Situated just two miles from Betws y Coed, the narrow ravine named Ffos Anoddun (The Fairy Glen) is steeped in folklore. This thickly wooded sheer gorge, which boasts fantastic rock formations and dramatic cascades of water, has been the subject of many poems telling of faeries and sprites – and there is no better time of year to hunt them out than during November. As the leaves turn golden Ffos Anoddun comes into its own, making it a fabulous time to embark on the short circular walk that surrounds this magical place that’s home to the Afon Conwy…

Away from the mountains in Wrexham we find not a steeple as mentioned in the poem, rather the tower of St Giles’ Parish Church (Eglwys San Silyn) standing proud at 136ft. Gale force winds destroyed the steeple of an earlier church here in 1330, and a later fire damaged other parts of the sacred building. The church still standing today was completed in the early 16th century. The most ancient and famous of the seven wonders is the mountain that everyone has surely heard of. Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) holds the rank of highest mountain in Wales at 3,560ft and is ever popular with visitors. Across the border in Denbighshire the lovely little town of Llangollen is where the sixth wonder spans the River Dee. The bridge that stands there now was built sometime in the 16th or 17th centuries, replacing an earlier structure. With its four pointed arches and a gap through which a steam railway heritage line passes at the edge of the river, this old bridge carries pedestrians and vehicles. Boosting a rare habitat on a
Flintshire mountain A rare habitat found on a mountain in Flintshire that exists only due to the local area’s rich mining history is to be boosted in a new round of conservation work.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has started work to scrape surface vegetation that will help to expose the underlying soil with the aim of re-establishing the rare Calaminarian habitat – heavy metal tolerant grassland.
This habitat is specifically associated with old mine spoil in areas formerly used for the mining of heavy metals such as lead and zinc, and supports rare plant species such as spring sandwort (Sabulina verna) as well as heavy metal tolerant mosses and lichens. Contractors will scrape the surface vegetation to expose crucial bare ground habitat and increase the likelihood of natural reseeding from nearby Calaminarian habitat. There will be six scrape areas in total; with five scraping the surfaces whilst one area will see a technique that inverts the surface on itself in the hope of bringing the mineral layers to the top. Annual monitoring will then be required to keep an eye on which species reappear within the scraped areas. This will see NRW officers work closely with Halkyn Mountain Nature Conservation Group who operate locally and will help with monitoring on a frequent basis. In addition, this will be seen as a pilot project with the results helping to inform any future management of this rare habitat across Wales. Halkyn Common & Holywell Grasslands Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Halkyn Mountain Special Area of Conservation (SAC) supports the largest areas of heavy metal tolerant grassland in Wales – equating to 79% of the total amount of this type of Calaminarian grassland found in Wales. “The work on Halkyn Mountain is very important as it stands to boost a large proportion of some of the only Calaminarian habitat found here in Wales,” said Elizabeth Felton, NRW Environment Team Leader. “We hope our intervention is a timely one given this rare habitat on Halkyn Mountain is currently under threat from numerous forces, including under grazing that results in overgrown vegetation, and human-led activities such as illegal dirt biking. “Due to the nature of scraping work, the ground might look damaged initially, and this could alarm some people. However, it’s worth emphasising that the true effect will take at least a year to come to fruition as we await to see which species recolonise the scraped areas.” n

Fall Foliage
Bethany Birch discovers the top places to see spendid autumn scenery this November… North Wales is beautiful at any time of the year, from the hazy days of summer through to the subdued days of winter. However, autumn truly is something special. Bathed in dense forestry, North Wales transforms the local landscape into a rich tapestry of colour. Hues of greens get replaced with golden ambers and juicy reds. Bustling beaches quieten, lakes, rivers and waterfalls benefit from a spell of serenity and the drama of an increase in rainfall. When the weather permits, autumn is unbeatable. While beauty lies all around us, why not consider heading to these picture perfect locations this month to take in the last of the autumn splendour?
Beddgelert, Snowdonia National Park
Home to the resting place of the loyal dog, Gelert, in the famous Welsh legend, Bedgelert offers both beauty and tales aplenty. Hunker down in one of the quaint cafés, or cosy eateries to take the views in while enjoying some respite from the crisp air. Or venture on a refreshing walk in the stunning Snowdonia National Park. The ancient stone bridges that cross the Afon Glaslyn offers the perfect vantage points to take in the surrounding views. Some of the top

Rhaeadr Ewynnol (Swallow Falls) Betws-y-Coed
This area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a real delight to take in, with the beech, conifer and birch trees providing a striking backdrop to the falls. Located on the River Llugwy, these falls consist of a series of smaller and larger cascades with the most prominent being the final waterfall. This main and most famous waterfall drops approximately 70 feet (21 meters) and is, impressively, the highest continuous waterfall in Wales. The water cascades dramatically down a series of rocky steps, creating a mesmerising view. Located in the Gwydir Forest, the falls are framed by lush greenery and ancient woodlands, enhancing the picturesque setting, especially from September to November. The falls are easily accessible from Betws-y-Coed, with nearby parking available. Viewing the falls requires little effort with a short walk on a well-maintained path to a selection of viewing points making it fairly accessible to most.
Take a Drive through Snowdonia
If the weather’s miserable, or you simply fancy admiring the views from the comfort of someplace warm, then buckle up and fire up the engine. North Wales is home to a plethora of scenic driving routes, especially through the autumn months when Mother Nature treats us to a rich show of colour. Whether you choose to meander country roads or opt for the main highway running through the park, you’re guaranteed a stunning view. Covering 823 square miles, the Snowdonia National Park holds the title of the largest national park in Wales. From imposing mountains to glassy lakes, dense forests to open moorland this vast area boasts a variety of scenic terrain. The choice of music is up to you!

Word on the street Creating the building blocks of beautiful artwork…
Turning buildings into words is the latest vision of Julie & Mick Bourner, who travel the length and breadth of the country to capture the signage on hotels, pubs, shops and iconic buildings. As a result they have generated a vast image bank of letters in a variety of typographic styles, ranging from vintage and weathered to sleek and contemporary. These letters are original photographs and are not digitally created – they are simply real photos of real letters that have been found on real buildings – and they serve as the building blocks for crafting meaningful artwork, bringing the beauty of the written word into your everyday life. Julie & Mick have named this fusion of typography and urban aesthetics Fonted – a unique product that combines their captivating photography with the art of letter forms to bring you a truly personalised and visually striking piece of artwork. Since every letter carries it’s own story, imbued with the history and character of the buildings they were sourced from, they make the perfect backdrop for personalised letter art. Each letter photographed is carefully selected for its distinct style, character and visual appeal, ensuring that your creations are nothing short of extraordinary. And what makes the North Wales town name pictures even more special is the fact that they are made up of fonts actually taken from buildings in North Wales! In addition to their range of local town names, Julie & Mick also offer a bespoke service, which is a great idea for personal and unique gifts – ideal for weddings, births and anniversaries. So why not unleash your creativity by selecting the font that resonates with you the most from their extensive bank of letters – and create a personal piece of artwork that really stands out from the crowd? Let’s Do Dinner
If you don’t fancy hosting your own dinner party this month then fear not, as you can still support Tŷ Gobaith by attending Bryn Williams’ charity evening…
Celebrity chef Bryn Williams is hosting a charity dinner at his Porth Eirias restaurant. On Saturday 18th November, the Denbigh-born chef is teaming up with Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospices to offer 60 diners a delicious three-course meal plus welcome drink and canapés at the waterfront venue in Colwyn Bay. The evening will also include an auction, raffle and games. Proud Welshman, Bryn is hosting the ‘Let’s Do Dinner’ event in support of the local charity and crucially, every penny raised on the night will be doubled by a match-funding pot under their Final Moments Matter campaign which runs in November. “We’re looking forward to welcoming guests in our usual style to enjoy some great food and help raise money to support seriously ill local children and their families,” he said. “I’ve designed the menu to reflect the best of local produce with some firm favourites, and of course, our signature Porth Eirias Baked Alaska. Supporting Tŷ Gobaith is something all the staff here are very proud to do. So please, come and join us on November 18th for a wonderful evening.” Tŷ Gobaith fundraiser Vanessa Marubbi, said: “We are delighted to be bringing ‘Let’s Do Dinner’ to Porth Eirias, we can’t thank Bryn enough for his support. If you are looking for fine dining with a dash of feel good make sure you book early, you’re in for a fabulous evening raising funds. If you can’t make November 18th, why not host your own dinner party and sign up for your free fundraising pack at on our website.” n
Tickets are £75 per person and tables of four or more can be booked via reservations@portheirias.com or call (01492) 533700. Alternatively, individual tickets can be purchased and you will be placed at a table with fellow diners. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce

INSIDE/OUT Artistry underfoot
In the world of interior design, it’s often the seemingly small details that have the most significant impact. A carefully chosen rug can transform a room, lending warmth, texture, and personality to the space. FrithRugs understand the profound influence of these artful underfoot companions. Their dedication to craftsmanship, quality, and style has made them a true aficionado’s choice when it comes to rugs. From classic to contemporary, their collection offers a kaleidoscope of choices to suit every taste and theme. They believe that a rug should be more than just a floor covering; it should be a work of art that tells a story, whether through intricate patterns, lush materials, or vibrant colours. Their commitment to excellence extends to every facet of our rugs, from the materials they source to the artisans who craft them.

Designs through the decades
Brown’s are celebrating 60 years in business, meaning that they have seen fashion trends come and go, then come back around again! Grey colour schemes seem to be fizzling out with beautiful greens and neutrals making a huge comeback. Back when they opened in 1963, Brown’s showroom looked very different, however some of the styles are still very current. Boucle sofas, bold prints and strong wood facings are still extremely popular. Skipping forward to the 90s, and trends such as sofa skirts and chintz patterns on the walls, rugs, sofas and curtains were all the rage! Keeping on top of these trends is what has kept Brown’s in business, and they really appreciate the support that they have been given by their loyal customers over the decades – while looking forward to what the future could bring. brownsfurniture.co

Small class sizes, often comprising fewer than a dozen pupils, allow our teachers to closely monitor the progress of each individual throughout their two years of A-Level study. EDUCATION NEWS Law students to benefit from expert guidance as part of mentor scheme
More than 20 legal professionals from across the region have signed up to a mentorship scheme to provide crucial guidance to Law students at Wrexham University. Students on the Law degree, who sign up to the newly-launched scheme, will have access to expert guidance around the area of legal practice that they are planning to specialise in, as they will be matched up with a qualified lawyer that works in the area of legal practice. Polly Hernández, Lecturer in Law at Wrexham University, said: “We’re delighted that so many legal experts from our region have come forward to lend their support to our students, as they understand how difficult it can be for students and newly-qualified professionals to get their foot in the door within the profession. For our students, it will also be a fantastic way of building up their contacts – as well as some potential opportunities to put their theory into practice, as their mentors may be able to connect them with some placements or volunteering opportunities.”
Rydal Penrhos School Skiiers Crowned National Champions Rydal Penrhos, an independent coeducational day school in Colwyn Bay, has a reason to celebrate following remarkable success at the Welsh Schools Skiing Championships held in Llangrannog. Rydal Penrhos skiiers not only achieved impressive individual accomplishments but also emerged victorious over some of the finest schools from across the country, earning the coveted title of Welsh Schools U12 Ski Champions. Members of the Rydal Penrhos ski team practice twice a week on the dry slope at Llandudno Snowsports Centre, which prepares them for both competitive events and international ski trips to Europe and the USA.

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) Beware of spending beyond your means on the 3rd. Instead of engaging in retail therapy, focus on developing a prosperity consciousness. Rededicate yourself to a creative project on the 4th; it is a great outlet for your frustrations. On the 6th, you’ll get a plum assignment as thanks for your dedication and diligence at work. On the 8th, you attract admirers like a flame draws moths. Set your romantic intentions. When a course that you’ve always wanted to take opens, sign up immediately since spaces will fill quickly.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) Turning fantasy into reality requires practical steps on the 3rd. Saving money, adopting healthy habits, and making helpful connections are all part of the process. A reference or recommendation helps you secure a fantastic living situation on the 6th. Your natural charm, wit, and intelligence bubble to the surface on the 8th, making people putty in your hands. The New Moon on the 13th brings a moneymaking offer that’s too good to be true. Hold out for a job with an established company that doesn’t force you to do all the heavy lifting.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) Low expectations of love bring you down on the 3rd. Boost your self-esteem by giving yourself the care, appreciation, and generosity you truly deserve. Beware of making impulsive decisions on the 4th or you could seriously inconvenience someone you adore. Your allure is more powerful than ever on the 6th, causing people to turn heads wherever you go. On the 8th, revise your daily schedule to include the people and activities you love most. The New Moon on the 13th warns against losing your head in love.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) Set some healthy boundaries with your best friend or romantic partner on the 3rd; it will make your relationship healthier. A confident attitude helps you realise a lifelong dream on the 6th; remember you can be, do, and have anything you want. Treat a passionate argument on the 11th as an indication you deserve the best. On the 13th, the New Moon tempts you to adopt a radically different look. Rather than altering your image, build a better self-concept that makes you magnetic to abundance.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) You’ll be handed some important professional responsibilities on the 4th. Have faith that you will dispatch these duties easily and efficiently. A business meeting on the 7th will go extremely well; this is also a good time to go to a job interview or audition. A flirtatious conversation on the 10th makes you feel alluring, witty, and intelligent. This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. On the 13th, the New Moon prompts you to take better care of your health.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) Overindulging in food and drink on the 3rd will slow you down. Treat your body like a temple on this pivotal day. Assuming more domestic responsibilities on the 4th will make you feel productive and appreciated. Your bold ideas will boost your reputation as a brilliant innovator on the 10th. The New Moon on the 13th causes you to withdraw from a stressful social world. Start looking for friends and colleagues who share your optimistic view of the world. They’ll support a dream you’ve been quietly developing over the past few months.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) Let your best friend, romantic partner, or a business associate take work off your plate on the 6th. Use your free time to do something nice for yourself; this will cause your luck to multiply and grow. Starting on the 8th, devote more time to pleasant domestic pursuits. Cooking, gardening, and decorating will give you an attractive glow that’s hard to resist. The New Moon on the 13th causes you to demand the care and attention you deserve.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) Starting on the 4th, it will be much easier to get through your to-do list, especially if you adopt a slow and steady pace with your chores. Your powerful charisma paves the way for a travel opportunity on the 6th; book a trip to a place that’s famous for its natural beauty. Looking for the part of a polished professional on the 8th will attract some exciting career opportunities. Pick the offer that appeals to your sense of luxury and beauty. On the 13th, the New Moon prompts a friend to behave erratically.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) A persuasive authority figure will try to lure you away from a period of rest on the 3rd; refuse to take the bait. Do everything in your power to deliver a professional promise on the 11th, even if it costs you money. Going the extra mile will protect your reputation and attract even more business. Let the power of the New Moon direct you to a space or roommate who lifts your spirits. Making a professional presentation, going to an audition, or attending a job interview will help you realise a cherished career goal on the 18th.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) Achieving a healthy work-life balance will be challenging on the 3rd. It’s better to err on the side of a happy domestic life right now, even if it means turning down work. Spending more time on the relationships and activities you love will cultivate greater emotional stability on the 4th; try it. Don’t let a pushy authority figure talk you into assuming a distasteful role on the 10th. Although you like the idea of having more autonomy, you should wait for a job that is more in line with the type of work you enjoy.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) Be compassionate toward a confused business or romantic partner on the 3rd. Assume they’ll take the path that is best for you both. A committed relationship takes work from your shoulders on the 4th. Your romantic allure is at an all-time high on the 6th; use it to lure someone into your web of intrigue. On the 13th, the New Moon gives you a variety of options that make you indecisive. Instead of rushing into the first opportunity that arrives, wait for the ideal way to expand your horizons.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) Don’t expect your best friend, romantic partner, or business associate to read your mind on the 3rd. If you need more time to make an important decision, just ask. Assuming more responsibility on the 4th will cause your professional reputation to shine. A blunt suggestion from a colleague is worth following on the 10th. Beware of making travel reservations on the 13th, as the disruptive New Moon could throw obstacles in your way. If you need to book a trip, make sure to get travel insurance. You can manifest a lifelong dream on the 17th.
