Kidney Walk connects to community spirit The 9th Annual Kidney Walk is set for Sunday, September 25 at McDonald Park. Registration starts at 10:00 am, the walk starts at 11:00 am. This family friendly event will be a literal brisk walk in the park—a day of remembering past participants. It’s also a day of raised awareness regarding the “silent killer” kidney disease. One in ten British Columbians suffer from kidney disease and of the 3,500 patients on dialysis, 50 per cent will die before they can get a transplant. While 95 per cent of British Columbians claim to support organ donation, only 20 per cent are registered to be an organ donor. It’s an intimidating subject matter, but it’s an important conversation to have with family and friends—and your choice to donate will ultimately save lives of others. The first walk took place in Trout Lake and over $50,000 was raised over the first six walks. Since 2015, 1720 walkers have raised over $380,000. Says Katie Kershaw, coordinator of the 2016 Kidney Walk, “It’s exciting to see it all come together—connecting with that community spirit that unites us all under one common goal— and raising awareness for organ donation”. Katie, a recent TRU graduate, with an Events and Conventions Management
