Property owners who support the establishment of a fire protection service and borrowing up to $470,00 for construction of a fire hall and purchase of equipment have until noon on Tuesday, June 30

to submit their completed petitions to the TNRD. Property owners within the proposed service area who have not yet received their petition are encouraged to contact the TNRD as soon as possible. Outbreak of Salmonella infections related to contact with live baby poultry

Increased tuition rates proposed

Several of these cases occurred in the Interior Health region. Anyone who has contact with live poultry or has eggs from hobby farms, non-commercial organic farms and backyard flocks are advised to take precautions to protect their health. Members of the public who have acquired poultry from a hatchery in Alberta, and are concerned they may be affected by this outbreak, should contact their supplier or their local Health Protection Unit for more information.

On Friday, May 29 the TRU board of governors will discuss a motion to impose a $1600 per semester tuition fee on all Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second or Additional Language (ESAL) programs. Â The increases would take effect in the Fall 2015 semester. Â These programs, which provide students with employment, learning and language skills, and remedial courses necessary for access to further post-education at TRU, have been tuition-free since 2008.

Interior Health is collaborating with the BC Centre for Disease Control, BC health authorities, BC Ministry of Agriculture, Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial partners to investigate an outbreak of salmonellosis in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The cases of human illness are related to contact with live baby poultry originating from a hatchery in Alberta. To date, there have been thirteen cases of salmonella infection and two hospitalizations in B.C. connected to this outbreak.

Kamloops’ famous weed-eating goats return After successful application of the program over the last three years, the City of Kamloops has brought back Rocky Ridge Vegetation Control to use goats for controlling weeds as part of the city’s invasive plant management program. The use of goats is not a not a one-time treatment; generally several years are required for significantly reducing infestations. We have found a reduction of weeds in the areas where the goats have been used over the last few years. Goats can also be used on sites where mechanical and chemical methods are not feasible due to topography, size, or sensitive nature. A prime example of this is the use of goats around the Dallas/Barnhartvale nature park wetlands, and the Pineview Valley wetlands, where they were introduced last year to help control thistle and other noxious weeds in the riparian areas. Conrad and Donna Lindblom will use their herd of 450 goats, consisting of

Boer-saanen, Spanish, Nubian and Kiko goats, to target Dalmation Toadflax, leafy spurge and various invasive species in Kenna Cartwright Park. They use their highly trained herders, dogs and horses to manage their goat herds. The goats are ideal to use as noxious weed seeds are not viable once the seed has passed through their digestive system. In addition, what they are consuming is not an issue for wildlife since the goats are targeting species that other animals will not eat and they move on once the weeds are consumed. Want to come out and see the goats? Rocky Ridge Vegetation Control will be at Kenna Cartwright Park from May 19 until the beginning of June, and then will be headed out to Dallas/Barnhartvale Nature Park for a week. Please note that all park users with dogs must keep them on a leash in target areas during this time.

After many months of work the new Kamloops Kia location is open for business at 880 – 8th street. It was all hands on deck this past weekend to get the new site ready to go. Steve and Ladonne Davidson (owners) are thrilled with the larger lot which is easily double the size and the showroom is a good 3 times bigger. Kamloops Kia prides itself on being a family owned business and you can tell when you come in and talk to the staff. Kia has a huge selection of both new and pre-owned units and if they don’t have what you are looking for they will find it for you even if its not a Kia. Come on by and take a look.

All the world’s a stage Three arts and culture groups in Kamloops are receiving $60,000 from the province’s Community Gaming Grants program. They are: Project X Theatre Productions Society at $35,000 for the X-Fest Outdoor Summer Theatre Program; Kamloops Arts Council at $15,000 for the KAC’s Performing Arts Program, Visual Arts Exhibitions Program and Workshops Series Program; and the British Columbia Living Arts Society at $10,000 for artistic performance events in 2015to 2016. “From theatre to music to visual arts, Kamloops is home to a vibrant arts and culture community and our government is proud to support it,” KamloopsNorth Thompson MLA Terry Lake said. “By providing access to high-quality performances and exhibitions, these organizations make our city an even more dynamic and exciting place to live.” “Arts and culture groups like these help bring communities to life,” KamloopsSouth Thompson MLA Todd Stone said. “Kamloops is fortunate to have a thriving arts and culture scene which

puts on many events throughout the year. They allow families and individuals to come together as a community and enjoy life in Kamloops.” “The ongoing support Project X Theatre has received from the Community Gaming Grants program has been an integral part of our summer outdoor theatre festival, X Fest, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year,” said Heather Cant, co-artistic producer of Project X Theatre. “Not only is this funding essential to allowing this family festival to continue, it also allows us to provide subsidized ticket programs so cost needn’t be a barrier for young people and their families to embrace the arts.” Every year, the provincial government approves $135 million in gaming grants that benefit more than 5,000 local non-profit organizations that serve communities throughout British Columbia. Organizations interested in applying for Community Gaming Grants can find information and applications at pssg.gov.bc.ca/gaming.

RCMP warn of social media scams The RCMP is reminding the public to be aware of online scams that utilize social media. On May 20 a senior citizen was contacted through social media, advising she had won a large sum of money. She only needed to wire $300 in order to claim the winnings. Unfortunately, in this incident the senior citizen did wire the money, but then became suspicious when the person requested further funds. The victim in this incident advised that it was very believable, as the culprit used a friends list on social media during their interactions.

New strategy supports Aboriginal health and wellness Improved mental wellness, better access, increased collaboration, and building cultural competence are goals outlined in the new aboriginal health and wellness strategy, approved by Interior Health’s board of directors. “We’ve seen great progress in our work to support innovative, culturally appropriate patient-centered care that meets the needs of First Nations and Aboriginal peoples across the province,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “Interior Health’s strategy is an example of this collaborative work and will help set a path to further enhance the health and wellness of Aboriginal people in this region.” The document sets the path for Interior Health to work with First Nations and Métis partners on improving health outcomes for the approximately 50,000 Aboriginal people living within the Interior Health region. “Everyone has unique health needs but, as this document points out, the needs of the Aboriginal population within Interior Health

are markedly different than the rest of our population,” said Interior Health Board Chair Erwin Malzer. “We have a responsibility to ensure equal access and appropriate health services.” For example, individuals of Aboriginal ancestry have higher rates of mental illness than the general population (approximately sixteen per cent compared to eight per cent) while they have lower rates of cardiovascular disease (approximately six per cent compared to thirteen per cent). The document follows the principle that health care touches people at all stages of life including: staying healthy, getting better, living with illness and coping with end of life. Services provided at these various stages must all meet Aboriginal people’s needs. The four priority areas identified in the strategy are: advancement of cultural competency within Interior Health; ensuring meaningful participation of the Aboriginal population in health care planning and decision making; improving health equity; and improving mental wellness for Aboriginal people.

Point of view - landscapes of BC

“Cinnamon Ridge” by Darryl Nelson

A new exhibit of oil paintings by Darryl Nelson will be on display at the Kamloops Arts Council Main Gallery, Old Courthouse Cultural Centre, from June 4 to 24. “My work reflects an appreciation of the natural diversity of our province,” says Darryl. “I have experienced what being in the outdoors can do for one’s spirit, and I strive to find strong compositions that will draw the viewer in and create a feeling of connection to the landscape. I like to paint a diverse selection of scenes, as there are

just so many possibilities for great paintings everywhere I look! It is important to me to capture the details that make each tree, hill and cloud unique. It is like a portrait where the individual features give it life and meaning. I hope my work inspires others to appreciate and protect this great land we live in for future generations.” The Kamloops Arts Council’s Main Gallery is open to the public and located in the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre at 7 Seymour Street West. The gallery is open five days a week with hours of 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday. Admission by donation is encouraged, although all are welcome to visit and appreciate this local gem.

The best friend The grandma

A man is sitting at the bar in his local tavern, furiously imbibing shots of whiskey. One of his friends happens to come into the bar and sees him. “Lou,” says the shocked friend, “what are you doing? I’ve known you for over fifteen years, and I’ve never seen you take a drink before. What’s going on?” Without even taking his eyes off his newly filled shot glass, the man replies, “My wife just ran off with my best friend.” He then throws back another shot of whisky in one gulp. “But,” says the other man, “I’m your best friend!” The man turns to his friend, looks at him through bloodshot eyes, smiles, and then slurs, “Not anymore!”

“Hi! My name is Gertrude,” said the lady next to the man on the plane. “It’s so nice to meet you! I’m flying to my grandson’s birthday. I’m so excited! I remember when he was just a little thumbkin and now he’s three! He’s the most adorable thing ever! You know what? Hold on, I think I have a picture. Let me look..., yes, here it is, just look at him, isn’t he adorable? I could stare at his picture all day. Oh my, and you should hear him on the phone! He says to me in the cutest voice, “Hi Grandma!” It just gets me all teary eyed.” After what seemed like an eternity for the poor man sitting next to her, Gertrude seemed to realize that she was talking too much. “You know, I feel terrible! Here I am just talking away without letting you get in a word edgewise! Tell me…what do you think about my Grandson!”

He performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt. Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his

from his body and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay. Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says, “What the world are ya doing, Billy Bob?” “Good grief, Cletus, ya scared the bejeebers out of me,” says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob. “But me ‘n the wife been havin’trouble lately in the bedroom department and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor.”

Water quality centre celebrates 10 years The Kamloops Centre for Water Quality is a state of the art facility that has been in full operation since 2005. This is one of Canada’s largest membrane water treatment plants and is capable of supplying up to 160 million liters of clean drinking water daily to its citizens, regardless of the turbidity in the raw river. Every liter of water produced has exceeded and will continue to exceed drinking water standards. Since it first came into operation, there has been numerous process improvements and efficiency that

have rendered this facility a leader in the water treatment in industry, including the diversion of over 15 million lbs of residual waste from the landfill. The Kamloops Centre for Water Quality marked their 10 anniversary with a special event recognizing key contributors over the years, including Thompson Rivers University, General Electric, Interior Health Authority, Urban Systems and Stantec, and well as past City of Kamloops employees who were integral to the development of this facility.

Government invests in Kamloops Airport MP Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and for Western Economic Diversification, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, recently announced that the Government of Canada is investing $4,401,747 to enhance safety at the Kamloops Airport. Funding will pay for the rehabilitation of pavement on Runway 08-26 and the replacement of two runway sweepers. This work and equipment will allow for timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways, ensuring continued safe operations for flight crews, passengers, employees, and aerial firefighting services. Funding is provided through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP). “The City of Kamloops appreciates the huge level of support Transport Canada has shown the Kamloops Airport. The runway rehabilitation project is a significant capital project that would have been difficult to complete without its contribution. This funding means that airport improvement fees will not increase, allowing the airport to keep costs down for travellers.” said Mayor Peter Milobar.

echo stargazer Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Happy birthday! You’ve been waiting for something to move on the relationship front and patience is wearing thin. Logic takes a back seat as an emotional outburst signals time for a new type of love to bloom. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’ve been thinking about a change in lifestyle that gets your health back on track. A little time at the gym will do wonders. You’re still attracting smiles wherever you go so pump up that inner strength and say hello. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Friends continue to confuse and leave you wondering what’s going on but one person has caught your attention and you like it. Do your best to bridge the gap and say hello. They’re just as impressed with you as you are with them. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Luck is still flowing behind the scenes in secret affairs and relationships. If someone tries to sneak something past you, they’ll be caught. Take the high road and simply do your best to be your best. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Lately you’ve wanted to be anywhere and do anything other than what you feel is a dull and ordinary life. This week the daydreaming catches up. An important document will arrive in the mail shortly and with it comes a bit of the freedom that you’ve been looking for. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Joint projects might still work out so don’t completely throw in the towel but if you want to make things succeed then you’re going to have to say something. Don’t wait until it all boils over into an emotional mess. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re craving the spotlight in love and you’re willing to fight to get it. You’re in a love cycle so your partner might shine the attention you’ve been wanting. Although you’re our most direct sign, a subtle reminder is all it will take. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Love is coming from your partner but this week you need some alone time. You’re not fed up with anyone, just drained. Rest and recharge those batteries. If none of that helps then a jog by yourself should clear the emotional cobwebs. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re more important to your friends than you may have realized. Did you know they count on you for emotional inspiration and levelheaded answers? Spend some time with the team and let the past fade into a distant memory. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Time to put your best foot forward and shine! You may want to spend time at home but both the planets and the office have other ideas. Dress to impress and definitely take the leadership role when called upon. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) This week’s full moon highlights your need for personal freedom, expansive thoughts and getting away. Take a break outside to clear you mind and recharge your emotional batteries. Love is still waiting close to home. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You may have been saving for a rainy day but your partner has other thoughts. Hidden activities in joint finances and behind the scenes power struggles come into the spotlight. It’s a public display of affection kind of week.
