Shop local, eat local, enjoy local Hey North Shore – it’s time to show your colours! The Overlanders Bridge upgrade, scheduled to get underway in April, will give North Shore residents an opportunity to shop local. The project will include repairs and resurfacing of the bridge deck, as well as reconstruction of the west side pedestrian sidewalk and resurfacing of the north and south roadway approaches. While the City of Kamloops has assured that there will always be one lane in each direction open, North Shore residents could lessen potential congestion on the bridge by shopping right in their own neighbourhood.

A group of TRU students have developed a campaign focusing on the conservation of water throughout the university campus, with an emphasis on the larger community of Kamloops as well. They are crowd-funding on an internationally recognized platform indiegogo.com and are working towards raising money for the TRU horticulture department to implement a rainwater collection system in one of the greenhouses on campus. The goal of the campaign is to raise $1000.00, with all additional money going towards green initiatives throughout the horticultural department. For further information contact Cheryl Fraser, Geography and Environmental student, TRU at cherylefraser@gmail.com.

Elizabeth Fry Society benefits from provincial civil forfeiture grant The Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society has received funding from the province’s civil forfeiture program toward its Violence Free BC project. “These types of support services are critical for women, youth and children leaving abusive homes,” Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake said. “Having resources that support their physical and mental well-being allows victims of abuse to recover from trauma and restart their lives.”

A grant for $30,000 will go toward women’s second stage and supportive housing in Kamloops. It will support transitional housing and other support services for women, youth and children who have experienced domestic abuse. “The financial support from this grant enables us to put in place a really strong program of supports,” said Louise Richards, executive director of the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society. “This type of housing has long been needed here

and being able to offer this option for women and children is a real boost to the community.” This year, the priority focus for civil forfeiture proceeds is on initiatives about violence against women, through the Violence Free BC initiative, as it will be in years to come. Other areas where funding was made available included serving victims through restorative justice, community and youth crime prevention, and police training and equipment.

BONELESS TOP SIRLOIN STEAKS Manager Graham Peterson, and owner/president Don Macmillan stand in front of a selection of electric guitars at Big Don’s Super Pawn.

So you need a used guitar for your dad’s birthday, a few DVDs for the nephew’s Easter party, a necklace for your grandparents’ anniversary, and a power drill to fix the stairs you have been tripping over. But you don’t have enough money to cover all of these things and payday is five days from now! What are you going to do? Well you can find all of these items and more at Big Don’s Super Pawn. You can also bring in the TV that’s in the basement and pawn it till payday to cover the list of things to buy on your list. Big Don’s Super Pawn opened on May 1, 2008 and has been serving and lending to people all over Kamloops, selling and buying a plethora of different items and rare treasures. “We pride ourselves on being an organized and cleaner retail industry for the community,” explains Graham Peterson, manager of Big Don’s. They provide quality used merchandise and new retail lines for car audio, gold panning, hunting knives and collectibles. Big Don’s employs about seven people right now and they are opening a new store in Nanaimo. A few of the employees have visited the Pawn stars shop in Las Vegas, and also have had some strange and precious items come through the Kamloops shop, including a limited edition Salvador Dali, a silver edition of St. John of the Cross, and countless guitars, golf clubs, tolls electronics, household items and much more! The pawn shop prides itself on lending money, “an alternative to

financial assistance via collateral loans.” Big Don’s provides large purchase assistance with the interest free layaway program. But what was surprising to me was that 85 to 92 percent of people that pawn their items come back and pay the loans off, leaving very little used product back on the shelves to sell to the public. Big Don’s have brought in a custom goldsmith. They create new items and repair jewelry and rings. This includes a jewelry upcycling program, custom pieces, repairs and appraisals. They also have brought in new products to give the customer more selection and the choice to own something that’s not used. They work closely with the RCMP and ensure none of the products they sell are stolen and are involved in community charities including Big Don’s Super Pawn block party, merchandise donations to miscellaneous charities and community groups and involvement with the North Shore Business Improvement Association. These guys take their work very seriously and they are there to help both the community and yourself with the financial assistance of a loan. So the next time you’re a little short on birthday presents, head to Big Don’s Super Pawn and see what kind of treasure is in store for you! Visit Big Don’s Super Pawn at 345 Tranquille Road or call 250376-8829. Corey Rajala

A young man hired by a supermarket reported for his first day of work. The manager greeted him with a warm handshake and a smile, gave him a broom, and said, “Your first job will be to sweep out the store.” “But I’m a college graduate,” the young man replied indignantly. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that,” said the manager. “Here, give me the broom - I’ll show you how.”

Sick in church

Little Bob went with his mom to church every Sunday. One morning in the middle of the service Bob complained that he was feeling a bit queasy and was afraid he was going to puke. “No problem dear,” whispered his Mom in his ear. “Just head on over to the bathroom on the other side of the church and take care of it there.” Thirty seconds later Bob came back. “Did you go to the bathroom?” questioned his Mom. “No need,” responded Bob. “Right outside the door was a big box with a sign next to it ‘For the Sick’, so I just did it in there!”

Just like dad

My daughter sure showed me what a back seat driver I am! On our way to the mall today, I stopped short at a red light causing the car to jolt. As soon as I jerked, my three year old in the back seat hollered ‘Daaaaave!’ Not sure why she had called my husband’s name, I asked her why she had said what she did. “That’s what you say when someone stops like that”, she innocently replied.

Haggling for a raise Sam walks into his boss’s office. “Sir, I’ll be straight with you, I know the economy isn’t great, but I have over three companies after me, and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise.” After a few minutes of haggling the boss finally agrees to a five

per cent raise, and Sam happily gets up to leave. “By the way,” asks the boss as Sam is getting up, “Which three companies are after you?” “The electric company, water company and phone company,” Sam replied.

echo stargazer Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’ve put out a lot of energy lately spinning your wheels in self-promotion. But then again self-promotion is the best promotion. As you enter into a money cycle it’s time to push your financial interests. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Give yourself a break in the game of love. It’s not supposed to be this stressful. Some decisions you can change and others will change for you. So smile in the mirror and you’ll be surprised at how easy love can really be. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Setbacks clear and you have the physical energy to get things in gear. Behind the scenes energy is drawing your attention and you should continue to cultivate the relationships as they develop into something special. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Problems at work haven’t cleared yet but it’s a battle you can win. Friends keep calling and you’d love to get out and play. Part of you already knows a new love is waiting. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’d love to get out with friends, network and generally play but you’re feeling confined by an obligation or commitment. You’re going to have to finish your homework before you can play but the bosses are watching and it’s going to be worth it sooner than you think. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Family advice will have to be taken with a grain of salt but hidden support arrives when you least expect it. Love arrives in the form of the bigger picture. Step back and you’ll see things coming together. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Those closest to you are in the spotlight and could use your smile. You’re heart will want to get away but work is calling. Mixing business with pleasure leads to a prize that’s more than just dollars. Look to the exotic for answers. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) For some reason you feel a need to hide in all of your chores but love is calling. Do your best to keep moving towards your goals but when love smiles be ready to say hello. This is your time for love. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re still super frisky but you have to get back to the day eventually. Watch for accidents as speeds change but the route should be clear. Love develops a step-by-step plan for manifestation. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’ve entered your own love cycle but you’re not exactly sure where to look. Begin from within and take care of your health. A trip to the gym will give you the body and the confidence to say hello. Don’t over reach helping a friend. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) It’s time to take account of your gifts, strengths and personal direction. Can you really get to where you’d like to be with what you have? If not then create the foundation necessary for your dreams to grow naturally and effortlessly. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Your psychic ability normally helps you to read the thoughts of others but getting your point across is a different story. What if you had the gift to put thoughts into the minds of others? Words are convincing but a wink is easier. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
