Tranquille road upgrades great for the neighbourhood The City of Kamloops began extensive road, pedestrian and lighting improvements on Tranquille Road this August, but it hasn’t stopped local businesses from opening their doors everyday. North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) executive director Steven Puhallo has been out pounding the pavement to hear from his local business members about how they are coping with disruptions and to determine how the Association can help. He says that while businesses are frustrated, they understand and appreciate the long-term value of infrastructure improvements. “It’s been difficult because it’s the second year in a row dealing with this type of challenge after last year’s Overland overpass closure, but the NSBIA is working directly with affected businesses to help mitigate the disruptions as much as possible,” says Steven. “Everyone agrees that the new multi-use pathway will increase pedestrian traffic to the North Shore. This project is a great thing for our neighbourhood.” Initially scheduled to be complete by October 18, the contract has been granted an extension to November 22 to complete the project, but Steven insists the bulk of the work will be finished by the original deadline. “October 18 remains the deadline for substantial completion. This means the multiuse pathway, which is causing most of the disruption, is scheduled to be completed on time. It will be fully usable and roadways will be open, but not all of the bells and

whistles will be in place,” he explains, referring to elements like gardens, planters and other cosmetic improvements. “The completion of the light stands has been extended to November 22, but that project is not very disruptive at all and we’ve been able to maintain the flow of traffic in those areas.” Where there have been disruptions, Steven and his staff do whatever they can to help.
Acting as a liaison, the NSBIA has created an open line of communication between businesses and public works by scheduling reoccurring conference calls that business are invited to take part in and ask direct questions. “Whenever you face major infrastructure upgrades, you’re gong to run in to unforeseen difficulties, but the city staff have – continued on page 2

The City of Kamloops received the Public Works Week – Community Celebration Award during the Public Works Association of BC Annual Conference and Trade Show. This award recognizes a municipality or region that uses Public Works Week to educate and inform the public about the essential role that public works plays in the quality of community life as well as promoting the choice of public works as a career. The City of Kamloops has approximately 200 staff providing public works services that strive to ensure that infrastructure, facilities, and services that are vital to health, safety, and the wellbeing of the residents of Kamloops are maintained. The City of Kamloops was also a runner-up for the National Award.
New dialysis unit offers improved access to kidney care Health Minister Terry Lake, BC Renal Agency leaders, Interior Health representatives and renal patients recently marked completion of the new community dialysis unit that brings hemodialysis services closer to home for those in the Kamloops area. “We continue to improve the supports available to patients living with kidney disease,” said Lake. “The new community dialysis unit is already making a tremendous difference to hemodialysis patients in Kamloops and the surrounding region.” The community dialysis unit, located on the North Shore in Kamloops, allows stable kidney patients access to hemodialysis services outside of Royal Inland Hospital. The unit opened to patients last month and feedback about the new space, equipment
and focus on education has been overwhelmingly positive. “For those with kidney disease who require hemodialysis multiple times a week, managing their illness is a full-time job,” said Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone. “This new unit, with readily available parking and a central location, means improved access for patients.” Funded by the BC Renal Agency and operated by Interior Health, the community dialysis unit incorporates an involved care and patient self-management model. By focusing on education, the care providers work to empower patients to increase their independence. Patients are encouraged to set their own goals, learn new skills and gain more control over their health. “The new unit will promote inde-

pendence in a supportive environment to improve the patient’s quality of life and physical and mental well-being,” said Dr. Adeera Levin, BC Renal Agency executive director. The new facility includes an eight-station hemodialysis unit with various consultation and exam rooms and education space, as well as a central nursing and reception area. It currently serves approximately 16 patients per week, with the ability to expand
capacity as the need arises. The BC Renal Agency plans, co-ordinates and monitors the care of patients with kidney disease throughout the province. The agency collaborates with stakeholders, including Interior Health, to help ensure all patients with kidney disease in British Columbia receive effective, high-quality renal care. The community dialysis unit originally was announced last summer and is located at 797 Tranquille Road, in Kamloops.
Road improvements a challenge North Shore businesses are up to – continued from page 1 been great,” says Steven of their availability for these calls. The NSBIA has also devoted time to creating community events to keep traffic flowing through the Tranquille corridor. “Starting with Overlander Days and our We Are the North Shore advertising campaign, we have been getting the word out on behalf of our businesses,” says Steven, adding that next they have a Halloween event planned to bring residents to the area. “On October 31 participating North Shore businesses will be Halloween-ing up their store fronts and filling baskets with
candies to create Treat Street for trick-or-treaters.” And they are working directly with businesses on individual marketing and promotional ideas to entice shoppers to come to the north side of the river. “We really want to encourage North Shore residents to support North Shore businesses while we upgrade North Shore infrastructure,” emphasizes Steven. To stay up to date with the progress of the upgrades and with local business promotions, follow the NSBIA Facebook page where information is regularly posted. Rebecca Stewart

New parliamentary secretaries announced Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently announced the appointment of 12 new parliamentary secretaries to assist ministers with their parliamentary duties and continue with our Government’s efforts to create jobs and promote economic growth. “These new parliamentary secretaries will play an important role in helping our Government deliver on its commitments to Canadian taxpayers” said the Prime Minister. “Our strengthened team is broad and experienced, and will provide strong, stable government in a time of continuing economic uncertainty.” Prime Minister Harper also announced that 11 parliamentary secretaries have received new assignments. Kamloops-Thompson–Cariboo MLA

Even though bear related calls are down on average across the province in comparison to last year, WildSafeBC warns residents that the active fall season is about to heat up regarding human-bear conflicts. “We’re down about 20 per cent province-wide in terms of bear-related calls to the Conservation Officer Service Reporting line,” says Frank Ritcey, Provincial Coordinator of the WildSafeBC program. “However, that could all change with the fall season. Natural forage has been good with a long, wet spring, but the dry, hot summer could have reduced the availability of natural foods.” Bears are entering a phase of their yearly cycle called “hyperphagia,” a time when they can take in up to 20,000 calories in a single day. It is during this period that they create great stores of fat to make it through their winter hibernation period. “Garbage, unpicked fruit, bird feeders, pet food, out-
door freezers, and small livestock all become targets for the bears,” Ritcey warns. “Preventing bears from accessing these attractants will help to keep the wildlife wild and our communities safe.” Emily Lomas, Local WildSafeBC community coordinator, says the Thompson-Nicola Regional District has generally followed the same trend seen around the province. “In Merritt, for example, there were about 13 calls to the reporting line regarding bears as of the end of August. Compare that to the year previous, when there were 60 calls in the same time frame.” Lomas wants residents to expect bear activity to increase in the fall, and to continue managing any potential attractants. Since the inception of Bear Aware (the forerunner of WildSafeBC), the annual destruction of bears has dropped from about 1,000 animals a year to approximately 500 animals a year.
Celebrate World Rivers Day at Riverside Park The City of Kamloops is celebrating the 5th Annual Kamloops World Rivers Day on Sunday, September 29, near the water park at Riverside Park to increase awareness on water related issues. World Rivers Day is a free, family event starting at 12:00 pm and going until 5:00 pm. Musical guest Paul Filek will be attending along with guest speakers, free face painting and a bouncy castle for the kids. Additionally, throughout the day there will be various activities and interactive games for the whole family, such as making your own personalized button. Everyone will have opportunities to win water saving gadgets and the chance to “fish” for prizes. There will be a grand prize draw for
two “Try SCUBA” passes, courtesy of Ocean Pacific Watersports, for those who complete the event passport. Booths will be set up by local not-for-profit agencies and businesses to share information on how they support the environment and promote sustainability within our community. Participating organizations include: BC Hydro – Power Smart Outreach, BC Wildlife Park, Big Little Science Centre, City of Kamloops, Arborists,
ECOSmart and Integrated Pest Management, Kamloops Museum and Archives, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Enactus TRU, Kamloops Naturalist Club, Ministry of Forest, Land and Natural Resources (Fish and Wildlife), ThompsonNicola Regional District and Wildsafe BC. The event initially began in 1980, when Mark Angelo founded BC Rivers Day. In 2005, the event expanded to the entire world, creat-
ing World Rivers Day. With close to 100,000 people participating in British Columbia alone, World Rivers Day will continue to increase awareness of water-related issues and promote core values associated with sustainability, conservation, and river stewardship. For more information about the event, please contact Jaimi Garbutt, Environmental Educator, City of Kamloops at 250828-3377.

Author tells of hearing-assist dog The TNRD Library System is hosting a free event with Kamloops author Dennis Robertson at the Kamloops Library, Wednesday, September 25 at 7:00 pm. Robertson will be reading and discussing his latest book, Crackers... Come Hear, which chronicles the adventures Robertson shared with his hearing-assist dog. The book, printed at Overlander Press on the North Shore, is a local tale that countless people in the Kamloops area are sure to recognize. Robertson and his four-legged, caped friend Crackers the Hearing-Assist Dog are well known to many Kamloops residents, businesses, schools and organizations. Serving as Robertson’s ears for more than 14 years, Crackers accompanied Robertson everywhere, alerting him to the sounds of the hearing world that Robertson would have otherwise missed due to his profound hearing loss. Robertson captures the heartwarming and often hilarious adventures the two experienced over the dog’s lifetime of loyalty. Readers will be moved as they experience the transformation Robertson goes through as he learns to live with his disability with the help of his devoted little dog with big ears. The event is free, but seating is limited. Please call the Kamloops Library to reserve a spot.

Kamloops Chamber’s seminar tackles hot topic It’s the first time the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce’s Social Issues Committee has put on a seminar for Chamber members, and after the recent sold out session, it certainly won’t be the last. “Our Social Issues Committee has hit a homerun with this seminar,” says Aleece Laird, chair of the Chamber’s committee. The topic of How to Deal with Suspected Employee Impairment in the Workplace came from the
Committee upon reaching out to the business community for topics they wanted more information about. “Judging from the discussion generated in the room and the questions posed to our speakers, the session proved that not only do we have a need to help inform our members with information on how to address social issues within their businesses, but that we also have the people right here in Kamloops
to provide that expert advice and information,” adds Aleece. The key speakers for the twohour information session were Debora Sloat of Simply Communicating, Don Anderson of TQM Consulting and Hugh MacInnes of HM Law. Look for information on upcoming seminars from the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce’s Social Issues Committee in the near future.

Horse around at the Winter Fair From reining to showmanship, speed events to a flag race, the 75th Annual Provincial Winter Fair has everything for the equine enthusiast to enjoy. Held from September 27 to 30, the 4-H fair highlights agriculture and provides young people from across British Columbia an opportunity to show off their skills and knowledge of the livestock industry. Among other local clubs that will be at the fair this year are two Kamloops horse clubs: the Double “L” 4-H Horse Club and the Top Rail 4-H Horse Club. But horses aren’t the only thing you’ll find at this long-running agricultural celebration. With categories for cattle, sheep, bunnies and more, plus roping, reining and bronc riding competitions among real working cowboys, the event is a great was to spend the day or the weekend with the family learning about farm culture in our area.

Astigmatism occurs when the front surface of your eye (cornea) or the lens inside the eye is slightly irregular in shape, resulting in vision being blurred at all distances. Astigmatism is not a disease, but is actually a vision condition that is quite common. What causes astigmatism? When the front of your eye or the lens inside the eye is more oval than round, light does not focus properly on the back of your eye (retina). Astigmatism is caused by small differences in the growth and alignment of the components of the eye. In some cases, it may be hereditary or result from such factors as pressure of the eyelids on the cornea. What are signs/symptoms of astigmatism? People with severe astigmatism will usually have blurred or distorted vision. Those with mild astigmatism may experience headaches, eyestrain, fatigue or blurred vision at certain distances. How is astigmatism diagnosed? A comprehensive eye examination by your Doctor of Optometry will include tests for astigmatism.
