Local body builder hits the big time Gillian Faith has gone through a lot of changes, but for her not a lot has changed. Following a staggering 100-pound weight loss, success with fitness and body building competitions, not to mention a growing fan base that has led to a feature in People Magazine, the 41-year old believes that she is still the same person at the heart of things—a mother of three who wanted to be actively engaged in her own life. Despite this recent burst of fame, Gillian remains humble and good humoured, “I’m still going to church, folding laundry, still taking out the garbage, sorting the recycling.” She laughs over the struggle to get her children out of bed and ready for the day. Dressed all in black, tucked away in a quiet space at her local gym, No Limits Fitness, Gillian discusses health, motherhood, media, as well as the motivations that drive her onward. Gillian shares her story on Facebook and Instagram; her honesty and frankness is heartfelt and refreshing. As far as her social media presence is concerned, Gillian is an open book; she shares the struggles alongside the successes. She refers to her own anxiety, brushes with depression, food addiction as well as her battle with anorexia and bulimia. Gillian is crystal clear as she communicates her message: it’s never too late to get started, but it takes time, 20 Years Experience Wade Kozak

and the subsequent exposure has been over ten years in the making– a “slow burn”, as Gillian calls it. Gillian was approached by People magazine in early June; an editor contacted her by email, asking whether she’d participate in their annual weight loss issue. First, she questioned the authenticity of the email and then when she realized that it was legitimate, she “just screamed”, speechlessly smacking her husband on his arm in disbelief. The editor asked her if she would be interested in submitting photographs and a questionnaire to qualify. She had to collect the information within 48 to 72 hours. Once People had received that information, there was a complication due to the matter of her weight, as her muscle mass from a recent competition made her appear ineligible for the feature. For a brief period, Gillian thought that she wouldn’t be accepted. After many conversations and emails, she was able to move forward with the shoot. Gillian was thrilled to open up that dialogue as one of her goals is to “open up a greater view of the body mass index, muscle, weight—the scale is not the be all end all”. In what was a whirlwind longweekend, she flew to New York and was taken to the Hamptons for the photo shoot. Since the issue has dropped, Gillian has - continued on page 2

Kamloops Fire Fighters Charitable Society donates Lucas 2 Machine Thanks to a generous donation by the Kamloops Fire Fighters Charitable Society, Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) now has a brand new “Lucas 2 - Chest Compression System” in place. The Fire Fighters from Engine 1 were on hand at the hospital on July 22 for a demonstration and discussion on the benefits and uses of the machine and how it has been used to save cardiac patients. The Lucas 2 is a compact, easily transportable, lightweight, safe and efficient tool that standardizes chest compressions in accordance with the latest scientific guidelines. Essentially it removes the risk of human fatigue, provides the same quality for all patients and removes any variability due to the experience level of the caregiver. “Manual chest compressions can be difficult and tiring, and

Protect yourself from scams Kamloops RCMP regularly see complaints where fraudsters pretend to be the Canada Revenue Agency and request some kind of payment or personal information. Recently there have been incidents where scammers are impersonating Immigration Officers and demanding a significant amount of payment in iTunes cards. These fraudsters will call or email telling the victim that they or their family may be deported if payment is not made immediately.
We work too hard for the money we earn. Part of that work involves remaining ever vigilant to the schemes of criminals who would have us unwittingly hand our money over to them. If you are asked to pay for any service or product with an iTunes gift card, don’t do it, it’s a scam. Know that Immigration Officers do not have the authority to deport anyone without proper authority. Report any suspected scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

MP McLeod addresses panel on Trans Mountain Expansion Project MP Cathy McLeod made the following submission on July 20 to a Federal Ministerial Panel holding consultations in Kamloops this past week on the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. Dear Panel, It’s clear that our world needs to move toward a future where clean energy is far more paramount. Until that time, we continue to rely on oil for so many aspects of our lives. Shouldn’t the oil we use be transported safely and be from conflict-free regions, like Canada? The proposed expansion to the Trans Mountain Pipeline is key to bringing Canada’s ethical oil
to Asian markets safely and efficiently. According to the federal Department of Natural Resources, Canadian pipelines had a safety rate of 99.999 per cent between 2009 and 2013, far greater than any other means of transportation. Further, most of the proposed pipeline would be constructed along the existing pipeline and other infrastructure – only 11 per cent would require a new path. Expanding the pipeline will create nearly 20,000 highquality and well-paying jobs, and provide an estimated $480 million along the route. And let’s not forget that the tax revenue from this project will fund necessary govern-
ment services, including healthcare, infrastructure, and education. Since 2012, I have been aware of the regular – and significant – community outreach by Kinder Morgan Canada regarding this proposal. The result has been dozens of benefit agreements, created with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The National Energy Board approved the expansion with 157 stringent environmental and safety conditions in May of this year. If the company is able to meet each of these to the Board’s discretion, this project would have my wholehearted support.
Officials are deeming the fifth annual Sportscheck Kamloops Marathon a success. The event, which helps raise scholarship and bursary money for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack athletic program, drew over 600 runners from throughout the world. Vancouver runners captured both Marathon titles. Ken Ginnan covered the 42-kilometer full marathon in the fastest time: two hours, 49 minutes and 52 seconds. Morgan Paulgaard (Langley, BC) was second almost ten minutes behind (2:59.43) with Fraser Bjornson (Jasper, AB) third in three hours, two minutes and 34 seconds. Kamloops’ Chris Larouche was tenth in three hours, 20:30 seconds. Rika Hatachi was the top women’s finisher in the full marathon. Her time was three hours, six minutes, 44 seconds. Yu Tsuchida (Japan) was second in three hours, eight minutes and 46 seconds with Joanna Brewer (Kamloops, BC) third in three hours, 33 minutes and 31 seconds. Josh Heinrich of Penticton, BC captured the 21-kilometer half marathon fastest in a time of 1:20:36. Andre Lessard (Kamloops, BC) was second almost five minutes behind (1:25:42) with Richard Dueck (Kelowna, BC) third 1:37:47. Former TRU WolfPack runner Ryan Pidhirniak (Kamloops, BC) was fifth in the half marathon in one hour, 28:36 minutes. Kamloops’ Jessica Moon (a South Kam grad and former university soccer player) won the women’s half marathon in a time of one hour, 33:16 minutes. Freshman dance Bloodsugar check
While visiting my 89-year-old grandfather in the hospital, a nurse came in to check his blood sugar. Before she started, the nurse examined his red fingertips that had been poked numerous times already and said, “Hmm...which finger should we use this time that won’t hurt too much?” “Yours!” my grandfather replied.
A rather awkward freshman finally got up the nerve to ask a pretty junior for a dance at the homecoming. She gave him the once-over and said, “Sorry, I won’t dance with a child.” “Please forgive me,” responded the underclassman. “I didn’t realize you were pregnant.”

Taking a break
OVERLANDERS 2015
An artist had been working on a nude portrait for a long time. Every day, he was up early and worked late, bringing perfection with every stroke of his paintbrush. As each day passed, he gained a better understanding of the female body and was able to really make his paintings shine. After a month, the artist had become very weary from this non-stop effort and decided to take it easy for the day. Since his model had already shown up, he suggested they merely have a glass of wine and talk - since normally he preferred to do his painting in silence. They talked for a few hours, getting to know each other better. Then as they were sipping their claret, the artist heard a car arriving outside. He jumped up and said, “Oh no! It’s my wife! Quick, take off your clothes!”

North Shore echo
echo stargazer Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) With both ego energies and your bank balance on the rise, it’s time to focus on love and playful adventures. Love has been a struggle recently but it’s time to shake off all of the worries and jump back into the game. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) A secret love rendezvous has your attention but the logistics might be difficult to bridge. The happiness is not necessarily an illusion but there are questions you still have to ask. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) It’s been difficult getting your point across lately as mixed messages cross with technical difficulties, but keep pressing. A group outing is calling and you’ll need your communication skills on point when a new face smiles hello. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Dress your best and put on a welcoming smile as you step into the career spotlight. You’re not only high viz professionally but you’re attracting people who want to give your career a boost. Give your destiny a chance to find you. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Love says hello from distant shores but you might be too low on both emotional and physical energy to smile back. Take a rain check and look after yourself. You deserve a break. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Problems from the beginning of the year return with the same old obstacles. This time you’re prepared with new answers and a fresh approach. Clean up unnecessary dramas so the team has a stronger chance for success. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) With a red-hot summertime affair in full swing, it’s a wonder how you find time for anything else but love. Work however has been a major thorn for 2016 with unnecessary stress and false promises. Friends encourage you to find balance. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You’re entering a cycle where you’ll be aggressively high profile in your working sphere. Yes, some people will be bumped the wrong way but its all part of the growth process as you prepare to spread your wings. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Bank balances call for a second look before rushing out for summer fun. Everything should be OK but double-check that the bills have been paid anyways. Love is favouring playful and creative gestures. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) A healthy dose of ego energy has you taking chances in love. With relationship dramas finally under control it’s time to rethink your living arrangements. Love asks if you’re ready for a new roommate. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) You’re ready to reappear on the scene with your quick wit and social charm but emotional energy just can’t keep up. Plan for unexpected adventures but leave room to recharge. Love has you talking again. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’d love to get out with your friends and enjoy the summer fun but making money is front and centre. Extra hours will be required at the office. Keep focused to avoid spinning your wheels. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
Worried kid
Two kids are talking to each other. One says, “I’m really worried. My dad works twelve hours a day to give me a nice home and good food. My mom spends the whole day cleaning and cooking for me. I’m worried sick!” The other kid says, “What have you got to worry about? Sounds to me like you’ve got it made!” The first kid says, “What if they try to escape?”
