DEAR READER Oh you’ve got to love the month of May with not one, but two bank holiday weekends! The problem is that Easter has spoilt us – I’ve never done an Easter egg hunt in a t-shirt before. The Big Picture Llandudno is known as the Queen of Welsh Resorts, and there is no better time to visit than during the first bank holiday in May when the town hosts the popular Victorian Extravaganza. Taking place between the 4th and 6th of May the extravaganza takes you back to the towns heyday, when it was booming as a holiday resort for well heeled Victorians. Visits to the seaside became extremely popular in the Victorian era, particularly among those living in the city, and Llandudno was situated in a remarkably beautiful area that offered everything Victorian tourists wanted from their holidays. And, while the town certainly hasn’t lost its touch when it comes to appealing to holidaymakers, it is nice to go back in time and become a more traditional tourist… © shutterstock

“We were at a shisha bar and a table behind us was discussing Punjabi music artists,” says Nesdi, also known as Nêst Aneirin. “This guy mentioned big names, then he mentioned me – saying how nice I was, how we’ve had drinks together, how I’m a hard worker – but when I caught a glimpse of him I had no idea who he was. He was just trying to impress a couple of girls!” It was a volunteering programme in India that would spark Nêst’s passion for Hindi and Punjabi music. On her return to Criccieth, she began uploading videos of herself singing popular Bollywood and Bhangra songs to YouTube – which caught the attention of rapperproducer Yo Yo Honey Singh, also known as the ‘Eminem of India’. Yo Yo invited Nesdi to co-write a song, and within 24 hours of its release London had reached number one in the global Punjabi charts. To date, the video has garnered over 16 million views. But the madness was only just beginning. Nesdi, also known to fans as Desi Gori, meaning Indian white girl, was named Best Newcomer at the British Bhangra Awards 2014, a title awarded by public vote. A succession of hits followed, including Tere Naal, the video for which was filmed in Portmeirion. But even back on Indian soil, Nêst hadn’t anticipated the magnitude of her fame. “I had people pulling at my clothes. My friend asked me where my security was – I said I didn’t need security. Trying to leave the venue, we realised we couldn’t get out.” A crowd of 125,000 came to watch her performance at the Birmingham mela [South Asian music festival]. “I was throwing up in a bin! It’s giving me shivers thinking about it.” But not everybody was been supportive, and she admits to feeling apprehensive when cultural appropriation became a hot topic. She recalls one incident when fingers were pointed by a white woman. It was the Asian community who would rush to her defence. “They would say: ‘Do you know her? She doesn’t claim it as her culture; she’s lived in India for six years, she has embraced and shared our culture.’” Still today, mention India and many of us think Slumdog Millionaire, but Nesdi’s music is a celebration of all she loves about India. But this life was threatening to overwhelm Nêst. “I couldn’t keep up with the persona,” she says. Returning to North Wales for a sabbatical from the music industry, she took a job as deputy manager of a restaurant – where she’s only managed to remain somewhat anonymous. “They’ve started sniffing around,” she laughs. “They ask Punjab2000

my boss: ‘Is it true Nesdi Jones is here?’ and take photos with me, but then end up eating in the restaurant next door so my boss goes mad!” Alongside becoming a mother, being back in the UK has given Nêst time to focus on her mental health. With the topic still a taboo in India, fans were shocked when she candidly opened up about the sexual assault she suffered as a child. But, the response has been positive.

Page 24 NWM 2019

YO YO INVITED NESDI TO COWRITE A SONG, AND WITHIN 24 HOURS OF ITS RELEASE LONDON HAD REACHED NUMBER ONE IN THE GLOBAL PUNJABI CHARTS. TO DATE, THE VIDEO HAS GARNERED OVER 16 MILLION VIEWS.

Village venture

Janet Hill visits Anglesey’s village store – which has been serving the community for the past ten years…

One of the pleasures I take in visiting smaller towns and villages in North Wales derives from the variety I see on the high street. Unlike cities and towns where small businesses have been beaten by the lowest common denominators of ‘cheap’ and ‘easy’, local creative businesses create colour and diversity. They’re owned by real people who know their customers personally – their likes, dislikes and values – and are in a position to offer individualised service and advice. With well known large department stores closing and more than one in eight shops boarded up nationally, we would be forgiven for agreeing with the headlines back in 2014 that ‘the death of the high street is upon us’ – but there are signs all around us that it’s not just doom and gloom. Today we are celebrating a true local success story – the wonderful Menter y Pentre Cemaes Village Venture and

As the name so clearly suggests, our pub was obviously a mill long before we took over and turned it into what it is today. TOWN IN FOCUS

Steve Goodier visits Llangollen, and finds a charming town full of heritage… I recently read a book by Steve Haywood called ‘Narrow Boat Nomads’ which was about a retired couple who went to live on their narrow boat exploring the UK’s canal network. After an idyllic summer winter approached and they wanted somewhere to moor up for the dark days and so headed for Llangollen as it held memories for them and they liked it a lot. I know what they meant! Llangollen and I go back many years and in my mind I always associate it with bright sunny days when the River Dee

The Llangollen Canal has many historic ties and eleven miles of the current waterway from Gledrid to the Horseshoe Falls (which is a superb weir) via the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is classed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canal was originally built as a feeder canal that ran from Trevor and was to be used to tap the waters from the River Dee at Llantysilio (near the aforementioned Horseshoe Falls). It provided a link to the Ellesmere Canal which was built to connect the coal mines and iron works at Ruabon and this is where the popular tourist attraction of ‘The Llangollen

OF THE

Month

There is a lot of mystery

surrounding the Long Island Iced Tea – which basically means nobody really knows who actually invented it… Robert “Rosebud” Butt claims to have invented the cocktail as an entry in a competition to create a new drink containing Triple Sec in 1972 while he worked at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, New York. However, the city of Kingsport in Tennessee claims that the iconic cocktail actually originates there. According to legend, Charlie ‘Old Man’ Bishop, an illegal alcohol distiller at the time, was the first to mix it on Long Island in the Holston River during the 1920’s. But wherever, and whenever, it originated one thing is for sure – the Long Island Iced Tea is the perfect drink to put a spring in your step this May…

Long Island Iced Tea Equipment: 12oz Gibraltar Glass, Boston Shaker, Hawthorne Strainer Ingredients: 12.5ml of the following five spirits - Gin, Vodka, Tequila, White Rum and Triple Sec. 25 ml lemon and lime puree, dash of sugar syrup, dash of Angostura Bitters and Coke Method: Pour all of the main ingredients in the shaker with ice and shake. Fill the Gibraltar glass with ice, strain mixture over ice and add the Coke until you get the requisite colour, and bitters if desired To serve: Garnish with a generous wedge of lemon or lime

IN THE MIX

Of course, if you’d rather sit back and relax while somebody mixed your ideal cocktail for you, then why not visit Sheldon’s in Colwyn Bay? From a Margarita to a Mojito, it has quite the cocktail selection and is quickly becoming the place to go for cocktails in North Wales. 01492 339821 www.sheldonsbar.co.uk

Food for thought

As a rule I don’t usually get envious, or at least if I do, I try not to make it too obvious. However, I recently caught a documentary about the history of model railways of the likes of Bassett-Lowke and Hornby. Music producer Pete Waterman was on there in his station master’s cap, showing off his vast, room filling, railway set filled with hundreds of perfect little details and little touches. I must confess that I hadn’t felt the green-eyed monster so acutely since I went to visit a school friend and discovered that he had a Scalextric set built with in an exact replica of Brands Hatch in his attic – even down to the seated audience that cheered when the cars went past the finishing line, damn him! Turns out that model railways are something of a cultish secret obsession for plenty of people including – brilliantly – Rod Stewart and Roger Daltrey. I’m not sure that anything can reduce a fully grown adult to the state of a prepubescent schoolboy quite as instantly as the sight of a beautifully curated working train set. The only thing that might top it is the sight of an actual steam train in all its vintage glory, and this summer in North Wales, it will not be an especially rare sight to see one chugging along through our beautiful countryside.

Fundraiser is appointed as High Sheriff of Clwyd A dedicated charity fundraiser has been officially appointed as the new High Sheriff of Clwyd and pledged to be an ambassador for good causes. Stephanie Catherall took over the independent, non-political Royal role during a ceremony at St Deiniol’s Church in Hawarden. The event was attended by a host of local dignitaries including LordLieutenant of Clwyd, Henry Fetherstonhaugh, Lord Barry Jones and his wife Lady Janet, North Wales Police Chief Constable Carl Foulkes, Judge Rhys Rowland, the Bishop of St Asaph, Right Reverend Gregory Cameron and the outgoing High Sheriff of Clwyd, Lady Elizabeth Hanmer. The origins of the office date back to Saxon times when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the maintenance of law and order within the shire, or county, and for the collection and return of taxes due to the Crown. Mrs Catherall, who lives in Nercwys, is now one of 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales.

County Borough Council, the popular resort town has been a regular feature in recent years by hosting official Ceremonial Starts and Finishes. Moreover, its seaside streets made history last October when, for the very first time on the British mainland, fans witnessed the spectacle of World Championship motor sport action on closed public roads. New for 2019, all the teams and manufacturers contesting Britain’s high-profile round of the FIA World Rally Championship will be based in Llandudno for the very first time, alongside the international event’s busy headquarters based at Venue Cymru. “We’re thrilled to once again be Host County for this prestigious event, but this year is extra special with having the World Championship based in Llandudno,” said Councillor Louise Emery, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development. “We’ve worked with Wales Rally GB since 2009, and each year the number of spectators the rally’s attracted to Conwy County has increased, and to now have the manufacturers and teams based with us is very exciting. The Worldwide media coverage that comes with this event helps put Conwy County well and truly on the map, so we welcome the opportunity to work with the rally team again, especially with the new developments.” www.walesrallygb.com

Garlic, the vampire slayer

Enter the moist warmth of an ancient woodland in May and two colours will strike you: the cobalt of Bluebells, which reach their peak early in the month, and the white of Wild Garlic. Also known as Ramsons, each garlic flower has six narrow white petals, arranged in a star-formation, but it’ll be the pungent herby smell that is as evident. By May, the leaves are too mature for foraging; the flowers can add punch to a salad or sandwich, but do leave plenty for the insects, as pollinators love them.

May is the month that your garden pond brims with life. Jelly-wrapped Toad eggs, laid in strings wrapped around vegetation, hatch into tadpoles, a few weeks after Frogs have hatched. Meanwhile, Large Red Damselflies emerge from the water, the eggs having been laid two summers ago by a mother that it will never meet. With a scarlet body and black legs, all of this year’s hatch of Large Reds take to the wing over just a few short weeks in April and May.

Last year, Ospreys nested on platforms at the lake edge for the first time ever, and the pair has returned this year – one of only four nests in Wales.

Julian Hughes grew up in North Wales, which instilled a lifelong love of nature. He lives near Llandudno, manages the RSPB’s public affairs work in Wales, and writes about the region’s wildlife.

I have been fortunate enough to swim with wild dolphins several times, both in the UK and abroad, and it is a truly magical experience. For anyone seeking an encounter in the wild my advice is to leave your boat behind and swim, paddleboard or kayak. Dolphins are intelligent, social and communicative animals and will interact with humans through choice so the only way to swim with them ethically is to let them be in charge. Pursuing them will get you

When a food source becomes locally abundant a pod of dolphins may be fairly reliably seen for several days, often from the land, and there are pods in some locations which remain resident to an area for much of the year, such as the Bottlenose dolphins here in North Wales around Cardigan Bay. In various parts of the world there are locations where wild dolphins regularly and predictably approach humans for interaction in shallow coastal areas.

vintage...

Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Newark That right, it’s that time of year again to stock up on Antiques. A surge in online sales has left TDHQ looking like Liberty’s after the Boxing Day sale! Which is music to the ears of Tatty’s bank manager at Coutts (kidding), but also poses somewhat of an issue when trying to replenish the showroom with select and interesting pieces. Tatty won’t buy just anything for the sake of buying; everything we sell has to reflect our brand. If I wouldn’t have it in my house, it certainly wouldn’t make it into our showroom, and these key items to “our look” are REALLY hard to find. A stomping ground which has proved fruitful in the past is Newark International Antiques Fair. So.... off we trekked with an empty van and plenty of spends. The fair is held on a vast showground and you have to pay a premium on the gate to be in the mix extra early. That’s right!! You have to pay a hefty price for the privilege of getting out of bed at 5am, looking an absolute shocking fright and to near freeze yourself to death in the process. That being said, it is the most exhilarating of experiences. The adrenaline of being on the hunt and the anticipation of what lies ahead, soon gets your blood pumping. Being in super early when the stall holders are setting up is a must, because they begin to trade amongst themselves the minute they start to unload.

He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
