The Epiphany Nervous Students Discover Spelldown’s True Prize

Inside the shop, we shed our jackets and exchange pleasantries with our acquaintances. Well, the adults do.

Right now, the teenage spellers look rather stiff and aren’t conversing much. In fact, if some enterprising electric company were to attach their batteries to this bunch collectively, the nerves could light up Chicago.

Poised, yes. And intelligent, too. Through the afternoon, it becomes apparent that they have a sound knowledge of these words. The winner, rather than being the one with the highest IQ, the superior memory or even the best study habits, may be the individual who can best steady his nerves.

Kenny V. Miller, also known as 6-foot Kenny, and his wife, Edna, are hosting us today.

Kenny gets everybody seated. The students are on benches in the center of the assembly. Their parents and teachers are to their left and right. The judges, David Yoder, Ray Wingard and Lori Wingard, preside from a table at the front. Acting as the pronouncer today, I am seated at the end of the judges’ table.

Kenny leads us in prayer and in singing “Amazing Grace.”

He goes through the rules briefly. It’s time.

We make it through the practice round with only a few nervous missteps. Then we begin our run for the roses in earnest. Many words are spelled correctly, but a few are not and the number begins dwindling. Discussing it later, the talking heads agree that most of the eliminated spellers are perfectly able to spell the words and simply made nervous mistakes.

Like Joshua Hochstetler. He is later incredulous that he put an “e” on the end of “saliva.” So it goes. He’ll probably never forget it.

One young lady from Forks Valley has plenty of presence of mind, though, to keep the pronouncer on his toes.

“Species” is her word and the pronouncer gives it to her.

“Species,” she repeats, but pronounces it differently. She proceeds to spell it correctly, pronounces it her way again and retakes her place in the line. The pronouncer, curious, circles the word and looks it up when there is a break. Yep, the girl was right.

Finally, we get down to six contestants. We take a break and the rules change. Now, in order to eliminate a speller, the next speller must correctly spell the misspelled word.

We grind on. A few more fine spellers drop out and finally only two remain, a girl from Plainview and my own lone eighth-grader.

Much to her chagrin, my student soon trips up and only puts one “r” in “warrior.” Plainview’s pupil pounces and becomes the champion.

The three top spellers are allowed to choose a brand new storybook as their prize. We’re not much for trophies.

The real trophy, though, the true prize? It’s the memories, friend, the memories.

Memories of my own spelling bee come back as we get set to begin. Nerve-stricken, my classmate misspelled “mop” in the practice round. He did not realize it until he returned to the line-up and a fellow student informed him.

The spellers stand and form a ring around the room. This wheel rotates slowly as the words are spelled. An eighthgrade lady from Blue Ridge leads things off.
