But if a good old-fashioned spring clean doesn’t quite cut the mustard, then how about a renovation project instead? Nothing gets the juices flowing like a household project, and we have some great ideas for you on page 33…
From renovating your stairs to building a garden bar, there are a wide range of local companies in North Wales that can help you take your home to the next level. All you need to do is come up with a fabulous idea and then let them do the rest!
And while you are watching the builders take the strain, why not kick back and read about some of the fabulous volunteers that we are so lucky to have here in North Wales?
The Rhoscolyn National Coastwatch Institution on the Anglesey Coastal path is staffed by volunteers that help to keep our seas safe. They do fabulous work and you can read all about them on page 51.
And volunteers don’t have to be human either – on page 25 you’ll find the touching tale of Buddi the Pets As Therapy (PAT) dog who helped people from all across the region. Poor Buddi is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on and his tale is one that is bound to inspire – rest in peace Buddi.

The spectacular Menai Strait separates the Isle of Anglesey from Gwynedd. Home to the notorious ‘Swellies’, which can reach speeds of 4 metres per second during spring tides, the Strait is home to unexpected marine life. As the Strait is sheltered from wave action, yet sees rapid tidal flows, it makes an unusual habitat. One rare species that has been spotted in the waters around Penmon in June is bioluminescent plankton. Making for an absolutely stunning sight, it’s no wonder that it has been dubbed the “Northern Lights of the ocean”…

A DAY TO REMEMBER
This June marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the beginning of the liberation of northern Europe from Nazi tyranny. Adrian Hughes of Llandudno’s Home Front Museum explains the role Llandudno and Conwy played in this historic military operation.
Mulberry Harbour
Today locals and holidaymakers walk their dogs, paddle in the water and laze on the beach at Conwy Morfa, but many do not realise the role this area played in helping rid Europe of the tyrannous Nazi regime. In October 1942, the local council was contacted by Holloway Brothers, a London building contractor, with orders to requisition land at Conwy Morfa for ‘urgent war work’ which was a ‘vital secret’. With the land secured, work started on sections of a prototype floating harbour designed by Bangor born engineer Hugh Iorys Hughes for use in the future invasion of mainland Europe. When the Allies opened up that new front, they were convinced that they would not be able to get all the men, equipment and supplies ashore without such a system. Commodore John Hughes-Hallett, Naval Chief of Staff, remarked ‘If we can’t capture a harbour, we must take one with us’. Over 700 workers including carpenters, steel erectors, welders and labourers were employed at the Morfa.
In May 1943, the first of the experimental ‘Hippo’ sections was launched into the Conwy estuary. Residents in Deganwy knew
of the impending launch because sandbags were piled up along the promenade in case the 3,200-ton concrete and steel leviathan caused a tidal wave. Once launched, the individual parts making up Hughes’ prototype harbour were towed to Scotland and joined two other experimental temporary harbours for trial. Hugh Iorys Hughes’ design was not chosen.
In June 1943 the council was informed that the land at Conwy Morfa would no longer be required after the successful launch of the prototypes. However, in September that year Holloway Brothers and Joseph Parks & Son of Northwich were awarded the contract to construct sections of the now finalised artificial harbour design and the decision was reversed. Between September 1943 and April 1944, pierheads fabricated at Joseph Park’s Cheshire foundry were assembled at Conwy Morfa, floated and towed to the south coast of England. On the Normandy beaches, these were connected together with sections of roadway built elsewhere and became operational just four days after D-Day, 6 June 1944. It is estimated that in the ten months it was operational over 2.5 million troops, 50,000 vehicles and 6 million tons of supplies were landed
the Mulberry harbour.
‘Any Gum Chum’
Daily, thousands of motorists pass by the red brick, cuboid building at the Black Cat roundabout, Llandudno Junction that was built in 1942 by the Ministry of Food as a cold food store. The site was chosen due to its central location in North Wales and its proximity to the main line railway. In 1944, thousands of American troops descended on Conwy, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Bangor in the build up to D-Day in June that year. This led to an extensive logistical operation by the US Army to supply its troops with everything they needed and they took over part of the cold store. The 308th Quartermaster Railhead Company oversaw bringing supplies into North Wales, even bringing their own steam locomotives with them. Black American troops were segregated from their white contemporaries and billeted around the cold storage depot at Llandudno Junction. One incident in summer 1944 stuck in the memory of a Llandudno man all his life. John Jones was waiting for his cousin to alight the bus outside ‘The Clock’ public house on Mostyn Street, Llandudno, when a fight broke out between white American servicemen. Immediately a jeep pulled up, laden with American military police, who grabbed a black GI and started to truncheon him without mercy, even though he had no connection to the original fracas.
HMS Llandudno
Wars are exceptionally expensive and during the Second World War the government implored people to invest in government accounts by buying War Bonds, Savings Bonds, Defence Bonds and Savings Certificates. While people were encouraged to invest year-round, there was also an annual savings week with a specific target. ‘Warship Week’ took place in Llandudno in November 1941 with over £222,000 raised, enough to buy a Royal Navy minesweeper and HMS Llandudno was adopted. Undoubtedly the minesweeper’s finest hour came on D-Day, 6th June 1944, when, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Frank Darnborough, she swept a channel allowing soldiers of the British 3rd Infantry Division to land on Sword beach as part of the Allied invasion.
The pilot who watched the invasion Flight Lieutenant Bob Weighill, the son of a Llandudno newsagent, watched as the first American troops landed on the beaches of Normandy as part of the D-Day landings. He was flying a Mustang fighter and was tasked with spotting the fall of shot from the light cruiser, HMS Glasgow, as she bombarded enemy positions behind Omaha beach. He later told the BBC:
Advert for the National Savings Warship Week in November 1941. Plaque to commemorate the building of parts of the vital Mulberry harbour was unveiled by Major General A G E Stewart Cox DFC on the anniversary of D-Day, 1978.
“I stayed at 1,000 feet and watched five of the naval vessels, which were about a mile from the beach and turned broadside on, proceeding to belch flame and destruction. By
this time, the first boat was almost ashore, and, as I watched it, the front came down and the men inside jumped into the water and ran towards the beach. It was a wonderful moment when I reported that the first men had actually landed.”
Robert ‘Bob’ Weighill was born in the Midlands and educated at Wirral Grammar School. He remained with the RAF after the war and eventually rose to the rank of Air Commodore. A talented sportsman, Bob played rugby union and was capped by England four times.
Made in Llandudno
Both the Winter Gardens entertainment venue and Creams Coaches were Llandudno institutions for much of the 20th Century; they were owned by the Brierley family. To service the fleet of coaches (which as an aside were requisitioned at the outbreak of war) the family owned well-equipped workshops on land adjoining Queens Road and Conway Road on the outskirts of the town. Here in the early years of the war, engine and wing mounting sockets were made primarily for A. V. Roe, the manufacturers of iconic planes like the Lancaster Bomber. In total over two million of these sockets were made in Llandudno between 1940 and 1945.
In 1944, Brierley’s were asked to manufacture parts needed in the waterproofing of specially adapted Churchill tanks ready for the D-day landings. The military knew that it was imperative to get this armour onto the Normandy beaches as quickly as possible to destroy German bunkers and gun emplacements and to support the infantry. By waterproofing the tanks, they could be driven into the sea off landing craft and up the beaches. To achieve this the tanks needed air inlets and exhaust ducts to protrude above the water so they could be driven ashore without flooding the engines. Here in Llandudno over 500 ventilation ducts were made for that purpose in just six weeks. n
Adrian’s new book ‘Conwy’s Military Heritage’ published by Amberley is now available from all good bookshops and online. It is also available from the Home Front Museum for a special price of £10 for North Wales Magazine readers.

Baavet is a Welsh company that uses Welsh wool to make to make a world-class product right in the heart of Porthmadog. Today almost 50% of people in Britain suffer from sleep deprivation, and even more experience poor sleep. But in 1942 less than 8% of people were sleep deprived – and the really big difference is in our bedding. We all used to sleep under woollen blankets, whereas now we almost universally sleep under polyester, feather or duck down duvets – all of which make you too hot in bed. To sleep well our body temperature needs to go down during the night to allow us deep sleep where the body regenerates cells and fights illness. So what’s different about sleeping under a wool duvet? Put simply, wool regulates body temperature. It allows our temperature to cool down during the night leading to peaceful sleep. It also wicks away moisture from the body reducing sweating, and is dust mite resistant and anti bacterial – making it ideal for bedding. Baavet has reinvented the blanket and encased the wool in high quality cotton so it’s not itchy, heavy or old fashioned. www.baavet.co.uk

I recently had the privilege of meeting Andy Williams, not only a hero as a firefighter with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, but also Mayor of Wrexham, and dedicated community volunteer of many years standing, to learn more about his celebrated Pets As Therapy (PAT) dog, Buddi, and their inspirational work together. As Andy spoke to me about his life and times with his little dog, my pen flew, gathering his thoughts and memories, and filling page after page. So here goes, Buddi. I hope I tell your story well…
Buddi comes home
family took Buddi into their home without a second thought, and the rest, as they say, is history.
This cute Lhasa Apso came into the family’s lives around nine years ago, when he was just a year old. Andy’s son, Luke, had regularly walked Buddi for a local lady, when he came home one day to say that she was moving away, and was looking to rehome him.
Andy and his
The family soon noticed Buddi’s remarkable natural affinity for comforting others with his own gentle form of solace, often laying his head gently on the site of a person’s injury, or where they were feeling pain. One day, Bev, who works as a nurse, saw a pet dog being allowed onto her hospital ward to visit its sick owner. Seeing the positive impact this had, she realised that Buddi would make a fantastic therapy dog, and she shared her idea with Andy. Recognising the potential too, he applied to the Pets As Therapy charity, and he and Buddi were invited for an interview in Oswestry. They passed with flying colours.
Buddi, the pets as therapy dog
Andy and Buddi were soon out visiting patients, beginning with Nightingale House Hospice, where Buddi would sit with cancer patients, and later, their visits took them to Wrexham Maelor Hospital, where Andy and Buddi would eventually make hospital calls at least once, and often, twice a week. Buddi adored his work, although he never saw it as that, and would make funny little snorts and sneezes of excitement whenever Andy told him they were off out to do some Pet Therapy work! He even had his very own hospital pass,
allowing him access to all areas of the building, and into ambulances outside A&E, to reassure children during procedures such as having blood taken. Remarkably, he would even sit and comfort people as their loved one’s life support was switched off.
Buddi’s unstinting work was recognised with the Betsi Cadwaldr University Health Board Volunteer of the Year Award, in 2022.
Buddi And Smokey Paws
Around three years ago, Wrexham Fire Station received a generous donation of an animal resuscitation kit from the charity, Smokey Paws. These masks have been specially designed to deliver an efficient and directed flow of oxygen to pets in the event of smoke inhalation, massively increasing their chance of survival.
After meeting him and Buddi at an event, Vanessa, owner of Daleside Veterinary Practice, approached Andy with an offer to sponsor Buddi and to become his personal vet, free of charge. Together with the help of Buddi and a sand dog mannequin, she also delivered a programme of training sessions to Wrexham fire crews in the application and use of the Smokey Paws apparatus. Now, Andy is raising money to equip all fire
TO DONATE:
Andy has set up a Go Fund Me page, Buddi’s Smokey Paws Legacy, where people can donate money towards the purchase of Smokey Paws Kits. If an individual or business would like to sponsor a kit outright at just £95.00, a commemorative certificate will be issued for each one purchased. Your donation will help continue Buddi’s mission of compassion and support: thank you. Any excess funds will support North Wales Blood Bikes, where Andy generously volunteers his time as a bike rider, and Guide Dogs Cymru, which Andy is supporting by raising money for a guide dog named Blaze, in honour of the bravery of the firefighters who bravely enter the thick, black smoke of a fire.
engines in the region with this vital equipment, enabling the crews to help family pets in life-or-death situations.
Goodbye, Buddi
Tragically, the family’s world was turned upside down at the beginning of March this year. Early one Saturday morning, they could see that Buddi was clearly not feeling well, so Andy contacted Vanessa, who called him in. An agonising two hours later, Bev received a phone call from Vanessa, asking the family to come in as soon as possible, as they had a “very poorly boy”. During investigations it had been discovered that poor Buddi had a huge tumour which was bleeding into his belly, and was inoperable.
Devastated, the family held and stroked the little dog as he gently slipped away. Through his tears, Andy noticed that flakes of snow, always Buddi’s favourite weather, had just started to fall - the first and last of this year so far. Via Buddi’s social media pages, Andy received hundreds of messages of sympathy from followers, even some from as far away as New Zealand and Canada, to express their sorrow at the little dog’s passing. n
With special thanks to Jo Smith whose idea it was to commemorate Buddi. Jo is the proprietor of Hope Mountain Retreat B&B in Cymau near Wrexham, and Chair of the Flintshire Tourism Association
Buddi’s Legacy
Ultimately, this story is all about the incredible impact of Buddi, the wonderful therapy dog who touched the lives of many, many hundreds of people. It is a heart-warming and moving tale of kindness and compassion, and of the pure and selfless love of animals, who give totally, and ask nothing in return. Whether sitting with a patient on a hospital bed, or entertaining and delighting children, Buddi’s unconditional love and companionship brought comfort and ease to those suffering illness, trauma, or loneliness.
There have been times when I have been moved to tears whilst writing this, times when I had goosebumps, and times when I have smiled. Thank you, Buddi, it has been an honour and a privilege to tell your story. Sleep easy now little one, your work is done.

The Timber Cooperative Timber – the sustainable choice for building? When produced in the right way and used for the right job, The Timber Cooperative certainly believe so. Near Caernarfon, a collective of woodland and woodworking enthusiasts set out on a mission: To give local individuals and businesses the option to purchase quality timber in an informed and environmentally-conscious way, while simultaneously creating a fair, respectful and dynamic working environment. Beginning by operating their own sawmill, their aim was to be able to cut a wide range of timber products while shortening their supply chains and effectively eliminating waste. Always evolving, they have most recently expanded their team and skillset to include secondary processing of timber, involving small-scale kiln drying, planing and profiling, and even charring. By sourcing their timber from local woodlands (FSC-accredited) The Timber Cooperative aim to ensure that all of their products have the lowest possible carbon footprint, minimise the pressure on global woodland habitats, and support the local economy through the maintenance of related jobs. Now selling a range of timber and cladding, The Timber Cooperative is the sustainable choice for all of your home renovation needs. timber.coop

Air Conditioning Heats as well as Cools!
Heat pumps are integral to an air conditioning system, transferring heat from one environment to another via a refrigerant.
Heat pumps also offer a cost-effective heating solution - and air source heat pumps are recognised as a renewable heat technology.
In cooling mode, heat pumps work by transferring the heat from a room or internal space to the outside air, thus cooling the inside area. In reverse, heat pumps can extract latent heat from the outside air (even when the temperature is down to -20°C) and pump it inside to heat indoor spaces.

Menai Heating
Improve your homes energy efficiency with and the ECO4 grant scheme
In a time when environmental sustainability has become essential, Menai Heating’s priority lays in helping homes in North Wales transform into eco-friendly havens. They are dedicated to making a lasting impact on the planet and the lives of their customers.
Under the ECO4 scheme, energy companies are required to provide funding for a range of energy efficient measures, such as insulation, heating upgrades and renewable technologies. These are installed without any financial burden, and Menai Heating even offer a free survey to any houses that qualify.
The grant is specifically tailored to assist those who need it most. These measures are available to households with a gross income of less than £31,000. Additionally, they are offered to individuals identified by their doctor or GP as lowincome and vulnerable, particularly if an occupant has health conditions such as cardiovascular or respiratory issues, is immunosuppressed, or has limited mobility.
FREE AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP
Air source heat pumps efficiently regulate indoor temperature by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it indoors. They operate similarly to a refrigerator but in reverse, using minimal electricity to generate up to three units of heat for energy unit consumed. This makes them eco-friendly and cost effective for heating buildings, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional systems.
FREE SOLAR PANELS
Solar panels represent another integral aspect of Menai Heating’s ECO4 grant measures program. By harnessing the power of sunlight, solar panels generate clean, renewable energy that can be used to power homes and reduce reliance
on traditional grid electricity. Not only do solar panels help homeowners reduce their carbon footprint, but they also offer considerable financial benefits through reducing energy bills.
FREE INSULATION
By properly insulating properties, homeowners can minimize the need for excessive heating or cooling, thereby lowering energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Menai Heating’s team of experts ensures that every home receives tailored insulation solutions to maximize efficiency and comfort.
In addition to the ECO4 grant scheme, they also offers private installations tailored to individual needs. Whether you believe you qualify for the grant scheme or simply seek to enhance your home’s energy efficiency, their team are there to assist you every step of the way.
Menai Heating also understands that every home is unique, which is why they take a personalised approach to every installation project. Their team ensures that all work is carried out to the highest standards of craftsmanship and professionalism, with a focus on delivering lasting results that exceed your expectations.

Tour de force
North Wales is proud to be hosting the opening stages of the 2024 Tour of Britain Women…
An adrenaline-fuelled event is coming to North Wales this month as the 2024 Tour of Britain Women stages power through the region.
The Grand Départ takes place in Welshpool on Thursday 6th June, with Llandudno hosting the stage finish on day one before Wrexham welcomes the world’s top female riders and teams for both the start and finish of stage two.
Taking place from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th June, the event will feature four tough stages of racing, in what will be the first major international stage race delivered by British Cycling Events.
Hundreds of thousands of fans will line the streets for what is the nation’s biggest free-to-attend sporting event, as the country gears up for another thrilling summer of cycling.
The route
This year’s race will feature a number of familiar start and finish locations which have successfully hosted major international events in recent years.
The race will begin in Welshpool, situated in the heart of midWales. Welshpool hosted the thrilling finish of stage four of the 2022 Women’s Tour, where Australia’s Grace Brown (FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope) sprinted to victory. The stage will see riders head north to the picturesque seaside town of Llandudno, in what will be a challenging start to the race.
Stage two will see riders stay in Wales for a start and finish in Wrexham, which also featured in the 2022 Women’s Tour. The rolling route will take in a series of challenging climbs in the dramatic Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The caravan then will cross the Welsh border to the northwest of England, where Warrington will host both the start and finish of stage three on Saturday, with a flatter route that will favour the sprinters. Warrington welcomed the men’s Tour of Britain in 2021, where Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) claimed a memorable stage win.
The race will conclude in Greater Manchester, as part of the city region’s European Capital of Cycling celebrations.
Riders will depart from the National Cycling Centre, the home of British Cycling, before taking in some of the region’s challenging climbs before they reach the finish line in Leigh, where the race winner will be crowned.
“A monumental effort”
The race route has been designed and agreed in just ten weeks, when a new vision was launched for major cycling events in Britain, thanks to the hard work and support of an experienced team of event staff.
“While there is still a great deal of work to do, today is another important milestone in our journey and reflective of the enormous goodwill and support which major road cycling events continue to enjoy,” commented Jon Dutton OBE, CEO of British Cycling. “Our primary focus has been to deliver a safe and competitive race in 2024, but we remain every bit as determined to harness the race’s spotlight to make a real impact in the communities which it touches, and know that is a vision which resonates strongly in conversations with prospective commercial partners and hosts.”
Rod Ellingworth, who was announced as Tour of Britain Race Director in March this year, added: “It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past ten weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women. The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I’m sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout.”
Earlier this month, British Cycling announced that the Tour of Britain Men would be delivered over six days in 2024, with an ambition to bring future parity to the two national tours, following the alignment of the event names in 2024.
“An opportunity to showcase the best of our area” “Wales and cycling go hand in hand, with our spectacular scenery and routes providing elite and recreational cyclists alike with both challenge and enjoyment,” said Welsh Government Economy Secretary, Jeremy Miles. “This is a
welcome return to Wales for this fantastic event and provides an excellent opportunity to showcase Welshpool, Llandudno, Wrexham and the surrounding area to an ever-growing cycling audience. We are very pleased to have been able to support the event and look forward to providing a warm ‘Croeso’ to all in June.”
Councillor Nigel Williams, Lead member for Economy and Regeneration, Wrexham, expanded by saying: “Once again the sporting spotlight will be on Wrexham as we continue to be a welcoming location for national events. After the success of last year’s Tour of Britain we have another opportunity to showcase the best of our area and this will bring huge benefits to the local economy.
“I know many enthusiasts will be looking forward to the event and to seeing the elite of British cycling as they race through the area,” he concluded. “It will give many within the city centre and surrounding areas the opportunity to give the cyclists a warm Welsh welcome to Wrexham as they pass through.” n

The Rhoscolyn NCI are the ‘eyes and ears’ of the Anglesey coast. Station manager Trevor Sturrock explains more…
Situated on the West coast of Anglesey, flanking the Anglesey Coastal path, the Rhoscolyn National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) station is set 61 m (200 ft) up on the headland looking out towards the Llŷn Peninsular.
There are spectacular views up to South Stack, down as far as Llanddwyn Island and on a clear day to the Wicklow mountains in the Southwest and the Isle of Man to the North.
Rhoscolyn NCI opened in 2011 in an old Coast Guard station and is manned by 34 volunteers 365 days a year. We come from all walks of life and are mainly retirees living both locally and further away.
Volunteers must undertake full in-house training to become certified watchkeepers, which in the main is done whilst on watch; no prior knowledge nor experience of the sea is necessary. All that is required is good vision, a willingness to learn and to be available for at least two half-day watches per month. Watchkeepers are trained to deal with emergencies offering a variety of skills and experience, and full training by the National Coastwatch ensures that high standards are adhered to.
In return we offer camaraderie, a new life experience, an accomplishment that you have potentially saved someone’s life, and not forgetting some social events as well.
The mission of the NCI is to “Save lives at Sea”. Rhoscolyn NCI is a Declared Facility Status organisation, an integral part of the National Search and Rescue (SAR) structure which includes, the Coastguard, RNLI, the Anglesey SAR team (Môn-SAR), and all other rescue groups served by the 999 Emergency Services. We are the ‘eyes and ears’ along the

coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a visual and listening watch for vessels, craft, and persons on and in the sea around our coastline.
We notify the coastguard if we spot anything of concern or in potential danger. We also look out for walkers, climbers, and other users of the coastal path. A daily logbook is kept noting all observations of vessels and other significant sightings, and in the case of an emergency, certain protocols must be adhered to under the direction of the Maritime and Coastguard agency.
Our busiest time of year is during the summer months, with increasing numbers of visitors, holidaymakers, and leisure users both on land and sea. To aid us, the station is equipped with charts, maps, navigational equipment, binoculars, telephone, a global ship Automatic Identification System (AIS),
Visitors to the station are most welcome and watchkeepers are very happy to answer questions when not busy. We form part of a national organisation with 60 other stations based around the Welsh and English coastline, and we are totally self-funded, all donations are very gratefully received.
We welcome all inquiries from people interested in becoming volunteers so when you are next passing by, please call in to see what we do. n

The social supermarket
Situated in Colwyn Bay, Y Pantri is Wales’ first ‘social supermarket’ service…
400,000 tonnes of food is wasted in Wales annually, with a significant portion still suitable for consumption. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of the Welsh population are facing food poverty. By saving just 1% of the annual wastage, this surplus could yield over 9 million meals – the equivalent of 3 meals for every person in Wales.
FareShare Cymru, established in 2010, repurposes surplus food by redistributing it to local charities and community groups; turning a significant environmental issue into a positive social solution. Made up of a team of amazing staff and volunteers, surplus food is picked, packed, and driven across Wales. The groups they work with then further distribute surplus through various schemes including collection points, community kitchen projects, pantries and cooking classes. One of the projects supported by both FareShare Cymru and FareShare Merseyside is ‘Y Pantri’, a project that offers a forward-thinking, innovative approach to food redistribution.
About Y Pantri
Established by St Giles Cymru in 2023, Y Pantri is situated in Colwyn Bay and is Wales’s first ‘social supermarket’ service. This service was set up in response to the ever-growing cost-of-living crisis, as an attempt to lift members of the local community out of poverty indefinitely. It currently supports over 75 people, with 121 trained experts on hand to offer advice and referrals to service users.
For £3.50 a week, Y Pantri offers members of the community choice of ten items, colour-coded in terms of retail pricing. The selection is vast, some of which have been provided by FareShare, with there being something for everyone. The instore experience encourages confidence and independence amongst its users, ultimately helping them to get back on their feet with a sense of control over their situation.
Y Pantri was established by St Giles Cymru, which allows the facility to go beyond food distribution, with the charity providing additional services like offering advice and support
via Wales’s peer advice network. Similarly, they work to support both people at risk of criminal exploitation and those who have been caught within the criminal justice system, offering support and aid in the rebuilding of their lives. Furthermore, a ‘wrap-around’ approach is taken regarding families, going beyond the surface-level issue of limited access to food for families and tackling other issues such as employment.
How FareShare works with Y Pantri
Stacey Brady, Y Pantri’s co-ordinator, discussed the “really good relationship” between FareShare Cymru and St Giles.
“We reached out to them when we knew Y Pantri would be opening in North Wales. The staff and volunteers do an amazing job. We now have four deliveries a week, which is important to us as a Pantri to be able to deliver the goods to our clientele. Without the help of FareShare, we wouldn’t be able to fulfil the needs surrounding food poverty in the area. Some of the goods we received are expensive, and our local community wouldn’t be able to afford this, some foods they have never seen, or know what to do with. FareShare have opened opportunities for people to taste new and a different processes of cooking. They cater for vegan, vegetarian, glucose free etc, which is amazing.”
FareShare Cymru and our regional partners have made, and continue to make, a significant impact on projects like this. n

Renewable energy systems for your home
Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.
An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.
Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

SUPPORT A CHARITY, FIND A BARGAIN AND HELP REDUCE CLOTHING WASTE
Did you know the amount of clothing already in existence is enough for the next six generations of people in the world?
It’s one of the many reasons to support the recycling of clothes through charity shops, such as North Wales-based St David’s Hospice which opened a new donation centre in Llandudno Junction earlier this year.
Margaret Hollings, commercial director at St David’s Hospice, said the new initiative was going very well.
“The launch of the new hospice donation centre and shop in Llandudno Junction has been a huge success,” she said. “The new shop is proving really popular locally and the quality of donations which people have dropped off for us to sell has been phenomenal. We are truly grateful to our wonderful supporters.
“We were delighted to work with the team at Lanyon Bowdler on this new instruction for the hospice and were so pleased to invite Juana and Edward to the opening back in January. We also appreciate the ongoing charitable support that Lanyon Bowdler gives to the hospice, which is incredibly generous.”
Margaret said that as well as generating funds for the charity, giving second-hand clothes a new lease of life is an important thing to do.
“According to the British Fashion Council, there are enough clothing garments in circulation to clothe the next six generations of people,” she added. “At St David’s Hospice we are proud to be part of a more circular economy, by serving our local communities with high-quality, fashionable secondhand goods at very reasonable prices.
“For all donations being given to the hospice via the new donation centre, we will sell them in our network of 15 shops to raise funds for essential respite and end of life care in the communities of North West Wales. For more unique items, we will sell these on our eBay page to a wider audience.”
Juana Eastwood, of Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Conwy, who was instructed to act on behalf of the charity in relation to the building lease, said she was pleased to see the new centre doing so well.
“St David’s Hospice is a fantastic charity doing such important work for people here in North Wales, and we were delighted to be able to help with the lease of their new building,” she said.
“I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening, along with colleagues from the commercial property team at Lanyon Bowdler, and it was fascinating to see what a wide range of items are on sale.
“I would highly recommend going along to see what the shop has to offer – you might be surprised by what you find, and every sale makes a real difference to a very worthwhile charity.”
The shop and donation centre can be found at 44 Cae’r Llynen, Llandudno Junction, LL31 9LS, and is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday. n

The UK ISA slides into view
One of the many well-trailed announcements in the Spring Budget was the launch of a UK ISA. However, both its arrival and interest may be uncertain.
Alongside the Budget, the Treasury published a consultation paper on a possible fifth ISA variant, the UK ISA. To quote the paper, the rationale behind the UK ISA is “to give people the opportunity to invest and benefit from the UK’s vibrant capital markets and high-growth companies”.
What the new ISA will look like is unclear at present:
J The maximum contribution is set at £5,000 per tax year, in addition to the current £20,000 general ISA limit. By an odd coincidence, that general limit would now be a little over £25,000 had it been index-linked since its last increase in April 2017.
J Investments could include shares in UK-registered and -listed companies, corporate bonds issued by those companies, and UK government bonds and collective funds (e.g. unit trusts). Similar to the Personal Equity Plans (PEPs) launched in 1988, the government may require at least 75% of collective fund holdings to be in UK companies.
J Holdings of cash would be restricted, with possible disincentives such as tax levied on any interest received –again similarly to PEPs.
J To maintain the UK focus of the new plan, transfers out would be limited to other UK ISAs. The government is undecided on transfers in and is seeking views: they could be banned or unrestricted.
J Whereas the one-ISA-of-each-type-each-year has at last
been abandoned for general ISAs, the consultation paper suggests that it could reappear for the UK ISA because it “could be simpler for investors…[and] also lower the risks of investors subscribing over the UK ISA limit”.
The latest HMRC data show that just over 800,000 investors subscribed the maximum to a stocks and shares ISA in 2021/22. Investment Association data, which is less comprehensive, shows that in 2022/23 there was a net outflow from ISAs of £2,339 million, a trend that has grown since, with only April 2023 seeing a net inflow.
These figures suggest limited potential interest in the UK ISA, if and when it launches. Meanwhile, the existing ISA looks a superior offering as the new tax year gets underway: better tax benefits (no tax on cash interest), much greater investment flexibility and a £20,000 investment limit. n
Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. The value of your investment and any income from it can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Investing in shares should be regarded as a long-term investment and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances.

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve (which connects the eye to the brain), is damaged due to fluid build-up inside the eye. It is most common in adults over 70. It can lead to loss of vision if it’s not diagnosed and treated early. Having regular eye tests is important. Glaucoma does not usually cause any symptoms in early stages but in later stages it affects the edges of your vision (peripheral vision). Many people do not realise they have glaucoma, and it’s often only picked up during a routine eye test with an optician. The most common cause of raised pressure is the malfunction of the drainage channel in the eye (Open Angle Glaucoma). Very occasionally, glaucoma can develop suddenly (Angle Closure Glaucoma) and cause redness of the eye, headache, halos, reduced vision with intense eye pain, nausea and vomiting. This is a medical emergency that may require immediate treatment, in which case go to your nearest A&E as soon as possible. Treatment depends on the type of glaucoma and can be either eye drops, laser treatment or surgery. It is not possible to reverse any loss of vision that occurred before the diagnosis, but treatment can help stop your vision getting worse. You will need regular appointments to monitor your condition and check that the treatment is working. NWESC can offer you regular monitoring and treatment of your glaucoma. www.northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

Mae Llyfrgelloedd Pethau Benthyg Cymru yn cynnig gwasanaeth sydd ar gael i bawb / Benthyg Cymru’s Libraries of Things aim to provide a service that’s accessible to everyone
Libraries of Things are springing up throughout North Wales, where local people can borrow whatever they need cheaply and easily – helping to keep items in use as long as possible.
Why buy things you might use only once or twice, when you could borrow them instead?
Benthyg Cymru is a non-profit organisation that supports communities to establish Libraries of Things throughout Wales, where it’s possible to borrow everything from gardening tools and DIY equipment to party costumes.
The organisation has helped establish more than 20 community Libraries of Things, including ones in Bethesda, Penygroes, Llanfyllin and Llanidloes. Since 2020 borrowers in Wales have checked out over 13,000 items, saving around £300,000 on the cost of buying new, and preventing 160,000kg of carbon emissions.
Catrin Wager, Benthyg Cymru’s North and West Wales development officer, says: “We all have stuff cluttering up our houses that we we’ll never use again. How much better for us and our planet if we could pool our resources, providing access to things we could borrow and then give back?”
Sharing not only keeps items in regular use as long as possible, promoting a more sustainable way of living; it also makes financial sense. Borrowing fees are kept low, so that things are available for far less than they would cost to buy new or second-hand.
With the support of the Welsh Government, Benthyg Cymru aims to help more community groups start their own Library of Things – making borrowing as easy as going out to buy a loaf of bread.

Explore this former quarry site which now teems with wildlife and insect sculptures!
Marford Quarry, near Wrexham, was opened in 1927 to provide materials for the construction of the Mersey Tunnel, but quarrying ceased in 1971. The site originally contained the site of Rofft Mount, a medieval motte and bailey castle. Now it’s an unexpected oasis of wildness and North Wales Wildlife Trust nature reserve. Follow the tree-lined paths and find rare plants like wild liquorice, special invertebrates, slow worms and gorgeous butterflies such as the purple hairstreak. Can you find all the wooden sculptures along the way?
Things you need to know
The route is easy-going, and even suitable for allterrain pushchairs.
Directions
Marford Quarry is located 2.5 miles north-east of Wrexham. Heading south into the village of Marford on the B5445, turn right onto Pant Lane in the village centre (immediately after the Red Lion pub). There is free parking at Maes y Pant car park, approximately 415 metres down Pant Lane (SJ 354 551; LL12 8HB).

J Time: 1–2 hours
J Distance: 1.5 miles (2.8 km)
J OS Explorer Map: OL256
THE ROUTE:
Start
1. Turn left out of the car park onto Pant Lane and walk along the left-hand pavement until you see a finger-post pointing left (shortly after crossing Quarry Brow). Follow this lovely leafy path, noticing the huge, smooth-barked beech trees among the sycamores.
2. When you come to the junction in paths (after about 300 metres), take the right-hand path, passing a bench on the left and carrying straight on. Ignore other paths leading off the track.
3. At the next fork, take the right-hand path, which climbs steeply uphill. Notice the change in vegetation to ash, hawthorn and birch as you gain height, whilst the atmosphere becomes drier and the soil sandier. (If you wish to spot dragonflies and look for smooth newts, frogs and toads, dip down the left-hand path at the next junction to visit the pond – retrace your steps to return.)
4. The path carries on looping around the top of the reserve, skirting a fenced area. The fence prevents rabbits nibbling special plants such as bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and wild liquorice. In summer you smell wafts of evening primrose and hear the repetitive song of the chiffchaff.
5. Continue along this path, enjoying sweeping views of the open countryside. Look out for alder, with their distinctive cones; and mature hawthorns, with their red berries in autumn and white blossom in May. In summer you hear the loud chirring of grasshoppers. Growing around the path is wood sage, which smells pungent if you crush the leaves. Before the path drops down, enjoy gorgeous views over the lush trees of the quarry – in autumn, the colours are spectacular.
6.The path loops around a second fenced area: in summer, see if you can spot the bubblegum-pink flowers of common centaury in the open area to the right of the path. Pass the circular benches on the right and take the mesh path leading left.
7. Just before the next benches ahead on the right, turn left and left again – from here on in, you are starting to retrace your steps. Plenty of dead wood is left to rot on the reserve as habitat
for invertebrates – see if you can spot the striking ruby-tailed wasp as you walk. Very soon is another junction of paths. You should take the left-hand route, which returns you down the long straight path, the way you came in. Turn right out of the footpath onto Pant Lane to return to the car park.
Although your guided walk finishes here, you are also free to explore the paths of Maes y Pant. The highlight is the viewing area: to reach this, turn right past the Maes y Pant welcome sign and carry on along the track until you reach a set of steep steps on the right. Climb the steps for panoramic views over the trees and distant hills – on a clear day you can even see Liverpool, 25 miles away. As you retrace your steps to the car park, look out for green and great spotted woodpeckers. n

Supporting Men in Conwy
As we approach Men’s Health Week, which runs from 10th-16th June 2024, it’s crucial to highlight the often overlooked aspects of men’s health, including mental wellbeing. This week serves as a poignant reminder of the unique challenges men face. One of the stark realities is the concerning statistics around male suicide rates. According to data from Gov.UK a staggering 73.9% of deaths by suicide (4,931 recorded deaths) between November 2022 and January 2024 were males.
This month I spoke to Steve at MATES Support Group, based in Conwy, to find out how they can help locally.
How did MATES start?
MATES Support Group was founded in April 2022 by myself, Gaz and Adam. Working as an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner for 20 years locally, I noticed a rise in mental health presentations and that men struggle to come forward to seek help. So I spoke to two friends; Gaz (owner of L’s Coffee Shop in Conwy who is well known for his work in the community) and Adam (co-owner of CXF Wellbeing in Rhos-on-Sea) and the rest is history!
MATES was born to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where men can come together and share ideas, models, concepts and stories which may benefit those involved. We share topics we have previously used in our careers, topics of interest, stories or sometimes open the floor for our men to share their experiences.
Where and when do you meet?
MATES meet monthly on a Tuesday evening at 7pm (dates announced via social media). We are very lucky that the amazing L’s Coffee and Bookshop in Conwy has always supported us and provided us with a home where we can meet. This offers an informal approach, think of it as having a coffee with friends.
What can I expect if I come along?
We provide drinks on arrival and get straight into the session. We start with an ice-breaker to encourage engagement then move onto a topic which usually provokes discussion or reflection. Often the men who come do the helping, we merely facilitate. There is no expectation to talk, share or get involved,
if someone only wants to listen then that’s ok too. We have had men from all backgrounds and ages; from police officers, nurses, labourers, teachers to mechanics, the list is endless. The common goal being that they want a couple of hours away from normal life to learn and help each other.
Do you do anything else?
We have recently experimented with ‘more MATES’ involving a cold-water sea dip and a walk up Aber Falls, which we are looking to expand on. We are also looking at ‘MATES on the move’, where we visit other areas on request to deliver a session.
How can the community support you?
What’s evident is that the local community has really got behind us and we are always so thankful for the sign posting, comments, messages, shares on social media and donations of support. Keep an eye on social media (MATES Support Group) for event dates or message support@matessupportgroup.co.uk if you need to talk to us. n

Preheat the oven to 200c. Dry off the cod fillets and dust them in the flour and cracked black pepper. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and cook the fish fillets skin side down for 3 minutes on each side. Transfer them to a baking tray and cook in the oven for a further 5-7 minutes.
Meanwhile melt the butter in the pan with the garlic and shallots and cook for 4 minutes, add the mushrooms and cook through on a high heat for 5 minutes. Just before they are ready add the brandy and reduce, throw in the spinach count to 20 and turn the pan heat off, the spinach will wilt down with the residual heat in the pan. Season with plenty of salt and black pepper.
To make the Béarnaise sauce, you will need…
200g unsalted butter
2 finely chopped shallots
Pinch of black pepper
1 clove crushed garlic
2 egg yolks
50 ml white wine vinegar
2 tbsp chopped tarragon
Melt the butter in a saucepan and leave to one side to allow the clarified butter and solids to separate (you’ll only use the clear butter on top). Place the shallots, pepper, garlic and vinegar in a pan and reduce the liquid by half. Leave to cool then place this mix along with the egg yolks and 30 ml of cold water in a mixer.
Give it a quick whizz and then turn it to its lowest setting. Slowly pour in the clarified butter and watch the sauce emulsify. Once it has thickened, you can remove it from the blender, season it and stir through the tarragon.
