Get out your costumes and race for kids Some of our best memories are from when we were kids without a care in the world. What if you could go back and relive some of the adventures you went on when you were a child? Your chance is here with the second annual Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops Capital One Race for Kids on May 31. Capital One Race for Kids is an urban adventure race where teams of four will compete in a series of checkpoints in a race to the finish line. Checkpoints are designed to challenge the mind, body and team spirit, and intended to engage participants while promoting playfulness and teamwork. This event not only will get you back in tune with your younger self, it will help Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops raise funds and awareness for their Power Start program, so all children have the opportunity to achieve their potential. Event planner Carly Rowsome urges people to get involved in this day of goofy fun, which begins at 10:00am at the Kamloops Yacht Club, 1140 River Street. “It is an adult race that benefits the Boy and Girls Club,” says Carly. “Adults get to behave like kids while completing goofy challenges. Teams of four race to locate ten checkpoints, with a bonus check point they can get extra points from. The top three teams will win cash prizes.” Another way you can get a leg up on

the competition is by fundraising more money. The more your team fundraises, the more you get a head start at the event. Teams may only travel by foot or local transit. No other form of transportation is allowed. Teams may access the Internet, cell phones or general public as information sources. “You don’t need to be a super star athlete or extremely smart; it only requires a lot of teamwork,” comments Carly about the checkpoint challenges. “You

will encounter everything from puzzles, relay races to obstacles courses. Last year they had to build a tower of spaghetti and marshmallows.” The Boys and Girls Club is looking forward to partnering with local businesses to create checkpoint challenges and stations. Your sponsorship helps them deliver critically important programs to children and youth of Kamloops. All the money raised stays in Kamloops to help the future generation. In partnership with local elemen-

tary schools the Boys and Girls Club offers a program called Power Start. This program includes transportation to school for children from their home starting at 7:00 am. Once at school, children participate in a breakfast program, and then join Club program staff and volunteers in movement, relaxation, grooming and preparation for the school day. When school begins the children go to their classrooms ready to learn with a - continued on page 2

Bob Gieselman, Chair of the Candidate Nomination Committee for the Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo Electoral District Association, confirmed on May 12 that Cathy McLeod has been acclaimed as the Conservative Party Candidate for the next federal election in 2015. “I am deeply honoured to be nominated by the members of Kamloops – Thompson-Cariboo Conservative Association as their candidate for the next election,” says Cathy. “I look forward to continuing to work hard for the constituents of this riding as Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo.” The Kamloops SPCA book sale at the North Hills Mall was a great success from May 10 to 17. The book sale proceeds all went towards the BCSPCA City Challenge that is going on between our fine city and Prince George. Don’t worry, there are still some other events you can attend to help us kick the northern city’s butt. May 23 is the Fur Ball, May 24 is a dog was at River City Nissan and the wrap-up barbeque on May 31.

Call for Kamloops citizens to nominate favourites The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and TD Bank Group announced on May 14 that the call for nominations has officially begun for the 2014 Business Excellence Awards. “It’s time again for everyone to nominate the business or person that has gone above and beyond within our community,” comments Aleece Laird, president of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce. “Anyone can nominate and any business can be nominated. It only takes a couple of minutes, so don’t be shy!” The complete list of the 16 award

categories and their sponsors was unveiled. “TD’s values of providing legendary customer experiences and being an extraordinary place to work align perfectly with the Business Excellence Awards and we are happy to once again be the Premier Sponsor of this important community event,” states Lindy Baird, Branch Manager with TD. “We are always striving for excellence and relevance and our committee felt that it was time to revise the award criteria,” states Laird. “Now when nominees submit their packages to the Selection Committee, they will have a clearer sense

of what is required of them.” Nominations can be made online at KamloopsChamber.ca and at the following Kamloops locations: TD Downtown: 102-301 Victoria Street, TD Northills Mall: 29-700 Tranquille Road, TD Columbia Square: 600-500 Notre Dame Drive, TD Valleyview Square: 8-2121 East Trans Canada Hwy, TD City View Shopping Centre: 1801 Princeton-Kamloops Highway and Kamloops Chamber of Commerce Office: 615 Victoria Street.

Effective at noon on May 15, the size of open fires will be restricted in most of the Kamloops Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect the public. This prohibition applies to all areas of the Kamloops Fire Centre except the Clearwater Fire Zone and the Salmon Arm Fire Zone. The Clearwater Fire Zone and the Salmon Arm Fire Zone will become subject to this prohibition on June 15, when all open burning will be prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. Anyone lighting Category two or three fires outside of those two zones must extinguish any such fires by noon on May 15. This

prohibition will remain in effect until October 15, or until further notice. This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide (or smaller) and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but it does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws in place and is serviced by a fire department. Before lighting any fire, residents should check with local government authorities regarding any current prohibitions.

Since April 1, Kamloops Fire Centre crews have responded to 49 wildfire incidents. Many of these wildfires resulted from poorly planned open burning. The Kamloops Fire Centre stretches from the northern border of Wells Gray Park to the U.S. border to the south, and from the Bridge River Glacier west of Gold Bridge to the Monashee Mountains east of Lumby. For information about open burning and tips on making responsible burning decisions, please download one of the open burning guides at: bcwildfire.ca/ hprScripts/WildfireNews/Bans. asp.

Race for Kids - continued from front nutritious snack for recess. The goal of this program is to alleviate barriers for children to reach their full potential. “It provides transportation, good food, inclusion for our more vulnerable kids,” Carly comments. “As of right now this program doesn’t have permanent funding so the Race for Kids is extremely important.” Children who take part in this program may be experiencing challenges in getting to school on time and are chosen by school staff. Do you have children? Don’t worry; they will be entertained by staff from the Boys and Girls Club while you race. During the event they will be running a ‘Kids Pit Crew’ with fun games and activities so your children can be involved too. To register your child, call the Boys and Girls Club today at 250-554-5437. Come on Kamloops, get out and play as well as support local youth programs. “You can have fun and living the joys of childhood again while benefiting the youth of Kamloops,” Carly states. “There are so many ways to get involved. You can volunteer, enter on a team and you can also sponsor a checkpoint to draw people into your own business and you get to design the checkpoint.” Please connect with Carly Rowsome, Race for Kids event planner, Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops at 250-5545437 or resource@bgckamloops. com if you have any questions. Teamwork creates a stronger community It is always amazing to see what a little teamwork can produce. On Saturday May 10, Fusion Rotaract and the staff from Hotel 540 teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club for a Day of Caring. Together they took the first steps towards transforming the courtyard at the John Tod Community Centre. After closing its doors four years ago, the John Tod Centre has recently begun housing a number of YM/ YWCA programs and is in the process of renovations as it will become the Boys and Girls Club’s new home come September. Bright and early Saturday morning, the first crew of volunteers from the Fusion Rotaract arrived with a long list of work in front of them. With shovels and rakes in hand, the team began removing cedars, weeds and raking leaves. Before noon, the difference in the space was already astounding. After a yummy lunch prepared by volunteers

from the Boys and Girls club, staff from Hotel 540 arrived ready to take over from the morning crew and continue with the many tasks still in need of completion. Crews worked together removing large roots left over from the

Dragon fever is taking hold in the city There is nothing quite as impressive as a dragon boat cutting through the water. It is easy to spot one as they usually have a decorative Chinese dragonhead and tail on the body of the vessel and the sound of a drum rises above the water. These massive human-powered boats have

roots in ancient Chinese history and culture. Long time member Ray Perreault loves all aspects of dragon boating. “I thought dragon boaters were a breed apart from regular people. I soon found out they are regular people. There is such a wide variety and the com-

radery is unlike anything else. Also you don’t have to be a super athlete to do it.” They practice on Mondays at 5:15pm, Wednesdays at 6:15pm and at 8:15am on Saturdays. If you would like additional information please visit their website at kamloopsdragonboatclub.ca.

Enjoy some live theatre to kick start your summer at the Stage House Theatre. Currently taking the stage is Any Given Monday by Bruce Graham. The show runs May 30, 31 and June 8 and 9. The doors open at 7:30pm with the show starting at 8:00pm. This off Broadway acclaimed script is set in gritty Philadelphia. It is a raw, biting comedy/drama that introduces us to four days in the life of a downtrodden Lenny whose philandering wife, Rise has left him for a lover. Enter Mick, Lenny’s best friend, whose opinionated rants end with a confession of extraordinary and life-changing results for all involved in the plot.

Bat encounters can put you at risk for rabies Some people think they are cute and others find them creepy. Whether you are fascinated or fearful, the bottom line is it’s important to avoid coming into physical contact with bats, the primary carrier of the rabies virus in B.C. Between four and eight per cent of the bats that are tested after coming into contact with people are found to have the rabies virus. Infected bats can transmit rabies to humans when their saliva comes into contact with a person’s mucus membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) or through a break in the skin.

Rabies is a very serious disease that affects the nervous system. It is almost always fatal if not treated in time. Last year, 32 people in the Interior Health region were treated for potential exposure to rabies. “With the long weekend just around the corner, we want to remind people to be careful around bats. Many people will be bringing summer gear out of storage or heading out to open the cabin. Activities like these can lead to unexpected encounters with bats,” says Jennifer Jeyes, Communicable Disease specialist with Interior Health. “Bats

often fly into poorly sealed cabins and homes, they roost in attic spaces and they can even be found hanging inside closed patio umbrellas. “All contact with bats should be taken seriously. Bats have tiny sharp teeth and claws, so scratches or

bites may not be visible or painful but could still be there,” says Jennifer. “Anyone who has come into contact with a live or dead bat should call their local public health until or doctor right away. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.”

Sharing in a passion for the word of the Bible The Christadelphians have been in Kamloops for over 35 years. They are a Bible based group who believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God. “Our group has slowly but surely grown over the years,” comments Jon Fletcher of the Christadelphians. The group currently rent space in the Parkview Activity Center on the North Shore. They do not rely on a clergy but on personal Bible study based solely on the scriptures in the Bible. “We may be a small group in Kamloops but we are part of a worldwide committee of small or large groups right around the globe,” Jon adds. The group hosts a series of Sunday evening lectures or study sessions, which focus on previously chosen topics. “Anyone is welcome to attend our meeting to see what we are all about,” says Jon. One example of their subject matter is to take a humanitarian topic and using the gospel as their guide, discuss why there is so much sorrow and suffering in this world. Another example is a frequent look at current world events and how the

Taking a pet fish camping An RVer named Stanley was stopped recently by a game warden in Northern California as the RVer was returning to his Roadtrek motorhome with a bucket full of stillalive fish. “Do you have a license to catch those fish?” the game warden asked. The man replied, “No, sir. These are my pet fish.” “Pet fish?” the warden asked. “Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to the lake where I’m camped and let them swim around for awhile. When they hear my whistle, they jump right back into the bucket and I take them back to the motorhome.” “That’s a bunch of baloney,” the

game warden said as he reached for his pad of citations. The man looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, “If you don’t believe me, then follow me back to the lake to see how it works.” Still suspicious, but curious about the man’s proposal, the game warden agreed. And to they walked to the lake. There, the man poured the fish into the lake, where they disappeared into the water. “Okay,” said the game warden. “Call them back.” “Call who back?” “The fish,” replied the warden. “What fish?” asked the man.

The cheeky chauffeur When Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speaker’s circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to yet another rubber-chicken dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks and manner) that he was tired of speechmaking. “I have and idea, boss,” his chauffeur said. “I’ve heard you give this speech so many times. I’ll bet I could give it for you.” Einstein laughed loudly and said, “Why not? Let’s do it!” When they arrive at the dinner,

Einstein donned the chauffeur’s cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Einstein’s speech and even answered a few questions expertly. Then a supremely pompous professor asked an extremely esoteric question about anti-matter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know that he was nobody’s fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, “Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me.”

May 21, 2014 n 15

echo stargazer TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) You may have a tendency during this period to slide into old and outmoded patterns of emotional behavior. Maybe this will be brought on by the re-entry of someone in your life. While it may be fun for a short time, very quickly you will become fatigued with it and shake loose of that outdated habit. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Whatever you begin or initiate between now and the 29th will probably have to be tweaked or somehow redone between June 17 and July 1. Otherwise you are at peace with yourself. CANCER (June 22-July 22) You have likely been dealing with a decision concerning property or family issues. You have spent a few weeks in this process and now you have arrived at a conclusion. If it is a purchase or a sale, you have the cosmic green light. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You are the Grand Central Station of multiple phone calls and negotiations among your peers. You are probably asking, “How did I get here?” If you wish to lay down your organizing abilities, you certainly may. However, you are the only one with all the information. Your position is central and you probably will be pushed toward the center anyway. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Day to day life is favorable at present. There are no big conflicts between you and anyone of importance. Social life is favored with partner, friends, and neighbors. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) People of the past may resurface. You will be glad to see these individuals, but more likely you will be reminded why they are no longer in your life. Somehow they are associated with old wounds in your life and you would just as soon let those memories go back to the ethers. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 –Nov. 22) Please see the Aries horoscope. Because Mars is also your ruling planet, that paragraph also applies to you. There is a repetition of one aspect of importance that began in the summer of 2013. It is a fortuitous aspect concerning travel, education, publications and the law. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Someone in the background of your life is steering you rightly. This person (or a favorable situation) has been there since last summer to give you a leg up. You’ll have this privilege through June and then this person moves on. But you will be left with a blessing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) This is a highly favorable time for business and career. You have the right credentials and will be moving up the ladder soon, if you so choose. For those who have been looking for a new position, this is the week that brings a favorable opportunity. Love and social life are favored. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You have been favored with very good employees, whether household or business, since last summer. If you think back, you will realize that you have been given good help whenever help is needed. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Pisces is not prone to give a lot of attention to investments, but this is the time. You probably have holdings that are barely making money. They are essentially collecting dust. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Your ruling planet, Mars, turned direct on May 19. You barely have your sense of balance after a long trip backward. Slowly, gradually, you will discover that you can move forward again. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Vivian Carol.
