Indoor fun at the Big Little Science Centre Once upon a time in a little room in David Thompson Elementary was the Big Little Science Centre that could. The journey of scientific discovery started by the fabulous Gordon Gore, a retired Westsyde High School Science teacher, has grown exponentially since its inception and today occupies nearly half of the former Happyvale School at 665 Holt Street here on the North Shore. For those who have never visited the centre, you are missing out! Almost every kid in the school district has some experience with the science centre. Whether on a discovery field trip with school, a trip with parents on the weekends, or enrollment in one of their diverse array of clubs and camps, kids love to visit. They make learning fun and adventurous, so much so that most of their visitors don’t even realize they are soaking up science theory and knowledge. There are three selfguided hands-on science rooms filled with more than 140 different stations. Visitors of all ages (myself included) love to drop marbles, yell into foam, try to balance puzzles and much, much more. In addition to the areas of self-discovery they also host a wide Visitors to the Big Little Science variety of special events Centre try out some hands-on and shows that are open science. Don’t miss (top, right) to the public. December Gordon Gore’s natural history is no disappointment, as photo montage presentation! they have a full schedule of activities planned geared towards the whole family. Susan Hammond, assistant operator, Big Little Science Centre is particularly looking forward to Gordon Gore’s Nature Studies from a Golf Cart on Saturday, November 22 at 10:30am “The talk by Gordon Gore will be a real highlight as he has now retired and doesn’t present often anymore,” she says. “It is a photo montage of the natural history of the Dunes Golf Course in Westsyde. great photos of nature and birds. In particular you will follow the life at an osprey nest from before birth to fledging. Gordon Gore, who is the founder of the Big Little Science Centre and hands on educator extraordinaire, is also deservedly known for his amazing photographic talent. This is a free lecture and will not only include beautiful photographs, but will provide an opportunity for you to pick up some tips on how to improve your skills.” In addition to Gordon’s talk, each Saturday in November features something unique and interesting. This Saturday, November 15 there is a Forces and Motion show at both 11:00am and 1:30pm, a Static Electricity show on November 22 at 1:30pm and a Magnetism show on November 29 at both 11:00am and 1:30pm. “The exploration rooms are always open with cool exhibits from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm,” continues Susan. “Each week our special Saturday shows will teach you something different. This Saturday you will learn how a force is a push or a pull. Together we Photos courtesy of Big Little Science Centre. will try out different forces to discover the motion they cause. Some actions are more explosive than others!” As the cold weather is rolling in there is no better time to head inside and catch a fantastic science show. There are not enough words to explain the world of wonder that the Big Little Science Centre will provide and just how much fun you will have while learning. More information about the Big Little Science Centre can be found at their website – blscs.org or by phone at 250-554-2572. They are located in the former Happyvale School at 665 Holt Street. At a sold-out crowd of 440 at the Coast Kamloops Conference Centre on Saturday, November 1st, the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and TD presented 17 star awards to the winners of the 2014 Business Excellence Awards. This year marks the 29th consecutive year that the Chamber has held this event for the Kamloops business community. “We couldn’t be more proud of our vibrant business community,” states Kamloops Chamber Board of Directors president Aleece Laird. “We extend our sincere congratulations to all of the finalists and award winners for their outstanding achievements. These businesses truly exemplify the incredible work ethic and spirit our community is so known for.” “TD is thrilled to partner with the Business Excellence Awards in Kamloops again this year,” says premiere sponsor Lindy Baird, branch manager of TD. “As an organization that is committed to helping small business customers invest, innovate and grow, we congratulate the recipients of tonight’s awards.” A record number, a total of 468
nominations, were received from the Kamloops community. Winners for 15 of the awards were chosen by an independent selection committee. Construction begins on new surgical services area at RIH Construction has begun on a new operating room and related support areas at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) that, once complete, will provide Kamloops-area patients with enhanced access to surgical services. While the project revolves around the addition of an operating theatre to the current surgical unit at RIH, the renovation also encompasses services and space that support surgical procedures. There will be upgrades to Biomedical Engineering and Respiratory areas at RIH, as well as the addition of four beds for use after surgery, in the Post-Anesthetic Recovery area. New equipment will outfit the new OR, and a new equipment storage area will be created on the surgical unit through a conversion of existing space dedicated to the operating suites. The new OR will be designated for elective procedures, and will become the ninth OR at the hospital. Of the current ORs, seven are for elective surgeries and one is reserved for emergency surgeries. Each elective theatre can perform four to five procedures per day, depending on the
surgery. Construction will be completed in four phases. The first phase is just under way and will involve work in the Post-Anesthetic Recovery, Biomedical Engineering and Respiratory areas. Future phases include renova-
tions to the scrub room and storage areas, and finally, the new OR itself. The RIH Foundation is currently fundraising for the equipment that will be housed in the new OR. “We are honoured to be a part of such an important project for Royal Inland
TCC Working Towards Zero Waste The waste audit underway at the City of Kamloops Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) is the first of three phases that will be occurring at the facility as the City works towards its Zero Waste Initiative, where resources are conserved and recovered rather than being buried in a landfill. With over a million TCC visitors a year, the waste audit will provide the City with valuable information to better understand what waste is being generated, how much is generated and where it is generated. To date the waste audit was not disclosed to the public in order to get a more truthful idea of generated waste. That changed as of November 7 as the waste audit is front and centre outside of the TCC main entrance. Waste Naught BC is the contractor who has been conducting the waste audit. Owner Marcia Dick stated, “Conducting a waste audit at TCC has been a challenging process due to all of the different user groups at the facility, however the goal of zero waste is achievable with the support of the public taking that conscious step”.
Hospital,” said Heidi Coleman, CEO of the RIH Foundation. “It’s rewarding for our donors to see their contributions turn into something so vital for our hospital and community.” For more information about the campaign visit rihfoundation.ca.
Phase two will commence in early 2015 and will include the unveiling of new diversion tools and education platforms at TCC including composters, zero waste stations, and staff and public education. The third and final phase of the Zero Waste Initiative will occur in late 2015. It will include a follow-up waste audit to see how much progress has been made towards zero waste. “The City of Kamloops Sustainable Kamloops Plan has various measures of success including reducing solid waste landfilled to 0.3 tonnes per capita by 2020, as compared to the 2007 baseline year of 0.6 tonnes per capita. This Zero Waste Initiative directly supports that sustainability goal,” stated Jeff Putnam, Parks and Civic Facilities manager.. The long term goal will be to work towards zero waste at every City-owned facility. Tournament Capital Centre users can help achieve the goal of zero waste by looking for the new zero waste stations in 2015, sorting their waste into the proper bins, and helping to eliminate their personal waste by Rethinking, Reducing, Reusing and Recycling!

KYSA takes over Soccer Dome The Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) has agreed to a two-year lease agreement to manage the Kamloops Soccer Dome in the Mt. Paul Industrial area. The decision to take on the lease was made to ensure there is a facility of the size of the Dome with an appropriate field surface available to the soccer community in Kamloops for the foreseeable future. The KYSA has just begun it’s winter indoor programming with the kick-off of a new “Game Nights” feature which involves KYSA players aged nine to 18 playing in non-competitive games
Monday through Thursday evenings between the hours of 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Starting Friday November 14, and running through the winter, will be a series of player development programs for players in various age groups who wish to continue polishing their skills under the tutelage of KYSA staff coaches. In addition to KYSA programming, the Dome will be the home of the Whitecaps FC’s Winter Prospects Academy starting November 17, adult co-ed and women’s indoor soccer leagues as of November 9, the Brocklehurst
Middle School Soccer Academy, and numerous other events such as the annual Ski Swap and Boat Show. An expanded series of BC Soccer Coaching Courses will also be held in the Dome starting in the New Year and a number of other sports groups will be using the facility for their programs. In addition to the programming taking place in the Dome, the KYSA has player development sessions for the U5 to U8 age groups ongoing at the Twin Rivers Education Centre and Lloyd George Elementary on weeknights through the winter months.

Blithe Spirit takes over Stage House Theatre The Kamloops Players second show of the 2014/2015 season is one of Noel Coward’s bestknown comedy/farces, Blithe Spirit. Written in 1941, after his London office and apartment had been destroyed by German bombs, playwright Noel Coward felt the public would want something amusing and escapist during the dark days of the war. Coward wrote Blithe Spirit, a satirical comedy about ghosts. It is said that he wrote the play in less than a week. Since its premiere in the West End of London in 1941, Blithe Spirit has also played successfully on Broadway and has been adapted for film, television and radio. Blithe Spirit is directed by Linda Bezooyen, produced by Tammi Rose and stage managed by newcomer to the Play-
ers, Elaine Barry. It features Andrew Bezooyen in the lead role of ‘Charles Condomine’, Kimberly Arklie as his current wife, ‘Ruth Condomine’, and Shannon Collum as his long deceased wife, ‘Elvira Condomine’. Jessie Thomas plays the eccentric psychic, ‘Madame Arcati’. Laurel Brewer takes on the role of ‘Dr. George Bradman’ with Darcy Gorrill playing his naïve wife, ‘Violet Bradman’. ‘Edith’, the Condomine’s new inept maid is being played by another newcomer to the Players, Marta Oraniewicz. Blithe Spirit runs at the Stage House Theatre, 422 Tranquille Road, December 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Showtime is 7:30pm. Matinees run December 7 and 14 at 1:00pm. Patient’s journey showcased For the last six years, a partnership between the City of Kamloops and Interior Health has helped hundreds of Kamloops residents with chronic diseases better manage their health challenges through guided exercise and education resources available at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC). These individuals are now enjoying a healthier lifestyle, thanks to programming developed by this partnership, called the Strategic Health Alliance (SHA). Last year alone, a total of 634 people participated in SHA programming through 6,957 visits to the TCC. On Wednesday November 5, the SHA showcased its chronic disease exercise programming as seen through the patients’ eyes, during an Open House for Kamloops physicians and medical professionals at the TCC. The event gave physicians and other healthcare providers an opportunity to learn more about ways their patients can independently manage their disease. “It’s really important that people
have a safe environment in which to learn about their disease, and access to health-care professionals who can help them independently manage their day-to-day symptoms. We’re thrilled that the partnership between Interior Health and the City of Kamloops has resulted in such excellent programming for our patients,” says Cathy Thibault, Interior Health’s Community Integrated Health Services administrator in Kamloops. “By continuing to follow a chronic disease self-management approach, Kamloops residents with chronic conditions will continue to achieve better health outcomes and quality of life.” The Open House showcased several of the SHA’s exercise programs, covering a variety of chronic diseases. While many of these programs have been running for several years, their content has been broadened and enhanced with additional resources such as Mental Health, Home Health and Diabetes education, in order to better meet the needs of Kamloops residents.

The real boss
The boss of our small company was complaining during a staff meeting that people didn’t respect him enough. Trying to change the attitude in the office he came in the next day with a sign for his door it said, “I am the boss”. One of the employees apparently not appreciating the change posted a post-a-note on the sign it said, “Your wife wants her sign back”.

echo stargazer Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your words can definitely get you into trouble but sometimes you have to say what’s on your mind. You finally feel strength and energy returning so let go of the past. That beginning you’re waiting for finally arrives. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You may be optimistic and free spirited but some parts of the world can be quite controlling and gloomy. The push and pull you’ve been feeling finally comes home and it’s time to deal with. An old love will return to confuse the mix. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) It might feel like everything you touch breaks this week but it’s not all doom and gloom. You’re just charged with physical energy. Get out with the group and go for a run. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re locked in a fight with your past that has to power to change and transform. Creativity and a close look at the details lead to an unexpected victory. Keep your eyes on the fine print and work that home based business. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) This week you’ll be feeling creative and expressive but the pull is towards higher learning and foreign pursuits. You may be surprised to find yourself extra intuitive but a bit bored. Shake things up a bit to feel less restricted. Love is waiting at the bookstore Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Success this week comes from groups so stick with the team. You’re working harder than usual and you’ll be asked to step into a leadership role. Both love and money are arriving through your partnerships so play nice. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You were so focused on responsibilities recently that you might have wondered if you’d ever find love again. A new you blooms and takes chances. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) You’re daily affairs should be running smoothly but I wouldn’t expect any turbo boosts. Now’s the time to get your routine and health back on track so… it’s one month of taking care of business then back to love. Patience. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’re creative, expressive... and frisky! Explore the world and be proud of your latest accomplishments. Feeling lucky? Buy a lottery ticket! You deserve this time to play. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Your daily pace picks up considerably and it feels like you’re running just to keep up. Something new in your daily life has the power to transform. The reclusive mood passes midweek.. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Whatever was holding you back is now gone and confidence takes over. You’re now ready to spread your wings. Go for it but don’t expect everyone to read your mind. You’re going to have to speak up. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Thinking new curtains, a new dresser… or a new address altogether? As you ponder ways to beautify your home, ask yourself why you’re there in the first place. Maybe it’s time to move up. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
