Tearing up some dirt Kamloops is well known for its biking community. There is everything from downhill, to cross country, road and BMX biking in this active city. The Kamloops BMX track has been on McArthur Island for many years. The club has been in existence since 1980. All ages and sizes are part of the Kamloops BMX Club. “There are kids just out of diapers riding striders, to senior citizens who ride. The city is passionate about biking. Everybody rides a bike in Kamloops, even if it is commuting,” says Deborah Fiddick, of the Kamloops BMX Club executive board. “It all started in a grassroots kinds of way, where a few people got together and wanted to build a track to ride on.” As part of the City of Kamloops planning, the BMX Track is being moved to 200-1550 Ord Road (behind the bus depot) to provide more parking for McArthur Island Sports Centre. Deborah is excited about this transition: “We will get some new gates, a whole new national standard track, a new club house and a possible new coach.” The national standard track is going to open more doors for the club. “Some of our riders are quite good. There are a few who are in the top ten in their class in the province. We have some really

talented riders,” says Deborah. A national standard track has to meet various requirements such as ample parking to host a national event and to have a pro section (parking needs are based on the size of the event which varies regionally, however, a minimum of 500 spaces are needed plus additional space for RV parking and camping). This
national standard also incorporates the proximity to an airport, plenty of bleacher seating, number of hotel rooms available within ten to 15 miles of the venue (approximately 1,000 are needed), a large area for staging (must accommodate ten chute system), ample area and run off at finish line, quality spectator fencing surrounding the track,
Soil Tac or tarp system and ample moto boards or area for moto sheet posting. “Also the technicality of the track will - continued on page 2

The new Ord Road location will also allow the group to build a much larger clubhouse. “It will have a kitchen, showers, bathrooms, a concession and a separate room for sign up and the business end,” adds Deborah. This is a much-needed improvement over the one roomed brick building they used on McArthur Island. “On race nights we are at the track are around dinner and we want to be able to offer reasonable meals for kids for a reasonable cost,” comments Deborah. “Like soups for cold nights and warm nights sandwiches. Of course pizza and hot dogs and fruit or veggie with meals.” The new track is kitty corner to the soccer fields on Singh Street. It is set to open and be ready to go in April with the clubhouse taking a little bit longer. “It is gong to be so much and it is nice to have a fresh start,” adds Deborah. Journey of champions
On Saturday, April 5, the City of Kamloops, Kamloops Long Blades and PacificSport are hosting a celebration to welcome home our athletes and officials. Join speed skating silver medalist Jessica Hewitt, slalom and alpine skier Elli Terwiel, Dianne Barker, International Technical Official for curling; and Jan Antons, Equipment Manager for the bronze-medaling 2014 Men’s Olympic Sledge Hockey Team, at McArthur Island Olympic Ice Sheet from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. From 1:00pm to 2:00 pm, everyone is welcome to strap on a pair of skates and try out speed skating. Bring your own skates, or the Long Blades will have a limited number of skates available to try.
ASK Wellness Society received a donation of over $2,000 from the Kamloops Harley Owners Group. This money will go towards the Dining Out for Life event. The funds from this event on April 24, 2014, will go directly to those individuals and families in Kamloops with respect to their housing, health or employment. Ten restaurants in town will donate 25 per cent of the food revenues to the ASK Wellness Society on Thursday, April 24, 2014.
Libraries move to new catalogue system The TNRD Library System will be moving in early April to a new computer system, which will enhance and improve the library experience for all patrons. This web-based catalogue will become the primary tool for the public to view the library’s collection as well as to place requests for specific material. The Sierra system takes the place of Sitka/Evergreen. For library patrons, the benefits of Sierra will include a more vi-
sually appealing discovery layer that will better showcase library holdings. The new catalogue will also support more sophisticated search techniques, “Did You Mean?” suggestions, popular choices, tag clouds and usercontributed tags. Other features include the ability to review materials, create RSS My Record feeds, enjoy same-day telephone notifications, or register for a card online. Not all of these features
will be available immediately, but the TNRD Library System looks forward to improving the experience in the long term. The TNRD Library System will be providing information in the near future to explain the changes that the move to Sierra will entail, including launch dates. Library staff are committed to making every effort to ensure the transition to Sierra is smooth and has as little impact on patrons as possible.
The City of Kamloops will be joining HomeFree and the Kamloops Homelessness Action Plan to host an upcoming day of learning. The Housing First Forum will introduce an approach to ending homelessness that has been proven to be effective in numerous cities across Canada, North America and the world. Housing First asserts that housing should be provided as a first step to ending homelessness, in combination with supportive services and community resources. This approach has seen tremendous results in reducing rates of homelessness, addictions and mental health issues. HomeFree (formerly the Kamloops Working Group on Homelessness or KWGH) acts as the Community Advisory Board for Kamloops, which makes decisions concerning the allocation of federal homelessness funds and creates a community plan by identifying local needs and prior-
ity areas in housing and homelessness that are updated annually. The Kamloops Homelessness Action Plan is a five-year strategy to end homelessness built on community input, founded on the three focus areas of housing, support services and financial independence. The plan is in year four and has seen remarkable progress since its launch. The Housing First Forum will include guest speakers who have helped initiate the Housing First approach in communities and regions across Canada. This event is intended for anyone interested in ending homelessness. Those involved in operating affordable
housing or providing support services and people with lived experience of homelessness are strongly encouraged to attend. Welcoming all stakeholders in the community, the City and its partners are excited to host an event that will engage the whole community. The Housing First Forum will be on March 26 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Interior Savings Centre’s Parkside Lounge (300 Lorne Street). For more information and to RSVP by March 14, please contact: Claire Macleod, project manager at Housing and Homelessness City of Kamloops at cmacleod@kamloops.ca.

On March 14 at the Old Residential School in celebration of National Social Work Week, Mary Widmer was awarded the Heart of the Grasslands Award. It is her dedication to community support that has given her this recognition amoung her peers. “I think it is important to support the gaps in services in our community,” comments Mary. (l-r) Mary, Lineth Hizon and Jenna McAllister.
Heart warming birthday gifts of inclusion Birthdays are a day to celebrate the day you came into this world. It is a day of sweets, presents and overall fun times. For Annelise Leclerc she enjoyed her ninth birthday surrounded by family and friends, but she asked for a different kind of present. At Falkland Elementary School, Annelise’s teacher Mrs. Adelle Munk strongly advocates community involvement and volunteerism to her students. “As a parent, this has been an amazing experience to watch my daughter and the friends in her class to be affected so deeply by this learning,” says Annelise’s mother Christine. Annelise took this to heart and instead of asking for birthday presents, she asked friends and family members to provide a donation to a charity of her choice. Annelise decided to give her $140 to the Thompson Nicola Ups and Downs Society (TNUDS), a Down syndrome society in Kamloops. “I am really proud of Annelise for doing this,” comments Christine. TNUDS has been in Kamloops for over ten years and is a non-profit society. Dave Ralph, president of the TNUDS, couldn’t be happier. “Annelise is in Grade 4 and for her birthday party she wanted her friends to bring donations instead of presents,” says Dave. “She decided on
TNUDS because she has a cousin in Maple Ridge with Down syndrome.” TNUDS is a small society primarily made up of families who have someone with Down syndrome in the family. They provide networking, education and awareness to the general public about this genetic disorder. Dave and his wife Susan have a 23-year-old son with Down syn-

drome. “It is a common bond we all have,” says Dave. “We are a support system for each other.” On February 23, at Menchies on the North Shore, 23 TNUDS members came together to accept the cheque, enjoy some yogurt and award Annelise with a certificate of appreciation. “She was very excited and also shy about the whole thing,” comments Dave. If you didn’t already know, March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day. Take the time to send good thoughts or donate your time or money to those families who have someone with Down syndrome. This is a time to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with this disorder on a worldly scale. In October TNUDS also hosts the annual Buddy Walk to further bring awareness to Down syndrome. The money will be put into the general fund used to promote the TNUDS activities, community education and awareness. It will also be put towards the packages at Royal Inland Hospital for parents of newborn children with Down syndrome. If you would like to become involved in TNUDS or are looking for support please feel free to call Dave at 250-376-3851 or visit tnuds.org. Ashley Demedeiros

In 1981 Headhunters Shampoo Ltd. opened their doors after the Northills Shopping Centre completed a major renovation. 33 years later, Donna Simpson and Headhunters are the last of the original tenants. She celebrated her anniversary this month on Thursday, March 20. “I opened the shop for artistic reasons,” comments Donna. “I like arts and crafts and helping people.” To commemorate the success of her business, Donna has just recently completed a major renovation to
the shop. It’s a whole new look for Headhunters. There are all new colours on the walls, which create a soothing and relaxing environment. When asked why she thinks her salon is the only original tenant left from 1981, she gave most of the credit to her dedicated clients. “We have a long term clientele support,” adds Donna. “We are careful to listen to what people want. Listen to what they are looking for.” “Also when times are tight, people come to relax; it is getaway for people,’ Donna says. “A haircut
can give a person an uplift on how they feel about themselves.” Headhunters Shampoo Ltd. is the little salon that could. They offer hair colour, highlights and corrective work, full esthetics, body massage, ear piercing, diabetic pedicures and BioSculpture gel nails. If you are looking for a salon, which truly puts its customers first, this is the shop for you. They are located at 700 Tranquille Road and their phone number is 250-376-1244. Ashley Demedeiros

The watermelon patch There was a farmer who raised watermelons. He was doing pretty well, but he was plagued by local kids who would sneak into his patch at night and steal watermelons. After some careful thought he came up with a clever idea that he thinks will scare the kids away for sure. He made up a sign and posts
it in the field. The sign says, “Warning, one of the watermelons in this field has been poisoned.” The farmer goes to inspect his field the next morning and finds a new sign that says, “Warning, now two of the watermelons in this field have been poisoned.”
Now that’s just plane dumb
The military commander had grown increasingly anxious over rumors of an impending air strike from the enemy. He summoned a corporal.
“I want you to climb that mountain and report any sign of a military activity.” The corporal trudged up the mountain and as soon as he crossed the ridge, he saw a squadron of planes heading their way. “There are many planes coming!” he promptly radioed back. “Friends or enemies?” the commander demanded urgently. The corporal again lifted his binoculars to the sky. “They’re flying very closely together, he replied. “I think they must be friends.”
Measuring 80
A city slicker came upon two country folk balancing a long piece of lumber vertically on the ground, while a third fellow with a measuring tape climbed up on the lumber. “What are you doing?” asked the urbanite. “We are trying to measure this piece of wood,” replied the country cousin. “Why not lay it down and measure it?” asked the city fellow. “Nope,” replied the country boy. “That won’t do it! We want the height, not the length!”

After pulling away from the crazed animal, he yelled, “I thought you said your dog didn’t bite!” The RVer muttered, “Ain’t my dog.”

echo stargazer ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Watch your temper. The explosion could be in your home territory. Are you seeking independence? Think carefully about the consequences of making demands. TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 21) Love life appears interesting. You have two options. One is someone you would rather avoid. Be honest and as tactful as you can. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You have a desire to celebrate. The temptation to overspend is strong. Consider what would be fun and interesting that doesn’t require a big expenditure. CANCER (June 22-July 22) You and your product(s) are on display during this period. Maybe you didn’t even intend it, but it is time to be noticed and respected. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You may be the pivoting party in a conflict among others. If you can manage to be even-handed rather than throwing lightning bolts around, you stand a good chance of accomplishing your aim. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23) Love, romance, social and group life is favorable and brings you pleasure. You and a significant other may find healing to an old problem that has been unconsciously sabotaging the relationship. LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23 You have concerns about financial matters. Probably you are stifling your expenditures as much as possible. Meanwhile your love life has turned around and is going smoothly. Another green light is related to your creative work. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) This is a week of nose to the grindstone. You are in a serious frame of mind and feel a need to get things accomplished that began earlier in the year. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) This is a time in which your exuberance and enthusiasm may carry you farther than you really intended to go. Take care that you don’t promise way more than you can deliver. There will be consequences for that. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) You may be feeling challenged in the pocketbook at this time. You know how to tighten your belt. Do so without a lot of whiney thought and you’ll feel better. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Don’t allow fear and pessimism to interfere with your pleasure in life. If something is nagging at you, take a clear and direct look at it. Is there really anything there, or have you invented your own worry? PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You are continuing in a very creative mode. Whatever medium you use, it becomes art and is in touch with the Greater Unconscious. It will turn out well.
