She refers to Adrian as a truly supportive force in her life and the feeling is mutual amongst the other students. All in all, the salon atmosphere made for a most unique senior year: “I wouldn’t have wanted to spend Grade 12 any other way”. Now, while others are deciding on figuring out career paths, Jane says this program has boosted her confidence and given her direction, having a career locked down is “one less thing to worry about”. Her favourite thing to do in the salon? Jane loves to experiment with vibrant colours, especially on herself. She describes herself as “fortunate” as she refers to her supportive family as her “guinea pigs” when it comes to practicing the craft. Now that her exam is over and the course is completed, Jane is ready for the next chapter…and it promises to be very colourful. Diabetes connection: How to keep your skin safe this summer The new national guidelines on practicing safe sun has changed. It’s been 20 years since dermatologists and cancer groups have agreed to a single set of rules. There are a few key changes that I would like to talk about. The first thing we should know is that in Canada the sun is strong enough to cause skin cancer. Skin cancer, which is also called melanoma, is on the rise. 1) Check the day’s UV index. We should know when to avoid the sun. Precaution needs to be taken especially if the index is 3 or higher. The timeframe used

Potential mail strike could affect paying property taxes With the looming threat of a postal labour dispute, the City of Kamloops is warning the public to take precautions with their property tax payments and Home Owner grant applications. Canada Post could potentially cease delivery as early as July 2 and Kamloops property taxes are due on July 4. A Canada Post post-mark is not considered proof of on-time payment. COMMUNITY
On June 15, at Kamloops Immigrant Services (KIS) Annual General Meeting, Paul Lagacé presented the brick plaque to Mary Desaulniers from the City of Kamloops Social Planning Council. Kamloops Immigrant Services is a member of the City of Kamloops Diversity Advisory Committee. The support of KIS operational needs by the City of Kamloops Social Planning Council $5000 grant comes in a particularly challenging time. The arrival of Syrian newcomers created a set of operational demands that funding doesn’t always support. As a non-profit, Kamloops Immigrant Services relies on various sources to fund their activities. The wall brick plaques are intended to share their gratitude in a public way for those important contributions.
The North Shore Policing Office is pleased to now offer civilian fingerprinting services. Starting the week of June 27th, fingerprinting services will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Charges for fingerprinting are as follows: Municipal Fingerprinting Fee (excludes volunteers): $40.00 (as per By-law 44-4) and Federal Fingerprinting Fee (excludes volunteers): $25.00. There are 26 different types of applications that may require fingerprinting, including Police Information Checks, Police Information Checks with Vulnerable Sector Screening, Adoption, Canadian Citizenship, Types of employment, Name Change, Landed Immigrant Status and Privacy Act Requests. For more information about fingerprinting and/or the associated fees please contact the North Shore Community Policing Office at 250-376-5099. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and is located centrally on the North Shore at 915 – 7th Street in the old Kamloops Kia building.

Welcome to the Moose Lodge! After being greeted at the door with a giant hug by Moose Lodge administrator Jack Buchanan, and received warmly by the other Moose Lodge members, one can really feel welcome at this establishment. The Moose Lodge has been in Kamloops since 1925 and at the North Shore Community Centre since 2008. They happily “work hand in hand” with the North Shore Community Centre and enjoy a great relationship with the facility. The Moose Lodge location is a rarity; there are not many seniors’ facilities that boast an on-site establishment with a liquor license! A number of Cottonwood Manor residents are Moose members and are known to enjoy a cold beer and a game of darts or watch a game on the big television screen. A reminiscence of the old Lodge on Fortune Drive makes one want to fire up a time machine to gain access to the rocking steak dinners and dance parties. Buckley Lord, treasurer, has been a member since 1965 and had worked alongside Jack to transition from their Fortune Drive to their space in the North Shore Community Centre. The process was painstaking, and took over a year to make all the appropriate arrangements but was well worth their efforts. The Moose Lodge takes a great deal of pride in their charity efforts, Jack smiles, “I’m here for the community work…and the people”. Meat Draws are a regular fundraising feature. The draws run Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and the prizes are provided by Highland Val-

ley Meats. They also offer 50/50 draws with all proceeds benefiting local organizations and families. The Moose Lodge has donated to Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops Hospice Association, Kamloops Food Bank, Salvation Army, Canadian Cancer Society, Basics for Babies, just to name a few. Ultimately, while it’s an honour to donate to these groups, it’s especially rewarding to provide support to individual families. The Moose Lodge has offered funding to members and applicants for funerals, surgeries and dental work. Dave Moonen, governor, recalled his favourite moment as a fundraiser, bringing a little girl on stage to help present a cheque. Blain Eye, Moose member, is a valued volunteer; though he downplayed all that he does for the facility, the other gentlemen

Kamloops RCMP to patrol on foot, bike and boat
Recycling done right
The police are getting out of their patrol cars and hitting the streets, parks and water this summer to conduct foot, bike and boat patrols. Uniformed officers will be deployed on foot patrols to the downtown area, the North Shore and various parks during peak periods of calls for service for the summer. Typically, officers doing foot patrols address concerns such as disturbances, panhandling, open liquor, drug use and mischief. There are also intermittent bike patrols planned. Officers on bikes are very effective at going to places not easily accessible by car. The bike patrol is a valuable
tool, enabling officers to respond rapidly, effectively and often unexpectantly on suspicious persons and activities. The RCMP boat will also be conducting patrols on their boat this summer. They will be checking water vessels for proof of competency, life jackets, safety gear and impaired operators. All officers, whether on foot, bike or boat, will be proactive in their approach to any problems they encounter. “These various patrols are another way that Kamloops RCMP is working to keep our streets and communities safe,” stated Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.
Making the rounds
Some people are just so darn creative! These Minions planters made from tires caught our crackerjack reporters eye while driving by McDonald Park recently.
While making the rounds, Dr. Owens points out an X-Ray to a group of medical students. “As you can see,” he says, “the patient limps because his left fibula and tibia are radically arched. Aman Preet, what would you do in a case like this?” Preet pondered for a second and answered, “I guess I’d limp, too.”
Happy Canada Day!

But where’s my husband?” “That’s what I’m here to be tellin’ ya, Brenda. There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery…” “Oh no!” cries Brenda, “Please don’t tell me…”
“I must, Brenda. Your husband Seamus is dead and gone. I’m sorry.” Finally, she looked up at Tim. “How did it happen, Tim?” “It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned.” “Oh my dear!” But you must tell me true, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?” “Well, Brenda…no” “No?” “Fact is, he got out three times to pee.”

Case of the missing cow A big city lawyer was called in on a case between a farmer and a large railroad company. The farmer noticed that his prize cow was missing from the field through which the railroad passed. He filed suit against the railroad company for the value of the cow. The case was to be tried before the Justice of the Peace in the back room of the general store. The attorney immediately cornered the farmer and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job and the farmer finally agreed to take half of what he was claiming to settle the case. After

the farmer signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn’t help but gloat a little over his success. He said to the farmer, “You know, I hate to tell you this but I put one over on you in there. I couldn’t have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your farm that morning. I didn’t have one witness to put on the stand.” The old farmer replied, “Well, I’ll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself because that darned cow came home this morning!”

This is your captain speaking About 90 fifth-graders piled into the airliner I was flying, on their way home from a school trip. Once we were in the air and the crew began serving drinks, I could hear them pleading with the children to settle down and let the other passengers get some sleep. No amount of reasoning seemed to help, until I thought of the solution that actually worked. I picked up the PA mike in the cockpit and announced, “Children, this is the captain speaking. Don’t make me stop this airplane and come back there!”
