At this time of year, many of our finest spring songsters are returning from warmer climates to breed here in North Wales. Easily overlooked despite the beautiful subtlety of their green-brown plumage, the reels, trills and soaring melodies of our visiting warblers sing out from our woodlands, reedbeds and treetops – some might even be making a nest in your own garden! HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PUPPY Getting a new puppy is very exciting but it can also be a little overwhelming, especially if you are a new pet parent. We here at petplace have some great advice and tips on how to start your journey into pet parenthood. There are a few things that should be set in place before you bring your new family member home. Source a vet in your local area where you can register your puppy, you will need to do this so they can have routine health checks, emergency treatments and follow up vaccinations. Quite often, if your puppy is from a charity or animal home the puppy will have been given their first round of vaccinations, if this is not the case then booking their first appointment is crucial. Routine will be key when house training your new pup. When you get your new puppy home, one of the first things you will want to do is master the art of toilet training.

Although, as we have already said, Pwllheli grew around the ship building industry, it really began to develop in the 1890’s when Cardiff Businessman Solomon Andrews invested in houses at West End and began upgrading the promenade. As a place to live Pwllheli gives residents a mixture of the old and traditional and the more modern and up to date. For many years tourists knew the town because of the large Butlins Holiday Camp which was located a few miles away at Pen-y-Chain. During the war it became a navel camp (HMS Glendower) but the holiday camp was re-established by Butlins after the war was over. The best of the Bay Bayside Radio is a community orientated radio station broadcasting primarily to the North Wales Coast, but is also available across North West Wales including Anglesey, the Llyn Peninsula and Meirionnydd, down to Cardigan and Fishguard, on the DAB + Digital Radio multiplex.
Bayside provides a relaxing mix of music throughout the day as well as local news and information which is good-to-know wherever you happen to be in the North Wales area. Bayside is the brainchild of Simon Wynne who worked for the BBC before moving to commercial radio in Warrington and Manchester. Simon was often asked why there wasn’t a community radio station in Colwyn Bay, so when he returned to live in the area he joined up with Jeff Pearson who was Mayor of the Bay of Colwyn and community radio presenter to bring the project alive. They were later joined by Ron Roberts who presented with Simon on Marcher Coast FM. Together they started Bayside which can be heard on DAB Digital Radio, on a range of smart speakers and online around the world. Simon takes care of all the technical side, as well as being the presenter of Good Morning Colwyn Bay each weekday morning from 8-00am. Jeff Pearson, who is Communities Director, presents his relaxing afternoon show from 12-00 – 4-00pm each weekday. Evenings have a distinctly different flavour for music fans of every genre. From 8 10pm are shows including The Monday Beat with Craig Hughes from the TV show Salvage Hunters The Restorer, Tuesday’s is Sounds Country with Jeff Pearson, Wednesday’s is Y Sioe Fawr with John Roberts and Thursday’s is Leons Rock and Roll Heaven with Leon Smith. On Fridays, Bayside presents two shows: From Broadway to Hollywood with Dilwyn Roberts (7 – 8pm), and The Eclectic Arena with Pete Williams (8 - 10pm). The evening shows are then repeated on a Sunday between 11am and 7pm. Jeff Pearson is an ordained minister and brings the Morning Service to Bayside every Sunday morning at 10am. While on Sunday at 7pm Cannon Quentin Bellamy presents The Sounds of the Merry Organ featuring all different types of Organ Music. This is followed ‘By All things Gospel’ presented by Jeff Pearson with all

Best chocolate ice cream in the UK comes from Conwy
Parisellas of Conwy has been crowned the chocolate ice cream kings of the UK at the National Ice Cream Championships 2022 run by the Ice Cream Alliance (ICA), the sector’s UK trade association. Their delicious chocolate ice cream beat all competition in this, the most prestigious ice cream competition in the country, which has been running for nearly 80 years.

affection for this great under-sung feast of a day. Forever the bridesmaid to Christmas’s showy bride, Easter Sunday is in fact a golden opportunity to stage the family dinner of your dreams, without any of the myriad unwanted demands of the Festive Season. You don’t need to give in to the pressure to make four times too much food, or spend time making sprouts and Christmas pudding that no one will eat in the end. You don’t need to drink advocaat and pretend to like it. Family members don’t feel compelled to drive across the country and dump themselves on you for five days. Plus, the absence of winter bugs means that unlike Christmas, there’s a very good chance that you won’t be bedridden on the big day, having spent 48 hours preparing food for everyone else. Here then is a terribly impressive centrepiece for your Easter table, that you can make the day before, so you can spend Sunday morning lying in bed as you work your way through the first batch of chocolate eggs.

Safety first Under new rules recently introduced by the Welsh government, private landlords are now required to complete electrical safety checks on their properties every five years. Dale Pritchard from DomElec explains…
All private residential landlords are used to having a Gas Safety Test done on their property every year. But now there is another mandatory test that you need to be aware of if you rent out a residential property in Wales – the Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR.
J Contact tenants directly and arrange appointments – all appointments are confirmed with with a text message
J We’ll collect keys from agents if required and return them J Certificates are issued by email in PDF format, with copies sent to the landlord and agents if required
J If remedial work is required, we’ll send a quotation The good news is that the EICR will only need to be undertaken every five years, but it is essential that it is carried out on time and by a qualified electrician. Landlords will also have to provide a copy of the electrical safety report to their tenants as well as to the local authority if requested.
along with the report. We’ll aim to get all work done within 28 days
J We work in a team of three, meaning we are able to carry out most inspections in around one hour, causing minimal disruptions for your tenants
J Reminders will be sent out to landlords when reinspection is due (normally every five years)

EDUCATION NEWS St David’s College on centre stage Last month saw St David’s College return to the stage with the whole school production of Disney’s Aladdin JR. Not to be confused with the traditional pantomime, this show is based on the 1992 Academy-Awardwinning film and 2014 hit Broadway and West End show about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within. Pupils were given the chance to showcase their incredible talents over four performances at Theatr Colwyn with St David’s College staff and pupils taking on all aspects of the production including make-up, sound, and lighting. “The pupils were all just absolutely amazing throughout the whole process,” said Jenny Appleton, Head of Faculty for Performing Arts at St David’s College. “The hard work that has been put into rehearsals, learning their lines, the dance routines; has been outstanding. The results of all that hard work were plain to see on stage – they were all magnificent.”

It’s game, set and match for Myddelton College
A leading North Wales independent school has gone from zeros to heroes with a pair of aces at the Tennis Wales National Awards. Three years ago the tennis courts at Myddelton College, in Denbigh, were a sorry sight, empty and uninviting, but a remarkable transformation has taken place and been rewarded. The outdoor hard courts are now restored and the lines repainted, the sports hall has excellent indoor facilities and over 100 pupils are taking part in regular sessions throughout the year. A Day in the life of a distillery team leader at Aber Falls Sam Foster, a distillery team leader at Aber Falls Whisky Distillery, has worked for the company for almost five years. During this time, Sam has worked his way up the business and furthered his qualifications and experience as a skilled distiller. Joining as a distillery operative, Sam was able to gain first-hand experience in distilling and the spirits sector while being supported to complete qualifications such as the General Certificate in Distilling through the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD). Reflecting on the role, Sam said: “It’s the level of autonomy you’re given and the opportunity to work in areas, and on projects, you have a genuine interest in that gives me such job satisfaction.” Aber Falls Distillery has a host of exciting events and product launches coming up next year and is looking to expand its team. IN THE
STARS...
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
April’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) Your stars increase your individual magnetism, bringing out the more assertive aspect of your personality. This is the perfect moment to begin aiming for the long-term goal. A relationship can be a surprise and can behave in ways that you wouldn’t have imagined. It might be difficult to be together. It can be challenging for you; however, you may need some stability in relationships.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) You’re full of energy and drive. Your colleagues will be inspired by your creative flair. Your appreciation for their ideas should make it simple for everyone to agree and then get to work. You might be worried that you and your partner were on different paths and had other aspirations. After the 10th, you’ll realise that you have many common interests, which can help maintain your bond.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) The private part of your life will be where you’ll be spending the most of your efforts. Anything that agitates you, like people or places, is going to require more time and effort. Some may believe that love is more in line with words than actions. At present, you don’t agree. If someone is looking to take your heart and keep it for the rest of their lives, they must get to know you emotionally.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) If you’re looking to improve your appearance, now is the best time to make an effort. The most essential things in your life are work and health. It’s not going to stop your thoughts from being enticed by romance and love. However, you’re aware of your obligations to others and you will not let them down.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) Essential decisions you need to make when the month starts can be mentally draining. The good thing is that any doubt about whether you’re making the correct decision will vanish by the 8th and you’ll begin to feel more at ease with your emotions and life. There isn’t an ideal time to express your emotions in close friendships and relationships. CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) The new moves you make will provide future advantages. Be sure to keep everyone whose life could impact the decisions informed about any changes. The romance is growing and new friendships are being formed. You are committed to your relationships and you know that it’s not enough to see one another on occasion.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) Your dreams are possible and they can come true. What actions and plans are you taking to realise your goals and goals? The process of planning will assist you in achieving your goals. Make sure your feet are planted on the ground and stay focussed on the practical aspect of things. Romance might not be more straightforward as you know you’re looking for more out of life. CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) The family will be top of the list of priorities for you now. The relationships in your home and any home-based projects shared with your family will run smoothly and efficiently due to the time and effort you put into these. Your housemates will be impressed by your enthusiasm. You might not have been expecting it to be that simple.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) You’re a unique person with unique ideas and you shouldn’t allow a person to denigrate you. You can sing to your own music, dress how you like to dress and love and live your life the way you want to. You deserve to be loved just for your own uniqueness and not based on what others want to see in you. You require disclosure of some sort.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) A new job or lucrative chance is worth taking. Unexpected twists and turbulences will cause a bit of a bump for a while, but after that, all is going to be fine. You may feel like you’re riding a rollercoaster in April as the month starts. Making a move to a different career or lifestyle could be challenging; however, it can also be exciting. It isn’t clear how this will impact your relationships.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) You’re more enthusiastic and less passive in relationships or romance, which can cause others to take you, who are familiar with you, to be taken by surprise. One advantage is that you’ll have the confidence to speak about what’s you’re thinking about. Trust and honesty are the foundation of relationships. Trust is worth more than gold.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) A chance to take advantage of an offer causes you to hesitate. It is possible that you are worried you’d be foolish or that you might be putting too much pressure on yourself by imagining unrealistic dreams. Put aside any doubts. Be confident that you can and will accomplish whatever goals have significance to your life right now.
