Tranquille road upgrades great for the neighbourhood The City of Kamloops began extensive road, pedestrian and lighting improvements on Tranquille Road this August, but it hasn’t stopped local businesses from opening their doors everyday. North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) executive director Steven Puhallo has been out pounding the pavement to hear from his local business members about how they are coping with disruptions and to determine how the Association can help. He says that while businesses are frustrated, they understand and appreciate the long-term value of infrastructure improvements. “It’s been difficult because it’s the second year in a row dealing with this type of challenge after last year’s Overland overpass closure, but the NSBIA is working directly with affected businesses to help mitigate the disruptions as much as possible,” says Steven. “Everyone agrees that the new multi-use pathway will increase pedestrian traffic to the North Shore. This project is a great thing for our neighbourhood.” Initially scheduled to be complete by October 18, the contract has been granted an extension to November 22 to complete the project, but Steven insists the bulk of the work will be finished by the original deadline. “October 18 remains the deadline for substantial completion. This means the multiuse pathway, which is causing most of the disruption, is scheduled to be completed on time. It will be fully usable and roadways will be open, but not all of the bells and

whistles will be in place,” he explains, referring to elements like gardens, planters and other cosmetic improvements. “The completion of the light stands has been extended to November 22, but that project is not very disruptive at all and we’ve been able to maintain the flow of traffic in those areas.” Where there have been disruptions, Steven and his staff do whatever they can to help.

Acting as a liaison, the NSBIA has created an open line of communication between businesses and public works by scheduling reoccurring conference calls that business are invited to take part in and ask direct questions. “Whenever you face major infrastructure upgrades, you’re gong to run in to unforeseen difficulties, but the city staff have – continued on page 2
