BC SPCA City Challenge competition heats up for May The Kamloops and district branch of the BC SPCA is preparing for the May City Challenge and the second annual FurBall Gala! This event is perhaps the most anticipated in all the City Challenge competitions. The City Challenge is back and this year boasts a full month of events to benefit homeless animals in Kamloops and Prince George. The two communities are competing against each other once again and the competition promises to be fierce. After all, bragging rights are high stakes and full rights will be granted to the one who raises the most cash for their local SPCA. “Kamloops and Prince George haven’t faced off since 2005, when of course Kamloops won,” says Risa Leake, assistant manager of the Kamloops SPCA branch. “Like a dog before a flea treatment, Prince George is itching to win the rematch but they really shouldn’t get their hopes up”. Risa may talk tough but it is all in good fun because the true winners are the animals in both communities. The theme of this year’s City Challenge, which runs from May 1 to 31, is “Old Rivals Meet Again.” The event officially kicked off on May 1 with a barbecue and silent auction at the Kamloops shelter, 1211 8th St., from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Mayor Peter Milobar was on hand to help get things started and offer words of encouragement to local animal lovers.

Contestants for 2015 “Pet of the Ball” can be viewed and voted for at the FurBall Gala with many new categories.

The official launch will also include a free draw for an oversized stuffed animal, a cheque presentation and raffle tickets for a motorized Yamaha scooter from Schultz Motorsports. “But that’s not all,” stresses Risa. “This is a monthlong challenge so we’ve got activities going on throughout May.” The second annual FurBall Gala is the key event in the challenge this year and will be held on May 9

at the Coast Conference Hotel and Conference Centre. Last year’s inaugural event was the crowning triumph that enabled Kamloops to annihilate Prince George in the City Challenge, which admittedly was a great comeback from the loss in 2013. “We’re counting on the FurBall Gala to allow us to reach our fundraising goals for the City Challenge,” invites Michelle Virdee,

vice chairperson of the Community Council and one of the main coordinators for the FurBall Gala. “Not only does our shelter benefit greatly from the funds we raise but we are thrilled to be celebrating our successes in such a fun event. On top of all the great things we had last year, we also have a trip raffle and each guest will take home a swag bag full of fun free products - continued on page 2

FurBall Gala — pinnacle of City Challenge – continued from page 1 and services. One of those bags will contain a voucher/ certificate for a beautiful barbeque valued at $1200.00.” Tickets are still available but going fast. Interest in the Furball Gala is high this year and Michelle suggests people order soon or miss out on this animal lover’s celebration. This year tickets are available at spcafurball.bpt.me and all money raised at the FurBall Gala remains in the Kamloops area. Guests are requested an emailed photo of their family pets to be used in the décor and for the “Pet of the Ball” contest to be held at the FurBall Gala. The winning pets’ photo will be proudly displayed in the BCSPCA Kamloops shelter as the 2015 Pets of the Ball recipient. Please email pet pictures to kamloopsevents@ spca.bc.ca. New categories for different species of pets have been added this year to include four different pets to be chosen, aptly named “Purrfect Friends”, “Wagging Tails”, “Feathers, Fins and Fuzzies” and “Barnyard Buddies”. Some of the other activities currently planned for the City Challenge include a book sale and various community barbeque events all around Kamloops. The book sale will be held from May 16 to 23 at the Northills Mall. Dona-

tions can be dropped off at the mall between May6 and 15 in the bin in front of the old Fabricland store and may include books, puzzles or DVD’s. Please do not bring donations to the shelter due to lack of space to store them. On Saturday, May 15, the public is invited to the BC SPCA and Hill’s Science Diet Open House at the Kamloops shelter from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The family-focused event includes a barbecue, children’s games and prizes, a bouncy house for kids and special guests of the furry and four-legged kind from the shelter. Hill’s Science Diet, which generously donates all the food for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at BC SPCA shelters across the province, offers a free bag of food with every adoption. On May 29, there is a final Roundup event at the Kamloops Walmart store. There will be a barbecue and raffle ticket sale, and Radio NL will be broadcasting from the store location. Then on May 31 from 5:00 pm

on, a pub night fundraiser is set for the Fox’n Hounds pub located at 945 Columbia Street West. Ticket price includes a scrumptious dinner and there will also be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction. Other groups and businesses that want to help animals with their own event are encouraged to call the shelter at 250-376-7722 to coordinate their efforts. The City Challenge has a tendency to create a little friendly competition and Kamloops has proven time and again that this city knows how to pull together to make a difference. The BC SPCA fundraising goal for Kamloops in the City Challenge is $40,000. “This will go a long way toward improving the lives of animals in our community,” says Risa. “Our branch alone cares for 1,700 animals a year, and we couldn’t do that without the support of so many people.” Help the Kamloops branch of the BC SPCA help more homeless animals in the Kamloops community. Your gift could save a life. Trina Budai

City updates its Food Trucks program restaurants. Additional changes to food trucks regulations for 2015 include: allowing food trucks on private property in the Tranquille Market Street District; at the Kamloops Airport; and in an expanded range of industrial areas (subject to approval by property owners). The proposed changes come through input gathered from Business Improvement Associations and food truck operators that participated in the 2014 pilot project. The intention of the changes is to provide increased opportunity for food vending in the City without adversely impacting area restaurants. Specific operating criteria for interested food vendors can be obtained by contacting the City of Kamloops Business License office at blicensed@kamloops.ca or 250-828-3481.

For the 2015 season, the On-Street Food Trucks Program will focus on encouraging vendors to provide great food at the City’s beautifully landscaped Gaglardi Square. Up to two standard-sized food trucks may be permitted to operate at the same time at this Seymour Street location weekdays, while one truck may be permitted weekends. Earlier set-up hours (9:00 am weekdays, and 7:00 am weekends) provide opportunity for increased food service at this location. The City’s removal of the on-street vending locations at Victoria Street and 5th Avenue is intended to protect bricks-and-mortar restaurants on Victoria Street. This goal is also advanced by the City’s bylaw requirement that food trucks operating on private property maintain a 50-metre setback from existing

RCMP enlist Alexa’s Bus

Once again Kamloops RCMP will have the use of Alexa’s Bus to enhance their enforcement on impaired drivers. This mobile unit contains all the equipment required to collect evidence and process the impaired drivers efficiently and effectively at roadside locations. It eliminates the need to transport persons back to the detachment to conduct the tests and seek legal advice. Alexa’s bus would not have come to be without the support of ICBC, MADD, the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation, Road Safety Partners and community supporters who donated to the campaign. Citizens can expect to see the bus out at road checks and community events over the next week.

Fifty bucks is fifty bucks Buddy and his wife Edna went to the fair every year, and every year Buddy would say, “Edna, I’d like to ride in that helicopter.” Edna always replied, “I know Buddy, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks.” One year Buddy and Edna went to the fair, and Buddy said, “Edna, I’m 85 years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.” To this, Edna replied, “Buddy that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks.” The pilot overheard the couple and said, “Folks I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the

The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word. When they landed, the pilot turned to Buddy and said, “By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t. I’m impressed!” Buddy replied, “Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Edna fell out, but you know, fifty bucks is fifty bucks!”

The bridge deck is currently down to two lanes (one in each direction) for the duration of the project. The traffic signal timings at the south end of the bridge have been adjusted accordingly to accommodate traffic flow. The Tranquille Road entry ramp onto the bridge will remain closed to regular traffic, with priority access for emergency vehicles, transit and school buses. A 30 km/hr speed limit is in effect throughout the construction zone, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

The Tranquille Road exit ramp and Fortune Drive overpass are scheduled to be closed starting the week of May 4 for approximately 4 weeks. Once this closure is in effect, the traffic signal at Leigh Road and Fortune Drive will be adjusted as follows: - A left turn arrow will be implemented for north bound traffic turning off Fortune Drive onto Leigh Road; and - A right turn arrow will be implemented for traffic turning south bound off Leigh Road onto Fortune Drive. The best way to decrease traffic congestion is to decrease traffic:

Plan ahead. Use alternate routes. Carpool, bike, walk or take transit. For weekly traffic updates and the live bridge cam, visit

Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) It might have begun with something simple but it set the wheels in motion and the change is now obvious. Not only do you look and feel different but recent events have also given you a new vision on how you fit into the bigger picture. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Yes, your energy is low, and the behind the scenes battle might still bring a few surprises but you’re almost out of the woods and the future is looking bright. New faces are smiling and enticing you to take a chance. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’d love to lend a helping hand but make sure it’s on your terms. Saying yes one too many times will actually close a door you hoped would stay open. Get out into your world and say hello. An old lover returns your message. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Work is beginning to push more than just your buttons but rewards are waiting if you can stay out of trouble. Get out with friends and tell them your problems. It’s still a good time to buy a lottery ticket. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Luck is still flowing behind the scenes in secret affairs and relationships. If someone tries to sneak something past you, they’ll be caught. Take the high road and simply do your best to be your best. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A financial wish comes true with the help of someone from a distance. It’ll leave you wondering why you didn’t give a stranger a better chance. This week will restore your faith in yourself and hopefully your confidence in love. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You’re a loving sign with a lot to give but this week love simply asks for too much. Set your boundaries and make them stick. You’ve finally realized the waiting game is the same as going it alone. Be the love you’d like to receive. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Love brings unexpected rewards but patience is required to accept them. You’ll second guess a decision but the opportunity has already expired. Sudden changes in your bank balance leave you with a smile. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Resist the urge to force a creative effort onto the team. Your ideas are being noticed and accepted but it’s going to take time to implement them. Push hard at the gym. You’ll want to look your best when love smiles back. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) The new job becomes official and although it’ll take you away from home, it’ll also reveal unexpected opportunities. A playful attitude can transform someone close into more than just a friend. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Hidden within a group of new friends is a game changer that will help clear nagging hurdles. Difficult decisions will require soft words. You’ll still be seen as the bad guy but decision made out of love will be accepted peacefully. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) A positive change has the corporate ladder calling your name. The bosses see you as a responsible and hard working leader who’s especially skilled at working the books. Be the first in with money saving ideas and rewards will follow.
