Interior Health promotes healthy moms and babies

A HEALTHY THANK-YOU

Glen Hilke stands with one of the 20 awards that were presented on October 12 to local farmers, sausage-makers and bakers. The suppliers were recognized for their contributions to the the Gleaning Abundance Project and the Salvation Army’s efforts. 15,000 lbs of food have been distributed to various food outreach programs within the Kamloops Area.

Breaking news from the skies The airport is in the final stages of preparing for the introduction of WestJet Encore to the Kamloops market on October 27, which will see additional service to Calgary, followed by new service to Vancouver in November. This, along with Air Canada Express’ enhanced frequencies and up-gauge to an all Dash8-300 fleet for Kamloops, continues to

improve air service options in the region. Final touches are being placed on the airport fire structure with occupancy expected by the end of the month. This building will house the recently acquired firefighting vehicle, staff and supplies. The Government of Canada has contributed $544,310 toward the total project cost of $640,000.

Family fun en français The Francophone Association’s Daycare and Preschool is hosting an Open House and Family Fun Night. The community is invited to join to explore the beautiful Daycare and Preschool for a night of family fun. There will be snacks, stories, art activi-

ties, door prizes and much more including a visit from Uncle Chris the Clown! Don’t miss out on the fun on November 7 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at 348 Fortune Drive. For more information please call 250-3768660.

Information, resources and services to help moms and babies get the best start in life are now just a phone call or click away in all Interior Health communities. Healthy From The Start is a onestop shop that connects pregnant women with appropriate services in the community to support a healthy pregnancy. Information and resources are available on a variety of subjects including: accessing prenatal care, when to seek medical care, mental health, relationships, breastfeeding, parenting and more. “As a parent, I know that the months leading up to the birth of a baby are an exciting, but often overwhelming time,” says Health Minister Terry Lake. “It is great news that expectant parents from across Interior Health now have easy access to a variety of information to support them during pregnancy and help the give their babies the best start in life.” The program, formerly called the Prenatal Registry, launched in six pilot sites last year with a great response. “During our first year, over 500 women from the pilot communities used our service to connect with a public health nurse, learn about healthy

pregnancies and find out about services in their communities,” says Nadine Johnson, practice lead with Interior Health. “We are thrilled to now offer this service to women in all Interior Health communities.” Healthy From The Start can be reached through the toll-free line at 1-855-868-7710 or online by submitting the program contact form at interiorhealth.ca/ HealthyFromTheStart When a woman contacts Healthy From The Start, she will be connected with a public health nurse who will complete a health screening questionnaire; provide information on programs, supports and resources available in her community; and make referrals as necessary. “We encourage all pregnant women to take advantage of this service and to call early in their pregnancies,” says Nadine. “Receiving early prenatal care and connecting with supports and services has a tremendous impact on both the mother’s health and the health of the baby.” Healthy From The Start is available Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 4:00pm. For information, visit interiorhealth.ca/ HealthyFromTheStart.

Open fire prohibition rescinded Open fires are now permitted in all fire zones within the Kamloops Fire Centre, due to a decreased risk of wildfires. Members of the public will be allowed to: burn waste, slash or other material, burn stubble or grass and use fireworks or burning barrels of any size or description This rescinding of the open fire prohibition applies to all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by fire departments. Anyone contemplating lighting an open fire should first check with civic authorities to see if any local burning restrictions are in effect. People planning to conduct an open burn should use caution and follow these safety precautions: locate the fire site away from

buildings, trees and other combustible materials, do not burn during windy conditions, have adequate people, water and hand tools available to prevent the fire from escaping and never leave a fire unattended. Anyone lighting a fire must ensure that they conduct the burn safely and responsibly, as outlined in the Wildfire Act and its regulations. If an open fire escapes and is determined to have caused a wildfire, the person(s) responsible may be liable for fire suppression costs and damages. Information on open burning, burn categories and current fire prohibitions is available on the Wildfire Management Branch’s website at: bcwildfire.ca/ hprScripts/WildfireNews/Bans. asp. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1 800 6635555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.

Project Homeless Connect BBQ at Sprit Square on October 18 was a big hit. The sun was shining, food was cooking, music was playing and flu shots were given. Concerned citizens will rally to protest proposed mine Letter to the Editor We, citizens of Kamloops who are opposed to the degradation of our air, water, land and the well being of our health, animals, and grasslands are rallying to Stop Ajax at 330 Seymour St, Kamloops on Saturday October 26 at 12:00pm. We would like to invite all citizens to join us for the Rally who are opposed, concerned, undecided and even Ajax supporters (in hopes of changing minds). We will share with the City of Kamloops the harm that will be caused to having a copper mine not only in close proximity to a city but within city limits. To address the implications of extraction-based industries and the future of not only the Canadian landscape but also our own backyard, our water shed, our recreation area and for some in Kamloops their front yards and ranch lands. In addition, the loss of some of the best

fishing lakes in the TNRD, which will be, sandwiched between an open pit and tailings piles. It is so devastating to comprehend that the City Kamloops and the Ministries of the province of BC would even consider such a ludicrous proposal in any city, we just happen to be the first of this new extraction generation to be forced to raise awareness that it is not okay to

have open pit heavy metal extraction close to any city. Please help us to avoid being the BC city who adopts an extraction based mine in exchange for dust, heavy metals, dreadful landscape scars, loss of grasslands and our right to clean air, soil and water for minimal promises of jobs and dismal economical benefits to very few locals. We do not want

to be known as the “Community in Gloom” nor the “Community without Doctors”. We need your help to spread the news – please send your reporters to cover this Rally to STOP AJAX at 330 Seymour St, Kamloops on Saturday October 26 at 12:00pm. Concerned Citizens fighting a battle to protect the environment and health of Kamloops, BC.

Local filmmakers seeking funding After Hurricane Mitch in 1988, thousands of people were temporarily located to live on the margins on the city of Chinandega, Nicaragua in the ‘circle of death,’ living between a garbage dump, a cemetery and a sewerage plant. Over 20 years later the community of ‘El Limonal’ remains at the dump and intends to stay. Charitable projects have been set up in an effort

to help improve the health care and education of people living there, and after volunteering, gringos Jess Rothenburger and Warren Fitzgerald and filmmaker Douglas Barill, will face toxic fumes, body parts, human waste and collapsing walls of garbage to create a documentary. The base funding for the film will result from crowd-funding: indiegogo.com/projects/

Scheduled for filming in February 2014 and will be available for network distribution in August 2014. Changing seasons means changing patterns for active people. Soon the summer days of recreating in RVs and boats or on motorcycles and dirt bikes will be gone, and many outdoor enthusiasts will switch gears to colder-weather pastimes. For every motorized recreational activity, there is usually an insurance matter to consider and Interior Savings Insurance wants to make sure Kamloops residents are covered. “In the fall and winter, we offer an excellent off-road vehicle program that insures ATVs, snowmobiles and trailbikes,” says Tyra Ruscheinski, branch manager at Interior Saving Insurance. “It is a requirement that these units carry at least $200,000 liability if they are ridden on public roads, which include logging roads and many others that are popular for dirtbiking or ATV-ing – basically, they have the same requirement as vehicle insurance except that, at this point in time, these units do not have to be plated. They do, however, have to carry public liability and property damage, and we have some very competitive markets for these types of units.” Many may be unaware that their home insurance does not provide any coverage for most recreational vehicles. “Some will include coverage on watercraft, but the coverage is usually limited and liability-restricted to smaller horse-powered motors, so it is in the insured’s best interest to get in touch with their broker so they can provide the adequate

We are the North Shore. For 25 years the North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) has been a positive leader and voice of business in Kamloops.

Kamloops Burlesque is committed to bringing the the glitz, glam and cheekiness that is the magic of burlesque. Get your copy of the new 2014 Pin-Up Burlesque Calendar and never miss a show! Monthly performances, in the old Vaudeville tradition, are on the 2nd Thursday of every month at the Blue Grotto. Caroline Dick aka Lizzie Borden is captured here with the troupe’s calendar.

Getting dirty for food security The Kamloops Public Produce Project’s North Shore ‘Carmel Public Garden’ on the corner of Elm and Tranquille is gearing down as fall is taking over the city. The Kamloops Public Produce Project is a community group that is building a public produce garden Kamloops. They are working with the Kamloops Food Policy Council and the Thompson-Shuswap

Master Gardeners - as well as several other community groups throughout town. They are always looking for volunteers, ideas and input. Send them an email and find them on facebook: “Kamloops Public Produce Project.” Even better, come out and get your hands dirty in the gardens. Visit their website at publicproduceproject.blogspot.com.
