From Denbigh to deepest Africa Dene Bebbington tells the tale of Henry Morton Stanley – the North Walian journalist who famously tracked down Dr Livingstone…
The depths of Sub-Saharan Africa remained a mystery to most Europeans in the 19th Century. So how, in that era of exploration, did a Denbigh boy consigned to the workhouse become a famous American newspaper reporter who’s still remembered for finding Dr. David Livingstone? Near the end of January 1841 the Welsh market town saw the birth of another boy. This illegitimate child, baptised as

After being released, a job with the United States Navy as a ship’s writer set him on course for the occupation he’d eventually earn fame from. Various freelance commissions and a salaried job at the Missouri Democrat newspaper helped him land assignments from the New York Herald working for James Gordon Bennett Jr – the man whose name notoriously lives on in the exclamation “Gordon Bennett”.

As a roving journalist, Stanley reported on events in various parts of the world including Africa, the Middle East and India. One day while in Paris he was summoned to the Grand Hotel where Bennett told him to find Livingstone, the famous

On 10 November 1871 at Ujiji, Tanzania, he finally found the missionary and reputedly uttered the immortal words of greeting “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”. Such was the slowness of communication that it took until July 1872 for the news to reach America and be reported to the world by the Herald. Stanley continued to receive accolades and live restlessly in Africa. He didn’t settle down until marrying Dolly Tennant at Westminster Abbey in 1890 and adopting a boy called Denzil. Though still harbouring resentment about his early life in Wales, Dolly persuaded him to accept an invitation to preside over the Eisteddfod. The Drifters Girl boasts an incredible soundtrack of some of the most famous songs in history, including Save The Last Dance For Me, Under The Boardwalk, Kissin In The Back Row Of The Movies, Stand By Me, Come On Over To My Place, Saturday Night At The Movies and many more. “I’m really looking forward to seeing how the audience responds,” commented Carly Mercedes Dyer, who plays Faye Treadwell. “I know they are going to be blown away by the magnitude of the talent of the company because our Drifters are something else. I just don’t know how they find these people that have the vocal range and the acting ability to put on so many different hats. The cast is incredible and the buzz from the audience is going to be electric. They’re in for a great time. I also hope they come away knowing more about who the backbone behind The Drifters was and how much tenacity went into keeping them going. Faye has such a great heart, such great commitment and resilience.” n

Yr Hen Stablau
When you stay at Yr Hen Stablau you relax in a beautiful, sensitively converted 1840s stable building (Yr Hen Stablau is Welsh for The Old Stables). Their idea was to conserve a beautiful farm building, to create an environmentally friendly building and to support the local economy and culture, and the accommodation is as environmentally friendly as they have been able to make it! What this means to you is a warm and cosy place to stay, no paint fumes or other air pollution, and a cottage that doesn’t spoil the beautiful area you have chosen to visit. Yr Hen Stablau is within easy reach of nature reserves, picturesque mountains, sandy coastline, scenic footpaths and green hillsides: this is a haven where you can really get away from it all. It is also an excellent base for a more active holiday in Snowdonia – easy access to climbing, mountain biking, golf, narrow gauge railways, castles, art galleries and shops. selfcateringcottagewales.co.uk

The pawfect place is dedicated to both dogs and humans!
Dudley & George’s is much more than a regular dog store. In fact, it’s the only one of its kind in the area. It’s filled with products for humans and homes too. It’s a community for dog owners to come together and learn about being the best dog parents they can be. Just as a dog’s personality and needs are unique, so too is the way they communicate. Dudley & George’s provides an environment where you can feel comfortable asking for what your pup requires –whether it be with food puzzles to help keep those teeth clean or learning how to interact with other dogs. In fact, Dudley and George’s is a space where you can interact with each other – as well as with your furry friends. Whether you want to learn more about your best friend, buy them a toy, or just meet other like-minded people for a coffee, this unique store is the ideal place to visit. Meanwhile the in-house café has got both tongues and tails wagging across Llandudno. Two-legged visitors are treated to house roasts from an exclusive roast from South Wales’ Big Dog Coffee, as well as guest roasts from the likes of Colonna, Sweven and A.M.O.C And, if you’re enjoying something tasty from the array of homemade bakes that fill the counter each morning, it’s only right to treat your furry companion too. A menu full of nutritional eats designed consciously for canines includes the likes of turkey superfood salad and wild rice with wheatgrass and salmon. Established by founder Jason Pinnick, the ethos of Dudley and George’s is a simple one – that dogs deserve the same luxury as humans. As a result they focus on selling planet-friendly products and all-natural foods, and you will find a wide range of home, gift and beauty products for yourself, your friends, family and – most importantly – your dog! n
The team at Dudley & George’s are always excited to meet new four-legged companions and their humans. Visit them at 127 Mostyn St, Llandudno, LL30 2PE – or shop online at www.dudleyandgeorges.co.uk

A helping Hand The Hand at Llanarmon is an ancient hostelry with all the attributes you’d expect – bags of character, a cosy, relaxing ambience and a warm welcome from your hosts, Jonathan and Jackie Greatorex. As soon as you arrive you feel the weight of the world dissolving as the surroundings work their magic. All the classic ingredients are here – old beams, roaring fireplaces, a casual mix-and-match of pine and oak furniture, real ale and good food. The latter is seriously good. Thanks to the talents of Head Chef Grant Mulholland and his team, The Hand is renowned for award-winning food; an inventive marriage of country fare and sophisticated metropolitan cuisine.
The bedrooms, in a variety of sizes, have all been decorated to a high standard and boast sparkling modern bathrooms, highspeed wifi, satellite TV and all the amenities that you would expect from a country house hotel, including stunning new Spa facilities. Country lovers just love the location. You can walk in the Berwyns for hours with only the sheep for company and the ever-helpful Hand can arrange many country pursuits, including horse riding, fishing and shooting. You may be away from it all, but you’ll also be in the swing of things; this gem of a country inn is so much a part of village life that locals and visitors mix in unaffected harmony. n

As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce

HOW TO AVOID PROBLEMS AND PITFALLS IN FAMILY LAW CASES Honesty is always the best policy when it comes to any legal agreement or divorce proceedings – otherwise you risk serious trouble further down the line.
Caroline Yorke
That’s the advice from lawyers based at a North Wales law firm, who discuss the common pitfalls faced by clients in a new podcast, which is available now. Jon Moriarty and Caroline Yorke, of Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, Jon Moriarty

Inflation pledge met, but what’s next?
The Prime Minister has met his pledge of halving inflation, but we’re not out of the woods yet.
In the first week of 2023, the then still new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, set out “five immediate priorities” for his government. The first of these was: “We will halve inflation this year to ease the cost of living and give people financial security.” At the time, the latest published inflation figure was for November 2022, which showed the annual CPI figure at 10.7%. The December 2022 figure, published in midJanuary, dropped slightly to 10.5%. Whether Mr Sunak’s goal was 5.35%, 5.25% or some other similar number, the target appeared a strange choice for pole position because:
J The government has little control over inflation, a task that it primarily delegates to the Bank of England; and
J The Treasury’s own comparison of independent economic Source: ONS, Ofgem.
forecasts showed the average forecast for the inflation in the final quarter of 2023 to be 5.0%, making the pledge seem little more an agreement with consensus opinion.
However, inflation falling to 4.6% does not mean that prices generally are falling – the drop in energy costs over the

Learning by heart As the new calendar year begins, the minds of many parents turn towards the educational options that await their children come September. Whether it is the approaching leap to secondary education in Year 7, the start of GCSE and A-Level study in Years 10 and 12, or simply the desire for a more nurturing and challenging environment, there are many reasons for families to consider their choice of school.
Every year we see new Sixth Form pupils, once hesitant to leave their existing friends, form lifelong connections as they seize every opportunity our school offers. Or GCSE and A-Level candidates on Results Day, celebrating grades that once seemed beyond their grasp, before setting out to the universities of their dreams. Whether your child needs an environment with a stronger academic direction to help realise their potential, or a more closely-knit community that can help foster personal and social flourishing, moving to Rydal Penrhos is not just a change of school; it is a life-changing decision. The pathway for a child or young person to study at Rydal Penrhos is open to all families thanks to our fee assistance opportunities. As a Methodist school and registered charity, we are committed to making our exceptional educational provision accessible to any child, regardless their background or financial situation. For prospective pupils and their families, there are three types of scholarship award available at Rydal Penrhos: Fully Funded Places, Scholarship Premiums and Bursaries. Stunning locations for business events in North Wales
A series of events is celebrating a new year of bringing business people together in stunning and inspiring locations across North Wales. The informal networking meetings, called 4NorthWales, are organised by Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors and Barclays Bank, and have taken in a range of venues since being launched in October 2022. Emma Deering, of Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices in Conwy and provides legal support for clients all over North Wales, said she was delighted with the success of the 4NorthWales events. “We all know how important it is in business to meet new people and build contacts, but we didn’t want to create just another networking event,” she explained. “We wanted 4NorthWales to be different, so made an effort to find stunning and inspiring locations – which North Wales is fortunate enough to have lots of – and to make each event informal and enjoyable. It’s been really pleasing to see attendance numbers grow over the year, with people often complimenting the venues, some of which have been new discoveries for them. We have been to Dylan’s in Conwy, The Bank Wine Bar in Wrexham, Ocean’s Edge with its amazing views over Trearddur Bay, just to name a few.” info@lblaw.co.uk

IN CONVERSATION WITH
Conwy Mind January, often perceived as a fresh start, is paradoxically shadowed by what has come to be known as Blue Monday – the third Monday of the month, considered the most depressing day of the year. Blue Monday, serves as a symbolic reminder of the struggles many face in maintaining mental wellbeing. The weight of grief can be amplified during this time, urging us to reflect not only on the losses we’ve experienced but also on the importance of mental health support for ourselves and our loved ones.
We were delighted to be able to speak with Nikki Jones, Fundraising & Community Engagement Officer, at Conwy Mind

J “It has completely changed my life for the better and I can’t thank you enough. Every aspect of my life has improved because of the knock-on effects of this program.”
J “Conwy Mind has exceeded my needs and I feel so much better. I did not think I would come out the other end of anxiety so quickly, but I feel as though my mentor has really driven my road to recovery a lot quicker. I felt heard and understood.”
J “Best decision I made was to get help and learn to talk about my feelings rather than lock them away.”

MAGAZINE
IN THE
STARS...
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
January’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) you a glowing reference. It will feel good to have your contributions recognised. People will not mind stopping whatever they are doing on the 15th to give you their time. All you have to do is ask for the help, advice or support you are in need of.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) It will feel wonderful on the 1st to focus on projects that have deep personal meaning for you. You’re tired of being expected to help advance other people’s interests and your New Year’s Resolution will be to break this cycle. Fulfilling your own desires makes you happier, more confident and more aware of your own abilities.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) A scent, song or message will fill you with nostalgia on the 1st. A trip down memory lane will be as sweet as it is painful. A loved one will encourage you to put a stored item on display in a special corner of a favourite room. Through no fault of your own, a short trip will be postponed on the 6th. Be ready for a change of plans.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) Your ability to communicate is off the chart on the 1st. People will adjust their own ideas once they hear your suggestions and proposals. The new moon on the 11th makes it a great time to launch a blog or website. You will attract a loyal following very quickly.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) Some complicated matters on the 1st will have you pacing back and forth wondering which way things are going to turn. By the 9th information you have been waiting for will arrive and this should put you out of your misery. A commission, legacy or bonus will be awarded to you on the 11th. In business the new moon will prompt you to call in a few favours.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) Family plans will be delayed on the 1st. You want to be in motion but when everything comes to a standstill you can’t hurry things along. A brisk walk will be a healthy outlet for frustration. Coming to terms with a partner’s changing needs makes you more sensitive and understanding. Encourage them to pursue their dreams on the 9th.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) Nothing is going to change if you won’t talk over things you aren’t happy about. The new moon on the 11th encourages you to have a heart to heart discussion. You and a partner need to spend more time together. Remember how happy you used to be. You can rekindle this relationship once you start focusing on each other’s needs.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) You will be easily distracted on the 6th and because of the confusion and frustration it will take a while to get back on track. Getting results will take longer than expected but don’t give up. When you formulate a plan on the 11th the new moon will encourage you to stick with your intentions. Maintain a positive outlook on the 12th and the going will get easier.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) Whether you are happy with the situation or not, you could end up caught up in the affairs of close friends and family on the 1st. This means you won’t be able to get on with other things you intended to do. People will be grateful when you put your interests aside for their sake. The new moon on the 11th reminds you of the importance of striking a healthy balance between work and family life.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) Happy thoughts of times gone by should be cherished on the 1st but don’t let your fondness for the past deprive you of joy in the present. It’s not like you to wallow in nostalgia. An unusual therapy will bring relief from a nagging health problem on the 10th. Do some research into healing professionals who specialise in cases like your own.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) You won’t be happy about having your routine disrupted on the 1st but your mood will lift on the 5th when you get to take a trip to a beautiful location. You will also enjoy this chance for a change of scenery. Being surrounded by greenery is therapeutic. Something that is broken can be fixed on the 11th. The new moon supports taking practical measures to ensure problems aren’t repeated.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) Listen to your body on the 1st. Late nights, rich food and alcohol are taxing your system. Get treatment if you are struggling with an addiction. Stop swimming against the tide on the 8th and face the facts of a difficult situation. If family life is chaotic, pour your energy into your work. Force yourself to go out and mingle on the 11th. Some wonderful friendships will emerge under a friendly new moon.
