This new Get Happy event is focused on families, friends and children. The two and five kilometer runs stay within McArthur Island while the ten kilometer runners head off the island onto the Rivers Trail to Brocklehurst and back. Race times are not as important as filling your day with great memories and laughter. All runners and their families are encouraged to begin Canada Day with a morning run as happiness and fresh air are a great way to start the day before taking in Art in the Park and the great live music at Riverside Park. Since 1999 Jo Berry and the coaches at Run Club have been assisting Kamloops runners in making positive changes to achieve their goals creating an energetic environment that promotes the shared beliefs of inclusion, congruency and a balance of both mental and physical health. Incubating a vision
Big winner
At the Fortune Drive Safeway, Robyn Doerksen was the lucky Grand Prize Winner of an amazing 100,000 Air Miles as part of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Safeway in-store campaign to help create a future without breast cancer. Across western Canada, Safeway raised an incredible $891,293 and encouraged Canadians to eat well and help reduce the risk of breast cancer. Customers were invited to make a donation of $2 to support this important cause and in turn be automatically entered to win 100,000 Air Miles Reward Miles.
The City of Kamloops is partnering with Community Futures Thompson Country to present a workshop on a Farm Business Incubator opportunity for Kamloops. This first step toward the implementation of the City’s Agriculture Area Plan, adopted by City Council in 2013, aims to flesh out demand for a Farm Business Incubator within Kamloops and the surrounding region. The program, if developed, will provide the tools and resources aspiring agricultural entrepreneurs need to develop and manage viable farm enterprises in Kamloops. The Incubator reduces the traditional barriers to success for new farm businesses by providing access to land, housing, shared equipment, infrastructure, low-interest capital, business mentoring and training in advanced practical skills. Launching farm-based businesses in the supportive, low-risk environment of the Incubator greatly increases the likelihood of business viability and success. The workshop begins at 9:00 am on Wednesday, June 24 at the Parkside Lounge in the Interior Savings Centre.
Coalition crowdfunding a success A coalition of community groups connected to the crowdfunding appeal regarding the proposed Ajax mine has surpassed the original target of $25,000. After a 30-day campaign, the appeal raised $31,350 on the “Indiegogo” crowdfunding site. Additional donations by cheque, which are still coming in, have increased the tally to $35,358, a number that continues to rise. “We are so very grateful to each of the hundreds of donors who made the campaign such a success. People responded quickly and generously to our struggle to defend the health and well being of the citizens of Kamloops,” stated coalition spokesperson Dianne Kerr. Funds raised will go toward the hiring of independent experts to critique the Ajax application. These experts will be looking to identify key deficiencies that
continue to pose risks to public health and safety. “The process to this point has heavily favoured the proponent. The federal government has refused to conduct a full independent panel review, the provincial government has refused to give an independent health impact assessment and citizens have been denied the opportunity for a public forum to cross examine mine information. Our hired experts will provide some of the independent scrutiny of data provided by the proponent,” stated Dianne. The application for the proposed Ajax mine is expected to be submitted by the proponent in early Fall. “We will need to see the application information requirements as well as the formal application before definitive choices can be made regarding the experts we hire.” In the meanwhile, the coalition
will establish a preliminary budget to ensure funds are wisely spent. The coalition views the campaign as a great success on many levels. “The crowdfunding efforts helped us get our message out to the world,” stated Dianne. “The site received visits from 83 countries and more than 3300 individual visits.”
Comments received from Timmins and Salt Lake City, regions well known for heavy mining activity, were clear pleased to stop the Ajax mine before it is too late. Media contact for the Coalition of Concerned Community Groups, Dianne Kerr can be reached at 250374-1335 or by email at d.m.kerr@ telus.net.
RCMP warn of Revenue Canada scam
Kamloops RCMP continues to receive calls from the public about a phone scam where the caller claims to be from Revenue Canada. In the most recent incident, the caller tried to tell the victim that they were in arrears with their taxes and they owed $1900. Fortunately the recipient of this call was very savvy and knew that they did not owe any taxes, therefore they did not arrange any transaction with the caller. However, the person on the phone became quite persistent and hostile and even called back a second time. The person on the phone also stated that they needed to collect the tax payment in person, in cash, which was obviously a red flag that this was not legitimate. Police are reminding the public to verify any calls where they are asked to make payments, before conducting transactions. Police were unable to trace the source of the call in this incident.

Strike halts recyclables collection The City of Kamloops’ contractor for processing recyclables, Emterra Environmental, is currently experiencing a labour dispute resulting in a strike, effective Monday, June 22. The City is not equipped to store recyclables in a safe and environmentally sound manner, which requires a secure area to avoid wind distribution of paper and other materials onto neighbouring properties or waterways. The City will be ceasing to pick up recycling effective immediately and until further notice. This includes single-family homes, multi-family homes, and cardboard from some businesses, as well as the City’s four recycling depots (located on McGill Road, Ord Road and at the Mission Flats and Barnhartvale Landfills). Residents are asked to store their recyclables on their property if possible.
Alternatively, recycling can be taken to the following Multi-Material BC recycling locations, however, all materials must be separated and sorted prior to drop off (i.e. paper, plastic, foam, glass, etc.): Lorne Street Bottle Depot, 270 Halston Avenue; General Grant’s Recycling Centers, 611 Fortune Drive or 963 Camosun Crescent. The City hopes that the labour dispute between Emterra Environmental and United Steelworkers Local 1-417 will be resolved quickly. Regular garbage collection will not be affected and will continue as per usual, and the City landfills remain open. For regular updates, please check www.kamloops.ca. For further information on Multi-Material BC Recycling visit their website at recyclinginbc.ca/.

Dear Editor, When it comes to accidents, it’s common to think it will never happen to us. That is what we thought until our sixyear-old son, Roan, a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, lost his leg in a lawn mower accident. A few years ago, Roan was riding on a lawn mower with an adult when he fell off and severed his left leg at the knee. As he was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital, we wondered if we were going to see him again. With lawn cutting season here, we want to help spread Roan’s message across the country that kids should never be around a lawn mower. It doesn’t matter how good you are with machinery, it just takes a moment for a life changing accident to happen. Today, Roan is an active and energetic child thanks to help from The War Amps with financial assistance for artificial limbs, regional seminars and peer support. We just hope that his story will prevent even one child from being injured. If you would like to learn more about how to encourage children to play safely, please visit waramps.ca. ~Jolene and Neil Heck
The North Shore has what you need this summer The beautiful North Shore is about to become even more visually appealing: 12th Street construction has begun! We’re very excited about the construction happening on 12th street between Tranquille Road and Lethbridge Avenue and the improvements that it will be making to the area and commuter traffic flow. Traffic calming extensions will be increasing safety for kids on their route to school, bus stops will be enhanced with concrete pads and improved lighting will benefit pedestrians and drivers alike! While these enhancements are being made, it’s a great time to visit some of the wonderful businesses in the area. With scorching hot weather approaching us quickly, pool owners will soon be able to cool off and relax in their backyard oasis. Pool Boyz knows the value of a clean, maintained swimming pool and they are more than happy
to do all of your pool duties from building, cleaning, to repairs. Visit Pool Boyz on 12th Street and when you purchase opening and closing packages together you will receive ten per cent off! Now that you’re in the backyard you might as well do some gardening! B and L Small Motors is a family-owned and operated business that has been serving Kamloops’ garden and landscaping equipment needs for over 20 years. Give your lawnmower some TLC and bring it to B and L Small Motors for any parts or equipment repairs! After that long day of fun and sun, you’ll definitely be hungry. Why not satisfy your taste buds with some juicy jerk chicken at Jam-Can Café! Authentic Jamai-
can cuisine and tasty twists on classic Canadian dishes are what make Jam-Can such a unique and inspiring place to eat. You won’t be able to resist their sweet coconut butter Johnnycake! With so many amazing businesses like these ones it’s no wonder why so many people shop on the North Shore. Shop, stay and play on the North Shore – because when you do, you’re investing in your community, promoting your neighbours and giving us all the more reason to chant “We are the North Shore!” with pride. Travel numbers level off Kamloops Airport announced the traveler numbers for the month of May with a 5.3 per cent increase in monthly travelers and year-to-date travelers saw no change in numbers. Traveler numbers have leveled off from a decline in resource workers traveling to the Northern Alberta. As with April, combined with the new Edmonton connection on WestJet Encore, May shows an increase in year over year numbers
of travelers. Kamloops Airport anticipates a stronger Alberta presence in the Kamloops area this year with the low Canadian dollar. More visitors from the United States are anticipated as well due to the same Canadian dollar value. Kamloops Airport continues to see growth in movements that are attributed to increased cargo and courier activity related to the increased number of local courier companies. These numbers also reflect an earlier than normal forestry wildfire season.

Register now for summer school classes Kamloops Thompson secondary school students in grades eight through twelve may now register for summer school courses, delivered face to face and by distance learning, in a variety of subjects. School District 73 will offer summer school courses at NorKam Secondary from Monday, June 29 to Thursday, July 23 with options for remedial course credits and full credits in english, social studies, math, science and communications. New this year, at Kamloops Open Online Learning (KOOL)

Remedial course offerings are a total of 40 hours each and are for students who achieved at least 40 per cent in a course during the school year. Students who are suc-
Teen parties causing problems The gathering of teens, partying in city parks, has resulted in numerous calls to the Kamloops RCMP from neighboring residents. Police will be attending these gathering and issuing violation tickets to those who are found contravening the Liquor Control and Licensing Act or City of Kamloops By-laws. The fine for a minor in possession of liquor or consuming liquor is $230 and the by-law fine for being in a park between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am is $100. RCMP need to have their resources available for true emergencies and not be tied to managing groups of youth partying on busy Friday and Saturday nights. Any of the youth dealt with by police will have their parents contacted to come and take responsibility for them, regardless of the time.
cessful in meeting requirements of the remedial course will receive a C grade. Students who achieved less than 40 per cent are able to repeat the full course for credit, which is a total of 80 hours. Additionally, students who received 40 per cent or higher, but want to achieve a higher letter grade than C, may also take a full-credit course. Summer school offerings are not intended for students who have not previously
taken the course. Registrations for summer school will be accepted until Monday, June 29. A full list of courses and a registration link is available on the School District’s website at www. sd73.bc.ca. Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality has been awarded an age friendly BC recognition designation from the provincial government for its support of seniors to remain safe, active and independent. Sun Peaks has committed to making the community age friendly by supporting seniors and people of all abilities in the community by providing amenities to facilitate walking and skiing around the village. “Promoting fitness among seniors is vital and Sun Peaks has set a great example for other communities,” said Terry Lake, Minister of Health and MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson. “Its commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and health conscious community aligns with our government’s principle of encouraging seniors to stay active and socially connected.” Sun Peaks is one of eleven BC communities being recognized this week and will receive a let-
ter of congratulations, a recognition award poster, along with $1,000 to create a legacy project or a celebration. The program is a partnership between the BC Healthy Communities Society and the Ministry of Health and is part of the Age friendly BC strategy. To date, 36 BC communities have received recognition. To achieve this, four key steps must be taken. These include establishing an age friendly advisory or steering committee, passing a council or district board resolution, conducting an assessment, and developing and publishing an action plan. Sun Peaks and the other ten recognized communities will continue implementing plans and projects. For a complete list of age friendly recognized communities and to learn more about how communities can receive recognition check the website at www.gov.bc.ca/agefriendly/ recognition.

Have your solar garden lights lost their ability to shine? A quick trick to illuminating your yard once more is to simply apply a clear coat of nail polish to the plastic covered solar cells on your solar lights. The panels remain clear and able to recharge with the UV light!
