Derby Dolls welcome new team members to take a spin Looking for an exciting challenge and physical activity with a bit of an edge? Need an alterego and a safe place to channel your energy? Tournament City Derby Dolls (TCDD) is looking for “fresh meat” to join the co-ed, adult, and junior Roller Derby League. The Fresh Meat training program is open to both men and women aged 18 and older. The Friday classes run from 7:15pm-9pm and start on Friday, January 13. Tenacious Double D, long-time skater, and current TCDD chair, laughs upon noting the ominous date that the training starts on, “What a great day to get going!” Known as “Boobs” (her team number is 8008), Double D has been with the TCDD for over six years. The mother of two saw a post on social media, watched a practice and immediately went out to purchase skates. Admittedly she did try to rustle up a friend to join her. In the end, she did go on her own, without that safety net of the buddy system, which she recalls being rather exciting. “It’s empowering to do something by yourself, for yourself.” Of course, it’s always mildly intimidating to take on a new sport, but Double D refers to derby doll life as being “fun, fast-paced and empowering.” She counts her teammates as

8th Annual Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive The 8th annual Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive, sponsored by Kamloops Honda in partnership with Literacy in Kamloops (LinK), takes place until January 28. The goals of this project are to increase book ownership in all homes and encourage a love of reading. Over the past seven years, more than 75,000 children’s books have been donated. Throughout the year, volunteer coordinator Faith Bailey and her husband, Al organize teams of volunteers to sort, clean, and label books. Volunteers distribute the books to Bright Red Bookshelves at 22 school and community locations. More than 500 volunteer hours are committed to this project each year. LinK invites the community to drop off new or gently used children’s books at Kamloops Honda until January 28. Emergency appeal from New Life Community With an Arctic air flow sweeping through Kamloops, temperatures continue to plummet, and so many of us couldn’t imagine being outside for long, let alone not having the warm clothing and food to sustain us. The New Life Community has put out an emergency appeal to the community to help share warmth! “We know we’ve just come out of our Christmas campaign with so many people donating, but we have a real urgent need on our hands” says Executive Director Stan Dueck. “With the brutally cold temperatures, we see many from our community come to our Outreach Centre and instead of just coming in for a meal, they’re here for hours to stay warm, have a warm beverage and meal, and hopefully find some clothing to help them survive another day. Needless to say, being open 24/7 has dramatically increased our expenses and we’re asking our community to help us, and urgently.” New Life Community has issued an urgent call for donations. Stan notes that financial assistance helps them designate dollars to where they’re needed the most. But the non-profit organization

“Team Childless” and the far, far away family After a day of sledding, eating and lounging, my husband and I dropped his sister off at the airport. Our last meal, like all our last meals, offered a blending of laughter and melancholy. Another trip about to end. Standing in the domestic departure area, I burst into tears like a drunk teenager who didn’t know they were just about to vomit. I hate goodbyes in movies, books and in real life. I can’t even pretend to be cool about it. If I try to refrain from an outburst of emotion, I get a James Dean-meets sour lemon squint, and speak like I’m trying to hold smoke in my lungs. If I must say goodbye, I prefer to be the rogue traveller on route to the next adventure. Kate was heading off to Mexico. We were heading home to the dog…and more months of darkness and bitter cold. The following morning, Facebook memories reminded us of our hot and sunny beach vacations we’ve had in the past years, and it made me want to spew obscenities at the snow and sprint to the airport with a sombrero in hand. “I’m coming

Zealand, there has always been a far far away family to stay in contact with and say goodbye to. As kids, talking to our relatives in Wales was agony. The phone lines of the 1980’s mixed with thick sing-song Welsh accents, and the sheer mania of Christmas day makes for an unfocused conversation that demands repeating yourself and asking others to repeat themselves. Everything goes awry immediately after “Merry Christmas grandma…how are you?” With the advent of Skype, and the enthusiastic novelty of having Skype took the yearly phone calls to the next level: repeating yourself and asking others to repeat themselves…on-camera. It’s exceedingly difficult to have a deep and meaningful conversation that way. In the end, you say “hello”, “thank you” and “I love you” and hope that is enough. With each adventure, we are grateful for the time and experience. As always, we temper our sadness by planning the next journey; the next thing to look forward to—the exhilaration of hello that temporarily erases the heartbreak of goodbye.

On Friday night, January 13, the WolfPack basketball games against Winnipeg have been deemed the TRU awareness night for a new U Sports campaign to be part of the “Bell Let’s Talk about Mental Illness” initiative. All schools in Canada are involved in this campaign. On Bell Let’s Talk Day, Bell donates 5 cents to Canadian mental health programs for each of these interactions: Every text message, mobile and long distance call made by Bell Canada and Bell Aliant customers. Every tweet using #BellLetsTalk. Every view of the Bell Let’s Talk Day video. Every Instagram post using #BellLetsTalk. The national day is Wednesday, January 25, but on the Friday, January 13, TRU will have their athletes in the stands wearing Blue “Bell Let’s Talk” toques along with them putting together “thought bubbles about mental health” which they will be encouraged to post
on social media. As well, they will have representatives from TRU mental health services and/or Canadian Mental Health with an informational booth. Fans will be encouraged to get involved by putting together ‘thought bubbles’ and they will be given stickers, toques and the chance to take their photos at a special station set aside at the Tournament Capital Centre. In advance of the awareness campaign, a PSA has been produced by Bell utilizing USport athletes. There is another with Canada West athletes including three from TRU: Katie Harding of Women’s Soccer, Nicole Phillips of Cheerleading and Tim Edge of Men’s Volleyball. Each of them have been touched by mental illness. Phillips, in fact, spearheads the mental health support group at TRU and met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year when they paid a visit to BC. Game times Friday are 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
