More than just run the North Shore Community Centre, Dwight has created community. Among the myriad of activities, classes and groups that run everyday he has organized some very key events and traditions. He started the Spring Antique Show seven years ago and it’s grown to over 35 vendors. Now they do a Spring and Fall show, a Fashion Show, a Toy and Train Show and have carried UT

on with the Craft Fair. We will definitely miss Dwight and all his vigor but knowing him he won’t be sitting back, with his feet up relaxing for long. Anyone who knows Dwight knows that he is an avid collector. He collects RCMP memorabilia and loves Christmas. There has been rumours that he will be sharing some of his collections – continued on page 2

There is no doubt that along with the residents of Cottonwood Manor, the community as a whole is going to miss Dwight Hoglund when he finally takes some time out for himself and retires from the North Shore Community Centre at the end of November. Dwight has been a integral person at the North Shore Community Centre for the last 10 years and an active part of the Kamloops community for decades. He started out in this town as a member of the RCMP and after retiring from the force some years ago he eventually found himself at the helm of the North Shore Community Centre, and has made it his mandate that this would be the place that seniors could call their own, meet, do the things they like and keep active. With Dwight around, that happened and a whole lot more. Ask the residents at Cottonwood Manor, the countless number of volunteers he has and the many different members of our community who visit the North Shore Community Centre on a regular basis and they will tell you that Dwight grew that place from the ground up, is organized, cares and that he works hard and makes things happen. “Dwight has a special relationship with all the people at the centre, tells his wife and biggest supporter Linda. “He’s a jokester, he loves to laugh and there is never a dull moment when he is around. He’s 65 now and he has decided to finally stop working. He wants to travel and we have bought a place in Arizona that we want to spend time in. He’ll definitely miss the people, he is very people oriented. He will miss his core group of volunteers but they are some really good people and they will be able to continue on.

Help CBC Radio-Canada come to Kamloops
CBC/Radio-Canada has recently made an application to the CRTC to operate a new English-language FM station in the Kamloops area. The application will be considered at the same time as an application to amend CBC Radio One Kelowna’s license to switch a number of transmitters from the Kelowna feed to the new Kamloops feed. The application is item 18 in the Notice of Consultation and can be found at the website http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2011/2011675.html. As a resident in the transmission area, you can write the CRTC in support of CBC/ Radio-Canada’s application. The deadline for submitting your comments is November 28 at 5pm. There are three ways to comment: 1) By mail: Mr. John Traversy, Secretary General; CRTC; Ottawa, ON K1A 0N2. 2) By fax: 819-994-0218. 3) Online at https://services.crtc.gc.ca/ pub/Intervention/Submission-Soumission.
aspx?lang=e&EN=2011-675&ET=N#SE0. Whatever method you use, please be sure to also send a copy of your submission to CBC/ Radio-Canada in order to validate the process. You can do so by fax at 613-288-6257 or by email at regulatoryaffairs@cbc.ca. CBC/Radio-Canada wants to launch this new station as part of their increased local focus and their commitment under the 2015 strategic plan “Everyone, Every Way”. CBC/ Radio-Canada has committed to introduce or improve services to more than six million Canadians over the next four years. CBC recognizes the importance of being rooted in growing cities such as Kamloops. This as an important initiative to fine-tune radio content to better serve the needs of their audience in Kamloops and surrounding areas.
Approval of the application will mean that the market will have programming that is focused on its community, its issues and its weather and will include a local morning show based in Kamloops, from 6:00 am to 8:30 am, Monday to Friday providing new local programming for Kamloops and surrounding regions from Salmon Arm to Lytton to 100 Mile House. The morning show will provide a mix of local, national and international news and offers listeners in-depth interviews and short documentaries that offer a deeper insight into the news of the day and the issues that matter. The format will provide lots of ways for listeners to engage in the conversation about their community including open-lines, talkback, twitter, email and public forums.

Hoglund gets a fond farewell
– continued from page 1 with the community through shows and displays at local malls and such. “Dwight will keep himself busy from now right through Christmas,” continues Linda. “Every year he builds a giant Christmas city in the house. It is so big we have to clear out all the furniture in the living room. His collecting started when he worked at a store called ‘A Special Place’ and he came home with a Coca-Cola building. That started it all. Now each Christmas he builds his special city on five eight foot tables, three tiers high.” Congratulations on your retirement Dwight. We here at the Echo along with all the friends, family and fans you have gathered over your long career will miss seeing you and listening to your laugh. We are happy you are taking some time to yourself but are pretty sure we haven’t seen the last of you! Tanya Orozco, freelance

Kamloops receives funds in lieu of taxes Today the Ministry of Labour, Citizens’ Services and Open Government announced a $1,234,641.52 grant for Kamloops in compensation for municipal property taxes. This matters because 64 communities across British Columbia will share $16.9 million in grants-in-lieu of property taxes as well these grants are distributed as a way to reimburse municipalities for services benefitting government properties, such as sewers, roads and fire protection and the amounts paid are based on the assessed value of the properties and the municipality’s tax rate.
“The Province recognizes the importance of compensating municipalities like Kamloops for local services that benefit government-owned properties – so this funding is an investment. said Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. Since 2002, the Government of British Columbia has distributed more than $173 million as grants-in-lieu to B.C. municipalities. Each municipality distributes a portion of the funds to its regional district, and those governments use the money to help pay for local services.

RIH Foundation launches website and creates a buzz on Facebook
Royal Inland Hospital Foundation’s website has earned the praise of donors and supporters across the region, as it continues to build donor friendly on-line resources. “We are extremely proud of how our new look and website has evolved over the last year and a half”, said Veronica Carroll, Executive Officer with the Foundation. “We launched our new website and new logo in March of last year, and since then we’ve been adding functionality that will allow more engaged and dialogue with our supporters,” added Carroll. The RIH Foundation’s new website is designed to be user-friendly and to make information available to the community. Information about special events will be more accessible so that individuals across the region can get involved. It will also help to inform donors about capital campaign progress. The dollar counter on the new website will be continuously changing now and will track how close the
community is to hitting the goal of $3,000,000 for the New Intensive Care Unit at RIH. The Foundation has been building its web resources to engage donors and volunteers who want to build support and awareness surrounding the importance of fundraising for healthcare excellence in Central BC’s Interior. “While we still have the traditional methods of communicating with our donors, building social media resources and making the Foundation accessible to our supporters across the TCS Region has become that much more important,” said Carroll. Since December 2010, The RIH Foundation has also used social media to engage the community. From November 15,
2011 to December 1, 2011, the Foundation’s Facebook page offers a contest to their loyal fans. The fan must “like” the new RIH Foundation website post on the page. Once they do, they will be entered to win a mouth-watering Chef Tasting for four people at Ora Restaurant Lounge valued at $125. To view Royal Inland Hospital Foundation’s new website, please visit www.rihfoundation.ca. Royal Inland Hospital Foundation supports the needs of Royal Inland Hospital, which serves approximately 225,000 people from the Thompson, Cariboo Shuswap region, as well as regional facilities, and carries on the tradition of raising funds for crucial patient care equipment, health sciences bursaries, and special programs.

Canada and the U.S. share a lot. We have a shared border, share TV stations and shows, have access to many of the same products, drive the same cars, and speak the same language. One thing we have never shared is Black Friday until now‌ Black Friday is the biggest shopping and sales day in the United States. It happens every year on the Friday directly after American Thanksgiving with people all over the country go out in search of extremely slashed prices and pre-holiday savings. For years Canadians have sat on the sidelines watching their counterparts win with big savings. “Both the Lemonade Stand and Adultz will be celebrating Black Friday,â€? tells Wesley Lesosky. “We started this a couple of years ago. It is a super fun tradition. This is the perfect day to come and stock up on everything you need and have been wanting.â€? This year Black Friday lands on November 25 and here in Kamloops at the Lemonade Stand and Adultz it means huge sales all day long with many items marked 50 percent off. If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting two of the North Shore’s most unique and fun stores you are missing out and there couldn’t be a better day to go on your first visit. Bicentennial logo design contest The North and South Thompson rivers have always defined the identity and shaped the boundaries of Kamloops. Even the name of our city reflects our unique location at the junction of the two rivers: in the Secwepemc language, Kamloops means “meeting of the waters. In 1812, fur trader and explorer David Stuart built a trading post on the south shore of the Thompson River. In 2012, the City of Kamloops will commemorate two hundred years of shared history between the Secwepemc people and all those who came after David Stuart. Help commemorate this important bicentennial year by entering the official City of Kamloops 2012 logo contest. Design and submit your own logo incorporat-
ing the themes explored in the slogan: “2 Rivers, 2 Peoples, 200 Years. The winner will receive $1,000 or the equivalent in City of Kamloops facility passes or program credits, as well as a commemorative plaque presented by the Mayor. The design must be: suitable for black and white as well as colour reproduction; scaleable; in vector format (digital) preferably, but non-digital formats will also be accepted; include the phrase “2 Rivers, 2 Peoples, 200 Years;
and be clear and easy to understand. All entries will be judged by a panel, with the winner being announced on January 4 or shortly after. The winning design will become the sole property of the City of Kamloops. All submissions must be received by December 31 by e-mail to the Kamloops Museum at museum@ kamloops.ca or dropped off at the museum at 207 Seymour St, Kamloops BC, V2E 2E7.

McLeod advocates literacy Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo was pleased to speak to Private Member’s Motion No. 269 calling for improvements to financial literacy, which was sponsored by the Chair of the Finance Committee, James Rajotte. The motion recommends TC 1.8V NovDec2011.inddthat 1 the government respond to the recommendations of the Task Force on Financial Literacy. These include: creating, promoting and continuously upgrading a single source website for financial literacy to increase public awareness and ease access to information for Canadians; requiring federally regulated financial institutions to publicly disclose their contributions to financial literacy initiatives; ensuring the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada works with willing provinces and territories to promote financial literacy to youth through the education system; and designating November as financial literacy month. ET - 1.8 Sept 14.indd 1 “We live in an increasing-
ly complex financial world of investment and credit products, whose characteristics and risks have become much more difficult to comprehend,” said McLeod. “Financial products available to Canadians continue to rapidly expand and the complexity of such products can make it very difficult for most of us to fully understand the risks, the fees, and the potential returns.” In Canada’s Economic Action Plan of Budget 2009, the Conservative government outlined key steps to protect consumers with regard to financial services and products. First, the government enhanced consumer protection measures dealing with credit cards and mortgage insurance. Second, we established the Task Force on Financial Literacy to make recommendations to create a cohesive national strategy to improve financial literacy in Canada. The task force delivered its final report on February 9, 2011, entitled “Canadians and Their Money: Building a brighter financial future”.

Holiday Greetings! 2011 was a moving year...
Six years ago I sat down at my desk, a much different person, ready to compose a Christmas letter for our friends, clients and family. I was a bit hesitant because I wanted to publish the letter in the paper to make sure that everyone would have a chance to read it. I wasn’t sure how interested the general public would be in the day to day goings on of the lives of all of us at Kamloops Hearing Aid Centre. It just seemed like the right thing to do though – many of our clients are more than just customers, they have also become our friends! Christmas seems to be the time when we get back in touch with old friends and whether you’ve been in this month, this year or this decade the friendships we have made are life-long. No matter when you were last here, as in all good friendships, it’s seems like no time has passed at all and we can pick up where we left off. 2011 was a moving year, quite literally, for most of us at the Centre. We were moved to tears, moved to laughter and also just moved! You may have noticed that our address has changed; we’ve moved into our new location. Although it was the home of Sahali Dental Centre for many years, we completely renovated the building from top to bottom and it’s now a combination of residential upstairs with our office located on the main floor. Lynda and Joanne thoroughly enjoy the extra space this new office offers as well as the fact that there’s no longer a support post between them! This was such a busy year both professionally and personally. Joanne was odd man out in the first couple of months as, Lynda and her husband as well as Blaine and I took time away from the office to travel. Lynda and Dick enjoyed a vacation to New Orleans continuing on to a very relaxing Mexican cruise. Blaine and I had a working trip to Las Vegas where Nu Ear introduced their new line of hearing technology. Although Joanne didn’t get to vacation at this time she took time off to go fishing while we moved the office and has planned a winter vacation with her parents and family in Costa Rica. I am sure we all remember the Jetson’s cartoon but I bet many of you don’t remember that it was set in the futuristic year of 2011. Many years ago when I started in this business one of our hearing aid reps told me that we would one day be able to stream music from our ‘discman’ to our hearing aids. Cellphones would also be able to be heard this way. I remember being very skeptical of these predictions! Guess what? It’s 2011 and although we don’t have flying cars, we do have the results of Nu-Ear’s $70 million dollar a year research and development budget. Our customers, and their families, are loving the new wireless technology and tell us that even though they’ve had hearing aids before

this product doesn’t sit in the drawer – they wear them all day, every day! My daughter Erika took the trip of her lifetime in March with a group of school students from Kamloops to Italy for Spring Break. This is one that she, and the other tourists around her, will remember forever. While taking a rest stop at the Trevi Fountain, Erika was feeling a bit under the weather and surprise, surprise everyone saw what she had for lunch. I’m not sure that this is the memory that she was expecting. The rest of her trip went much better. After 30 years in the hearing aid industry my former business partner Al Hodgson, made the bittersweet decision to retire. In May of this year he said his final farewell to his baby – the Kamloops Hearing Aid Centre. Over the years he has helped shape the hearing aid profession through his tireless work as a board member of many committees and also lobbying for our profession. It was no surprise to us that industry-leaders, manufacturer representatives, family and friends came from all parts of Canada to honour him at his retirement party. The summer went by in a whirlwind of activity, what with our party planning for Al, my son’s high school graduation and also the move to our new location. Although the move went quite smoothly, we didn’t expect to have to deal with a flood in our new office, on a hill in Sahali! Lucky for us the fire department is just across the street and their quick response turned what could have been a disaster into a news story for CFJC. Being a full owner has had its privileges – we finally changed our commercial. Look for my handsome husband on our local TV stations. (I’m in a couple of the commercials as well.) Ownership also has a downside, now I have to deal with organizing things like City permits and inspections. Our parking lot is due to be built in 2012 and until then we have arranged with Sahali Mall management for our clients to park in their lot. That way the city is happy that our clients do not have to back onto Arrowstone Drive on their departure. Joanne’s been on the move this year too. Her and her sister-in-law started walking, dancing and exercising as well as eating healthier. You’ll see a lot less of her as she’s lost about 40 pounds! Both Lynda and Joanne were movin’ and groovin’ to the oldies. Between them they saw the concerts of John Fogerty, Colin James, The Zombies, The Contenders and Lynda’s all-time favourite - The Moody Blues Band. In October it was time for me to head home. Although I’ve lived in Kamloops for the past 34 years, I spent many of my formative years back East. Nu-Ear hosted a series of workshops in Newfoundland and Blaine and I extended this trip to do some sight-seeing. This was Blaine’s first trip to the area and he took full advantage of it. He’s now an official member of the Royal Order of Newfoundland Screechers, he’s kissed a cod, he had lunch with Reba McIntyre and he’s been to towns whose names just made him giggle like a schoolboy.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner. Where does the time go?
Our Annual ChristmasTea is planned for Friday, December 16th from noon until 4:00pm.
Please join us for some eggnog, fresh baked treats and if you haven’t been to see our new offices, we’d be happy to show you around as well. While you’re here, we will be happy to clean and check your hearing aids so that they are in the best shape for the holiday season. We’ll even have the TV set up to demonstrate the ability of the wireless technology and to show you just how far our industry has come.
Here’s hoping you and yours enjoy a very Merry Christmas season and good hearing to all in the New Year! ~ Jan
