FunFest welcomes summer The Interior Community Services’ adult day program “Options and Opportunities” have organized an event to ring in the summer called “FunFest” to celebrate diversity and inclusion of people living with varying abilities in our beautiful city. This year’s event takes place on Friday, June 5 at McDonald Park. Options and Opportunities has been bringing a variety of day programs for adults with physical or developmental disabilities and providing them with support to discover their own personal interests, strengths and preferences and helping develop meaningful friendships and connections. The recreation based community inclusion group helps participants enhance their own independence through community outings that encourage socializing and allows participants the chance to do volunteer work with other organizations in the community as well. For fifteen years now, FunFest has been hosted by the participants of Options and Opportunities for friends both old and new. Attendees include family, caregivers and advocates, members of local organizations, visual artists, musicians and many more. Over the years, the gathering has grown from humble picnic origins to festival proportions and has seen over two hundred attendees but despite the size, the spirit has remained the same. It is a festive time to celebrate the sunshine, culture and community of Kamloops Dance your way to FunFest. and share some time with a very special

group of people who simply wish to say thank you and give back to the community that we all love. There will be activities and entertainment for everyone, food and drinks, art workshops, traditional hand drummers, musical acts, interactive games, and endless dancing. At last year’s gathering, many will remember the spontaneous Zumba dance-off that took place and the great fun had by all. This year’s celebration promises more of the same hilarity and memorable moments to be had. Darren Fleming is a community support worker with Interior Community Services and has been involved with FunFest and the amazing people hosting the event for some time now. He calls this event “A picnic for our people” and says “FunFest allows us to give back to our community and celebrates the friendships and community inclusion O & O has fostered throughout the year bringing together friends and family to welcome the summer sunshine.” Join in the festivities all day at McDonald Park at this year’s FunFest event! Help enrich the lives of valued individuals in our community by showing your support of community inclusion by attending on June 5 and make a new friend along the way. Share, eat, talk with seniors at kitchen project The Province is providing $150,000 to support a neighbourhood kitchen that will provide nutritious meals and be a forum for seniors to showcase their wealth of knowledge in preparing food, Health Minister Terry Lake announced on Friday, May 15. “The kitchen will be a welcoming environment for those in Kamloops wanting to get an inexpensive, healthy meal or to take home important knowledge on food preparation,” said Lake. “The kitchen will also give seniors a way to remain connected to the community and pass along their own knowledge in the kitchen to others.” The funding will go toward the Centre for Seniors Information BC Interior Society to expand its current concession space, which offers lunch-style meals to seniors, into a larger kitchen that will function as a hub for all Kamloops residents.
Programs will include a daily lunch program, food canning and preserving, budgeting and healthy meal options, as well as job skills development opportunities. It will allow seniors and other community members to get together on a regular basis to build important cooking skills and prepare food that is delicious and nutritious. The hands-on training will also play a role in gaining experience for jobs in the food-service sector. “Today’s announcement is great news as this kitchen will provide healthy meals for those in the community as well as support our local seniors so they can remain active and engaged,” said Todd Stone, Kamloops-South Thompson MLA. Seniors will have the opportunity to teach their cooking skills to others as well as learn new ones. The kitchen will be used by a diverse group, but the majority of programs
and services have seniors in mind and is expected to be operational later this year. “The development of the CSI neighbourhood kitchen has been a focal point for the last few years. It is a significant step forward in meeting the needs of our growing senior population and the delivery of community based programs. The activity centre combined with the neighbourhood kitchen will play a key role in our community,” said Centre for Seniors Information executive director Brenda Prevost. The Centre for Seniors Information runs a variety of programs such as fraud and elder abuse awareness, information and referrals on community organizations and services, health, wellness and housing. The centre is also a venue for gatherings for bingo, cards, breakfasts, potlucks and dances. The neighbourhood kitchen
With the support of local philanthropist, Ken Lepin, the Royal Inland Hospital Lab unveiled a piece of new equipment that will be used to determine the drug resistance of bacteria. The MALDI/ TOF Mass Spectrophotometer uses laser technology to allow the analysis of biomolecules and large organic molecules which tend to be fragile and fragment when ionized by more conventional methods. Dr. Lisa Steele, pathologist at RIH, explained that the MALDI/TOF will serve as a method for identifying bacteria as drug resistant in a matter of hours. This technique could help physicians decide whether to prescribe more aggressive antibiotics initially. Hosted by the Pathology and Laboratory at RIH, Mr. Ken Lepin also announced an additional gift of $300,000 to be directed to the Lab. In total, Mr. Lepin has contributed over one million dollars to RIH making him the largest individual donor to the hospital in Kamloops. Alan Gozda, Chair of the RIH Foundation Board, thanked Mr. Lepin for his incredible support and spoke about the impact of his past donations. Some of the highlights of his previous contributions include: $100,000 to the ICU campaign in 2010; $65,000 for operating room equipment in 2012 and $150,000 in 2013 which allowed the purchase of an Immunostainer that is used to diagnose cancer and C Difficile testing equipment. For further information contact Alisa Coquet, Director for Donor Relations, RIH Foundation at 250-314-2836. will be developed in partnership with the Kamloops Food Policy Council. The council works with local advocacy groups and organizations on a variety of projects to help strengthen the Kamloops region’s communityfood system. Shop, stay and play on the North Shore Well, we’ve put the first couple weeks of the Overlanders Bridge repairs behind us; and it’s been great to see people on the North Shore choosing to Shop, Stay and Play locally! For our businesses it will mark the beginning of the end of a long, costly period of disruptions that started with a transport’s load striking the north end overpass four years ago. By you choosing to shop local on the North Shore during this time you are keeping our businesses viable and healthy. The hardest part of the Overlanders Bridge construction is currently underway. The shutdown of the north side overpass for the next three weeks has really affected some of our businesses in the south end of the Tranquille Market corridor. We encourage you to try out A Cut Above beauty salon; have a sandwich, coffee or ice cream at Reubin’s Diner; check out the great lunch buffet at Dynasty Garden; or have some
great Italian food at Sorriso’s! We’re pretty blessed with the incredible variety of restaurants we have on the North Shore. They represent the rich cultural and ethnic heritage that built Brocklehurst and North Kamloops. We have three different sushi houses (Arigato, San Maru, Nara) eight Chinese food restaurants (Bamboo Inn, Barbeque Kitchen, Dynasty Garden, Lotus Inn, Lee’s Garden, Moon Wok, Oriental Express, Twin Phoenix) with Indian food at Spice of India, Taiwanese at Sunmei Cuisine, Thai food at Salajai and Xuan’s great servings of pho at the Donut King! If you are looking for the tastes of Asia – you’ll find them on the North Shore! If you have global tastes, the
North Shore has you covered. The Crazy and the German will leave you gleefully full with their authentic bratwurst sammel; get your island groove on at Jam Can Café with their Jamaican pulled specialties; and the pizza places! I love pizza and we have some of the best in town on this side of the bridge. You can also grab some more traditional Canadian fare at our family restaurants and pubs. This summer don’t spend your beautiful Kamloops sunshine days battling the bridge! Check out your local restaurants and Shop, Stay and Play on the North Shore! KYSA Scholarships to be awarded Graduating high school soccer players who are registered with the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) are eligible to apply for one of nine scholarships the association will be awarding in 2015. KYSA Scholarships are awarded to students proceeding from Grade 12 to a university or postsecondary institution approved by the KYSA Scholarship Awards Selection Committee and/or students already attending a post-secondary institute, but are registered with the KYSA for the 2015 season. This year, the KYSA will be awarding nine scholarships valued at $500 each. To qualify, an applicant for a KYSA Scholarship Award must have been registered in the association for three or more seasons, not necessarily consecutively. The nine awards and the donors are: McDonald’s Restaurants of Kamloops, Bank of Montreal, Wendy’s Restaurants of Kamloops, Hansport (Male and female), Errol Wild Family Memorial Scholarship, Forward Law
LLP, Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (Male and female). Additional information on the KYSA’s scholarship program and application forms are available on the association’s web site at kysa.net. Hard copies of the application form can also be obtained from the KYSA office on McArthur Island. KYSA Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on a variety of criteria, such as the applicant’s participation in school activities, their leadership qualities, sportsmanship and time spent volunteering with church or community organizations. Soccer talent is just one of the yardsticks the selectors use to determine the award recipients. A candidate’s contributions as a referee, coach or manager in the KYSA is also taken into consideration. Applications for this year’s KYSA Scholarship Awards must be received in the KYSA office by Monday, June 1st at 4:00pm. Please contact Keith Liddiard, Executive Director, KYSA: 250-376-2750 for more information.

Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) It’s time to look in the mirror and take inventory of what you see. You’ve been through a big change recently and there’s more to come but before the next step, pause for a moment and appreciate how far you’ve actually come. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Secret affairs begin to get cloudy. If you’re currently arguing with someone, ask yourself if you’ve provoked the encounter or if the other person has let stress get the best of them. In either case give love a chance to work things out. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Just when you thought you had something settled, confusion sets in to cloud the week. An award that you thought was yours might suddenly go to someone else. Don’t sweat it. In a couple of weeks that prize will be back in your hands. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Recent developments have you rethinking a career change and your public image. Don’t throw in the towel yet. You’re in a rebuilding phase so hit the books and study up. The chance you’ve been waiting for is coming. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Travel plans begin to unravel so make sure your papers are in order and your shots are up to date. It’s going to be fun but there will be lineups and delays. If you’re stuck in the city then get out, wander and explore. Love continues to impress at work. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) The confusion and double checking the details that’s happening to everyone this week occurs in your astrosector of shared property, joint finances, endings and possible beginnings. There’s a feeling of fate guiding you. Love is calling from a distance. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Your views on personal relationships are changing and with it comes a new and refreshing way of looking at the people around you. What you once thought impossible in love suddenly becomes very probable. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Bad habits have been getting the best of you and it’s time to let them go. Think of all of the money and time you will save if you could clean up just one of them. Your partner is looking at you for inspiration. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) It’s a playful and creative week but only if you let love take the lead. Ideas are changing and forcing old beliefs onto the new simply won’t work. Instead, pack your bag with all of your wits and enjoy the journey. An old project becomes new again. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) It feels like the entire world is changing around you and this is upsetting your inner balance and emotional grounding. Take some time to review you home base of operations and lay a new and solid foundation to spring ahead. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Misunderstandings will trouble the next couple of weeks. If you’re reviewing recent decisions give love a second chance. Your view will soften and you’ll appreciate when the sentiment is returned. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) It’s time to double check the bill. You may have been charged twice or maybe your order didn’t come in at all! It’s just Mercury retrograde asking you to have a closer look at your finances. You’re words are still softening hearts.
