Have a laugh this summer with the Freudian Slips According to Andrew Cooper, co-founder of improv group The Freudian Slips, it’s all about making comedy that he would want to watch onstage. When creating themes and developing shows it’s a question all the actors ask themselves: “What do we want to see?” The approach has been rather successful, as they’ve had “no problem filling seats” for their monthly performances. Brittany McCarthy, one of the co-founders and leader of the troupe says, “Improv is like walking on ice wearing slippers: it’s scary and you slip up a lot but it’s really fun for other people to watch”. Nothing makes the heart pound like making it up as you go along for the amusement of others. The end result is always a treat for both the audience and the performers. Brittany started the group with fellow TRU alumni Jessica Buchanan, whose recent graduation inspired the decision to finally take on the feat of developing an improv group. Together they approached Andrew of Chimera Theatre and The Freudian Slips was born. Along with Brittany and Andrew, local actors Graham Ash, Brooke Ballam, Jeff Daniels, Brittney Martens, Dan Ondang and Josh Sunderman are looking forward to a slapstick filled summer. The City’s KAMPLAN launches into Phase 2 The KAMPLAN Review and Update continues this spring. Following a thorough initial public engagement phase in 2014 and 2015 (Let’s Ta!k Phase 1), the City is now set to return to the public for more dialogue and feedback as it progresses towards a new Official Community Plan (OCP). OCPs like KAMPLAN set direction and priorities to guide decision-making on planning, future growth and land use management within the jurisdiction of a city. As all bylaws and plans developed by a municipality must be consistent with the policies within their OCP, KAMPLAN is effectively the guiding document for planning and land use management for the City. In Phase 1, the City hosted launch events, set up information booths, held community meetings, conducted surveys, and met with youth, First Nations, land developers, sustainability groups, neighbourhood associations and more. From the themes that emerged in Phase 1, a draft Community Vision and Values has been established for the new KAMPLAN. To review the vision and values for the community’s future, visit www.kamloops.ca/ kamplan/visionandvalues.shtml. The City is now entering Let’s Ta!k Phase 2 of the KAMPLAN Review and Update, and will be seeking your comments on two potential land use scenarios under consideration to accommodate population growth in Kamloops over the next 20 years. Feedback will also be sought on the draft goals and initial policy directions within KAMPLAN’s major policy areas – housing, transportation, environment, arts and culture, economic development, community

well-being, land management and development, infrastructure, health and safety, parks and recreation and open space. Let’s Ta!k Phase 2 aims to connect with stakeholders and interested community members through meetings, presentations, media spots, roadshow events, surveys, and, new to the KAMPLAN Review and Update process, OCPizza “meetings-in-abox” where community members and groups can self-organize and provide feedback in a fun and interactive way on their own time and at a location of their choice… and the pizza is free! Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks on opportunities to participate. In the meantime, if you haven’t already done so, send an email to kamplan@ kamloops.ca to receive e-updates on upcoming events and ways to get involved. You can also visit the KAMPLAN Review and Update webpage at www.kamloops.ca/ kamplan/update.shtml for more information, including background reports and previous versions of KAMPLAN. The City’s Transportation Master Plan is also being updated. The KAMPLAN Review and Update and the 2010 Sustainable Kamloops Plan are defining a new vision for a sustainable Kamloops. Updating the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) integrates and connects these planning initiatives. The TMP will be developed in four phases, with completion in early 2017. To find out how you can get involved, visit the Transportation Master Plan Update webpage at www.kamloops.ca/ transportation/tp-master.shtml.

The annual Antique and Gun Show was held at McArthur Island on April 23 and 24 and was filled with many interesting booths. Multiculturalism grants give boost to local organizations Three organizations in Kamloops have each been awarded a grant of $2,480 to promote the region’s rich multicultural heritage and nurture empathy and inclusion. The recipients are: Kamloops Child Development Society: Funding will help the society hold its first Multicultural Children’s Festival on May 14. The day will be an educational approach that values and recognizes cultural backgrounds, where children and families can participate in interactive stations experiencing various cultural traditions. Kamloops Art Gallery: The grant will support the gallery’s project Who are we? Cultural Engagement through Text and Images. The goal of the project is to create and share a widely accessible visual representation of the cultural diversity that exists in BC, and in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District specifically. Kamloops Arts Council: Funding will help the council hold the 2016 Children’s Arts Festival taking

place September 16 and 17. The festival will create a sense of community, understanding and acceptance while celebrating the magic of creativity. “Our cultural diversity of one of the many things that make the Kamloops area so special,” Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone said. “The recipients of these grants are great local organizations that make our community stronger, and our government is proud to support their programs. “Encouraging inclusion and diversity benefits the entire community,” Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake said. “By providing

financial assistance to these organizations, we can promote different perspectives, combat racism and celebrate our many cultures and traditions in Kamloops.” The Multiculturalism Grant Program celebrates BC’s cultural diversity by funding projects that raise awareness of our province’s rich multicultural identity. This can include festivals, community forums or cultural celebrations that support positive expressions of multiculturalism. The grants also support projects that challenge racism and hate, especially those that utilize a collaborative community approach.

Volunteer opportunity Interior Community Services is looking for volunteers to do child minding. The volunteers will help watch children while their parents are in learning sessions Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00pm. The volunteers will assist the staff in the children’s area to watch the children, and be an extra set of eyes and ears. Experience with large groups of children and first aid are assets. You must be 19+ to volunteer. To find out more or to volunteer, stop by Interior Community Services, 396 Tranquille Road or call 250-376-3660 or 250-554-3134.

Adventures in Babysitting I’m standing in the liquor store, looking to buy some wine with my babysitting money. No, this isn’t some memory that unfolds into a charming anecdote, this was just this past Saturday afternoon. Sorry, I should have specified. Aren’t other adults buying their Pinot with cash they earned at their latest babysitting gig? Meh, whatever, I’m happy to help and appreciate the spare paper for my pocketbook. Also, as I did the math the other night, I have been babysitting off and on for over twenty-two years, so I’m pretty much an expert. I have a pretty solid handle on being silly, fun, safe, professional and child-friendly in the time in takes for more adultier parental types to catch dinner and a movie. Frankly, it’s also the only way I get a chance to catch up with Disney and Pixar movies. My husband isn’t much into animation and it never occurs to me to watch a cartoon all alone. Not having children of my own, it really leaves one’s cinematic checklist lacking. After Toy Story 3, which according to IMDB is the longest

PERFECTLY FABULOUS Alicia Ashcroft

of all the Toy Story movies (babysitter fail!), is a hilarious, yet touchingly emotional rollercoaster. Once the credits have rolled, it’s down to the business of hitting the hay...ASAP. Bath time, a solid hour after the prescribed bedtime, gets a little silly. I’ve established myself as a cool babysitter, a hip babysitter and now I have to be the firm but fair bouncer at this baby nightclub. We’ve had a good time, we ate some popcorn, stayed up late, we laughed, we cried— (just me, at the end of Toy Story

3…who saw that coming?), but now it’s time to get those PJ’s on, drop that head on the pillow and be solidly through a full REM cycle before your parents come home. My tough-guy act is melting like sugar in the rain, after all, these kids saw me blubber during a cartoon. I have zero credibility. I’m negotiating with a preschooler who has lost his towel and is now streaking around the house, laughing hysterically. Just got to get those pull-ups on—that’s his responsibility. “Are you a big boy who puts on his own pants? Or do I have to do this for you?” I eye up the tiny cartooned pants, quickly assessing which way is the front, is it Winnie the Pooh or is it Eeyore? My eyebrows furrow slightly as I try to work my way around the disposable undies. Still laughing, the little boy says, “You don’t even know which way is the front!” Get out of my head little buddy, you don’t know my life. Nothing more nerve-racking than a four year old sees right through you. Must work on my pull-ups poker face for next time.

The North Shore of Kamloops is a vibrant community. Whether you grew up here, work here, or play here; people love it here. We are the North Shore.

A middle-aged couple, with two beautiful daughters, decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted. Soon, the wife became pregnant, and, nine months later, delivered a baby boy. The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son, but was horrified to find an incredibly ugly baby. He went to his wife and said, “I cannot possibly be the father of that hideous child. Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered.” When his wife blushed, he became suspicious and demanded, “Have you been fooling around on me?” His wife confessed, “Not this time.”

Clone Troopers go into a bar

NOT THE THERMOS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

Two Clone Troopers are on leave and decide to visit a bar on Earth. They try to order some drinks but the barman says, “Sorry but we don’t serve your type.” The Clones are a bit put off but ask, “Would you serve us if we bought everybody in this bar free drinks and meals for the rest of the night?” The bartender doesn’t need to think about this for too long and soon everybody is running up a bill courtesy of the generous Troopers. Finally the night comes to an end and the barman gleefully tots up a final bill. “Ok, gentlemen,” he says, “That will be $12,000 please.” “No problem at all,” says a Clone pulling out his wallet, “Would you have change for a Kaminoan zonk?”

What are we going to give this guy? “Don’t worry,” said the owner to the cook, “I’ll take care of everything, you just make the salad.” And that’s how it happened that two minutes later the waiter walked out with a big garden salad and a picture of a Russian man putting on his pants.

After two Biker Scouts left Mos Eisley Cantina, they found that their bikes had been stolen. Walking back into the bar, there was a lot of sniggering so they deduced that the locals were messing them about. Firing their blasters in the air and removing detonators from their belt, one Scout shouted, “You have two minutes to return our bikes or we’ll be forced to do what we did on Endor!” There was an immediate flurry of activity and the bikes were soon back outside. As they powered up their bikes and set off, the bartender appeared outside. “I have to know what happened on Endor!” he shouted to them. One of the Scouts turned around and shouted back to the bartender, “We had to walk home!”

Just for Mom

Two children ordered their mother to stay in bed one Mother’s Day morning. As she lay there looking forward to breakfast in bed, the smell of bacon floated up from the kitchen. But after a good long wait she finally went downstairs to investigate. She found them both sitting at the table eating bacon and eggs. “As a surprise for Mother’s Day,” one explained, “we decided to cook our own breakfast.”

NORTH SHORE ECHO

ECHO STARGAZER DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) There’s trouble with money but you’re currently attracting and beginning a new personal astrocycle so expect opportunities to present themselves where and when you need them. A new haircut late in the week does wonders to reset your mood. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21)You’re tired, fighting with partners and progress seems halted by illusions. Take a deep breath and knock on new doors. Love is waiting with a different tribe. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) You have some decisions to make but you seem torn between worlds. You can have it all but you’ll have to go an extra mile and take a leap of faith. By the new moon, you’ll know what to do. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) If the kids are causing fits then take a deep breath and count to ten. Be careful to keep them behaved when out and about. Professionals are checking to see how you handle the pressure. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) If you’ve been surfing the energies then you should be having a good year filled with romance, money and now adventure. If someone different from your usual type smiles then it’s a good idea to see where it leads. They just might be the icing to sweeten your day. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Wrap up relationship decisions at the beginning of the week and get ready to speed forward. The new moon late in the week stimulates a new joint project and you’ll want your heart to be settled and safe as you move on to improving your finances. Love is waiting with someone dark and mysterious. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Money continues to be tight but you should already be prepared for unexpected trouble. Love has begun looking for you again but signals are crossed and you might be surprised at who stops in to say hello. In a strange twist, you’d rather spend time at the office anyways. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) As the sun begins to warm the day, you’d love to get out and play. Your thinking has shifted to the practical and a dream suddenly has a plan. Mix business with pleasure and you just might please everyone in the room. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Be careful who you trust with your heart and your pocketbook. A creative project gathers interest and investors. A short midweek break recharges emotional batteries. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re still lucky in joint finances but a new home based project positions you for a chance to break free. Clean up messes and ask for help. You have the second chance you’ve been hoping for. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You’re super aggressive professionally and although it’s bumping some people the wrong way, you should keep going. Your heart might become heavy with financial impatience but it’s time to spread the word not necessarily to cash cheques. Become the dream that sets you apart. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Finances and personal decisions have you feeling trapped and unable to live the life you really want. An opportunity to improve your bank balance arrives with a chance for adventure. A timely decision opens closed doors.
