Fur Ball to celebrate second chances for furry friends It’s time to get out your best dress and suit, Kamloops! The Kamloops SPCA is hosting a Fur Ball fundraiser on May 23 at the Coast Hotel and Conference Centre starting at 6:30pm. This night of exquisite cuisine, dazzling entertainment, an impressive silent auction and fun dancing is to help raise money for the local animal shelter. The FurBall is about giving animals second chances at having a happy and healthy forever home. All you have to do is purchase a ticket and bring in a photo of your pet. Please indicate if your pet or pets are SPCA Alumni. If you are not able to attend or are not an ‘event person’ you can purchase a non-attending ticket to help support the cause. Tax receipts for these tickets will be issues for this donation. Judy Basso, of Judy Basso Events and Décor, is excited to be helping out this special event. “I know how much animals mean to people,” adds Judy. “This is a fun and unique way to help our furry friends and celebrate second chances.” She is planning the night of diamonds and dogs, caviar and cats to be a fun filled night and hopefully a lot of money will be raised to help the shelter to keep doing the inspiring work it does. SPCA Kamloops Branch manager, Charlene Holloway is heart

warmed by the support Kamloops has shown to the shelter. “The Fur Ball is going to be a special and fun night. We love animals and are excited to have a night to honour just them,” Charlene adds. She hopes that the ball will not only bring awareness to the needs of the shelter and the animals that use it, but it will be one of the major social events of the year. The Fur Ball is part of a larger cause, the BCSPCA City Challenge, which started on May 1 and goes until May 31. Kamloops is in competition with Prince George to see who can raise the most money. The Fur Ball is one of many events that are raising money for the local shelter, all of which will stay in the Kamloops community. It is the goal of the Kamloops branch to raise $40,000. To do this, there will be various events around the community such as the book sale at the Northhills Mall from May 10 to 17, a dog wash on May 24 at River City Nissan from 11:00am to 1:00pm and of course they will be taking donations and even bottles at the centre at 1211 8th Street. “The City Challenge is a great event to bring awareness and raise money, however I would love to have the bragging rights of beating Prince George,” comments Charlene. “People can just come to one - continued on page 2

Mini Comic-Con to showcase local talent The TNRD Library System’s Kamloops Library is hosting its second Mini Comic-Con. The event, which happens Saturday, May 10, starting at 2:00 pm., features an appearance by two well-established comicbook artists, as well as fun art and costume contests that offer prizes. Open to teens 13 to 18 years old, the Mini Comic-Con will be highlighted by the appearance of two graphic artists: Vancouver-based manga artist Nina Matsumoto,

a.k.a. “Space Coyote,” and Bongo Comics’ John Delaney. Matsumoto and Delaney, with some help from High Octane Comics, will also act as judges for the Mini Comic-Con’s art contest. Budding artists are encouraged to create an original 2-D art piece in comic or manga style on any topic (keep it clean!) and in any media. Contestants are asked to keep the size of their artwork to a maximum of 18 inches by 24 inches for display purposes. Entries should be

dropped off at the Children’s Desk at Kamloops Library by Wednesday, May 7, at 5:00 pm. All art will be displayed in the library and judging will take place the day of the event. Winners will be announced that day, too, with first prize supplied by High Octane Comics. There will also be an entry selected as a fan favourite. And attendees are reminded to dress up as well, as there will be a prize for best costume.

The Conservation Officer Service is requesting the public’s assistance in their investigation into the illegal killing of nine eagles in the Kamloops area. Eight Bald Eagles and one Golden Eagle were found in March with their heads, feet, tail feathers and wings removed. The eagle carcasses were discovered in a ditch near a well-used public road. Under the Wildlife Act, it is an offence to possess, take, injure, or destroy an eagle or its eggs, or the nests when occupied by an eagle or egg. The Conservation Officer Service is currently investigating to find those responsible. If the public has any information, they are asked to call the Report all Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877952-7277 or online at: env.gov. bc.ca/cos/rapp/form.htm. The BC Wildlife Federation pay rewards up to $5,000 for information leading to the conviction of persons who have violated laws related to the protection of fish, wildlife or the environment.

Phone scam claims to be RCMP

Kamloops RCMP has been made aware of a scam where the caller has stated he is with the “revenue department of the RCMP.” The caller threatens to have you arrested and deported from Canada if you don’t immediately transfer money to an account. The caller may also make reference to

Canada Revenue Agency and can become very intimidating over the phone. All efforts to trace the origin of the call have revealed that it is associated to a company that provides a service where users can utilize their Internet as a phone. These calls could be originating from anywhere

worldwide and would be very difficult to trace. Fortunately, in the two instances that were reported locally, nobody participated. RCMP would like to notify the public that this is a scam, and that you should hang up immediately, without providing any personal information.

Planting initiatives offered to community

Are you looking for a way to help improve the look of your property? The City has other tree planting incentives for residents. For more information or to apply to participate in any of these programs, please visit kamloops.ca/trees. You can participant in the Aspen Trees program which is used to restore visual screening where there has been a significant loss

of trees due to pine beetle infestation and increasing wildfire protection to residential homes, the City will provide aspen trees to qualified homeowners if they agree to irrigate and care for these trees. The Boulevard Tree Planting program is a program that allows neighbourhoods to apply for trees to be planted on their street if homeowners agree

to be responsible for irrigating them. There is also the Kamloops Community Forest program. This is a Communities in Bloom Legacy Project where people can dedicate a memorial or celebratory tree in the area set aside between Riverside Park and Pioneer Park and in other park areas.

Fun for the whole family at XFest After a very long winter, Project X Theatre is looking forward to a fresh breeze. What’s better than outdoor theater and a hot Kamloops summer? Newly-appointed co-artistic producers Melissa Thomas and Heather can’t will continue to make X Fest a family-friendly favourite for the City of Ka-

mloops. They are thrilled to be able to lead a new generation of theatregoers down the rabbit hole for the first time with a new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Also, The Last of the Dragons is adapted for young audiences. Artists involved in X Fest

2014 are a mix of newcomers and X Fest favourites. These two colour, madcap productions will be a fresh, fun, outdoor activity for the whole family to enjoy together! X fest will run in Prince Charles Park from July 23 to August 9.

A $50,000 grant from the Ministry of Health will assist the Mountain Resort Municipality of Sun Peaks determine the viability of an expanded health-care centre, Minister Terry Lake announced. “The Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, Sun Peaks Health Association and the community have been working hard at promoting their vision of an expanded health centre for families, residents and tourists,” says Terry. “This funding will help outline the business case for an expanded health centre.” As the local and tourist communities continue to grow, the Sun Peaks Health Association and municipality want to ensure they are proactively planning to meet long-term needs. The Sun Peaks service area includes Whitecroft, Louis Creek Valley and Heffley Lake and the population varies greatly from season to season due to visitors and seasonal employees, from 400 permanent residents year round to over 5,000 in the winter. The municipality will match the $500,000 that the Sun Peaks Health Association has raised

Volunteering is the ultimate gift to those in need There are many organizations and events around the community, which are currently looking for volunteers. Take a look at the volunteerkamloops.org website and see how you can help out. The AIM Foundation of Canada is looking for onsite event volunteers for the Richard Wagamese ‘Power of Storytelling’ presentation. Volunteers are needed to help out for the Richard Wagamese ‘Power of Storytelling’ on May 10 from 5:00 pm or as scheduled. Positions: audience seating, front door, parking, AIM Canada information table,

photography assistant, setup/cleanup and more. The volunteers will be responsible for attending an orientation meeting prior to the event. You will be volunteering at the Calvary Community Church. You need to be 18+ to volunteer. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is currently seeking highly energetic, passionate, and outgoing volunteer canvassers to be the face of CCS during the residential Door to Door Daffodil Month Canvasser campaign in April. The Door to Door campaign has been a staple of the CCS’ fundraising efforts since

1948. Thousands of volunteer canvassers participate in this campaign in communities across Canada because they believe passionately in the mission of the CCS to eradicate cancer and support those who are living with the disease. You only need to be 15+ to vol-

unteer and families are welcome to volunteer as well. The reward for volunteering your time is priceless. Take the opportunity to make a difference in our community. For these and many other volunteer opportunities please call 250372-8313.

Hunger awareness Starting on May 5 until May 9 is the Kamloops Food Bank Hunger Awareness Week. This awareness is part of a national campaign put on by Food Banks Canada. Food banks across the country hold events to

tell the story of the work they do, and the stories of hungry Canadians assisted by food banks. To help be a part of the solution to hunger in our community, contact the Food Bank at 250-376-2252.

Non-speeder incident

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding For more information contact Scott Fisher: drivers, a State Police Officer sees scott@discoverwellnessinmotion.com or 250-378-9883 a car puttering along at 22MPH. He thinks to himself, “this driver is just as dangerous as a speedScott Fisher_1.8.indd 1 14-05-05 11:56 AM www.kamloopssymphony.com er!”. So he turns on his lights and May 3 – 10, 2014 pulls the driver over. 5/4/14 6:36 PM Approaching the car, he notices that there are five very old ladies. Two in the front seat and three in the back - wide-eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him “Officer, I don’t understand. I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?” “Ma’am” says the officer, “You 2 performances weren’t speeding but you should know that driving slower than the Friday, May 9, 2014 speed limit can also be a danger to 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm other drivers”.

“Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly...twenty-two miles per hour!” the old woman says, a bit proudly. The State Police Officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that “22” was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the police officer for pointing out her error. “But before I let you go Ma’am, I have to ask....is everyone in this car ok? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven’t uttered a single peep this whole time,” the officer asks. “Oh, they will be alright in a minute officer, we just got off Route 119”.

echo stargazer TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Make note of the lead paragraph because both oppositions pertain to you at this time. You are being tested or you are judging in more than one situation. If you back out you have definitely lost. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Mercury travels rapidly through your sign between May 7 and May 30. During this period there likely will be greater emphasis on communications, errands, and other short distance travels. Your mind will be quick and your attitude persuasive. CANCER (June 22-July 22) You have a desire to reach outward to others. You want to share ideas and express yourself in a larger framework. It seems everyone is interested in what you think. Circumstances on the home front are favorable with one who shares intellectual interests. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) This is a week of scrutiny. It is possible that you are being tested now. You will get what you deserve. If you have prepared well, you will win the prize or the honor. You may have begun a challenging project during the previous fall which is now ready for unveiling and evaluation. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Your attention turns toward your life direction at this time. For many this is reflected by the career path. You may be researching needed information or talking with others about where you are headed. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You may be backpedaling your way out of one or more relationships right now. What you fear is being smothered or overwhelmed. Your ruling planet, Mars, is retrograde. Be aware that the war is really internal. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You may have an experience in which you feel a figurative sniper at your back. Defend yourself if you absolutely must, but life will be easier if you ignore it. Your sniper will not recognize it, even if you point it out and the confrontation may become embarrassing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You have a desire to celebrate. The temptation to overspend is strong. Consider what would be fun and interesting that doesn’t require a big expenditure. Activities concerning education, publishing, the law and travel have positive aspects. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) During this period the fruits of your labors become apparent. People will be offering messages to you about your character and how you have progressed over the years. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Last fall you began a new project in relation to your work in the world. You knew it would take some time to develop, but you felt it was worth the effort. During this period you will have feedback from the world on the value of that idea. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) A misunderstanding could develop between you and a close friend or family member. The blame game is useless. Do your best to unwind the thread to the point that it began and start fresh. It is possible that you will have a minor case of laryngitis. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Within relationships of intensity, there is often a strong sexual attraction, whether or not your personalities are compatible. If the sexual component is not recognized, it may be transmuted into a competition. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Vivian Carol. For daily horoscopes go to horoscopesbyvivian.com
