Thespians welcome On Golden Pond

Oscar Award winning best actor Henry Fonda and best actress Katharine Hepburn in a scene from the movie “On Golden Pond”. Kamloops Players presents the 1979 Broadway play at the Stagehouse Theatre beginning October 2.

The Kamloops Players is opening their season and wants to share the love of live theatre with you. The Players will take theatre-going audiences on an entertaining journey through the season. As part of an ambitious array of shows, they begin with the critically acclaimed, American classic “On Golden Pond” by Ernest Thompson. The 1979 play won many awards both on and off Broadway as did the 1981 film of the same name, also written by Thompson. The play takes its name and is set at a cabin on a fictional lake in Maine, Golden Pond. The story deals with an aging couple facing the twilight years of a long and loving relationship. Truly a classic, the drama is liberally sprinkled with warmth and humour. Aging couple, Ethel and Norman Thayer

(played by Liz Ekering and Rod DeBoice), have spent their summers on Golden Pond for 48 years. This particular year, as Norman’s 80th birthday approaches, sees them again at their summer home but something a bit different happens over the span of the five months covered in the play. Not long after their return to the lake, their post man and long time friend Charlie (Laurel Brewer) turns up. Charlie reminisces about the Thayer’s daughter, Chelsea, whom he used to date, not knowing that Chelsea, in an uncharacteristic move, will be coming for a visit later on in the summer. Holy Mackinoly! For her visit, their adult daughter Chelsea (Cherie Poelzer), who has been somewhat estranged from her at times cantankerous father, brings along her fiancé Bill (Frank Kohlberger) and his

teenage son Billy Jr. (Brendan Kohlberger). The adult couple goes off to Europe, leaving the boy to stay with Ethel and Norman for a few weeks. Over the rest of the summer, Billy and Norman forge a bond during many hours spent together fishing. At times very funny and at times quite touching, this play is, above all, a love story about an aging couple in the twilight years of a long and devoted marriage. Also explored is the turbulent relationship between father and daughter, the gap between the generations and the difficulties facing an elderly couple. Thompson’s writing, both warm and witty, gives a keen perspective on family relationships which remains as relevant today as in 1979 when it was penned.
