Prestatyn Exploring

Bethany Birch visits Prestatyn, and discovers a seaside town with something for everyone...

Surrounded by stunning hillsides and nestled between long stretches of sandy beaches, Prestatyn is where rugged mountains meet the beautiful coast. This charming seaside town in Denbighshire offers a blend of natural beauty, recreational activities and cultural attractions. With a population of just over 19,000, this seaside gem provides visitors an exciting escape with its beaches and dunes, scenic walking trails and local amenities.

Prestatyn’s beaches are a major draw, offering miles of golden sand and captivating views of the Irish Sea. The town’s three main beaches form a five-mile stretch interspersed with rock groynes – Central Beach, a Seaside Award winner, is generally the most popular stretch of beach. With miles of sand, there’s plenty of room to spend your days building sandcastles, crafting moats, and jumping waves. Whereas for water sports lovers, Barkby Beach is the go-to destination to get out on the water and enjoy some thrills.

A walk along Prestatyn’s promenade offers the perfect chance to inhale the fresh sea air and take in the impressive coastal scenery. The promenade links the town’s beaches, creating a straight path ideal for walkers and cyclists. The North Wales Cycle Trail and the North Wales Coastal Path also converge on the seafront, providing excellent routes for exploring the area. For cycling enthusiasts, Rhyl’s Marsh Tracks cycling centre is nearby, featuring a kilometrelong road cycling track and a BMX race track replicating the London 2012 BMX course. The Olympic team has tried it, so why not take the opportunity to follow in their tracks!

The town’s high street and retail parks are perfect for those in search of a spot of retail therapy, featuring a diverse range of shops, restaurants, cafés, pubs, bars and takeaways.

Whether you’re looking for a unique gift, a delicious meal, an afternoon spent at the arcade or crazy golf course, or simply a spot of window shopping, Prestatyn has something to offer.

History and nature enthusiasts will find Prestatyn’s walking trails particularly appealing. The Offa’s Dyke Path National 177-mile walking trail, named after King Offa of Mercia, offers a historical journey through the stunning Prestatyn Hillside before descending into the town. A trip up Gwaenysgor hillside offers a roadside viewpoint with parking, providing breathtaking views over Prestatyn, Rhyl, and, on clear days, the Isle of Man and Cumbria.

Prestatyn is proud to be a “Walkers are Welcome’’ community, reflecting its commitment to providing excellent walking experiences for all ages and abilities. The “You’ll Never Walk Alone” social walking scheme encourages residents and

visitors to explore various trails while making new friends and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Led by trained volunteer Walk Leaders, these walks cater to all ages and abilities, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the local landscape at their own pace. So, pull on your boots and get outdoors – there’s plenty of ground to cover to keep you happy!

Fancy a wander through nature? Prestatyn is home to several gardens and parks, perfect for a stroll or a family picnic. The Coronation Gardens, developed in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Mary and George V, offer a tranquil retreat with beautifully maintained flower beds and green spaces. These gardens, along with other play parks in the area, provide plenty of opportunities for children to burn some energy and enjoy the great outdoors as their playground.

Come rain or shine, Prestatyn has the whole family covered. Indoor activities abound in Prestatyn, with Nova standing out as a top attraction. This extensive facility features a stateof-the-art fitness suite, a three-story beach-themed indoor adventure soft play area, a 25-metre swimming pool and a sea-view restaurant. Whether you’re looking to stay active, entertain the kids, or simply relax with a meal overlooking the sea, Nova has something for everyone.

For a taste of local history and culture, the Scala Cinema and Arts Centre is a must-visit. Originally opened in 1913 by a local cinema lover, the cinema has been revitalised as a modern cultural hub. It screens a variety of films, from the latest blockbusters to classic movies, pantomime and opera performances. It’s the perfect place to relax, switch off from the outdoor world, and escape for an hour or two with a brilliant movie.

Golf enthusiasts can enjoy two top-class courses in Prestatyn. The Prestatyn Golf Club, a championship links course, and the St Melyd Golf Club, a mature parkland course with tree-lined fairways, offer unique challenges and stunning views. Both clubs provide warm welcomes to both long-term members and holiday golfers. The Prestatyn Golf Club, situated on unspoiled

links land, enjoys a temperate climate that allows for yearround play. St Melyd, with its 9-hole course and 18 tees, offers varied perspectives and a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Prestatyn’s location also provides easy access to other attractions in North Wales, such as the Rhyl Miniature Railway and Gronant Dunes. The Rhyl Miniature Railway offers scenic rides around Marine Lake, where visitors can enjoy the charm of vintage steam trains. About three miles to the east of the town, Gronant Dunes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), is home to rare species like the sand lizard and natterjack toad, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and those looking for a quieter spot to explore.

With direct routes to major cities like London, Chester and Manchester, Prestatyn is well-connected by national train services for day trips and weekend breaks. For residents of Prestatyn, these train connections also make it wonderfully accessible to visit cities such as Cardiff or Birmingham for a short city break. If you fancy staying close by, then just ten minutes’ travel by car will take you to the local towns of Rhyl and Talacre; near or far, there’s plenty to see and do in and around this seaside town.

This charming town on the North Wales coast is a destination worth visiting, promising memories laced with sand and sea air. Whether you’re exploring its scenic beaches, enjoying a walk along historic trails, enjoying a round of crazy golf, or savouring a warm parcel of fish and chips shore side, Prestatyn has something for everyone. n

Bethany Birch is a freelance writer who often seeks inspiration from the beauty of North Wales. Chasing beautiful beaches and the invigorating sea air, she loves to write by the water’s edge. Watching the sunset by the sea, glass in hand, is her ultimate bliss...

FareShare Cymru believes that no food should go to waste in Wales…

Around 400,000 tonnes of food goes to waste in Wales each year, much of it still good to eat. If just 1% of that was saved, it could be used to provide over nine million meals – enough to provide three meals to every person in Wales. Simultaneously, a quarter of the population of Wales is facing poverty and struggling to access quality, nutritious food. Thousands of people across the country are experiencing food insecurity and are regularly going hungry.

FareShare Cymru was established in 2010 and delivers surplus, good-to-eat food that might otherwise go to waste to charities and community groups in every corner of Wales. Today FareShare Cymru has distributed tonnes of surplus food to a network of groups and organisations across Wales that provide food and other essential services to people in need. From cookery classes and launch clubs in community centres, to school breakfast clubs, stocking the shelves of community pantries and providing hearty meals in homelessness shelters, food redistributed by FareShare Cymru is used by charities in a variety of ways. It enables these groups to bring people together and continue offering their essential support services.

To help address the growing issue of food waste while simultaneously helping communities and people in need, the ‘Surplus with Purpose Cymru’ fund was launched as a transformative initiative. They recognise that the impact of

rising costs has made it harder for Welsh food businesses of all sizes to operate. This fund supports Welsh producers, growers and manufacturers of all sizes to contribute their surplus, edible goods without incurring additional costs. The fund is designed to make it 100% cost-free for food businesses to do good with their surplus. For growers and farmers specifically, the SWP fund can cover the harvesting, labour, storage, packaging and transportation costs of surplus produce, making it easier to make a difference.

An estimated two million of the 3.6 million tonnes of wasted food in the Welsh food industry every year is deemed still fit for consumption. FareShare Cymru is committed to ensuring that discarding good, nutritious food is never more economical than donating it to those in need.

In order to keep supporting the work of local community groups and charities across Wales, they want to work with the food industry to make use of their surplus food. n To learn more, contact them today on 02920 362111, email swp@fareshare. cymru, or visit www. fareshare.cymru/ surplus-with-purpose

Respect the water

As the weather heats up the temptation to take a dip increases – but Water Safety Wales are stressing the importance of putting safety first…

People of all ages in Wales are being encouraged to learn key safety tips to help young people stay safe around the sea, rivers and other open water.

The call from Water Safety Wales comes as statistics showed a rise in accidental drowning deaths involving people aged under 20 for a second year running.

Water Safety Wales – a collaboration of organisations striving to reduce drowning in Wales – has issued four simple lifesaving tips to help young people stay safe when visiting open water:

Stop and think: Is it a safe place to swim? Are there hazards beneath the water? Are there hidden currents or fast-flowing water? How deep is it and can you get out easily?

Stay together: Always go with someone else Float: If you get into trouble in the water, float to live until you feel calm

Call 999 or 112: If you see someone else in trouble in the water

Seven people under 20 died in accidental water-related fatalities in Wales in 2023 – the highest number since

comparable data became available from the National Water Safety Forum’s Water Incident Database (WAID) in 2015.

In total, there were 28 deaths in Wales from accidental waterrelated fatalities in 2023 across inland and coastal locations, compared with 22 the previous year.

The accidental deaths form part of the 55 total water-related fatalities in Wales for 2023, an increase of seven from the previous year and the first overall increase in Wales in five years.

Across the UK there were 236 accidental water-related fatalities last year – an increase of ten from the previous year.

“Everyone connected to Water Safety Wales was deeply saddened to hear of the tragic incidents involving young people losing their lives in open water in Wales last year,” said Chris Cousens, Chair of Water Safety Wales.

“We believe that one drowning is one too many and the impact of losing a young person to drowning cannot be underestimated. People of all ages should learn and remember these

four key safety tips for children and young people and adults should talk to their youngsters about them.

“More young people will be visiting the sea, rivers, reservoirs, lakes and other open water locations as weather improves and schools break for summer holidays. The water is still cold enough to trigger cold water shock, the body’s natural reaction to cold water which can cause panic and gasping. “If you get into trouble in the water, resist the natural instinct to panic and Float to Live. Lean back and use your arms and legs to help you float on your back, then get control of your breathing before calling for help or swimming to safety. If you see someone else in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112. If you are at the coast, ask for the coastguard, if you are inland, ask for the fire service.

“Sea, rivers, lakes and other open water can look calm and inviting, but open water can be very different from a swimming pool. The water is usually moving and waves, currents and flow can make swimming difficult. It is important you know the depth of the water and what may be under the surface.”

The fresh data comes amid the news that, thanks to funding from the Welsh Government, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents will be overseeing the secretariat of

Water Safety Wales and the management of specific agreed projects such as in education, signage and local authority engagement.

“Water is a fundamental part of our lives in Wales,” said Huw Irranca-Davies, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs. “However, with this beauty and bounty comes a firm responsibility: to do our utmost to ensure that our waters are safe for everyone.

“There are still too many water-related incidents and fatalities occurring. This is where our efforts toward water safety gain importance, and why the work being done by Water Safety Wales and, now with the support of the newfound partnership with RoSPA, is so crucial.

“Safety around water is paramount. The rise in drowning incidents among young people in Wales is a stark reminder that vigilance and education are crucial. Together, we can save lives and let’s ensure that every child knows how to stay safe by open water this summer.” n

On Halkyn Mountain

Sonia Goulding climbs Halkyn Mountain, and discovers a history as rich as the landscape…

With the Clwydian Hills in the distance before us, their blue and violet outline just breaking the soft grey of an overcast sky, we walked among quietly grazing sheep, engrossed in trying out our newly acquired knowledge and identification skills from renowned butterfly and wildlife expert Jan Miller. She had just delivered a talk, ‘The Beginners Guide to the Wildflowers of Halkyn Mountain’, in the village hall, guiding us through some of the flower families to be found on the mountain, explaining the common characteristics of their composition in terms of leaf, stem and flower structure, and their importance as nectar sources or larval food for different species of butterflies and moths.

So, here we were with our knowledgeable walk leaders, Ieuan ap Siôn and Colin Roberts, eager to see what we might discover in this curious post-industrial landscape of

abandoned mine shafts, lime kilns and old quarry outcrops. The thin, nutrient-poor soils of the common lie over varying types of rock and support a surprisingly wide range of different plants. Wild herbs such as thyme, betony and marjoram can be found growing in areas of limestone, whereas the gorse and heather which proliferate here grow on the more acidic chert and sandstone soils. Notably, the county flower of Flintshire, the bell heather, thrives in this habitat. There are also specialists, such as the spring sandwort, also known as leadwort, which have adapted to grow on lead contaminated soils that other plants cannot tolerate. Grazing has also played its part in shaping the landscape over the centuries, but with the dwindling numbers of sheep out on the common, local conservationists have been encouraged by an increase in the numbers of wildflowers now growing here.

WILD HERBS SUCH AS THYME, BETONY AND MARJORAM CAN BE FOUND GROWING IN AREAS OF LIMESTONE, WHEREAS THE GORSE AND HEATHER WHICH PROLIFERATE HERE GROW ON THE MORE ACIDIC CHERT AND SANDSTONE SOILS

As an aside, a story goes that the village of Cadole was so named by tin miners from the Cornish town of Mousehole, who were brought to the district for their mining knowledge and expertise. They supposedly coined the name as a humorous, or perhaps wistful, nod to the home they’d left behind. A lode (vein of metal ore) in the tunnels is still called the ‘Cathole lode’. By the mid-1930s, the output of lead from these mines reached over 21,000 tonnes, making it one of the largest lead producing areas in Britain. Though the mines fell silent in 1987, the abandoned workings and a deep lake discovered during the construction of the tunnel are today the haunt of cavers and divers.

Lead mining in the area was probably begun in the Bronze age and developed by the Romans, who transported the ore to Pentre (Pentre ffwrn dân – Village of the flaming furnace) in Flint for smelting and processing, before shipping it from the Dee to Chester and beyond. Ingots of lead, known as ‘lead pigs’ and embossed with the name of the local tribe, Deceangli, have been found in the area. After the departure of the Romans in around 440 AD, very little mining appears to have taken place in the area until it was taken up again in medieval times. Output increased dramatically in the early 18th Century with the introduction of gunpowder to extract the ore in greater quantities, although flooding was a constant problem. In the 19th Century Cornish engines were brought in to pump out the water, with the long-term solution eventually being provided by the construction of the 10-mile Milwr Tunnel running from Cadole to Bagillt, facilitating the drainage of around 60 miles of tunnels and passages.

Over the past 300 years, quarrying has also played a major role in the economy of the local area. Although originally carried out by farmers and commoners working by hand using crowbars, hammers and wedges, demand for this high-quality rock increased and larger quarries eventually became established, such as the massive Pant-y-Pwll Dŵr that operates today, its impressive quarry faces looming vast and grey in the landscape.

A word of caution: Take care near old mine workings. Halkyn Common is covered with mine shafts in a variety of stages of repair. Many of these shafts are deep and vertical. Please report any re-opened shafts to the landowner, Grosvenor Estate. The Estate Manager, Eaton Estate Office, Eccleston, Chester CH4 9ET Tel: 01244 684400

People have lived and worked on and around Halkyn Mountain for centuries, farming the land, grazing their animals and exploiting its riches, and though it remains a working environment, it is nowadays also a place of leisure and relaxation. With breath-taking views across the expanse of the Dee Estuary on one hand and the rolling hills of the Clwydian range on the other, this intriguing landscape is a compelling and fascinating mix of wild, natural beauty and industrial toil, a place where the past is never too far away. n

Every little helps

A little bit of kindness has gone a very long way on the Llŷn Peninsula…

Nestled away amongst the beautiful coastline and countryside of the Llŷn Peninsula is a unique charity shop that has raised over £53,000 for North Wales’ only children’s hospice.

39. In their honour we did the Memory Walk in London, but the money we raised seemed to be going so far away and we wanted also to help local causes.

Run by primary school teaching assistant and lollipop lady, Mair Jones at her home in the shadows of Garn Fadryn, is Cwt Gobaith, a shop of pre-loved treasures run from a small shed, or Cwt in Welsh.

The unique little shop, which benefits Tŷ Gobaith in the Conwy Valley, was conceived during the pandemic period when Mair mentioned to her husband, Arthur that she would like a shed. Days later, Arthur, a builder by trade, surprised her with a new shed on their driveway.

Mair explains how she came to learn of the hospice and what inspired her to begin direct fundraising: “I sadly lost my mother and brother in the same year, aged just 60 and

“I was introduced to Tŷ Gobaith’s work in about 2006 and since then have held many fundraising days at our home for tea and cakes. 120 people came on one day, but then the Covid pandemic hit and brought a stop to those gatherings.”

It was here in 2021 that Mair opened Cwt Gobaith with some donated homewares and clothes for people to buy out in the fresh air, socially distanced and with an honesty box for payment.

The idea grew quickly with Mair soon receiving bags and bags of donations to sell and the shop becoming a real hit in the rural community with locals and visitors alike.

“Without the community I couldn’t do it,” explained Mair. “People are taking pride in it and enjoy helping such a worthy cause. We have had great support and even visits from a bus of school children and Merched Y Wawr.

“Clothes and children’s toys are the best selling items. Last Christmas we handmade 340 wreaths which all sold.” In total over the years, the Jones family’s efforts for good causes have raised over £100,000 for several charities – but this is not their only brilliant achievement.

In 2023 Mair was honoured with investiture into the Gorsedd of Bards at the National Eisteddfod in Boduan and also invited for tea at Buckingham Palace just three days before King Charles’ coronation.

“I cried when I received the letters from the Palace and Gorsedd,” said Mair. “Going to Buckingham Palace was wonderful but entering the Gorsedd at an Eisteddfod on the Llyn was very special and a true honour.”

The Cwt has become so popular that in fine weather, Mair and Arthur fill rails and tables of clothes outside too alongside the Aladdin’s cave of homewares and toys.

Gwynedd area fundraiser for Tŷ Gobaith, Jenny Roberts, said: “Cwt Gobaith is an inspirational idea and is so well supported. We can’t thank Mair and the community enough for their efforts. Every penny raised will help us to continue on our mission of reaching every local family and child in need of care, respite and support.” n

Hope House Children’s Hospices provide specialist nursing care and support to more than 750 children, and their families, who live in Shropshire, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales. They have two hospices – Hope House in Oswestry and Tŷ Gobaith in Conwy. These dedicated teams support families from diagnosis, throughout the lifetime of their child and beyond. They are here for every mum, dad, brother and sister.

At the end of a child’s life they are available to make sure their final moments are as comfortable as possible, and that their family says goodbye in their own way and in their own time.

They are also available to comfort families and offer bereavement support, whether the hospice has cared for their child during their illness, or they have turned to the charity after their child’s sudden death through any circumstances at all.

It costs £7.5 million every year to run these services. Approximately two month’s income comes from statutory sources – but for the other 10 months of the year the hospices are dependent on public support.

You can find Cwt Gobaith at Gwelfor, just outside Llaniestyn, LL53 8PS.

Food for thought

My folks set Paysanne up in 1988. They were both great Francophiles and would shut the restaurant for a few weeks annually so they could drive down to France and seek out obscure vineyards to buy wine and seek inspiration for new dishes.

They retired in 2003 and have lived in the Languedoc ever since. They still go hunting for wines for the Paysanne carte des vins – a gruelling task of repeatedly sampling glass after glass of the stuff. Tough work, but they somehow manage to rise to the occasion.

It’s great to have ‘agents’ living in France, sampling the

POULET AU XÉRÈS (Serves 2)

Ingredients

200 mls Chicken stock

50mls sherry

2 large free range chicken breasts (skin on)

Dash rapeseed oil

Salt and pepper

Add the sherry to the chicken stock in a shallow pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer, then add the chicken breasts. Add some hot water if there isn’t enough stock to cover the chicken. Place the lid on the pan and leave to poach gently for seven minutes.

Remove the chicken and leave to dry on some kitchen towel. Increase the heat in the pan to reduce the stock by half. This will be your sauce.

food and wine to keep us up to date on the latest French trends. The worst thing about it is that I have to constantly put up with being sent photos of mouth-watering food and glasses of chilled rose set against bright azure skies, especially when we’re suffering through a dismal, damp spring and a non-existent summer. “Having a siesta. It’s 39˚C outside so we’re chilling out with a local Chardonnay.” It really is not fair!

I thought I’d share Mum’s latest discovery. A French friend showed her how to make the perfect chicken breast supper and since then, she refuses to cook chicken any other way. Revolutionary stuff, but still very simple to make…

In a frying pan, heat a glug of rapeseed oil until you hear sizzling. Place the chicken breast into the pan, skin-side down. After about two minutes, turn the chicken over. You want the skin to be nice and crispy. After another two minutes, turn it over again and give the skin another minute of crisping up, and it’s done.

You can serve it with whatever you like. Mum cooked up some rice and vegetables to accompany it, finished off with the reduced sherry sauce. And then sent me photos of them eating alfresco with some chilled Rose Grenache under the bright French sunshine. The swine.

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk

IMPORTANT EVENT BRINGS NORTH WALES FARMING INTO FOCUS

Welsh farming “needs to refocus” on a more sustainable approach to ensure that the industry grows and flourishes over the coming years.

That’s the message from a major event in North Wales recently, which brought people together from all over the country to discuss the future of Welsh farming.

Conwy-based law firm Lanyon Bowdler was a sponsor of Da Byw – the Sustainable Livestock Farming Conference, and Edward Nutting, head of the firm’s North Wales office, said it was an inspiring event.

“Lanyon Bowdler is totally committed to supporting the farming industry whenever we can,” he said. “We have a large farming client-base and are only too aware of the issues affecting the sector. Da Byw – the Sustainable Livestock Farming Conference has been a hugely successful event over the last few years and we were delighted to be involved again this year as a sponsor. It was an important date for everyone connected with farming and we were proud to be part of it.”

The annual event, which attracted hundreds of attendees across both days, featured several guest speakers, workshops and demonstrations, a farm walk and a discussion involving farming policy makers chaired by former Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

The conference was organised by Harry and Davina Fetherstonhaugh in conjunction with the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and took place at Coed Coch – the family home of Harry and Davina and their sons Archie and Ivor.

“Our focus on regenerative farming felt particularly apt this year with the Welsh Government in the process of writing its Sustainable Farming Scheme,” commented Davina. “All the policy makers were there so it was a good opportunity for farmers to ask them about what was going to happen and how it would be rolled out. The first morning centred on our speakers, Siobhan Griffin, John Gilliland and Heather Wildman, talking about regenerative farming and how to make it profitable.

“We have a mantra of People, Profits, Planet, so this part of the day had a focus on successful farming, profitable farming, environmentally-friendly farming, mental health in farming communities and the social and cultural side of farming. The afternoon was more practical with workshops and demonstrations and then policy makers got the chance in a discussion led by Amber Rudd to say how they were going to help farmers.

“Farming in Wales is in a precarious position, caused by pressures from financial, social and environmental factors. But it must be realised that farmers can make a positive difference, combating climate change, producing quality food, building healthy communities and allowing the urban population to enjoy and understand nature and rural cultures. However, to achieve this, farming as an industry needs to refocus.

“The Welsh Government has promised to support farmers on this journey with its Sustainable Farming Scheme. It is imperative that they get it right and it is farmers who are best placed to guide them.

“We were very grateful that Lanyon Bowdler joined us as a sponsor - the firm has been a big help to us as a farm business, and we were delighted to have its support for this important event too.” n

EDUCATION NEWS

Awards success for remarkable St David’s pupil

A Llandudno schoolboy born an extremely rare genetic condition has been awarded the prestigious Lexden Prize for Remarkable Sixth Former, beating dozens of entries from other schools from across the country. Thomas Pearce’s journey thus far, both academically and personally, epitomizes resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Despite facing numerous medical challenges, the St David’s College pupil has soared academically, achieving outstanding results in his GCSEs, including four grade 9s, five A*s, one A, and a distinction in Additional Maths, despite missing months of school. The 17-year-old has undergone 43 surgeries over the years and says this is why he’s determined to go and study medicine and become a doctor himself. Thomas was born with Pfeiffer Syndrome, which affects around one in 100,000 people. “I guess that this would either put me off or inspire me and I won’t ever let my medical situation define me,” said Thomas. Headmaster of St David’s College, Mr Andrew Russell, said of Thomas: “What sets Thomas apart, beyond his scholastic and musical prowess, is his extraordinary journey. Born with a rare condition that has necessitated dozens of facial and cranial surgeries, he has shown an unparalleled strength of character. Thomas is determined to become a surgeon himself and has already delivered a presentation to hundreds of surgeons in Liverpool.” Thomas, who is also a keen kickboxer and has a black belt in karate, will be going to the House of Lords later in the year to receive the award.

After a thrilling day of cricket, in which both sides demonstrated great talent and sportsmanship, the captains of both teams exchanged commemorative gifts to mark the occasion. needs to go down during the night to allow us deep sleep where the body regenerates cells and fights illness. So what’s different about sleeping under a wool duvet? Put simply, wool regulates body temperature. It allows our temperature to cool down during the night leading to peaceful sleep. It also wicks away moisture from the body reducing sweating, and is dust mite resistant and anti bacterial – making it ideal for bedding. Baavet has reinvented the blanket and encased the wool in high quality cotton so it’s not itchy, heavy or old fashioned. www.baavet.co.uk

Why do I get Flashes and Floaters and what should I do?

The vitreous gel inside the eye changes in consistency as we get older and most people note grey floaters in their vision often from their 20’s. This occurs because solid filaments of gel move around in a more liquid matrix and, in bright lighting conditions, cast shadows back on the retina. These floaters are rarely concerning, and the brain is very adept at filtering this ‘junk information’ so that we don’t see them all the time. As we get older, the gel changes further in consistency and starts to separate away from the retina in a process known as posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Patients frequently report a grey circle in their vision or a ‘spiders web’ appearing. This is sometimes accompanied by flashes of light which represents traction from the gel on the retina. This can be alarming for patients and if it happens acutely, you should probably have this looked at. If there is a further acute onset of black floaters, this may be a retinal tear. This occurs when the gel is too firmly adherent to the peripheral retina and pulls on it causing a tear to form. This can lead to a retinal detachment and should be seen urgently for treatment with either laser or cryotherapy to weld the retina shut to prevent detachment. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and need advice please contact the North Wales Eye Specialist Centre. northwaleseyespecialist.co.uk

How to deal with your year of firsts

The first year, after someone close to you dies, is often one of the most challenging. Each milestone – birthdays, anniversaries and holidays can bring a fresh wave of grief and pain. These ‘firsts’ are reminders of the void that has been left by their absence. Navigating these moments is crucial for healing and to help you find a new normal, remember, it’s okay to grieve, and it’s also okay to find moments of joy and peace. If you need support, don’t hesitate to reach out to those around you or seek professional help. You’re not alone. Here are our tips and practical advice to help you through your Year of Firsts!

Acknowledge your emotions

Give yourself permission to grieve. Understanding that it is ok to feel sad, angry or numb and that these emotions are a natural part of the grieving process.

Be honest with yourself. Recognise that these milestones will be difficult.

Plan Ahead

Anticipate Triggers. If you identify dates such as a birthday or anniversary that may be particularly challenging beforehand, it will help.

You should then try to create a plan. You can decide in advance what you’d like to do on these dates, such as celebrate, memorialise or simply get through the day.

Find Support

Lean on Family or Friends. Share your feelings with those close to you, and let them know how they can support you during these difficult times.

Join a Support Group.

Consider joining a bereavement support group where you can connect with others whom are experiencing similar losses.

Take Care of Yourself

Practice Self-Care. You should prioritise activities that nurture your physical and emotional wellbeing. Ensure you eat well, exercise (a short stroll along the prom helps) and ensure you get enough rest.

You should also be gentle with yourself. Healing takes time and it’s ok to have up and down days.

Seek professional help

Consider counselling. If you are struggling to cope then a bereavement counsellor may be able to provide support and coping strategies to help manage your grief.

Other resources. Online forums, books and workshops can provide additional support within the community. There are some specific organisations that are tailored to help.

Create Memories and Traditions

Establishing new traditions. Whether lighting a candle, visiting a special place or cooking their favourite meal, you may find establishing a new tradition with family or friends helpful.

Gather Mementos. Collecting photos, letters and other keepsakes will help to remind you of the person that has died. Spend time reminiscing and sharing stories with others, which will bring comfort. n
