Now wait just a cotton-picking minute! Tucked back in a room at the Cottonwood Community Centre is a group that meets just twice a month but produces big results. The Cotton Pickers, as they have named themselves, are a group of dedicated quilters who enjoy each other’s company and their art form.

They came together 11 years ago and since that time have been using their skillsets for good throughout our community. “We are a little guild of about 40 people,” explains Val McDougall, a member of the club. “We are not a big group, small like sisters.

We try to help out in our community. When we started we took on the hospice as our charity to make quilts for the beds and it grew from there.” The group now not only makes quilts for the hospice beds but also makes items to sell in the hospice’s

annual holiday storefront with proceeds going to the charity. They have also always collected food for the Food Bank at Christmas but this year decided to do something a little bit different. “This year we decided to quilt baby blankets for Basics for Babies,” continues Val. “Every child deserves to be warm and have a baby blanket. We all have extra fabric. We phoned Wes Graham at the Food Bank and after he came and spoke to us about the program we were all on-board.” What happened after that was magical. The little group managed to create 65 baby quilts and five afghan blankets. The quilts will be presented on stage at the Basics for Babies breakfast by four members of the club. This one act shows us the spirit of community that is alive here in Kamloops. Their one act of kindness will give 70 babies in the Kamloops area the gift of warmth this year and no matter how you look at that, it is priceless! “When you join a group like this,” finishes Val. “You are a bud that just blossoms. We are just like a family. There is a real kinship in quilting.” The Kamloops Food Bank Basics for Babies breakfast happened last Friday, November 21. The money and goods raised ensures the most innocent clients at Kamloops Food Bank have formula, diapers, jarred - continued on page 2 Instructions: Mix Protein & Greens with water, juice or non-dairy beverage, shake and go! On November 18, the BC Interior Community Foundation (BCICF), formerly the Kamloops Foundation, awarded grants to ten worthy projects in the BC Interior. Ten organizations will also be receiving close to $10,000 as part of the fall granting program, a joint partnership with the BCICF and the Stollery Foundation Small Grants Program. BCICF Grant Committee co-chairperson Cara Graden says, “In our fall granting process we received 25 grant applications requesting over $105,000 but we were only able to fund 12 percent of the requests made. With so much need in the community, and so many worthwhile causes seeking funding, the Foundation does its best to ensure we are allocating our granting dollars effectively but unfortunately it’s not enough to meet the demand”. With the support of many community builders the Foundation awarded funding to support a number of projects in a variety of different areas; Supporting Youth and Education: Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative was awarded $1,000 towards family literacy nights to increase awareness and availability of quality literacy activities for families. Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded $1200 towards a mentorship program for girls ages ten to 14. Supporting Health and Welfare:

Mt. Paul United Church was awarded $1,000 towards the sensational soup program that feeds low income families. Kamloops Food Bank was awarded $1,000 towards the purchase of new tires for the refrigerator truck that delivers fresh food to charities around the community. Supporting Arts and Culture: Kamloops Symphony Society was awarded $500 towards the replacement of a twenty- year old digital piano keyboard. Kamloops Arts Council was awarded $1,000 towards supporting youth as emerging artists in the community. Supporting Environment and Recreation: Kamloops Cariboo Regional Immigrants Society was awarded $1,000 towards engaging new Canadians who are feeling isolated in a tenweek cooking program. Sun Peaks Youth Soccer was awarded $1,000 towards the purchase of equipment for the start up of a youth soccer camp and soccer league in the Sun Peaks community. Supporting Children and Families: Interior Community Services was awarded $1,000 towards First Step Program, providing assistance to young mothers for childcare and parenting program. Habitat for Humanity Kamloops Society was awarded $1,000 towards 2014 housing project for the purchase of kitchen appliances for one of the homes.

Basics for Babies was held on Friday, November 21 at Hotel 540. The annual fundraiser for the Kamloops Food Bank raised $45,000 and 15,000 pounds of baby products. Jason Watt, son of the Echo’s delivery specialist Ian Watt, was helping out!

– continued from page 1 foods and cereal year round. Although the event is over, the Food Bank is always happy to accept donations. You can also see the Cotton Pickers work in action at the Marjorie Snowden Hospice retail outlet in Northills Centre this holiday season. The storefront will be open from November 28 through December 21. There will be quilted items for sale and a quilt up for raffle.

This is a reminder to us all that giving of our skillset and ourselves can have a far reach within our community. We all have different talents, find yours and find a way to make it reach beyond yourself. For more information on the Cotton Pickers Club please contact Jeanie at 250-374-0851 for more information. The Food Bank at 171 Wilson Street can be reached by calling 250-376-2252. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Family owned and fantastic! I love, love, love the Brock Centre Liquor Store. It’s not the huge selection of products, it’s not the giant walk-in beer, cooler and cider cold room, it’s not the convenient location right inside the Brock Market Square – it’s the people! Their customer service is beyond exceptional with happy, smiling faces and helpfulness that goes beyond a normal sales transaction. “We have been here for 11 years,” explains Gary Bigham who owns the store alongside his sister Joan Sivyer. “We are locally family owned and operated. The Bigham’s have been on the North Shore for over 80 years. We are North Shore thru and thru.” Along with the duo is a fabulous staff that not only knows their customers but helps them with all their purchases. Amanda keeps everyone updated on all the new specials, giveaways and super cool contests that run each month not only in store but on their facebook page as well. “We have the best giveaways,” tells Amanda. “We don’t giveaway key chains and little things here. Right now depending on what products you purchase you can win everything from a Lagostina roasting pan to a whole Oneida cookware set. Our most popular giveaway has been our Kokanee sweater, it’s got a pocket for your beer!” I myself couldn’t help but pick up a bottle of Painted Turtle Pinot

Joan tells us, “We carry a big selection of BC wines, BC VQA wines and lots of international wines. We are always building our selection. We just brought in four new ones from Chile, Argentina, California and Australia. We also carry organic wines and a selection from Harpers Trail here in Kamloops.” In addition to their large selection of wines and their nearly 625

They have a wide arrangement of gift boxes and packs for Christmas and will even put together custom ones with whatever you would like inside. Chamber Music Series: Angels – Transcending Time Join a quartet of Kamloops Symphony Chamber Musicians on November 29 at 7:30pm for this performance at the TRU Alumni Theatre. The KSO Chamber Musicians are Sally Arai, Clarinet; Naomi Cloutier, Piano; Cvetozar Vutev, Violin; Martin Kratky, Cello. The clarinet, piano, violin and cello is an unusual combination of instruments that few composers have combined. Among the few are Walter Rabl, John Williams, and Olivier Messiaen, which make up this performance programme. The first, Walter Rabl’s Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, is one of only two chamber works Rabl composed. The Quartet was dedicated

to Brahms, and listeners can hear his influence in the piece. It was composed in 1896. The premiere performance

in 1896 won first prize in a Vienna Musicians Association contest and is described as a “very mature work” for such

a young composer. Rabl had only been composing for two or three years at the time. Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), was composed in a war camp during World War 2. French composer Messiaen was captured by the German army at the age of 31. He was inspired by an image from the book of Revelation. The quartet premiered at the camp in 1941 to 400 fellow prisoners. Tickets for Angels – Transcending are available at the door, at Kamloops Live! Box Office: 250-374-5483 or 1-866374-5483, or online at www.kamloopslive.ca. Half-off adoption fees at SPCA

Winter is coming to BC, and as temperatures across the province start to drop, the BC SPCA is encouraging people who are thinking about adopting a furry family member to consider cats, and is offering 50 per cent off adult cat adoption fees until November 30. The Kamloops SPCA’s special will coincide with the adoption promotion now that the facility is out of the ringworm quarantine and have several animals ready for adoption. “It’s cold outside. We’re reminding British Columbians that when one cat is adopted, it frees up shelter space and allows us to bring another cat in from the frigid winter condi-

tions experienced in much of the province,” says Lorie Chortyk, BC SPCA general manager of community relations. “The BC SPCA takes in thousands of cats each year – there were 13,000 in 2013 and of those, 7,000 were adult cats.” Chortyk notes the adoption fee includes vaccinations, spaying or neutering, permanent ID, any necessary medical care, and internal and external parasite treatment. Normal adoption counseling and matching takes place to ensure animals go to a good home, and Petsecure provide six weeks of free pet insurance. Visit spca.bc.ca/adopt to find a furry friend, today!

Patient’s journey showcased For the last six years, a partnership between the City of Kamloops and Interior Health has helped hundreds of Kamloops residents with chronic diseases better manage their health challenges through guided exercise and education resources available at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC). These individuals are now enjoying a healthier lifestyle, thanks to programming developed by this partnership, called the Strategic Health Alliance (SHA). Last year alone, a total of 634 people participated in SHA programming through 6,957 visits to TCC. Earlier this month, SHA showcased its chronic disease exercise programming as seen through the patients’ eyes, during an open house for Kamloops physicians and medical professionals, giving health-care providers an opportunity to learn more about ways their patients can independently manage their disease. “It’s really important that people have a safe environment in which to

learn about their disease, and access to health-care professionals who can help them independently manage their day-to-day symptoms. We’re thrilled that the partnership between Interior Health and the City of Kamloops has resulted in such excellent programming for our patients,” says Cathy Thibault, Interior Health’s Community Integrated Health Services administrator in Kamloops. “By continuing to follow a chronic disease self-management approach, Kamloops residents with chronic conditions will continue to achieve better health outcomes and quality of life.” The Open House showcased several of the SHA’s exercise programs, covering a variety of chronic diseases. While many of these programs have been running for several years, their content has been broadened and enhanced with additional resources such as Mental Health, Home Health and Diabetes education, in order to better meet the needs of Kamloops residents.

echo stargazer Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Life lightens up and you begin to shine. If you’re looking for love, a smile is all it will take to spark an adventure. Be a little pushy and you’ll get your way. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) It’s been busy and although you’d like to keep pushing through, it’s time for a break. Pamper yourself and tally recent adventures. Love returns from the past. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) It’s been tough but the team is still looking at you for the answers. Clean up the mess once and for all. You’re almost there. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Jump into the holiday spirit and spruce up the office. You’re a dynamo and the bosses notice! Lead the festivities and rewards will follow. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The financial fight is almost over and it’s time to begin thinking about the holidays. The travel bug catches your eye but it’s important to remember recent lessons and stick to the budget. Love is waiting outdoors. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Recent partnerships have romantic ups and downs but it’s now time to focus on the money you could make together. Trust your decisions and give your team a chance. By week’s end you’ll have a good reason to smile. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Love is in the air and you’re being seen as love doll #1! Do your best to be your best and talk to strangers. You’re going to unexpectedly bump into some who’ll help you towards your goals. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Take a moment and look at all the good you recently created for yourself and your family. There’s a lot to be proud of. As we begin again, take more care of your body and your mind. This means a little more yoga and meditation. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Feeling frisky? You’ve worked hard lately and the rewards were slow to arrive but it’s now your turn to play. Make sure you finish your chores and get to the gym before you head out on Friday Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Words spell trouble so watch out! Sometimes you can’t avoid trouble but don’t go looking for it. Money arrives from an unusual source Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A happy home is not too much to ask for but trouble within the family upsets the balance. Stand up for what you believe. Your smile returns for the weekend. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Well Scorpio did you take that chance in the darkness and reach for your dream or was it more of the same? Now that you’re here, you’re going to have to up your game and create some opportunities in your new world. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
