June is seniors month With a temperate climate and sunshine almost year round it is no wonder Kamloops is one of the most desirable places to retire. June is a perfect time to remember and appreciate our elders within the community as this month is also recognized nationally as senior’s month. Like all of us, senior citizens also fare better with a strong social support network and their wisdom and experience needs to be shared. It is more difficult to share it when the ages are segregated so often in society today. With more families facing the hard choice of where the grandparents will live and busy lives so far removed from the traditional standards of generations passed, June is a time to honour the geriatric generation and thank them for the blessings of their legacy. Kamloops recognizes our veterans, the matriarchs and grandfatherly patriarchs that have contributed to the thriving community we enjoy. It was their vision and architecture that created the buildings we live and work in, the streets we drive every day and the infrastructure that is the foundation of our daily routine. Their gifts, talents and contributions are ageless regardless of years. There are a large variety of recreational programs and activities available right here in Kamloops and on the North Shore that aim to prove age is nothing but a number,

however, not all of our elderly citizens are aware of all the resources available to them. Geared towards a social, fun atmosphere and with physical activities adaptable to any fitness level and abilities, there are plenty of things to do but not everyone knows of how committed

Five year-old Sydney Humphries was one of hundreds of children who had a fun day at McDonald Park this past Saturday on the bouncy castle and many other activities. The day was in support of the Donovan family of Kamloops in their ongoing battle for their daughter Samantha, also five, who faces more treatment at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. Besides the emotional toll the family is experiencing, there are financial strains involved. To help alleviate some of this burden you can donate to Sam and her family at http://www. gofundme.com/umqx80. Inset: Sam Donovan.
12th Street reconstruction project The City of Kamloops has contracted Acres Enterprises Ltd., to begin the reconstruction of 12th Street from Tranquille Road to Lethbridge Avenue. Work is expected to commence on Monday, June 15, with an anticipated completion within October. Construction is scheduled to occur Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:30 pm, with additional night and weekend work being performed as required. Driveway access to residents and businesses may be temporarily restricted to accommodate construction so the City apologizes for any
inconvenience this may cause. Occasional partial or total road closures will be required to complete the work. Please obey all traffic control personnel and equipment when driving in the vicinity of the construction. For the duration of construction,
bus transit Route two will be rerouted along 13th Street for northbound traffic and 11th Street for southbound traffic between Tranquille Road and Halston Avenue. Residential garbage collection will not be affected. For further information, call 250-828-3461.

Appreciate seniors throughout the year – continued from page 1 but free help preparing wills and other documents. Just call to set up an appointment. Not only can our senior citizens lead active, fulfilling lives with such caring, experienced assistance from our communities, we can learn so much from their interaction with other generations within our society. Happy, healthy seniors teach us how to stay young at heart, but
more importantly, how to embrace the aging process in an inspired and authentic way. If the adage is correct that states, “You’re only as old as you feel,” then our elder community members have an opportunity to model healthy aging for the younger generations by staying involved with community programs and events. The next time you see a senior citizen look kindly on the lines of their face and see a reflection of yourself
and the experiences yet to come. Take the time to hold the door for the silver fox with his walker and know that the way you interact with senior citizens become society standard in the blink of an eye. It is our responsibility to encourage social interaction and friendship between seniors and the wider community. So much can be learned from their accomplishments and journeys and it all begins with a simple hello and a smile. Trina Budai

Tranquille corridor concept plan Open House The Tranquille Road Beautification/ Enhancement and Gateway Task Force was established by Council early in 2014. The purpose of the task force was to make recommendations to Council in regard to the beautification and enhancement of the Tranquille Gateway and to explore funding strategies and partnerships. Concerns raised included a lack of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure/ connectivity, overall street appeal, first impressions from the airport when entering the gateway into the city, safety for users along the corridor and adequate directional signage and “Welcome to Kamloops” signage. After months of reviewing design work and consulting with various groups and associations, the task force has developed a concept plan.
On Wednesday, June 17 the City will be hosting an open house at the Centre for Seniors Information in Brocklehurst Shopping Centre to share the resulting concept plan. Residents and business owners are encouraged to drop by any time between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm to view the plan. City staff and task force members will be available to answer any questions. The proposed concept plan balances continuity of the design elements along the corridor, provides a functional and aesthetically pleasing design and ensures the overall costs are kept in check. The recommended concept plan from Airport Road to Evergreen Place is estimated at $7.4 million. The concept plan is available to view online at kamloops.ca/capitalprojects/15TranquilleGateway.shtml.

Westsyde Graduates give back to kids at RIH
HIV then and now Interior Health has launched a new campaign to show how advances in HIV treatment and care have improved the lives of those living with the disease. The campaign aims to break down stereotypes that prevent people from being tested and accessing life saving treatment. Today, people receiving treatment for HIV can expect to live long, healthy lives free of symptoms. “For us to achieve an AIDS-free generation within our lifetime we need to address the stigma and fear related to HIV, says Dr. Trevor Corneil, medical health officer with Interior Health. “Stigma stops people from being tested and starting treatment.” The campaign shares the stories of two BC men including Dale from Kamloops, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2004. “My life fell apart when I was first diagnosed with HIV. I refused treatment and gave up on my life because I thought I was already dead but I was wrong,” says Dale. “Once I started treatment, everything changed. I’m healthier than I’ve ever been. I own a home and a business and have been reunited with my family. Just three pills a day are all it’s taken to transform my life.”
The Westsyde Grad Class of 2015 donated $5,000 to the Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) foundation on Wednesday, June 3 at their commencement ceremony in support of a new bed for the pediatrics department at RIH. This is the first time the Grad Class has donated proceeds from their fundraising efforts to a local charity. To celebrate their fundraising
success, a pediatric hospital bed was delivered to McArthur Island Sports Centre today where their commencement ceremony took place. The class was photographed with the bed and presented a cheque to the foundation. Students from the school also participated in designing the artwork that will be installed on the side panels of the new bed. The
theme for their art project was “bringing the outdoors inside.” The students hope the artwork will bring some comfort to children and their families who use the bed while staying at the hospital. Local Westsyde dentist, Dr. Brad Labrecque, contributed the additional funds needed to make the bed purchase possible as well as donating a second bed.

New job at the zoo
claw-ver disguise
A gorilla dies of old age at a zoo right before the zoo opens. It is the only gorilla at the zoo since they are not very profitable. However, the gorilla is their most popular attraction by far, and they cannot afford to go a day without it. So the zoo owner asks one of his workers to wear a gorilla suit they have in storage for an extra $100 a day if he will go in the gorilla cage and pretend to be the gorilla until the zoo can afford a new one. Quickly, the new “gorilla” becomes the most popular craze at the zoo. People from all over are coming to see the “Human-like” gorilla. About a month in, the craze has started to wear off. So, to get peoples attention back, he decides to climb over his enclosure and hang from the net ceiling above the lion’s den next to him. A large crowd of people gathers watching the spectacle in awe and terror. Suddenly the man loses his grip and falls to the floor of the lion’s den. The man starts screaming, “Help! Help!” Suddenly a lion pounces on him from behind and whispers in his ear, “If you don’t shut up you’re going to get us both fired.”

Heart attack on the golf course
A husband and wife are on the ninth green when the wife collapses from a heart attack. “Help me, dear!” she groans to her husband. The husband calls 911 on his cell phone, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter and lines up his putt. His wife lifts her head and says to him, “I’m dying here and you’re putting?” “Don’t worry, dear,” says the husband “they found a

Airport travel numbers level off Kamloops Airport announced the traveler numbers for the month of May with a 5.3 per cent increase in monthly travelers and year-to-date travelers saw no change in numbers. Traveler numbers have leveled off from a decline in resource workers traveling to the Northern Alberta. As with April, combined with the new Edmonton connection on WestJet Encore, May shows an increase in year over year numbers of travelers. Kamloops Airport anticipates a stronger Alberta presence in the Kamloops area this year with the low Canadian dollar. More visitors from the United States are anticipated as well due to the same Canadian dollar value.

echo stargazer Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) After a bumpy start to your birthday month communication finally clears and it feels good. Push forward in love even if it wasn’t working. Your words will charm and a simple apology or explanation goes a long way towards restoring the romantic balance. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Your past and your open enemies have been attacking and enough is enough. Pause and reflect but also keep your eyes on your future. You’re double lucky in money right now and a surprise cheque might arrive in the mail. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) The joke that didn’t work last week just might bring down the house this time around. Love is following your every move and you won’t even have to smile back! With the planets on your side, it’s up to you to choose your perfect future. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Even though the Moon is encouraging you to get out and be social, there’s a larger part of you that needs a break. Visit the gym and take it easy. Troubles from the past begin to ease. If you’re looking for love, a secret affair is waiting. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’re shining with the team and the rewards are beginning to pile up. It feels good to be recognized for a job well done. You’ve spent the last couple of months upgrading your skills. It’s now time to put your new lessons into action. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Joint finances still have your attention and you’re not entirely pleased with the way things have been going. Don’t fret and just keep going. Your natural skills and leadership qualities are more valuable than you realize. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Questions surrounding joint finances and money from the family will come into play this week. Relationships are causing drama that you wish would just fade away. Love from someone very different is waiting for a reply. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Another busy week fills your days with errands and spinning your wheels. You know good habits are the key to your success both financially and in love. The Moon has you going the extra mile for someone close and the effort will be noticed. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) A creative project gets a second wind but that doesn’t mean you should spend all of your energy resurrecting something that won’t be to your standard. Love is very strong for Aquarius right now. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) There are many different ways to show that you care. Sometimes we buy gifts, or use words and this week you’re going to be there to help out practically. Do your best to be there for someone special. Your calming presence will bring peace to a touchy situation. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Watch your words. Confusions clear and your point will be made but there’s a chance you’ll come on too strong. Children and playful activities bring financial rewards and a chance to meet someone special. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Revisit an old money making idea. It might not have worked in the past but things are different this time. Fortune is visiting your home as you continue to ground yourself for the future. Relationships on the other hand will become tense again.
