The Menai Strait is stunning at the best of times, but when it’s in front of a snowy backdrop something magical happens… The name Menai comes from main-aw or main-wy, meaning “narrow water”, although the Strait actually varies in width from 400 metres from Fort Belan to Abermenai Point, to 1,100 metres from Traeth Gwyllt to Caernarfon Castle. The bridge itself was completed in 1826, and was the first fixed connection to the mainland from the Isle of Anglesey. Designed by Thomas Telford, the Menai Suspension Bridge is now a Grade I listed structure, and you can walk below it courtesy of the Anglesey Coastal Path.

FIELD DAY A year ago people would have thought that a pair of Hollywood superstars buying Wrexham AFC was mearly a pipe dream – but in 2021 it’s the football clubs reality. Lowri Llewelyn discusses what goals the pair have for the club…
Just when we thought 2020 couldn’t feel any more like a parallel universe, Hollywood legends Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took ownership of Wrexham AFC. Their interest came following an uncertain time for the club after staff were furloughed and players took temporary pay cuts. When asked “Why Wrexham?” It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and actor McElhenney responded “Why not Wrexham?” The team, now the third oldest international football team in the

The club had been fan-owned since 2011 following a series of financial mismanagement by owners. Ahead of the vote, in which fans would

club and fans, which included exploring the renovation of the Racecourse Ground and improving the venue for the club (“for international matches and perhaps, the occasional Tom Jones gig”). The Racecourse Ground is the oldest international football stadium in the world, having played host to international matches for over a century, so an upgrade would certainly be well deserved.

The pair also intend to use their resources to grow the exposure of the club, “in concert with protecting the heart and spirit of a community-led historical icon. Why can’t the third oldest club in the world have a global appeal?” They also promised to bring positive change to the wider Wrexham community, as well as taking advantage of increased interest in Wrexham, both locally and internationally. North Wales has certainly enjoyed increased exposure of late as it establishes itself as

the northern hemisphere’s outdoor adventure capital, while ITV’s decision to film I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! at Gwrych Castle was a welcome change for fans of the series. It’s becoming clear that North Wales is fully capable of holding its own on the world stage and endorsement from Rob and Ryan will only bring further prosperity to the region. The pair concluded their outline by saying, “We hope you’ll put your trust in us, because we’ll work every day, for as long as you’ll have us, to ensure the world knows that Wrexham is the name.” In response, a whopping 98.6% of trust members eligible to vote backed the takeover in November. The pair quickly pitched Ifor Williams Trailers Ltd. in a Wrexham AFC video, which went viral within an hour. In

of Nant Gwrtheyrn is the modern form of a centuries old settlement. Like the rest of the island of Britain, North Wales is dotted with remnants of lost villages which became victims of circumstance. Nestled in a remote spot between the Yr Eifl mountain and the sea overlooking a headland, Nant Gwrtheyrn’s position is idyllic. The surrounding area known as the Nant was inhabited from at least 150 BC when the quarrying of iron ore began. Iron was vital for making weapons that warring factions of the time used, and the location was named after King Brenin Gwrtheyrn who fled to the area to avoid

relied on burning cow dung for heating. The fortunes of Nant Gwrtheyrn changed with the advent of industrial quarrying of granite for use in road building. Around 1861 the Kneeshaw and Lupton company opened a quarry and built a jetty for loading setts (rectangular blocks of granite) onto ships for transportation. A row of houses, known as the Barics, was also built to house the workers. More houses were needed by 1878 after other quarries had opened – two rows of cottages were placed in an L shape. In the 1880s the census listed 200 people living in the area, mostly quarry workers. Though many of the original

forgotten hamlet of Rhiwddolion can be found. Once having a population of about 150, it was home to miners working the East Arvon slate quarry who lived in small cottages and who had a chapel which doubled up as the school. When the mine closed in the early 20th Century it became another victim of circumstance as people left this remote and peaceful setting to seek work elsewhere. Unlike some other lost villages, Rhiwddolion now straddles the past and present. Though several buildings are stone shells being reclaimed by vegetation, three have been modernised as Landmark Trust holiday cottages. The modern

Tree stumps and part of a stone wall in the drowned village of Capel Celyn (Oosoom, Creative Commons CC BY-SA 3.0)
Nant Gwrtheyrn and mining communities were not unusual in suffering a slow exodus until only a ghost village remained to crumble with the ravages of time – yet other places had displacement forced upon them. When water levels in the Llyn Celyn reservoir north-west of Bala are low, tree stumps and the outline of a stone wall can be seen. These are a rare glimpse of the submerged village of Capel Celyn which was sacrificed to provide water for the city of Liverpool. The people of Capel Celyn discovered the proposed dam and flooding of their Tryweyrn valley from press reports. Understandably they didn’t accept the prospect of eviction from their homes without a fight. To oppose the plan the Tryweyrn Defence Committee was formed. More than just a grassroots organisation, it attracted support from Plaid Cymru and high profile MPs such as Megan Lloyd George. Despite

compulsory purchase of land for the creation of the reservoir. This wasn’t the first time a Welsh community suffered upheaval for Liverpool. In the 1880s Llanwddyn was flooded to make way for a dam, and the residents were re-housed in a new Llanwddyn that was built a couple of miles away. Local anger spilled over into attempted sabotage of the Tryweyrn dam, but that failed to stop its construction which completed in 1965. Resentment about the project lingered even decades later, so in 2005 Liverpool City Council agreed to formally apologise for the shoddy treatment of the valley’s people. Over centuries many settlements were emptied and left barely a trace in the landscape, or were hidden underwater. Nant Gwrtheyrn’s re-purposing saved the quarry workers’ cottages and gives visitors a chance to see what their small homes

were like. The ruins of Dylife and Rhiwddolion are a reminder of a time past – and the ever-changing face of civilisation. n

Keeping health simple in 2021 It’s a New Year and, as always, resolutions to get healthier abound. The good news is that making healthier choices are easier than ever…
Do you find that health can be overcomplicated sometimes? There seems to be so much conflicting and confusing information out there that sometimes you end up feeling even more overwhelmed and stuck than before you started researching healthy changes. “I use five principles when encouraging people to get healthier,” says Mark Bryant of Fast Way to Fitness in Mochdre. “Action first, motivation second means that you have to start and, once you do, your motivation will follow. Rob King, aka The Fitness King, agrees that the health and fitness industry is confusing and intimidating. “The amount of information out there can often leave you overwhelmed with what diet is the best, and what training is going to serve you and your goals – leaving you confused and not really knowing what to do,” he says.

What matters is that you are out there, doing it, and enjoying North Wales. “There has been a boom in cycling over the past 12 months, and particularly in electric bikes, which make lots of areas, especially around here, more accessible,” concludes Gareth. “You still get a work out and exercise on an electric bike, the difference is people are able to go further, and explore more than they would on a non-electric bike. Electric bikes are helping to get people who wouldn’t cycle normally, back out on a bike and enjoying fresh air and the beauty of North Wales.” n

Food for thought
Well, let’s not do anything as silly as 2020 ever again shall we? What a nightmare! I know it’s not quite over yet, but with the vaccination programme in full swing and the genuine prospect that No Time To Die is finally going to be released in April, surely hope is in legitimately bountiful supply. Blwydden Newydd Dda, Try something a little new 2020 was a year that tested us in many ways. We are working, learning and living differently. Over the last year I have been enjoying food and wine differently. Normally I would try new wines by selecting them in a bar or restaurant, or more likely by relaxing and taking a journey through the list on offer at our tasting counter. With those options (at the time of writing) not available I’ve been trying different wines at home. I’ve been pairing with foods and enjoying on evenings in front of the TV. The layout in the shop has always given the ability to take your tastes and test them in a controlled way. Find a wine you like, move a bottle or two in one direction and you find something similar but lighter or fruitier. The other direction and heavier, spicier or oakier. To make it slightly easier here is a selection of some wines to try, some ways to push your boundaries, or look for something new. This lovely kitchen in Old Colwyn was fitted by Kitchens of Conwy, with Howdens units and a bespoke Quartz worktop in the centre island supplied by Ruby Granite in Mochdre. Kitchen islands are all the rage, and it’s no surprise when you think about all of the extra storage that they provide. They are also a very social space, as they allow for informal seating – which is even more important at the moment if your dining table has become a home school or office! kitchensofconwy.co.uk

director Sion Pritchard believes working closely with some of the industry’s top names enabled them to manage an increase in online orders during the initial lockdown, and continue to provide for the needs of their customers in the following months. Among those to have helped them along the way were Vital Pet Group, Adios, PetSafe, Danish Design Pet Products and Nature’s Menu, who presented PetPlace with their inaugural Retailer of the Month Award recently. “Having such a strong connection with our suppliers and partners has been crucial during the pandemic,” said Sion. “We have always worked closely together but when online sales began to increase and we moved to click and collect, the flexibility and positivity of our suppliers in the trade enabled us to meet demand and respond quickly.
