A passion for pedaling and for paddling There are some of us out there who like to think that we are environmentally conscious and also active in our day-to-day lives. Local Steve Bloom puts us to shame, not only does he make conscious choices in his home to help support the environment, he also chooses to commute to work via running, biking or sometimes kayaking and on occasion using his unicycle. “I do all kinds of different things to get to work,” comments North Shore teacher Steve. “A couple times a year I paddle to work and home again. Or my wife, who is also a teacher, drops me off on her way to work and I just run home.” Steve’s commute from his home at the top of West Battle on Strathcona Terrace to Bert Edwards Science and Technology School is over six kilometers one way. At 61 this isn’t something new Steve has picked up, he has been commuting to work this way since he was 18-years-old. He has biked all the way out to Pacific Way Elementary and even out to David Thompson Elementary. “When I had to bike up to Pacific Way it was awful but the ride home was awesome,” adds Steve.

Steve Bloom is currently a teacher at the Bert Edwards Science School. He takes his passion for the environment and for being active to a whole new level. He has been biking, running, kayaking and unicycling to work for the past 43 years.

This isn’t just something Steve does in the warmer months; he

will be out there running to or from school in the dead of winter.

“I don’t bike in the winter. I run pretty much every day. I will bum a ride on really bad days,” Steve says. He will also take the bus if needed. Why does Steve do this? A couple of reasons: “I am very environmentally concerned and I always have to be busy and active. I am proud of the fact that I don’t contribute to automotive carbon loading. Also my exercise is done for the day.” The bike ride takes him about 20 minutes and the run is closer to 30 minutes. “I usually bring a change of running clothes with me to run home or I keep a change of work clothes at the school for when I run there.” What does Steve’s doctor think of his lifestyle? “He says I am pretty fit for an old guy,” jokes Steve. “My whole family has high blood pressure but I don’t.” This isn’t just a means of exercise for Steve, this is a way of life and a passion. “It’s hard to get the first step out of the door, but when you start you think ‘Geez I should do this more often,” adds Steve. “In the morning when I bike to work, it is a great way to start the day. I am just on fire for the first hour continues on page 2

Obnoxious odors may linger

Marigold Mile

The City of Kamloops Sewage Treatment Plant is currently in the final stages of construction and commissioning. As a result of this work, a large portion of the treatment facility is currently offline and less than optimal treatment is being recognized, which unfortunately may generate obnoxious odors. Over the May long weekend, weather patterns resulted in a concentration of this sewage smell in the lower elevations around Kamloops, particularly in the Brocklehurst area adjacent to the treatment plant. If weather patterns continue in a similar pattern, the

odors from the City lagoons may persist periodically over the next few days. A remedial team that specializes in these types of odor events is being mobilized and will start emergency treatment of the lagoon system early next week and it is expected to have the excessive smell under control by the middle of the week. The new sewage treatment plant will have several odor control processes in place once completed and online (anticipated for late June), so any smells from the plant are expected to be mitigated.

Dedication ceremony for Hall Marigold Mile along Tranquille Road by Singh Street has been restored to its full glory thanks to some helping hands on May 21.

New at Wilson House Gallery The Women in Bliss exhibit at the Wilson House Gallery opened on May 27 and will be on display until June 26. The opening reception is on Saturday May 31 from 1:30pm to 4:00pm. The intent of this exhibit is to capture and communicate, through visual images, the varied and authentic ways by which women experience and live their bliss. It is important that the project reflect both diversity and universality within these personally meaningful activities. The exhibit features local individuals, ranging in age from four to 92, engaged in her identified bliss. Jen Sheeley is an ever-evolving

and self-taught artist. The Women in Bliss exhibit is her first photography project born out of a desire to celebrate the multitude of ways in which females within her community experience and engage in personally meaningful activities. Jen’s training as an occupational therapist is reflected in her interest of how people derive purpose in their daily lives. Amanda Barker became a photographer through her work as a doula. She found that being an invisible observer at births was the most natural way she knew of documenting emotion and events in the most authentic way possible.

In honour of the Kamloops Sports Council’s late General Manager, Wayne Hall, a public dedication ceremony will be held on June 26, at 6:00 pm at the Kamloops Sports Council office located at Cunliffe House, 262 Lorne Street. A memorial plaque will be unveiled during the ceremony in

recognition of Wayne’s extensive contributions to not only the Kamloops Sports Council, but the Kamloops sports community as a whole. There will also be a tree planting in celebration of Wayne’s life. For more information please contact the Kamloops Sports Council at 250-828-3822.

Carbon footprint conscious educator - continued from front of work when everyone is still half asleep.” This is a story about a man on a mission to just stay active and use his own body to get to work every day. “Every school I have gone to I ride to and before you know it, there are three or four other people who start riding,” Steve comments. “There are currently four of us riding at this school. It is just a matter of

doing it.” So this week if you are contemplating whether you should participate in Bike to Work Week, think of Steve. He has been biking/running/kayaking/ unicycling to work for 43 years. Let that soak in for a minute; his carbon footprint is miniscule comparatively. So get those bikes out Kamloops, grease them up and cruise. Ashley Demedeiros

BUSINESS PROFILE

Mayfair is a community built for seniors

Mayfair Manor a part of the RiverBend Seniors Community is in its final stages. This well anticipted addition to the community will provide even more services and opportunities for seniors looking for affordable housing and a sense of community.

Over the last few years there have been many new senior community residences that have popped up in Kamloops. One of the most recent being the RiverBend Seniors Community located on the shores of the South Thompson River, in North Kamloops at 760 Mayfair Street. This state-of-the-art facility is only three years old. New to the site is the addition of Mayfair at RiverBend. Within this new building are units, referred to as Mayfair Manor, designated as supported living and managed by Oncore Central Services. Cindy Linton, general manager of RiverBend Manor is excited about the new facility augmenting the already well developed community. “It is currently 98 per cent finished and is scheduled to open in July,” adds Cindy. At Mayfair Manor there are 20 supported living units available. “We provide

three meals a day, housekeeping, all the utilities are included, along with recreation and laundry facilities,” Cindy comments. There are also 80 units available to be rented or sold which are self contained independent living apartments at Mayfair. Both the RiverBend and Mayfair buildings are conveniently located on the end of Mayfair Street (just off of Tranquille Road). Combined, they extend a physical and natural setting that has been created specifically for seniors. Level pathways professionally landscaped and maintained connect Mayfair to RiverBend and offer easy access to shared patios and gardens, the river’s edge and nearby Rivers Trail. It’s easy to come and go as you please with ground level parking, scooter storage and easily accessed pedestrian and scooter routes to nearby shops and ser-

vices. “We are all one big happy community here,” says Cindy. “All common things are shared amongst the community. RiverBend and Mayfair complement each other.” Supported living opportunities at RiverBend Manor or at Mayfair Manor is about so much more than a place to live. It’s about becoming part of a community that supports independence and creates opportunities to socialize. Within the Manor, the cost of the apartment’s rent is based on the income of the renter. “As a non-profit society we are able to offer very affordable rates,” adds Cindy. “Also we are close to the Cooper’s, Brock Mall and right along the river which is really a beautiful setting.” If you would like to learn more please feel free to contact them at 250-376-6536 for more information. River use advisory due to high water levels Due to high water levels, swift currents and heavy debris in the North and South Thompson River, Kamloops RCMP are issuing an advisory to all users of these waterways. Boating or swimming in any area where there is direct current flow is not recommended at this time. The present conditions on these waterways create a significant risk for vessel damage and for personal injury or death in the event of capsize or personal exposure to the direct currents in the river. These same conditions also increase the risk for rescue personnel who may be called upon to provide assistance to stranded vessels or individuals caught in fast moving currents. Two items of particular note are the exceptional amount of debris in the North Thompson at this time and the very low clearance level at the CN Rail Bridge behind Interior Savings Centre. Extreme caution should be exercised around this train bridge due to the high water level.

Daily assessments are being made of the water volumes in both of these rivers. The latest predictions are that the levels

may begin to fall within the next 36 hours but this is completely weather dependent, therefore is subject to change. Any boat

operators and water enthusiasts who are contemplating use of the waterways are asked to exercise caution and good judgment.

echo stargazer GEMINI (May 22-June 21) The cosmic accent is on communications, scheduling, education and short trips (either in distance or in time). This new moon brings to you a fresh influx of energy. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Mercury travels through your sign between May 29 and June 16. It will turn retrograde on June 7 and re-cross old territory. You may do the same. During this period there likely will be greater emphasis on communications, errands, and other short distance travels. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You have a busy and fairly complicated week. You may be disappointed in the sector that rules taxes, debts, or investments. Meanwhile, you have positive outcomes in the sector that rules travel, communications, siblings or roommates. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) You are finishing a work project and shifting gears into new territory this week. You will be focusing on communications with friends, acquaintances and building your network. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You are concluding a project or even a relationship situation. The mood is upbeat and happy. There are favourable omens related to travel, the Internet, education, publishing, or the law. It is a good time to write something that has been on your mind for a while. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 –Nov. 22) You have a sense of physical strength at this time that will be especially beneficial if you are exercising or in any type of competition. Work that uses your large muscles will have a soothing and pleasant effect when you rest. You may be the beneficiary of small gifts or tokens of esteem from others who care about you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Your mood is expansive and optimistic this week. It is one of those “good luck” times that occasionally happen to the Archers. You have a grasp of the big picture and could use this energy to promote your projects and gain support. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) Our culture has an unhealthy game called guilt versus anger. There is a requirement that must be met and you are pegged as the rescuer. If you don’t adopt the role, you will feel a sense of social guilt. But when you do, there is anger underneath the action because after all, why should you be required to do this thing? AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You are still in the after-glow of the Jupiter trine Saturn aspect (exact last week). You are reaping benefits of a work well done during this period. Perhaps there has been an experience that makes this very clear. You or your team is on the winning side because you have done your homework thoroughly. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Something unnoticed related to your home or property may suddenly break through your consciousness with a need of repair. It may be in the pipes or related to water. If not physical property, you may discover that your relationship to a family member is not what you thought. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) This is a fine week to run a race or climb a mountain. But save some time to attend to your significant other. Your communications are open and honest, just the right combination to work things out. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Venus, your ruling planet, enters your sign on May 28 and will be with you through June 22. You always have an interest in beauty and this transit notches it upward by a couple of pegs. You may redecorate yourself with new glasses, clothing, or hairstyle.
