Boredom busters for those summer time blues Mid July….not necessarily known for cloudy weather and drizzly weekends; even if the weather was perfect every day, this is the point in the summer when the novelty of post-school year “nothing to do” creeps into a state of total boredom. First of all, turn off the TV, ditch anything with a screen! Board games or card games guarantee a fun, bonding experience. Or lose yourself a good book; lounge 1/4inbanner in the shade with a novel from the North Kamloops Library. (Maybe pop into The Crazy and the German for lunch after that hunger-inducing quest for the perfect summer read!) ing sandcastles. Swimming is a favourite summer holiday pastime and the Brock Pool is an excellent option. The water park at Westsyde’s Centennial Park is a blast too! Between that and the petting zoo, the river and the playground, you can play the day away with ease! “Eating popsicles or ice cream in the sun” is also highly recommended summer activity. The mention of Menchies on Tranquille Road was greeted with great enthusiasm. There is also excellent ice cream and other goodies to be found at the Donut King, also on Tranquille Road. Pack a picnic! Check out NuLeaf grocers for a wide variety of fresh fruits and veggies and other healthy snack options. Hungry for more? Delays to Grasslands Boulevard Road Improvement Project Plans to construct Grasslands Boulevard between Woodrush Drive and Cantle Drive are temporarily on hold. The project was originally scheduled for completion this summer, however, a number of grade and access challenges have delayed finalization of the detailed project design. City of Kamloops Capital Projects manager, Darren Crundwell, anticipates that once the challenges have been addressed and the project design finalized, the project will go out to tender this summer/fall, with construction completed in spring 2017. The road project, which will result in the completion of Grasslands Boulevard from Batchelor Drive to Westsyde Road, will improve neighbourhood connectivity, provide a secondary road access for residents and emergency services, and allow for future improved transit service. Earlier this year, local residents attended a public open house to learn more about the project and provide their feedback. City staff will continue to meet with property owners who will be most impacted by the project.

Best West Realty: Helping make the North Shore home Pat Kavanagh is the kind of fellow you want around when it comes to the emotional, exhausting, fast-paced, time sensitive and certifiably stressful world of buying and selling property. Pat, originally a financial advisor, decided to go into real estate after deciding that he wasn’t ready to kick back and relax just yet—“retirement was boring”, he says. That was six years ago now and Pat shows no signs of slowing down. Pat’s move into real estate “was a natural progression” from the financial world—mostly, “it’s about relationships, and It’s about relationships, guiding people through their and guiding people most importhrough their most tant financial important financial decisions”. decisions. He enjoys the — Pat Kavanagh, work, is pasBest West Realty Ltd sionate about helping people find homes and is content to spend his time with his co-workers and clients “life is too short to just sit around”. Best West Realty is one of two real estate offices on the North Shore and is the “pre-eminent” institution, which focuses on selling homes in North Kamloops, as well as throughout the entire city. This

part of town is booming with affordable housing for young families and first time buyers. The challenges of the current real estate market are finding an affordable home for first time buyers and the North side does provide options that get buyers climbing the real estate ladder. When it comes to buying and selling timing is everything. The average home, if priced right, can move rather quickly. Therefore, buyers and sellers need a real estate agent with expertise and speed. His role, beyond finding the best houses to meet a buyer’s preferences, needs and budget, is to act as mediator, buffer and supporter. He strives to make the experience as smooth as possible. There is an awful lot to learn about the process and those new to the home buying scene, might be intimidated. Not a problem! Pat understands those fears, concerns and general nerves, and works to educate and enlighten buyers and sellers, so that they can feel confident with their decisions. For more information, call Pat at Best West Realty Ltd at 250-554-4511, or send an email to kavanaghpat06@gmail.com. Travel numbers and more at Kamloops Airport June saw the start of forestry related activity with air tanker traffic. Kamloops Airport hosted an open house on July 10 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of 419 Squadron. 20 aircraft were on display from military to general aviation to working aircraft. Approximately 2,100 people come out for a great day. The airport was approved for a grant from the BC Air Access Program from the Province of BC to share the cost of rebuilding a portion or the main apron. That project was released to tender and Kamloops Airport await the return of bids from contractors.

Kamloops Airport has announced the traveler numbers for the month of June as compared to the same period in the previous year with a 3.5 per cent decrease in monthly travelers and an increase of 3.4 per cent in year-to-date travelers. The month of June continued a fall off of the Northern Alberta market as the economic consequences are seen from both the wildfire in Fort McMurray and the downturn in the oil and gas sector. This is expected to correct over the summer, as reconstruction demands skilled labor from outside the Northern Alberta market and Kamloops Airport should see a return of commuting workers to that region.

Testing for Alzheimer’s drugs in Kamloops Medical Arts Health Research Group CEO, Donna Benson has announced that their Kamloops Research Team has been selected as a site for studies on several new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. To better understand why Alzheimer’s occurs and develop potential treatments, scientists and researchers have found that brain tissue for someone with Alzheimer’s has far fewer nerve cells and synapses (junction between two nerve cells) than a healthy brain and plaque appears to build up between nerve cells. Plaques are formed when protein pieces called beta-amyloids get sticky and clump together. There are several avenues researchers are

taking to find a cure. “We are thrilled to be selected to be a clinical site for these important trials and to be able to bring these opportunities to the Interior. Typically patients need to be in major university centres to access this quality of care,” said Donna. “The Kamloops team consists of local doctors, along with a strong team of nurses, neuropsychology raters and research coordinators.” If you or a loved one have concerns with your memory, or have already been diagnosed with memory loss, you may want to learn more about what is involved in participating in studies. Patients benefit through access to the support of a specialized team of health care providers, who

will closely monitor your health and you may gain access to new treatments before they are widely available. Your current doctor will be kept informed and may become involved as they wish. “As in all medical studies, eligible participants will receive comprehensive studyrelated medical care, monitoring and study medication at no cost while participating and receive compensation to cover any transportation or other expenses “ said Donna. To find out if you or a loved one is eligible to participate in research studies or for further information, please call The Medical Arts Health Research Group at 1-888-736-0665 or visit the web at HealthResearch.ca.

Horse batter

On the first day of Spring Training, a baseball scout brings a horse with him to add to the starting lineup. The coach asks, “What on earth did you bring that horse here for?” The scout replies, “Wait until you see him bat.” All the players are laughing, until the horse comes to bat. At this point, the horse grabs the bat and everyone quiets down.

They stare at the horse. The pitcher, just shrugs his shoulders, and throws the ball toward home plate, when astonishingly the horse hits the ball deep into the outfield. The horse just stands there and does not move. The manager then yells at the baseball scout to tell the horse to run to first base. The scout looks back at the manager and yells back, “If he could run, he’d be in the Kentucky Derby!”

Did you know? Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish?

25 COLOUR POSTERS $11 FOR

Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Your social circle has been expanding in fun and playful ways and it’s been nice having people take care of you for a while. It’s now time to look at your bank balance and get back to work. Fun is fantastic but the office is missing you. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Emotions have you standing behind an idea your partner suggests but attraction is actually favouring your own plans. Have confidence in your final decisions. Astro-energies want Leos to shine. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’ve entered into a quiet and reflective cycle. Romantic memories and lost love fill the mind. Habits require a second look. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) The spotlight continues to call. Bosses have noticed the hard work you’ve put in and they’re ready to bestow rewards. You gain a new friend with influence. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Stick to the diet and keep going to the gym. Your goals are a little further away than anticipated but you can also see big signs of progress. Have faith and keep going. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’ve successfully crossed another hurdle and you’re ready for your next challenge. Love however isn’t a destiny or prize, it’s something that accompanies you along your journey. Lift your head out of the books and see who’s smiling your way. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) It’s back to business. The social scene is fun and it’s nice to be recognized but work is calling and it feels good to be needed there as well. Now, just because the office is calling doesn’t mean you have to immediately bury yourself in projects. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Going it alone for the last while has put a strain on your heart but love is about to say hello with a legitimate game changer. Keep your eyes open and say hello. An old flame is worth the pursuit. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) A week of work doesn’t sound like fun but it’s actually time to revise your game plan and prepare yourself for the new future. Put your dreams down on paper and make a wish. Astro-energies want you to succeed. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) A playful week is waiting for you to rally the peeps and head out for some fun. You’re in the creative and romantic spotlight and strangers are noticing your flirty mood. Say hello to something you’ve always wanted. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) As much as you’d like to get out and bask in the limelight, astro-energies are encouraging you to stay home and clean up. It may not sound like fun but the simple and stable approach is winning you favours. Joint finances continue to struggle. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) If you’ve been feeling like Mr. Invisible these days don’t fret. You’ve entered an astro-cycle of communication and generally spreading your word. Speak up and you’ll be heard. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
