Community kitchen goes to semi-finals Almost everyone in town has heard of the Aviva Community Fund in some respect or another. Many of our community organizations have put bids forward in the past to earn one of the yearlycoveted grant spots. The fund, which awards winners substantial sums based on project scope, has awarded projects in our surrounding area including the Courtney and Skye Buck Memorial Courtyard at Raft River Elementary in Clearwater and the Kamloops United Church with much needed kitchen equipment. Many other projects have made it to the finals and semi-finals including one on the slate this year at the Centre for Seniors Information (CSI) Community Kitchen Project. “CSI Community Kitchens Project has raised enough support to earn a spot in the Aviva Fund Semi-Finals, and will be entered into the competition as one of the 120 semi-finalists from December 1 to 10, 2014.” Explains Brenda Prevost, executive director of the Centre. “Thank you to everyone who voted to help us get into the Aviva semi-final round out of hundreds of Canada wide ideas. Only one voting round left from December 1st to10th. CSI will be sending out information over the next three weeks about how to sign up and work towards building a strong support base between now and the

Centre, which is open to all seniors to come, learn, make friends and enjoy their time. “Our centre is working towards developing a commercial kitchen to meet our community’s increasing needs around food services, food preparation and education,” she continues. “Food services play an important role as demonstrated by the increasing requests for our noon lunches, pot luck dinners and pancake breakfasts. Kamloops is increasingly expanding our Community Gardens and Food Share Programs. The development of our Community Kitchen within our Activity Centre is the perfect home to further develop a range of these programs that will meet our communities’ needs.” The new kitchen facilities will function as a hub for social inclusiveness and provide a way for CSI participants to learn about cooking, baking, canning and preserving delicious and nutritious foods. The sharing of skills and experiences, multi-generational learning, food security, reduced isolation and interactive community participation are all direct benefits. The kitchen will be available to anyone and everyone in the community. The possibilities are endless. “The Activity Center was built largely through volunteer labour, community support and fundrais- continued on page 2

If not, consider this: influenza kills more Canadians than all other vaccine-preventable illnesses combined. While things like hand-washing, covering a cough or sneeze, and staying home when sick help prevent illness, the single most effective way to reduce the spread of influenza is to get vaccinated. Look for details at immunizebc.ca/diseasesvaccinations/influenza on clinics near you.

Peace Week celebrates 30 years In 2014, YMCA Peace Week celebrates its 30th anniversary and invites people of all ages to reflect on peace, to talk, and to take action, individually and with others. From November 15 to 22, the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA, together with YMCAs across Canada, offers activities that help children, youth and adults explore peace from personal, local and global perspectives. Collectively, YMCAs in Canada ask people to: Build community. Act for peace. More than the absence of violence and conflict, peace is the ongoing work of building and maintaining conditions of fairness, inclusion, empathy, security, and respect for diversity. Peace building is core to the YMCA’s commitment to strengthening the foundation of healthy communities and part of the Kamloops Y’s year round programs. Peace Week activities include the Giving Tree, free yoga classes and a free swim. Bring new socks, mittens and scarves to decorate the Giving Tree at all Y locations. 13th Annual Homes for the Holidays

2014 is the 13th Anniversary year and will be sure to not disappoint! The Homes for the Holidays tour has become one of the city’s most popular house tours and is not only a valuable source for unique holiday decorating ideas, but it’s an important fundraiser for the United Way. The tour features homes volun-

teered by local Kamloops residents and decorated by Kamloops’ signature designers. Designers work together with florists and retailers to inspire Christmas décor, contemporary flair and I-never-thought-of-that pieces. This year’s tour will once again feature many wonderful delights! Not only is it a great day or eve-

ning out for family and friends, but it’s become the signature Christmas event Kamloops and area residents take part in to kick off the holiday season. 2014 tour dates are November 22 and 23. For more information email info@homesfortheholidayskamloops.ca or visit homesfortheholidayskamloops.ca/.

It was a particularly tough football game and nerves were on edge. The home team had been the victim of three or four close calls and they were now trailing the visitors by a touchdown and a field goal. When the official called yet another close one in the visitors’ favor, the home quarterback blew his top. How many times can you do this to us in a single game?” he screamed. “You were wrong on the out-of-bounds, you were wrong on that last first down, and you missed an illegal tackle in the first quarter.” The official just stared. Man of the house A man was married to a woman whose commands to her husband were as sharp as the bite of a barracuda. It wasn’t so much that he was a coward, or too timid to talk back, but you know how it is…let’s keep peace in the family. One day the wife invited a group from the local women’s club to her house for tea and discussions. To make sure that her husband did not interrupt the goings-on, she ordered him into the closet and sternly told him to stay there until the last lady had left. During their bridge game, the ladies of the club spoke of the authority they wielded over respective husbands. Not to be outdone,

Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) The future you’ve been creating is finally here. You could spend more time in your personal game of preparation and reparation, or you could just begin living the life you deserve. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) A new you is about to bloom and people notice. Although still reclusive for another week, a stranger might tempt you out into adventure to remember. There’s room for optimism but stick to your budget. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Ease off the pace and have a look around. You might have moved to far too quickly and it’s time for others to catch up. A lover returns from the past. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re past is picking a fight and you’re doing your best to keep up. It doesn’t seem fair but you still have to keep going. Keep your eyes open because you’re going to meet someone who can help. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You’ve changed your philosophies and softened in the last couple of weeks. People notice and a new job opportunity presents itself. An office romance goes a little further. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Teaming up pays off and it feels great! Focus shifts towards intellectual and exotic pleasures, and travel. A shopping trip to Vancouver could be fun. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You were so hot recently, hearts would break just thinking of you. Now it’s time to settle down with your new friend and build that future you’re dreaming of. Legal news might surprise. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) It’s been a boring couple of weeks but that’s about to change! Love returns bringing a second chance at a new beginning. Remember recent lessons and appreciate the people in your life… while they’re there. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’re still frisky but the chores are piling up and your partner is feeling neglected. Take step to reign in your daily routine. Planning your day will reveal more time for love. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Don’t roar too loudly but make your ideas known. Feelings of playfulness and a light hearted attitude return. Life continues its frantic pace and taking care of the kids fill your day. Continue to watch for accidents. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) After thinking about it for a couple of weeks, it’s now time to make a decision about your living arrangements. Your home is a natural extension of how you’d like to present yourself to the world. So, have a look inwards... then decorate! Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Usually the observer, you feel compelled to speak up. But what to say? Centering and calming thoughts will lessen distractions.
