Becoming your own champion with Femsport Tami Newman has a competitive nature, but mostly, she’s competing against herself. Her third year as a Femsport participant—all she wants is to beat last year’s time. Her first year she placed 13th, her second year Tami placed sixth and now her sights are quietly set on breaking into the top five. As part of the Fit By Design Team, with Sabrina Sinclair who is also the official Femsport Trainer at the helm, Tami competed at the Women’s Strength and Fitness Challenge, which was held on Saturday, May 28 at No Limits Fitness at 905 8th Street. Tami came in third place in the Open Division, while she and her teammates won first place for Open Team. Tami also won a $2000 bursary to become a Certified Sports Nutritionist. All in all, Tami was absolutely thrilled with the results. The day was action packed, participants completing a variety of challenges, including an exhaustive Tami obstacle course Newman (that includes and the Fit an agility by Design Team. ladder, pole

bending, the vault and the “farmer’s walk” which involves lugging 45 pound gas jugs. And it all takes place within a minute or two!) Just what else goes on in one of these competitions? A whole lot of impressive exertion: tire flipping (280 or so pounds, six times—no big deal), box jumps, kettle bell and inverted rows—oh, and then you do a tire drag, lugging that bad backwards as fast RSOE - fr ear jan boy 25 2012.indd 1 as you can. “As a competitor, you can be judged as an individual or as part of a team.” The Fit By Design

team boasts 16 athletes in this year’s event. Tami loves the personal challenges that come with training but relishes in the comradely of her team. She refers to the environment as “supportive”, describing how team members cheer each other on. Tami works to find the balance to take the process seriously but not too seriously: “we’re here to have fun and work as a team”. All in all, the training and completion of Femsport provides a sense of accomplishment that, she says with a laugh, makes her feel like a “complete badass”. The Femsport competition is also about overcoming personal boundaries and fears, and finding the best version of yourself. Tami says of the experience, that it’s important to “just don’t stop, just keep trying…become your own champion!” Tami’s passion for Femsport makes one want to try their hand - continued on page 2

KAMPLAN Roadshow

Celebrate cycling

Let’s Ta!k Phase 2 of the KAMPLAN Review and Update is here! KAMPLAN: the Official Community Plan (OCP) is the guiding document for planning, future growth and land use management within the jurisdiction of the City. In Let’s Ta!k Phase 1, residents were asked to comment on their long term vision for Kamloops and what they value most. These ideas have been incorporated into a draft Community Vision and Community Values. In Phase 2, it’s now time to look at two potential land use scenarios to accommodate population growth in Kamloops over the next 20 years. The City is also seeking feedback on draft goals and policy directions under KAMPLAN’s ten topic areas: Land Use and Development; Environment; Infrastructure; Transportation; Housing; Parks, Recreation, and Open Space; Economic Development; Arts and Culture; Community Well-Being; and Health and Safety. The City will be hosting three KAMPLAN Roadshow events as part of Phase 2 of the KAMPLAN Sophia de Zeeuw, North Shore Business Improvement Association summer student, stands under the Review and Update process. Beware increased social media security risks says IT expert The report of a Newfoundland woman whose Tim Hortons’ RRRoll Up The Rim to Win prize was stolen after she posted a photo of her winning cup on Facebook is a reminder that you don’t really know who your “friends” are on social media. Ryan Smith, an online security analyst supporting Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union, is cautioning people about unwittingly sharing information on social media that can be monitored and used by cybercriminals to access secure accounts or finances. “Most people share a lot of information about themselves on social networks without fully considering the security implications or ensuring sufficient privacy settings,” says Smith. “In recent years there’s been an upward trend in cybercriminals who monitor social feeds and gain clues that lead them into people’s financial accounts.” June 1

tion, keep your social media applications and operating system current with the latest system updates on both your computer and mobile devices. Turn on automatic updates to prevent potential attacks on older software.” You’ve heard it before that strong passwords are critical, but creating and then remembering combinations of random words, numbers and symbols is a pain. Smith suggests trying a phrase instead. “You can use spaces on most social applications, so use a phrase featuring some numbers and special characters, like “My

d@g is 5!”, which would be very secure. Also consider using password management software and apps to help you manage all your passwords.” Last but not least, set up mobile alerts on all your financial accounts and access alert notifications on your social profiles. These features will give you the chance to shut down any suspect activity before it’s too late. “Nothing is foolproof, but being proactive about your online security will thwart cybercriminals and drastically reduce your likelihood of getting attacked.”

In fact, criminals may monitor your accounts for a year or more before they take any action and you won’t know they’re doing it, says Smith. And, a lot of information can be shared in 12 months. “A common way cybercriminals break into your financial accounts is by mining your social media profiles for the answers to your ‘Forgot your password?’ question,” says Smith. “Could someone find out your dog’s name, your mother’s maiden name or the city you were born in from the content of your social media activity?” Moreover, your actual website account passwords are usually made up of many of these details. “It goes without saying, but also ensure your privacy settings are set to the highest possible security options,” he says. “Sites like Facebook allow you to limit access to defined groups such as family or co-workers. unfortunate coincidence?

Welcome Home The North Shore of Kamloops is a vibrant community. Whether you grew up here, work here, or play here; people love it here. We are the North Shore.

While creating husbands, God promised women that good and ideal husbands would be found in all corners of the world. And then he made the world round.

Swim fast

Once there was a millionaire who had a collection of live alligators. He kept them in a pool at the back of his mansion. The millionaire also had a beautiful daughter who was single. One day, he decided to throw a huge party. During the party he announces, “My dear guests, I have a proposition to every man here. I will give one million dollars or my daughter to the man who can swim across this pool full of alligators and emerge unharmed!” As soon as he finishes his last word, there is the sound of a large splash.

‘‘

The guests all turn to see a man in the pool swimming as fast as he can. They cheer him on as he keeps stroking. Finally, the swimming man makes it to the other side unharmed. The millionaire is so impressed, he says, “My boy, that was incredible! Fantastic! I didn’t think it could be done! Well, I must keep my end of the bargain. Which do you want, my daughter or the one million dollars?” The man says, “Listen, I don’t want your money. I don’t want your daughter, either. I want the person who pushed me in that water!”

I love the North Shore so it made sense to open my business here. I have been waxing for 13 years and in business for myself for 5 years. If you can name it, we can wax it.

And so it went that he needed keys to doors of emerald, pearl and diamond. Finally, they come to a door made of solid gold. The sound has become very clear and definite. The monks say, “This is the last key to the last door.” The man is apprehensive to no end. His life’s wish is behind that door! With trembling hands, he unlocks the door, turns the knob and slowly pushes the door open. Falling to his knees, he is utterly amazed to discover the source of that haunting and seductive sound... But, of course, I can’t tell you what it is because you’re not a monk.

echo stargazer Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Love stops in to say hello but will you notice? Thoughts are still on the past and what could have been. Watch for accidents during routine trips as the pace heats up. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) That secret affair heats up and you’re willing to go more than half way to make it work. Remember your boundaries but take the chance. A creative project gathers steam. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You may be in a creative funk but love wants you to get out and play. Fortune currently favours publicity so make sure you can be seen. An award is waiting for work you’ve already done. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) There’s a push/pull between your home and public life and the energy is pushing right into your personal identity. This time you’ll need more than a new haircut to balance the emotional overload. Some yoga and meditation should restore your inner peace.

Special Olympics Kamloops and actors & alumni from the TRU theatre program invite you to an original murder mystery dining experience!

Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Money troubles return with less drama but a bigger bite. It’s a great opportunity to revisit financial plans that hit a snag and to see how best to move everything forward. Home life signals time for a change. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Put your peeps to work. Both love and money succeed through group efforts so make sure you involve as many people as possible in that big project you have planned. Watch your health. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Even off you haven’t been overly grumpy lately, someone was rubbed the wrong way and they developed a grudge. Make peace but don’t give in too much. You’ve already moved on and this is just making peace with decisions. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) The smallest changes in your appearance or personal style will have a dramatic spill over into other areas of your life. Behind the scenes drama is put on hold for a while and it’s time to get back into the social circuit. Say hello to friends from overseas. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re high profile and aggressive but where’s the fight? You’ll revisit work decisions from January and quickly realize that the easy way led you astray. It’s not too late to follow your heart. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Home and family have a great chance to bring unexpected rewards. If you’re moving, renovating or simply adding a little colour to the nest don’t worry about the cost. Hidden assets to pop up to make this dream come true.

GIVE THE GIFT o ART STRAIGHT FROM YOUR HEART

Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Joint finances reignite a friction you’d rather leave in the past. Put efforts into yourself and reach high. Love is waiting for a coffee date.

This Father’s Day find a gift as fantastic as your Father

Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Mars backs into your astrosector of personal relationships and stirs up a conflict you thought was over. Don’t avoid the argument just because it’s easier. The air has to be cleared before moving on.
