Fall time fun at Sunset Valley Farm Sunset Valley Farm at 3275 Tranquille Road invites everyone out to explore their corn maze, take a hayride and explore the pumpkin patch for a likely jack-o-lantern candidate, autumn centerpiece or perfect pie fixings this October. In 2007 the property at Sunset Valley Farm was converted to a hobby farm by the new owners and planted with fresh vegetables from it’s original use as a horse breeding ranch and hay farm. The families have been sharing nutritious fare from the Sunset Valley gardens all season long at the Farmers Market. In 2009 the first experimental pumpkin patch was planted and they discovered how much fun

visitors had spending time with loved ones and picking out a pumpkin it became an annual event. Now there are thousands of bright orange gourds ripe for picking in the six-acres of pumpkin patch you can choose from. Pumpkins have been a seasonal enjoyment at dinner tables for centuries. Did you know that pumpkin flowers are edible? Colonists used to slice off the top of the pumpkin, remove the seeds and fill the insides with milk, honey and spices, then bake it in hot RSOE - fr ear jan 25 2012.indd 1 ashes. est pumpkin pie ever made was over five feet in diameter and weighed over 350 pounds. It used 80 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 36 pounds of sugar, 144 eggs and took six hours to bake. At Sunset Valley Farm, you can enjoy the authentic tradition of choosing your favourite pumpkin and harvesting it straight from the vine. Choose from a wide array of orange carving pumpkins, mini ornamentals, sugar pie pumpkins, small white pumpkins or giant pumpkins and some really neat pumpkin shape gourds. The pumpkin patch and corn maze are open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Enjoy a last taste of autumn fun with the children every weekend in October with a hay bale maze great for little ones to explore, jump in the bouncy castles or go for a pony ride before the snow sets in. There are hay rides offered every weekend as well, leaving every 20 minutes or as soon as the wagon is full, to take sightseers on a tour around the farm. There are so many great photo opportunities to take advantage of during this colourful time of year. For the adults, there is a six-acre corn maze to navigate through and from Friday, October 23 to 25 Sunset Valley Farm is presenting a Nights of Fright Corn Maze, - continued on page 2

Flu season is here – protect yourself Interior Health is gearing up to help protect children, pregnant women, seniors, people with chronic illnesses and others who are most at risk from influenza and its complications. In a typical influenza season, thousands of Canadians develop serious illness or even die from influenza or its complications. The flu shot is a safe and effective way to help people stay healthy, prevent illness and save lives. “Influenza reduces the body’s ability to fight illnesses and infections and it can also increase a person’s risk for developing other serious conditions, including viral or bacterial pneumonia,” said Dr. Kamran Golmohammadi, medical health officer. “Getting a flu shot and washing your hands frequently are the two most effective ways to protect yourself and others from influenza and its complications.” The flu shot provides protection from the influenza virus strains expected to be circulating this season based on trends worldwide. This year’s flu shot offers
protection against two influenza A viruses (an H1N1 and an H3N2 virus) and one influenza B virus. For those under 18, the preferred vaccine also protects against an additional B influenza virus. The flu shot is free for those at risk of complications from influenza and those in contact with people at risk. Interior Health holds public clinics for those who are eligible for the free flu shot. Public clinics will the week of October 29. Many doctor’s offices, pharmacies and walk-in clinics are also providing flu shots. Those who are not eligible for the free vaccine will be required to pay a fee. To find a flu shot clinic or provider near you, watch for local announcements on dates and times in your community, contact your local public health centre or visit the Influenza Clinic Locator (http://immunizebc.ca/clinics/flu) on the ImmunizeBC website. For more information visit Interior Health’s website at www.interiorhealth.ca.

Nuns vs Dracula Two nuns from Ireland must traverse through Transylvania by car. They are a bit on edge. Stopped on the side of the road to rest they are startled when suddenly, out of nowhere, a diminutive Dracula jumps onto the hood of the car and hisses through the windshield. “Quick, quick!” shouts Sister Marilyn. “Turn the wipers on! That will get rid of the abomination!” Sister Helen switches them on, knocking Dracula about, but he clings on and continues hissing at the nuns.
“What now?” “Switch on the windshield washer! I filled it up with Holy Water before we left,” says Sister Marilyn. Dracula screams as the water burns his skin, but he clings on and continues hissing at the nuns. “My goodness, now what shall we do?” worries Sister Helen. “Show him your cross,” says Sister Marilyn. “Now you’re talking,” says Sister Helen as she rolls down the window, leans out and screams, “Get the hell off our car!”

Halloween superstition
The mommy test I was out walking with my four-year-old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that. “Why?” my daughter asked. “Because it’s been on the ground, you don’t know where it’s been, it’s dirty and probably has germs.” I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, “Mommy, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart.” I was thinking quickly. “All moms know this stuff. It’s on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don’t let you be a mommy.” We walked along in silence for two or three minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. “Oh...I get it!” she beamed, “So if you don’t pass the test you have to be the daddy.” “Exactly!” I replied back with a big smile on my face.
John decided to play a trick on his superstitious friend Henry. Now Henry liked a drink at the local pub every Friday night. One dark night Henry set off for home, meanwhile John hid in the churchyard. The scene was set. Henry staggered on home, as he passed the churchyard he said out loud, “Where am I?” John, from behind a grave, replied in a sepulchral voice: “Ammmongst the living.” “Then where are you then?” asked Henry. “Ammmmongst the deeaddd,” wailed John. Henry sobered up and ran home faster than he had ever run before.

One Halloween a trick-or-treater came to my door dressed as ‘Rocky’ in boxing gloves and satin shorts. Soon after I gave him some goodies, he returned for more. “Aren’t you the same ‘Rocky’ who left my doorstep a few minutes ago?” I asked. “Yes,” he replied, “but now I’m the sequel. I’ll be back three more times tonight too.”
Where the blame falls Three fans were talking about the sad state of their local football team. The first fan blamed, “I blame the manager; if we could sign better players, we’d be a great team.” The second fan blamed, “I
blame the players; if they made more effort, I’m sure we would score more goals.” The third fan blamed, “I blame my parents; if I had been born in a different town, I’d be supporting a decent team.”

echo stargazer Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You may be front and centre but as you well know, that’s not always a good thing. Your intuition is very strong so trust your instincts but don’t jump to conclusions. An old friend visits your dreams with a message. Have faith and believe in love. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Discipline and patience are similar but not the same and you’ll need both to complete this leg of your journey. There are conflicts when you head outside and behind the scene affairs continue but there’s a very bright light behind these clouds. Rely on the kindness of strangers. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Recent success has filled you with the realization that you can do it but getting serious doesn’t have to mean shutting yourself away. Success at work continues to guide your actions and if you can regain your playful outlook then love will follow as well. Your heart wants to say hello. Go ahead and let it. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Your heart is focused on money again but there’s a new philosophical outlook guiding your actions. You’d like to break free from the constraints that you have held you down and you’re being feisty about it. Look to the horizon for love. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Travel and foreign pursuits still occupy your mind. You’re an outside of the box thinker to begin with but this astro-cycle you’re really stretching your personal philosophies and spiritual beliefs. Apply some of your new teachings to your joint finances and watch your partnerships grow. Results are as expected. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You continue to be lucky in love but your friends might be casting disapproving glances. They might have a point in their disapproval or they might just be nitpicking. It’s up to you to decide if it’s the real deal and stroll hand in hand into your happily forever after or just wish well for the happy memories. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Competitive urges are stimulated but another busy week finds you working overtime to help others finish their chores as well. Thoughts continue to drift towards your dearest and all of the fun you should be having if you could just find the time for love. Physical activities lead to a romantic weekend. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Children and a playful outlook are front and centre. It’s a creative time where the seeds for both love and new business can be planted. Some of you will hear news of new additions to the family. When working on a new project don’t forget the obvious. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Fights at home continue but if you win, it’ll be big. After the dust has settled, there will be great news so don’t burn that bridge. Say your piece and move on with your plan. Missed communications in love deserves a second chance. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’ve been thinking about home and family but your actions are on new business. There’s both luck and love waiting as you move into a new routine but bumps along the way have you questioning your choices. Have faith and keep going. Today’s rain will bring a bigger rainbow than expected. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’re super chatty this week with a personal agenda and a financial plan to force through. People are listening to your new money ideas but you’re still pushing a little too hard. Don’t back off because luck is blessing your path but adjust your choice of words. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You finally know where you’d like to be and you have the confidence to get there. If you’re in love then the next step is only a voiced question away. Money will be on its way in a couple of weeks so there’s no reason to worry. Dress your best and go for it. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
