Choice matters with accessible recreation – continued from page 1 amples of sports inclusion classes are Adaptive Yoga, where the basic yoga exercises are modified for those with special needs and enjoyed in a well-supported environment at your own pace or Adapted Swim Lessons for persons with developmental or physical disabilities. Caregivers and assistants are encouraged to join and help with participants to ensure a fun and safe environment. Although our focus is on summer activities at this time, disabled sports enthusiasts can also enjoy winter sports with organizations like Adaptive Sports at Sun Peaks (ASSP) which provides opportunities for people with a wide range of disabilities to participate in adaptive snow sports and winter recreation programs. The Interior Savings Centre in January offers a hockey program for children with special needs and developmental delays as well. Young participants are taught the basic skating and hockey skills that every player needs. Kamloops may have the podium at the Special Olympics

competition sewn up when our disabled youngsters are encouraged to participate and discover the sports activity they are passionate about. Although the City of Kamloops cannot provide personal care, administer medication or give one to one assistance they do offer free admittance to any activity for caregivers of those needing extra support. Many programs, especially for children in our area encourage siblings to join as well, free of charge to help make the experience more comfortable. Choice matters, and the City of Kamloops aims to give you choices. Sign up for an adapted program or join in with regular programming, the choice is yours. Accessible Recreation will work with you to make it happen. For more information on programs, intake process for RAPS, ARCH, or any questions regarding accessible recreation in Kamloops please contact Ben Chobater, community development coordinator at 250-828-3582 or email at bchobater@kamloops.ca Trina Budai

More than $50,000 was raised in Kamloops by our super citizens on Wednesday, May 6 for McHappy Day and our North Shore McDonald’s crew was happily kept busy! Every dollar from the sales of Big Mac’s, Happy Meal and McCafe beverage goes to local children’s charities.

Desert Sounds Harmony wins again For the second year in a row, Desert Sounds Harmony Chorus won in their category at Sweet Adelines regional competition recently in Surrey, BC. This annual competition consists of approximately 2,000 Sweet Adelines representing their area across BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Desert Sounds Harmony represents Kamloops and surrounding area as a chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI). SAI is a collection of choruses and quartets who sing a cappella harmony in contemporary, modern barbershop, and popular styles. 25 members, plus one director represented Desert Sounds Harmony this year at Chandros Pattison Auditorium. This is the first time director Deb Swain has directed at the competition. Here’s what she has to say, “This incredible group of women really stepped up their performances this year and have shown hard work and de-

termination really do pay off. It has been an amazing year since our first Open Division, Audience Choice Award win last year. Our performance last year was lauded as a great example of what the international organization was after with the new Open Division contest, so coming into this year’s competition, the expecta-

tions were very high! The momentum that last year’s win created seemed to really propel this chorus in a fabulous way. This second award-winning Pirates seemed to almost create itself from the energy of last year’s win! We did not disappoint! I’m am so very proud of the work and that each and everyone of our members has

done...Our chorus has really put Kamloops on the map in our International Organization!” Besides regular weekly rehearsals to refine their craft, this group enjoys performing at special events around the city and surrounding area. They encourage any lady who enjoys singing to contact them at dshchorus.ca.

Students with disabilities get skills for jobs

The provincial government is providing $50,000 to Thompson Rivers University to develop training and resources aligned with in-demand occupations in a range of sectors for students with disabilities. TRU’s funding is part of nearly $1.3 million being delivered to 20 public post-secondary institutions throughout the province as part of the first anniversary of B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint. “This initiative is more than a monetary investment; it also recognizes

and encourages the contributions that people with disabilities make in our workplaces,” KamloopsNorth Thompson MLA Terry Lake said. “Removing these barriers will result in an influx of talented and capable students at TRU.” The grants also support Accessibility 2024, a tenyear action plan announced in June 2014 that includes goals, actions and longterm measures to make BC the most progressive place in Canada for people with disabilities. The provincial govern-

ment launched BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint in April 2014 to align funding and programs with in-demand occupations. The Blueprint includes goals to provide better access to technical and trades-related training for learners with disabilities. BC anticipates more than one million job openings by 2022; more than 78 per cent of these positions will require some form of post-secondary education and 44 per cent will need skilled trades and technical workers.

Safe cycling reminders from Interior Health Kids of all ages love cycling. Cycling is fun, healthy and practical. It is a great way to spend time as a family, get exercise and travel around the neighbourhood. However, as with other forms of transportation, there are risks. Cycling is a leading cause of unintentional injury and hospitalization in Canadian kids under age 14 and those injuries can be very serious. “While the most common cycling injuries among children are broken bones and scrapes, head injuries are the number one cause of serious injury and death,” says Dr. Heather Wilson, trauma services medical director. “Unfortunately, every year in our emergency departments we see children with bicycle related injuries that are preventable.” Putting safety first ensures everyone enjoys the ride. “Following safe cycling practic-

es, such as wearing a helmet, having a properly adjusted bike and following the rules of the road can save lives,” said Lex Baas who is practice lead with promotion and prevention. “Parents, as both teachers and role models, play a key role in keeping kids safe on the road.” In the interest of educating cyclists on proper bicycle safety, Interior Health has distributed the following cycling safety tips for the whole family. Firstly, parents and children should wear a properly fitted bike helmet. Ensure bikes are adjusted to the recommended height for the rider, tires are inflated and brakes are working properly. A helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by up to 80 per cent. Everyone in the family should be trained in bicycle safety and the rules of the road. This includes the use of proper hand

signals and understanding and obeying all traffic signs so that everyone is prepared for the rules of the road. Another important factor to consider is if you decide to take a bicycle ride after dark, always try to pick family-friendly well-lit bike routes and protect young riders by using designated areas for riding when available. Make sure bikes have reflectors and lights as it makes it easier to be seen. Always ride on the right side of the road, the same direction that traffic is going and stay as far to the right as possible. Put bells on bikes and use them to announce when passing. If you don’t have a bell, use your voice to let pedestrians and other cyclists know your intentions to pass in a clear, polite manner. echo stargazer Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’d like to get out and play but money is becoming tight. Recent events put you in the spotlight and the attention was heartfelt but fans missed the efforts you’ve been putting towards your goals. Your inner beauty deserves just as much attention as your outer sparkle. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Both the behind the scenes battle and the energy drain finally end and you’ll be back on track with your new beginnings. Put yourself first but it’s not a week to indulge. Money is also on the way but it belongs in the bank. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Hidden enemies reveal themselves as those close surprise you with a different opinion. Energy will be low and there’s no reason to fight if you’re headed in a different direction. Love is finally flowing freely in your direction. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Your bright smile has picked up a secret crush and this time you’d like to make it work. It’s a behind the scenes affair for the moment as you piece together the facts. Yes, they are cute and definitely special. But will your friends understand? Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’ve been busy lately and you’d like the recognition that’s supposed to follow hard work. Don’t worry. It’s on the way. If you can curb the natural Virgo tendency to complain, a friend will open a hidden door. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Attraction blesses your public image and career with a promotion or new job. Do your best to be your best and you’ll get the part. Bold, generous and expansive attitudes will win the day. Delays cause bumps in long distance travel. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Watch for ego conflicts in business affairs. If things are meant to be then it will smooth over in a couple of weeks. If not, then you’ll be looking elsewhere. Be flexible but don’t give in to a bad idea just to keep the peace. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) New love has you frisky and fired up for an adventure. If you take the lead and show someone the beauty of your world then the love will be returned. Your relationship energy is peaking but patience is still required. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Somehow along the way your general workload has increased. It’s not necessarily more responsibility at the office but rather general chores and busywork. On the plus side, you’re now attracting love and the people that you meet like what they see. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) A battle heats up over a creative project but it doesn’t have to end the relationship. You’re having difficulty expressing your inner voice and your partner is taking advantage of the opportunity. A new partner could do the job just as well. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) It’s springtime, the birds are singing, and romance is in the air. Yes, it’s busy. But you’re about to play a starring role in a beautiful and romantic adventure. Kids will be blessed and their smiles will lead the way. Have faith in a new beginning. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’ve come into some money recently and you’re now looking to spend it. You’ll be busy chasing new business but it’s time to ground yourself. A family member introduces you to someone special.
