Comfort food for a good cause Tasty, traditional Ukrainian fare is up for grabs and it’s for a great cause. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints hosts Orphan’s Dinner: Friday Night Perohy (or perogie as some would call them) dinners on the last Friday of every month from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Parish volunteers gather to handcraft cabbage rolls and perogy dumplings, and serve them to their monthly dinner guests. 80 per cent of the funds raised serve the Kornylovychi and Bukovo orphanages in the L’Viv region of Western Ukraine. Working through the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Church of Canada, those funds help support efforts to give the children a comfortable life and staff resources to best care for the children. The collective fundraising efforts allowed for the purchases of a wood heater, furnaces, hot water heaters, washers and dryers, microwave ovens, kitchen appliances, miscellaneous supplies, bed linens and energy efficient lamps. Pick up Ukranian dishes to go Tuesday mornings – continued from front needed funds when local causes are in need. Notably the Poketella Ukrainian Dancers, in support of a recent out-of-town competition. They also raised $1000 for the Fort McMurray food bank during the devastating fires. You can’t beat the price, a hearty meal for only $10.00, which includes dessert! If you’d prefer to eat light, you can get a bowl of borscht, dessert and coffee for a mere $4.00. Budget friendly fundraising that won’t break the bank! Can’t make the dinner? No prob-
lem! Did you know that you can get yummy Ukrainian dishes to go? Every Tuesday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, you can pick up a dozen cabbage rolls for $6.00 or a dozen perogies for $5.00. Liz says that people often stock up on dozens of items for Christmas and holiday dinners or for the middle of the week when they need supper in a pinch. She, like the other volunteers enjoys the company and conversation in the kitchen as they whip up mass quantities of soups, sweets and savouries.
It’s a lovely, social outing for the self-described “old timer.” It’s also a great feeling to be apart of the big picture—supporting the Ukrainian orphans in her own way. Liz commends the awesome volunteer efforts and well as the donors: “people are very generous with their donations.” Liz invites people to call the church at 250-376-9209 or call Bella at 250-376-9680 or stop by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints, located at 1044 8th Street. The 11th annual Pumpkins of Light Festival brought hundreds of children of all ages to Gardengate on October 27. There were over 300 lit up jack-o-lanterns on display making for a spooky show. Included at the festivities were Mason Kiley and his mom Leslie Quesnel.
MP McLeod pays tribute to Kamloops couple in Parliament MP Cathy McLeod delivered the following statement in the House of Commons on October 28 paying tribute to Rick and Donna Wanless of Kamloops. Mr. Speaker- It is a distinct honour to pay tribute Rick and Donna Wanless of Kamloops and Allan De Genova, president of Honour House Society. Combined they have created a unique retreat called Honour Ranch. This facility will be used to help Armed Forces Members and emergency first responders who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder.
Honour Ranch will offer free of charge specialized treatment programs but also a place to escape from the rigors of everyday life. A place to camp, fish and a little boating! Through the generosity of the Wanless’, who are sharing the majority of their 25 acre hobby farm, much needed help will be offered to those who are suffering with PTSD and other occupational stress injuries that come from being on the front lines of helping others. I look forward to the opening of the facility next Spring and recognizing the important contribution by Mr. and Mrs. Wanless.

Local company goes international For the first time ever, a Luxembourg knife brand is being made available to the international community thanks to Chatwin, a kitchen and dining experience products brand in Kamloops, and their Crucial heirloom knife collection. A paring knife, boning knife and chef’s knife make up the collection of fine knives, which were ergonomically designed with a minimalist aesthetic and a focus on functionality. The collection is perfect for the home cook or a chef on the go as it comes with an innovative custom wooden holder which transforms into a free standing knife block, a magnetic wall knife rack or a safe travel case. Also, thanks to its minimalist design, it won’t take up precious counter space like traditional bulky knife blocks. “I designed the collection with a focus on food preparation and my family’s love and respect for things that are built to last and can be passed down through generations,” says Philippe Schlesser, product designer for Chatwin, “I wanted to create a set that is of equally high standards in quality and refinement, so that I could share this tradition

Recently a Kamloops woman received a phone call telling her that she had won a quarter of a million dollars from Publisher’s Clearing House. The person making the phone call said that he could help her save money on the taxes from her winning and asked for her bank account information. The fraudster said he would deposit money into her account and then she should send this money to a person in the Philippines via Money Mart and Canada Post. Sums of money were deposited and the victim followed the instructions, sending the money to a fictitious person. The victim discovered she was being scammed when she found that the scammers had accessed her savings account and the money they had allegedly been depositing into her chequing account was actually her own money from her savings account. The total amount sent by the victim was $26,500. “Thinking you have won a large amount of money is very exciting,” stated Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. “Always remember though, if the person asks you to send money to them to claim the prize or avoid taxes, it’s a scam. If you are asked to provide your credit card number or provide your financial institution information, it’s a scam. If you are asked to pre-pay taxes or any kind of fee, it’s a scam.” For more information on avoiding scams, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online.

On Thursday, November 3 the Gaby Davis Foundation is hosting its first ever fundraiser in Kamloops. The Gr8teful Plateful will be a fun night of fine dining in support of BC families affected by childhood cancer. Doors open 6:00 pm at The Double Tree by Hilton and a buffet dinner will be served from 6:30 pm. Tickets are on sale now. For more information visit www.gabydavisfoundation.com. The Gr8teful Plateful is the signature event of the Gaby Davis Foundation’s inaugural Gr8teful and Giving campaign; encouraging people to act on their gratitude by donating to this Canadian charity which provides financial assistance to families with a child going through cancer. The Foundation is hoping to raise $8,000 from the event, which will feature a silent auction. Local organizer Clare Adams became involved in the Foundation while living in Coquitlam where the Foundation is based, but having moved to Kamloops in 2014, she stepped away from her role on the Board only to find that two families who had been recipients of Foundation grants were neighbours in her new community of Westsyde. “Seeing the very real impact of childhood cancer on these families reminded me of how important the work of this charity is and I saw that my move to Kamloops didn’t mean I couldn’t be involved anymore, instead it means that I have huge
opportunity to increase the profile of this amazing charity to a whole new community” says Adams. “Most of our fundraising to date has been around the Lower Mainland, but we do provide grants to families across BC, so it is exciting to expand our fundraising base to reflect that,” adds Tanya Davis, president of the Foundation and Gaby’s Mom. Adams is currently looking for volunteers and silent auction items to assist with the event as well as encouraging people to look at the opportunities to get involved with the Gr8teful and Giving campaign. The Gaby Davis Foundation was founded in 2007 after Gabrielle Davis lost her own battle with cancer at age seven. Her brave fight against cancer and her thoughtfulness towards other children with cancer inspired the foundation to help other families fighting this terrible beast. The Gaby Davis Foundation seeks to improve a child’s quality of life during cancer treatment by providing financial aid and support to children with cancer and their families. The Foundation believes children with cancer will receive the most consistent medical care when their parents can focus on them, rather than the additional burdens caused by a cancer diagnosis. To date, with an all-volunteer board, the Foundation has helped 88 families including two in Kamloops. 90 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the families.

Don’t lose your phone!
Two accountants are in a bank, when armed robbers burst in. While several of the robbers take the money from the tellers, others line the customers, including the accountants, up against a wall, and proceed to take their wallets, watches, etc. While this is going on accountant number one jams something in accountant number two’s hand. Without looking down, accountant number two whispers, “What is this?” to which accountant number one replies. “It’s that $50 I owe you.”

Million-dollar singing frog A man walks into a bar and asks the bartender, “If I show you a really good trick, will you give me a free drink?” The bartender considers it and then agrees. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles and proceeds to play the blues. After the man finished his drink, he asked the bartender, “If I show you an even better trick, will you give me free drinks for the rest of the evening?” The bartender agrees, thinking that no trick could possibly be better than the first. The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a tiny rat. He reaches into his other pocket and pulls out a tiny piano. The rat stretches, cracks his knuckles, and proceeds to play the blues. pulls out a small bullfrog, which begins to sing along with the rat’s music. While the man is enjoying his beverages, a stranger confronts him and offers him $100,000.00 for the bullfrog. “Sorry,” the man replies, “he’s not for sale.” The stranger increases the offer to $250,000.00 cash up front. “No,” he insists, “he’s not for sale.” The stranger again increases the offer, this time to $500,000.00 cash. The man finally agrees and turns the frog over to the stranger in exchange for the money. “Are you insane?” the bartender demanded. “That frog could have been worth millions to you, and you let him go for a mere $500,000!” “Don’t worry about it,” the man answered. “The frog was really nothing special. You see, the rat’s a ventriloquist.”

echo stargazer Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your words bite hard without even trying and you easily send love running just by the harsh way you say hello. It may seem futile but knowing all of this in advance can save your heart. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) The light is shining on your past and love has dropped in to say hello. You might feel tired and nostalgic but love is still calling. Dig deep and say yes when that dark and sexy friend finally asks you out. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Being full of energy and primed to take on the world doesn’t mean you should be disruptive to the dreams of those around you. Love is attracting secret affairs so don’t rock the boat. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) If you’re in a quiet battle with someone simply let sleeping dogs lie and get on with your life. Friends are calling and you might as well get out and play. The light returns to your career. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Your career is on full steam and everywhere you go people want to know about your latest triumphs. Friends can be a downer but you’ve recently been reborn into a global world. Give yourself time to grow. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Double check all paperwork relating to joint finances. The travel bug has taken a bite but your finances have to be in order to take that trip. Forget trivial arguments and give love a chance. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The love spotlight is shining on your personal relationships and your latest playmate looks like a keeper. It’s time to take things to the next level. Joint finances get a boost. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Love is attracting stronger than you think but it’s different this time. A new energy is heating up your personal relationships. Open yourself to someone unusual and let love win the day. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Loving energy is helping to smooth the bumps in your daily routine. Relationships on the other hand are filled with unresolved conflicts. You already have the answers. Start living them. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Your daily routine is filled with bumps, potholes and endless accidents. Take a deep breath and look at how far you’ve already come. A personal goal deserves one more push. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) The spotlight is directly shining on your words so watch what you say! The world has moved on and conversations are exposing more of where you might be stuck than you realize. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Yes, your silver tongue has returned and money looks brighter than it has in years but you will need all of your personal tools and a full pocketbook to survive your latest decision. Country shopping England’s West Country is known for its charming cottage-like shops. While visiting the area, my friend peered in through one window to see shelf upon shelf of interesting-looking books. So she went inside. A woman appeared though
a beaded curtain and asked, “Can I help you?” “No, just browsing,” said my friend. “Fine,” came the reply. “But so you know, around here most people knock before entering someone’s home.”
