HAND CRAFTED IN WALES

DEAR READER

So August is here and, at the time of going to press anyway, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of a heat wave on the way…

But fear not, because we are British and so make the best of it we shall! If you were planning on going camping but don’t fancy it in the rain, perhaps a caravan holiday could be a better fit for you this year. You still get to feel at one with nature, but you do have a few more home comforts at your disposal – it is always better to be able to boil the kettle without getting rained on for example!

We have got some brilliant ideas for North Walian caravan holidays starting on page 29… So have a read and prepare to be inspired – who knows this could be the beginning of a new obsession!

Another thing that we are currently obsessed with at North Wales Mag HQ is

the fabulous food and drink scene that is right on our doorstep. Turn to page 49 to see what I mean – we have ice cream from a historic shop, recipes designed to keep the kids entertained this summer, wine from the experts and cocktails from the hippest bar & bistro in the region.

Wherever you decide to have that summer tipple (in rain or shine) I wish you all the best this August.

We want to hear from you!

BIG the picture

Situated on the edge of The Snowdonia National Park, to the south of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), Lake Vyrnwy is set amidst the remote and beautiful Berwyn Mountains. With spectacular waterfalls and unspoilt open countryside, a visit to Lake Vyrnwy is a wonderful day out for all the family. Technically a reservoir, Lake Vyrnwy was built in the 1880s for Liverpool Corporation Waterworks to supply the city with fresh water. It flooded the head of the Vyrnwy valley and submerged the village of Llanwddyn. 311 brooks, waterfalls and rivers flow into the lake and are named after the mountains or hillsides they flow from. Today the estate that surrounds the lake is a popular destination for ornithologists, cyclists and hikers.

A Journey to the Island of Saints

Dene Bebbington explores the Pilgrim’s Way, and discovers a trail rich in history…

On the sacred Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) off the Llŷn Peninsula a timeless pleasure is to watch the reddening sun set over the sea. After St Cadfan founded a monastery there in the 6th Century, at their peaceful sanctuary monks would have witnessed another day’s close while the sun still shone on distant unknown lands to the west. Now enticing people to its stunning location and opportunities for birdwatching, the little island attracted pilgrims in the Middle Ages and continues to have a spiritual draw.

In 2011 volunteers used rights of way to walk a route to Bardsey dubbed the North Wales Pilgrim’s Way. Connecting churches dedicated to various saints it traverses settlements and scenic landscapes for 134 miles. A journey of this length on foot needs to be tackled in stages from its starting point at Basingwerk Abbey, near Holywell, which was founded in the year 1131 – centuries after St Cadfan became a historical figure.

Holywell was itself a destination for pilgrims in need of the healing waters at St Winefride’s Well, with the abbey acting as a hospital for those who made it that far. Unlike today, past pilgrims got to experience Basingwerk and other abbeys in their proper condition before King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, leaving many in ruins.

When the Pilgrim’s Way reaches St Asaph after some 20 miles an intact cathedral is

Whether wearing walking boots for the long haul, or trainers to explore a section or two, the Way can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their beliefs. Of course, holy sites are also of historical interest being part of North Wales’ heritage, but in between the Christian buildings walkers may contemplate whatever matters to them while passing through both intimate and expansive landscapes.

On the uplands between Rowen and Abergwyngregyn a more ancient site nestles in a sheltered part of the hills surrounded by grazing sheep. The Druid’s Circle (Meini Hirion) is a stone circle dating back about 5,000 years – the English name is a misnomer since it actually pre-dates the druids! Situated just off a prehistoric trackway which people would have tramped long before the advent of Christianity, for the recreational walker it’s an ideal spot to take photos and imagine the tough lives of people who created it. The effort of reaching this point on the Way is paid off by a superb view across to Llandudno.

No more than a couple of walking days from Aberdaron, the route passes through Clynnog Fawr. Here you’ll find St Beuno’s Well (Ffynnon Beuno) where according to legend the decapitated head of St Winefride was somehow reattached to her body by her uncle, St Beuno.

Continuing to skirt the coast, the Way passes over the lovely Whistling Sands at Porthor, so-called because of the sand’s sound when walked over. By this point anyone who’s trekked the whole way from Holywell knows the end is in sight. A bittersweet thought, perhaps. But with any such endeavour the experience and demands on mental and physical stamina is at least as significant as making it to the end. The journey is the destination, and for those wanting a memento record a pilgrim passport can be stamped at certain buildings along the way.

The seaside village of Aberdaron is the last mainland waypoint before the final destination of Bardsey Island. At the National Trust Visitor Centre a completion certificate can be bought for a nominal fee even if going no further. Having survived whatever the Welsh weather has thrown at them, a truly weather dependent stage lies ahead.

From nearby Porth Meudwy a boat sails the short crossing of less than two miles when the sea isn’t too rough. Awaiting the determined traveller is a small green island bearing the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. A legend started by St Leuddad claims that those who died on the island wouldn’t go to hell. No wonder then that this piece of rock only 1.5 miles wide is thought to be the resting place of 20,000 saints. Still relatively disconnected from the modern world, without electricity or indoor toilets, Bardsey is a magical place for the scenery alone. Like Britain’s other holy islands such as Lindisfarne and Iona there’s a special feeling to be on these remote religious outposts.

The Pilgrim’s Way recently featured on a BBC television programme when celebrities took on the walk. As they too discovered, everyone benefits in their own way thanks to the break from normal life and time to think beyond daily concerns. n

Top meadows to visit in North Wales this summer

The Trust has been looking after meadows all over Wales to help them grow and bloom, and so far, has restored an area that’s about 50 times as big as Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. With over 40% of the UK’s remaining wildflower meadows occupying Wales, there’s no excuse to get out and about to explore the magnificent meadows on your doorstep this summer...

Bodnant Garden, Conwy

Bodnant’s 80-acre garden is home to three flourishing wildflower meadows - Old Park, Furnace Meadow, and Cae Poeth. Their growth, thanks to traditional grassland management, offers a colourful array of native wildflowers, including four orchid species.

Chirk Castle and Garden, Wrexham

Since 2019, a 16-acre hay meadow in the parkland at Chirk Castle has become a wildlife-rich haven to various wildflowers and insect species, including the rare Greater butterfly-orchid spotted in 2022. The site also features the Mindful Meadow, a serene spot for nature connection and wellbeing.

Erddig Hall and Garden, Wrexham

Explore Erddig’s 1200-acre estate or its 18th Century Grade I listed walled garden, filled with colourful meadows and wildflowers. Enjoy a walk along the garden’s ‘canals’ or boating lakes, or to the Plas Gronno restored meadow, teeming with diverse flora like yellow rattle and wild carrot.

National Trust Cymru are on a mission to bring the colourful landscapes of our meadows back to life stretching across Wales, from the valleys of Eryri (Snowdonia) to the coastal fields of Ceredigion.

Castle and Garden, Bangor

In the Neo-Norman castle grounds, enjoy exploring two new wildflower meadows filled with flowers throughout the summer months. Picnic amidst nature, listen to bees, admire the view of Eryri (Snowdonia), and watch swallows feeding on the insects which are supported by the flowers and grasses.

Plas Newydd House and Garden, Anglesey

Cae Maes y Frân, once a muddy rugby field, is now a Coronation Meadow, known for its abundant, species-rich wildlife. Its five acres are filled with native flora like wild orchids and meadow buttercups, supporting local bees, insects and birds.

Plas yn Rhiw, Llŷn Peninsula

Above Plas yn Rhiw’s manor house lies a thriving meadow and orchard with some of the best views in Wales. Enriched by the work of local school children, it is alive with the sounds of insects and birds like swallows and buzzards. Enjoy this natural spectacle from benches surrounded by nature. n

Cadwaladers

Delights with Tradition and Innovation

As Cadwaladers rolls out its new menu, it’s worth celebrating not just the fresh offerings, but also the rich heritage that has endeared it to generations of locals and visitors alike…

Cadwaladers, a beloved name in North Wales, is synonymous with delectable treats and heartwarming memories. The Cadwaladers Ice Cream story began in 1927. The Cadwalader family lived in Criccieth in Gwynedd, North Wales. There they made and sold their closely guarded secret recipe, vanilla ice cream, from the window of their Criccieth general store.

Cadwaladers Vanilla Ice Cream has a unique taste and it enticed customers from miles around. Childhood memories from Criccieth holidays continue to bring customers back year after year for a taste of those special memories. The list of ingredients in the original handwritten copy of Hannah Cadwalader’s secret recipe includes 6lbs of ‘’shan’t tell you’’ and ‘’a great deal of love and care’’.

The Company, including the secret recipe and the actual Criccieth store, originally changed hands in the 1980’s. Improvements in food safety laws (such as no more raw egg!) meant that a slight adaptation to the secret recipe was necessary.

To ensure that the unique flavour remains, the recipe is regularly and continuously taste-tested by loyal customers, including some who started enjoying Cadwaladers vanilla ice cream in the 1930s. Cadwaladers became a huge part of the culture on the Llŷn Peninsula and the reputation of the ice cream spread far and wide.

In addition to the original Criccieth store, Cadwaladers can now be found in Porthmadog and Betws Y Coed in North Wales, Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay, Porthcawl in South Wales, and at Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire. Cadwaladers is now owned by the Brierley family who, together with a team of more than one hundred, operate the six stores.

Cadwaladers Original Welsh Vanilla ice cream recipe is still used today and continues to command a growing loyalty from customers who appreciate the very best in ice cream.

The delicious secret Welsh Vanilla recipe has a wonderfully soft and rich flavour, is stocked in all the stores, is available in all of the cones and tubs, and it is used in the delicious cold drinks and indulgent sundaes.

Specially created for customers, Cadwaladers 28/3 Espresso blend was introduced in 2012 and has grown a following of devotees who appreciate the finer quality of hand crafted hot drinks.

The 28/3 Espresso is made from a blend of the finest Central American, Ethiopian and Indian beans which when roasted creates a dark and smooth espresso with a slightly sweet and fruity balanced flavour.

From its picturesque locations in Criccieth, Porthmadog and Betws-y-Coed, Cadwaladers continues to be a beacon of sweetness and tradition, offering not just ice cream, but a taste of Welsh heritage. n

A feast for the senses

The Mold Food & Drink Festival returns this September – and it’s the only place to go to see the very best in Welsh, local and international food and drink!

Where will the festival take place?

You’ll find the event close to the town centre in Mold, as the New Street car park is transformed into a culinary wonderland!

What are the opening times?

On Friday 13th the gates will open at 6pm (till 10pm) for the Tribute Night. This year it’s QUEEN! Then the festival itself begins at 10am on Saturday 14th September and runs through until 5pm on Sunday 15th.

So, what should you expect to find here?

The festival has over 90 exhibitors this year, selling a huge range of delicious food; from preserves to pancakes, from ribs to relishes, from cheese to churros! The bars will ensure you are well looked after throughout the event, and speciality liquors are also in plentiful supply. There will also be a few non-food exhibitors keen to showcase their products, including crafts, ceramics and soaps.

Will there be chef demonstrations?

Of course! It wouldn’t be a food festival without showcase chefs. Graham Tinsley MBE, Executive Director of Carden Park Hotel and Spa and Director of the Welsh National Culinary Team, will be the resident chef on Saturday in the cookery theatre. As always, he and his team will be creating culinary masterpieces to set your tastebuds tingling! On the Sunday there will be an ensemble of local pubs ‘popping up’ to create and share some of their flagship dishes with you.

Is there anything for children to do?

The Mold Food & Drink Festival always thinks of its younger visitors, and this year is no exception! Along with a small number of family favourite free fairground rides, there will also be a full programme of activities brought to you in conjunction with Mold’s very own Theatr Clwyd, where they will be able to dress up in authentic theatrical costumes in a photobooth.

You mentioned music? Who’s on stage?

19 local acts will be introduced during the weekend, most of whom are brand new to the festival this year! The talent is incredible, and you will be able to enjoy a whole range of music from choirs, soloists and bands, entertaining you with originals and covers, from country to rock, from choral to big band tunes.

Cocktail of the month

The Mai Tai

The Mai Tai’s origin is a subject of debate, two famed tiki bar owners hold claims to its origin, Trader Vic and Donn Beach.

Trader Vic claims to have created the Mai Tai in 1944 at his restaurant in Oakland, California. According to Vic, he made the drink for some friends visiting from Tahiti, one of whom exclaimed, “Maita’i roa ae!” (meaning “very good” or “out of this world!”), giving the cocktail its name.

On the other hand Donn Beach claimed he invented a similar drink in the 1930s, which he called the Mai Tai Swizzle. His version was more complex, involving a variety of ingredients and syrups. Out of the two, Trader Vic’s Mai Tai recipe has been dubbed the classic.

The classic recipe includes Jamaican rum, lime juice, orgeat syrup, orange curaçao and simple syrup. The cocktail is typically garnished with mint and a lime shell.

The Mai Tai became a symbol of the tiki culture and gained immense popularity in mid-20th Century America. It represented an exotic escape and was somewhat of a kickstart to broader tiki movement that captivated modern cocktail culture.

The Mai Tai’s popularity helped to establish the tiki bar scene and influenced the development of many other tropical cocktails. It remains a staple in tiki bars worldwide and is celebrated for its balance of sweet, sour and strong flavours.

Celebr ate Mai Tai day on August 30th. Enjoy this tiki drink by getting 2 for £12 at Number 25 in Rhos on Sea and celebrate this historic cocktail in style!

PLAS ISAF

Vidigal, Vinho Verde, Portugal 2023 – £9.50

Spritzy, zesty, refreshing and low in alcohol – there isn’t a better summer wine around. Just add sardines and it will make the Afon Conwy seem like the Tagus.

Having a glass or two of wine in the summer al fresco is surely one of life’s great joys. Whether you are sat in your garden, relaxing in a deckchair on the beach, or soaking up the sun in a beer garden, there is nothing better. All your cares seem to melt away when you have a glass of something cold and refreshing on a hot day. Your own garden can feel like a holiday abroad when having friends around for a cheeky barbecue on one of the rare days of beautiful weather that seem to have been in short supply this summer.

Think sardines grilling away, giving that perfect combination of charred skin and sweet flesh that makes you think of holidays in Portugal. Spicy Merguez sausages spitting away on the barbecue that couldn’t be more southern France if it tried. Crisp, fresh salads from the garden using your home-grown tomatoes that make it feel like you are in Puglia. These summer flavours happily pair nicely with a glass of wine. Here are some wines that will transport you to somewhere more exotic, even if the weather does let us down.

Tanners French Rosé, Côtes de Gascogne, France 2022 - £10.50

Tanners’ very own pale pink favourite from south-west France is full of fresh strawberry fruit, and at 11% abv very easy to drink for a summer lunch. Both these wines are perfect with tomato salads too.

Pacto Palhete, Douro Tinto, Carvalho Martins, Portugal 2022 - £13.20

If you’re having a barbecue, you’re going to need a red wine too. The Pacto Palhete is made in a style to be drunk cool, just like they do in the Douro, so don’t be afraid to stick it in the fridge for an hour or so. Super refreshing.

No.1 Rosé, Coteaux d’Aixen-Provence, Domaine Pey Blanc, France 2023 - £17.20

Rosé is the summer drink, and the pale, limpid rosés from Provence are what everybody wants in their glass right now. Pey Blanc’s terrific rosé regularly beats the big names in blind tastings.

Hencote Evolution, English Sparkling Wine, Shropshire 2022 - £16.00

Sparkling wine from Shropshire? Yes, and very good it is too! Hencote are based just to the north of Shrewsbury, and this sparkling wine has a nose that is just like walking around a summer garden with flavours of apple, pear and elderflower.

Domaine de l’Amandine

Rouge, Côtes du Rhône, France 3 litre BIB - £49.00

On a more classic note, if you have a few friends around for some sausages and burgers, plump for the soft, juicy Rhône from Domaine de l’Amandine, which happens to also comes in a handy three-litre (equivalent to four bottles) box. Just the ticket!

Mathew Evans is the North Wales, Area Sales Manager for Tanners Wines, creating wine lists for some of the best restaurants and bars in the area. He has worked for Tanners for over 13 years and is also a Certified Educator for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. He is originally from Llandudno Junction and still lives in the area. When he’s not talking about wine, he can be found watching football at Wrexham AFC, rugby league at North Wales Crusaders RLFC or playing Masters Rugby League for North Wales Buccaneers.

Food for thought

In the midst of a clear-out recently I found some long lost treasure. I’d been thinking about a cook book I’d had when I was a child and had even been trying to find it on eBay but to no avail. Then, hidden within a pile of film magazines I’d stowed away (in the deluded hope that they’d be worth a fortune in the future) it reappeared like magic.

Titled, with brutal straightforwardness, ‘Things To Do With Food’, it contained just twelve colourfully illustrated recipes, every one of which I made when I was just a nipper. These included making your own butter, pizzas and even sherbet.

I found it just in time because suddenly the summer holidays stretched ahead and yet again I found myself aware that I had

1/4 cup of desiccated coconut

2 teaspoons of honey

1 teaspoon of milk

Mix the cheese, milk and honey very well with a fork. Stir the nuts into the mixture.

Pour the coconut onto a tray and with a spoon, lift out a ball of the cheese mix and roll it onto the coconut until you have a coconut-covered ball. Set aside and repeat with the rest of the mix. Put some cling film over the plate and leave them in the fridge. They’ll be ready to eat in an hour.

nothing planned to entertain the young one. (There are, of course, almost limitless things for the kids to do in North Wales this summer.)

I’m sure there are all manner of children’s cook books out there and online too, and of course it is incredibly important to teach your children how to love cooking. If you want a pair of kid-friendly recipes circa. 1983, I humbly offer these two, which were a great success. If you want added authenticity, put something on by Kim Wilde or Nik Kershaw. That’s probably what I was listening to the last time I made them.

COCONUT ICE

Ingredients

Half a tin of condensed milk 1 cup of icing sugar

1 cup of desiccated coconut (that must have been really popular back then!)

Stir the icing sugar to break up any large lumps. Add the coconut. Then slowly pour in the condensed milk. Pound the mixture with a wooden spoon as you pour. The Mixture will be a stiff lump when all the milk is used. Put said lump on a cling filmed tray with sides and roll it out into a flat slab. Sprinkle that with icing sugar and leave it overnight to harden. The next day cut it into cubes. (These can be wrapped in colourful cellophane paper and given away as presents.)

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

FREE

energy grants

Free grant funding via Ecology Energy is available to eligible households for a range of home insulation, heating upgrades and solar.

If your property has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G and you are in receipt of any benefits, or are a “low income” household, then you may be eligible for a free energy grant.

How do the grant’s work?

1) Apply - Complete Ecology Energy’s online application form and they will contact you to check that you qualify for free insulation, heating upgrades or solar through the ECO4 scheme.

2) Survey - Once they have confirmed that you qualify, they will arrange for industry accredited installation partners to provide a free survey of your property which will provide you with an idea of how much energy you can save.

3) Install - Ecology Energy will arrange the installation of your free home upgrades by one of their industry awardwinning accredited installation partners.

Solar Panel Grants

Ecology Energy know just how vital it is to provide quality solar PV (Photovoltaic) systems and an outstanding service, all the time, to their customers in the United Kingdom. Ecology Energy specialise in sustainable energy systems and excel in the supply and installation of solar panels, solar energy materials and solar cells that save energy and give their customers real value for money.

Heating Systems Grants

Grants are available for eligible customers for the following heating systems:

J Air Source Heat Pumps - An Air Source Heat Pump is a

type of heat pump that extracts the heat directly from the surrounding air and transfers this heat to a usable heat for heating your home and water. By design, an air source pump is most suited to an external location, where it can have access to free-flowing air with which to interact, though systems can be designed to use air ducted from external sources or air recovery systems.

J Gas Boilers - Only quality A-rated boilers installed, up to 12 years manufacturers warranty included. Enjoy a warmer home and lower bills! Ecology Energy’s installation partners will only install reliable and efficient boilers, from the best boiler manufacturers available. All of the boiler installations come with a manufacturer’s warranty period.

J Home Insulation - Insulation is an excellent energy saving measure to prevent heat loss from your home. Loft insulation involves adding a barrier of insulation material to your roof space either between the joists (the horizontal beams on the floor of your loft/roof area) or the rafters (the angled support beams of the roof). Up to 25% of the heat from your home can be lost through the roof so having a well-insulated loft can make a big difference!

J Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) - More than 50% of all heat loss from properties with solid walls happens by heat escaping through the lack of adequate insulation. Heat naturally always moves from warm areas to cold areas, and in winter when it’s far colder outside, heat will move at a rapid rate from your home and escape from uninsulated walls. Internal wall insulation is a fantastic alternative to external wall insulation as it is more cost effective and works more efficiently.

J Cavity Wall insulation - Did you know that up to one-third of your home’s heat may be lost as a result of poor cavity insulation? Modern insulation will provide you with a more comfortable home throughout the year while reducing the presence of any draughts. Not only will you enjoy lower energy bills, but the carbon footprint of your property will be lessened.

To be eligible for any of the above grants, your property must have an EPC rating of D, E, F or G – and you must be in receipt of any of the following benefits: Job Seekers’ Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Pension Credit, Working/Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Child Benefit. Alternatively you must be in a “low income” household, over the age of 65, have an illness or have a child under the age of five.

If any criteria apply to you then there is absolutely no cost for your home insulation, heating upgrades or solar. n

If you fall into the above criteria and would like to find out more, then complete the form on our website www.ecology-energy.co.uk, or call 0800 5244415 for further information

WRITING A WILL: ENSURING PEACE OF MIND FOR YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES

We often try to avoid thinking about it, but writing a will is one of the most crucial things you can do - not just for yourself, but for your family as well.

Emma Deering is a wills and probate specialist at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Conwy, and says writing a will brings your financial and practical affairs together, helping to protect your family’s future.

She says: “The most obvious benefit of a will is that it allows you to specify exactly how your estate will be distributed, ensuring your assets go to the people and causes you care about the most.

“However, if you have young children, a will is even more vital to ensure your wishes are followed, as you can use your will to appoint legal guardians if you pass away before they reach the age of 18.

“Without a will in place, the family courts will make these decisions – and they might not choose the guardians you would have preferred.”

Another important reason to write a will is to ensure your partner is taken care of. Dying without a will – known as “dying intestate” – means your estate is distributed according to a strict set of rules called the Rules of Intestacy.

“A lot of people think that if they own a house together, having been in a relationship for a long time, they would automatically inherit their partner’s estate – but that is a common misconception,” continues Emma.

“Under the Rules of Intestacy, unmarried partners are not automatically entitled to inherit anything, no matter how long you have been together. This can lead to unexpected and distressing situations for surviving partners who find themselves without any inheritance.

“By making a will, you can ensure your partner will receive their fair share of your estate in accordance with your wishes, providing clarity and security, reducing the potential for conflict among surviving family members.”

Writing a will is not often a topic for discussion around the dinner table, with people seeing it as morbid or uncomfortable. However, Emma says that the reality is actually quite the opposite.

“Rather than feeling awkward or morbid, we usually find clients are greatly reassured after going through the details of their will,” she says. “The process of articulating your wishes and ensuring they will be respected can be profoundly comforting.

“Once the will is signed and dated, you can relax knowing that your affairs are in order. Everything has been arranged, and your wishes will be carried out in a way that causes the least stress and difficulty for your loved ones.”

In essence, writing a will is not just about planning for the future, it’s about providing peace of mind in the present.

For those considering taking this important step, remember that it’s never too early to start.

Protecting your family and ensuring your wishes are honoured is one of the best gifts you can give them. n

Celebrating a Lifetime of Dedication:

Scott Owen

This month sees the end of an illustrious career spanning an incredible five decades for Scott Owen. Scott, the heart and soul of Tom Owen and Son Funeral Directors, will fully retire this year after 50 years of exemplary service as a funeral director based in Llandudno.

For four generations, Tom Owen and Son has set the highest standards of service and innovation within the Funeral industry. Since its humble beginnings in 1930, this family-run business has been a cornerstone of support and solace for countless families during their most trying times.

Scott Owen’s journey is not just a testament to his own resilience and work ethic, but also a continuation of a legacy built by his forefathers. As the third generation of the Owen family to join the business, Scott followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Tom, and his father, Peter, embodying the values of integrity, empathy, and commitment instilled in him from a young age. For many years he has served the local community with compassion, dignity, and kindness.

Throughout his tenure, Scott’s impact extended beyond the boundaries of his profession. Perhaps what truly sets Scott apart was his willingness to embrace innovation and adapt to change. From handling on-screen funerals for Coronation Street stars to overseeing modernisations within the company, Scott’s forward-thinking approach has ensured that Tom Owen and Son remains at the forefront of the industry.

Scott’s pride in the continuation of the family legacy is evident as the business remains in the capable hands of

his son, Tristan, and Tristan’s wife Kelly, the fourth generation of the Owen family to head the company. “I have nothing but admiration and pride for Tristan and Kelly,” he said. “They joined the business at an incredibly difficult time for everyone, with pandemic restrictions in place, and how they’ve begun to move the business forward while preserving its core values and traditions makes me very proud. They genuinely care about their community and setting up the ‘Coffee Connection’ bereavement support group has been a lifeline for the attendees. I can safely hang up my black suit, knowing that the family business is in extremely good hands.”

As Scott embarks on a new chapter of his life, we wish him a retirement filled with joy, fulfilment, and the same unwavering compassion that has defined his career. Thank you, Scott, for 50 years of service – and may your legacy continue to inspire generations to come. n
