the KYSA office on McArthur Island between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm, Tuesday through Friday. The KYSA can issue a receipt. However, the organization does not have the ability to offer a taxdeductible receipt at this time. Every penny of every dollar donated will go to the Guise family. “Colin has a tough few months ahead of him,” says Liddiard. “Whatever can be done to ease the burden on Colin and his family will be greatly appreciated.” Enquiries can be directed to the KYSA office at 250-376-2750.

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if a strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

Coldest Night of the Year returns New Life Mission is encouraging Kamloops residents to bundle up and raise cold, hard cash for The Coldest Night of the Year Walk. A family-friendly winter fundraising event for Kamloops homeless, hungry and hurting, the walk takes place on the evening of February 21. Taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year will help participants understand the experience of surviving on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to aid the work of New Life Mission in providing much-needed support to members of our community. Coldest Night walks will be taking place on the same night in an anticipated 80 cities from coast to coast. The Kamloops walk begins and ends at New Life Mission, located at 181 West Victoria Street, where walkers will register, turn in the results of their fundraising efforts, and return at the end of the evening for a warm celebration meal. Donning iconic blue-and-white toques, participants will walk a 2km, 5km or 10km route, and will warm up with toasty drinks at rest stops along the way. This is New Life Mission’s fourth year taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year and they’re aiming to raise $40,000 for the work with the homeless in Kamloops. An expected 300+ walkers and 30+ teams, including staff and friends of New Life Mission are expected to brave the cold winter’s night. New Life Mission has been serving Kamloops for over 30 years, and the boost in funds resulting from the Coldest Night of the Year will benefit their clients in a time of the year known historically for low levels of giving. For more information on the walk, contact Carol Paulsen or Stan Dueck at the New Life Mission 250-372-9898.

North Shore echo
February 4, 2015 n 11
echo stargazer Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Love and money fill your mood but keep the party small. A private adventure with someone close is all you need to see a new way. You might not be able to make your moves just yet but things begin to clear. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You might want to buy a lottery ticket. No, you’re not especially lucky right now but you will have a sudden financial shift. You’re glowing and attracting. Dress to impress and wondering eyes will notice. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You can definitely be a “go it alone” kind of sign but right now there’s a feeling of destiny in your relationships. Ask your partner for their opinion. They hold the second set of eyes you’ve been hoping for. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The team is calling and you’re more than ready and willing to step out and play. Sure, communication is off, plans will have to be re-laid, and the love affair will have to be reexamined. But that means you’re going to be social, set plans and encounter a surprising love affair. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) There’s a balance out there waiting. Somehow the attention required at home will even out all of the energy that’s calling on the career front. You won’t get everything but you’ll make peace with your day. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Your inner nerd is on overdrive but it’s looking to help you attract money. Look at the big picture and let the details sort themselves. Romance blossoms on a working holiday. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Money is arriving though the team but make sure you don’t get lost in the mix. With the Moon in your sign to begin the week, you’ll be shining and ready for the unexpected. Be careful in business but love is strong. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You set a plan and stuck to it. I’m proud of you. This love cycle, allow some flexibility in the plan and it just might last. An old friend leads to an unexpected windfall. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Buy a lottery ticket. Luck is on your side and it’ll give you something to smile about if delays get you down. Networking and sharing dreams lead to a new financial plan. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Let go of old grudges. This is your time for love and you don’t want to waste the energy. Along with love, recent financial efforts are beginning to pay off. Take note Scorpio. It’s good but only as good as the effort you put in. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) The Moon has you thinking career and making a bigger name for yourself. Energy however is directed towards your home life. Helping a family member surprisingly solves both problems and opens the door for love. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’re going to want to reach for the books to help through a financial question. A little research goes a long way. Messages are mixed but your words are golden. Ask for clarity. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
