Large or small, ledge or yard, your garden can be a mosaic in a wider network of natural havens linking urban green spaces with nature reserves and the countryside.
Hedgehogs, bats, sparrows, song thrushes and stag beetles are all declining species in the UK, but if we manage our gardens to benefit wildlife, these creatures and many more will find refuge. It’s not hard to help. Consider a whole host of wild ideas and features – or just pick one and then sit back, enjoy the view and see who visits!
Why have a plain, ugly fence when a green, living boundary can bring the riches of flowers, scent, berries, rich autumn colours and wildlife? Ever thought about which heavenlyscented plants provide night time nectar for moths? Or digging a pond? If you introduce a water feature, not for fish but for newts, dragonflies and pond skaters, you’ll also be providing water for birds. Plant up the edges with the golden blooms of marsh marigolds and the lush spikes of purple loosestrife and you’ll have nectar stations for insects and beauty to dwell on.
Together, our gardens are a vast living landscape. With an estimated 24 million gardens in the UK, the way they are cared for can make a big difference to the natural world. n
There is so much you can do in your garden for wildlife – take a peek at some of our actions and how to guides. Enjoy! northwaleswildlifetrust.org. uk/wildlife-gardening
North Wales boasts some of the best attractions in Europe. We unveil some of the best days out to be had this Easter…
If you are looking to get out and about this Easter or, indeed, at any time during the spring and summer months, then look no further as we have some fabulous ideas for you and your family.
You could start your North Wales adventure by taking your family on the journey of a lifetime on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which has been described as one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world. Trains depart from Llanberis Station and begin their climb up Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa, a journey experienced by millions of travellers since 1896. With stunning scenery and awe-inspiring views, it’s all part of a great day out for you and your family in North Wales.
During March and April trains will run daily to Clogwyn Station, three quarters the distance up Snowdon, where the open mountainside station offers spectacular views to the valleys below. From May to the end of October the destination is Hafod Eryri on the summit of Snowdon, where on clear days the views can stretch as far as Ireland. From here, you can venture up to the cairn 1085m above sea level.
There are two services on offer, the Traditional Diesel Service and Heritage Steam Experience, both of which offer a truly memorable experience. Advance booking is highly recommended, especially during busy periods such as spells of fine weather and school holidays. There’s an Early Bird discount available on the 9am service.
Sticking with the train theme, bookings for both Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway services between late March and early November are now open. While most of the experiences will be familiar to those who visited last year, they will be running a new journey option in 2024 called ‘The Victorian’. This Victorian train service gives you a vintage Ffestiniog experience, riding in some of the beautifully preserved heritage carriages in the original ornate livery of the Victorian era, hauled by a traditional Ffestiniog locomotive. ‘The Victorian’ experience will run on select days throughout April and May, with tickets available to buy on their website.
However, if you’d rather that your legs took the strain of your scenic tour, look no further than Snowdonia Bikes. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a first-timer, there’s no better way to explore the majestic landscape of Eryri than by e-bike.
They have routes catering to all abilities, with the historic Conwy Valley town of Llanrwst as your starting point. Explore the enchanting Gwydir forest, stopping at waterfalls and lakes to take it all in. Climb up high to get views of Eryri’s mountains, all without breaking into a sweat.
Meanwhile, experienced mountain bikers can come and tackle some of North Wales’ finest single-track. ‘Gwydir Mawr’ is 20km of exhilarating red-graded trail with Betws-y-Coed
providing a brilliant halfway stop. Snowdonia Bikes have both hard-tail and full-suspension bikes and can cater for groups of up to 12.
If you a looking for a more traditional way to entertain the kids this Easter then hop along to Greenfield Valley. Detective HC Bunny is looking for the ingredients to make Hot Cross Buns, yet someone has stolen one. What is missing? Who are the suspects? And can you find who actually did it?
This special Easter hunt takes you across the site, meeting different animals as you go. And if you find the culprit you’ll receive a chocolately treat! Greenfield Valley’s Easter trail will be available each day from Friday 29th March to Monday 1st April, and costs £3.00 per trail on top of the admission ticket, which includes a map with clues, recipe and chocolate prize.
If you are going to spend Easter at home this year, fear not as The Woodworks Garden Centre has everything you need to get your garden looking its best this springtime. The Mill showroom is stocked with the broadest range of Zest timber garden products in the UK, including benches, seating, dining sets, arches and arbours, and a variety of planters and grow your own products.
All Zest furniture and decorative products come flat packed (build instructions included and animated assembly available online) for ease of transportation, while the beautiful outdoor plant area features an abundance of hardy plants including perennials, a full range of ornamental and fruit trees, as well as soft fruit, shrubs, hedging and roses.
Pop into the Garden Emporium to keep on top of garden maintenance, The Woodworks has everything you need to keep your garden tidy, from leaf collectors, rakes and lawn feed, to pruners, bulb planters, flowering and “Grow Your Own” seeds.
And if you are planning your days out for April already, then look no further than Wonderwool Wales – the largest, award winning, wool and natural fibre event in Wales, and one of the largest in the UK.
The 18th show will be held at the Royal Welsh Show Ground, Builth Wells, on 27th & 28th April this year and will be bursting with beautiful hand-dyed yarns, fleece, fibre, equipment and much more from 220 exhibitors, everything that those who knit, crochet, felt, weave, spin or dye could need.
The Street Food area will be serving quality, tasty offerings throughout both days, while various breeds of sheep, along with Angora rabbits and Angora goats – all of whom produce wool and fibre which will be on sale at the weekend – will be on display.
There will be nine different workshops on both Saturday and Sunday, covering Drop spindle spinning, Drum carding, Wet Felting, Needle Felting, Botanical dyeing, Macrame, Backstrap weaving and Needle-woven tapestry. Weekend tickets are £22, and there are discounted tickets for coach parties of 12 or more. n

Bethany Birch visits Ruthin, and discovers a vibrant modern town that honours it’s rich heritage…
Nestled amidst the twisting Clwydian hills of North East Wales lies Ruthin, a small town bursting with Welsh history and modern comforts. This charming market town, situated in Denbighshire, in the south of the Vale of Clwyd, is celebrated for its rich heritage, vibrant community, and breathtaking scenery.
Ruthin’s story dates back centuries, with its roots firmly planted in Welsh history. Its crowning jewel is the medieval Ruthin Castle (now Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa), a testament to the town’s storied past. Built in the 13th Century by Edward I of England, the castle symbolises Ruthin’s resilience and endurance through the ages.
Wandering through the town’s historic streets, visitors are transported back in time, with centuries-old buildings whispering tales of days gone by. From the timber-framed Nantclwyd y Dre, Wales’s oldest townhouse, to the picturesque St Peter’s Square, Ruthin exudes an old-world charm that captivates all who visit.
Explore the beauty of the Collegiate and Parochial Church of St Peter, the Anglican parish church of Ruthin. This religious site is a Grade I listed building and is a greater church of the Diocese of St Asaph. Or, marvel at Derwen Churchyard Cross – this ornate medieval preaching cross is amongst the best preserved in this part of Wales.
Purchase a ticket for Ruthin Gaol, the only purpose-built Pentonville-style prison open to the public as a heritage
attraction. Discover Victorian prison life and learn about daily routines, meals, work, and punishments. Explore punishment, ‘dark,’ and condemned cells, and hear tales of infamous inmates, including the Welsh Houdini and William Hughes, the last man hanged there.
Or step back in time and discover over 500 years of history at Nantclwyd y Dre, a Grade I listed house in Ruthin before relaxing in the luscious Lord’s Garden. Explore its seven ages, from medieval origins to the 20th Century, and learn about the lives of its residents. From a weaver’s hall house in 1435 to a 17th Century lawyer’s townhouse and a Victorian school for girls, uncover the building’s fascinating evolution.
Despite its rich history, Ruthin is far from stuck in the past. The town seamlessly blends its heritage with modern comforts, offering residents and visitors alike a plethora of amenities and attractions. The bustling market, held weekly,
showcases the best of fresh produce, local delicacies and artisanal crafts, while the Ruthin Craft Centre celebrates contemporary creativity and craftsmanship. The town’s streets are also lined with independent shops, cafés and restaurants, making it a delightful place to explore.
Events and festivals throughout the year bring the community together in celebration of Ruthin’s heritage and culture. From the lively Ruthin Festival to the traditional Ruthin Carnival, there’s always something happening in this vibrant town.
You’ll find plenty of arts and crafts fairs to fill your diary throughout the year. As well as Ruthin’s annual flower show which showcases the best of Ruthin’s horticultural talent, featuring stunning floral displays, garden competitions, plant sales and gardening workshops.
If you want to venture further afield then Ruthin’s advantageous location places it within easy reach of several notable destinations. To the southeast lies the charming town of Llangollen, renowned for its scenic canal, historic steam railway and cultural landmarks. Just a short drive northeast brings travellers to Denbigh, another historic market town boasting attractions such as Denbigh Castle, Denbigh Town Walls and the medieval St. Hilary’s Chapel.
Nature lovers will find solace in Loggerheads Country Park, located nearby, where wooded valleys, riverside paths, and limestone cliffs await exploration. For those craving grandeur and adventure, Snowdonia National Park beckons to the west, offering rugged mountains, sparkling lakes, and picturesque villages, as well as challenging hikes up iconic peaks.
Surrounded by the stunning Clwydian Range, Ruthin is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails such as the popular Moel Famau and Leete Path Circular trails, meander through lush valleys and rolling hills, offering breathtaking views at every turn. Adventure awaits around every corner, with plenty of nearby adventure attractions and activities

populating the rural Welsh countryside to keep the whole family entertained.
What truly sets Ruthin apart is its sense of community and warm North Walian hospitality. Dogs and coffee are the two main ingredients at Dudley & George’s, making for a unique place to stop and recharge – for both yourself and your four legged friend!
Dudley & George’s is more than a dog store – it is a fabulous café for humans too!
Located in the heart of Llandudno, the team are always careful to use local products in all of their dishes wherever possible –and they ensure that they source more exotic ingredients, such as avocado, from local suppliers.
Founder Jason Pinnick followed his dream and opened this unique store just over two years ago – on Valentines Day 2022 in fact – and brought his love of dogs and coffee together.
Here he answers some of Dudley & George’s most frequently asked questions:
Are you a vegan café?
No, but all our ‘meat’ is! And almost every dish can be ordered vegan – we also use plant butter in all of our cakes, and sandwiches
Do you make everything to order?
Absolutely, everything is made fresh, and all cakes are homemade on site. If we add anything to our range from a supplier we will highlight this as we want to also celebrate local growers, bakers and producers.
What on earth are Rascals ?
They are our most popular baked treat, somewhere between and scone and a cake, packed full of juicy fruit and citrus peel. I grew up baking these back home in Yorkshire and it is a bit of a family obsession ... Now it’s a customer obsession! I bake them fresh every morning and they usually sell out by afternoon. The sticky cinnamon version is new for spring and is going down well.
Aren’t you just a dog shop?
No way! We are so much more than a dog shop, but dogs and coffee are our two main passions so they are intertwined and integral to our unique store. n
Are you dreaming of a country wedding?
"EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ORDINARY LIFE, LOVE GIVES US A FAIRY TALE"
It was an age when a brave king slayed a giant on Yr Wyddfa, and when chivalrous knights sat at a round table in the fabled Arthurian court of Camelot. But was the King Arthur at the centre of this legend a real person or a character made up by writers centuries after his lifetime?
The ingredients of this story about a British king able to defeat a giant and Anglo-Saxon invaders has an enduring appeal. From some accounts we’re told that Knights of the Round Table gathered at Camelot, conjuring up images of godly men ready to fight off pagan hordes. Yet these, and other aspects of Arthur’s picaresque life, were embellishments at best – if not complete inventions.
Considering the extensive mythology, surprisingly little is known about Arthur, lending him an air of romance and mystery. Evidence from chronicles and poems dating back nearly a thousand years or more tell of a warrior born in the 5th Century who later married Guinevere. One of several disputed claims is that Arthur was really Owain Ddantgwyn who ruled Rhôs and Gwynedd, and son of Uther Pendragon (terrible head dragon).
Fanciful elements were added by various writers, helping to shape the story we’re familiar with today. As a young man Arthur managed a feat that no others had: to pull out the sword Excalibur held fast in a rock. Years later when dying at the Battle of Camlann he told the knight Griflet to throw the sword into a lake where it’s then taken by a hand rising out of the water.
The ingredients of this story about a British king able to defeat a giant and Anglo-Saxon invaders has an enduring appeal
But what of the magical island of Avalon where Excalibur was forged, the magician Merlin buried – and where the mortally wounded Arthur was taken in the hope of being saved? Some think that Glastonbury Tor in Somerset, once surrounded by marshland, is the location, while Bardsey Island off the Llŷn Peninsula has also been proposed. Bardsey had inhabitants even in Neolithic times (the New Stone Age) and in the 5th Century persecuted Christians would seek refuge there at the island’s monastery.
damaged knee. Later breaking the pact, Huail spotted Arthur dancing and made the fatal mistake of teasing him with the comment: “This dancing were all right if it were not for the knee.” Arthur’s merciless revenge was to cut off his head on the stone now known as Maen Huail.

On the trail of King Arthur we can head up Yr Wyddfa by foot or train. At the summit visitors clamber up a large pile of stones to say they’ve reached the very top of this famous mountain. A queue often forms thanks to the peak’s popularity, yet many are unaware that beneath them is supposedly where the giant Rhitta Gawr was buried by Arthur’s men after he killed it.
Rocks play a big part in Arthurian folklore. Over at Ruthin a boulder can be found next to Exmewe Hall in St Peter’s Square. This unremarkable stone supposedly has a grisly history from a deadly rivalry between Arthur and Huail, brother of the historian Gildas. Arthur’s knee was injured when he fought Huail over a mistress. The pair then agreed a truce on the grounds that Huail would refrain from mentioning Arthur’s
We next go to Loggerheads where a stone arch marks the boundary of Denbigh and Flint and a plaque tells us that below it lies the stone “Carreg Carn March Arthur”. The stone is said to bear a hoofprint from Arthur’s horse Llamrei when it leapt off the hill Moel Famau. Making this yarn even more spectacular is that the horse was dragging a water monster at the time.
A visitor to Llyn Padarn by Llanberis cannot miss another reminder of Arthur. Here a 20ft high steel sculpture erected in 2017 immortalises the Excalibur sword in a car park. It was commissioned as part of the Year of Legends campaign to “create new Welsh legends, immerse visitors in our epic story, and make new legendary experiences.”
Historians can debate whether Owain Ddantgwyn was Arthur, or if he was even a real historical figure. A lack of definitive evidence leaves it open to interpretation for the foreseeable future. What we do know is that many kings and tribes fought battles in 5th Century Britain when the Romans withdrew from our island and Anglo-Saxon invaders forced the previous Britons back to strongholds in Wales and Cornwall.
North Wales is a land of legends and myths, from dragons in the mountain of Dinas Emrys to the Afranc water monster in the River Conwy. King Arthur has become so closely associated with this ancient domain that his mythology will surely live on, and who doesn’t love a heroic tale – regardless of its accuracy? n

400,000 tonnes of food is wasted in Wales annually, with a significant portion still suitable for consumption. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of the Welsh population are facing food poverty. By saving just 1% of the annual wastage, this surplus could yield over 9 million meals – the equivalent of 3 meals for every person in Wales.
FareShare Cymru, established in 2010, repurposes surplus food by redistributing it to local charities and community groups; turning a significant environmental issue into a positive social solution. Made up of a team of amazing staff and volunteers, surplus food is picked, packed, and driven across North Wales. The groups they work with then further distribute surplus through various schemes including collection points, community kitchen projects, pantries and cooking classes. One of the projects supported by both FareShare Cymru and FareShare Merseyside is ‘Y Pantri’, a project that offers a forward-thinking, innovative approach to food redistribution.
Established by St Giles Cymru in 2023, Y Pantri is situated in Colwyn Bay and is Wales’s first ‘social supermarket’ service. This service was set up in response to the ever-growing cost-of-living crisis, as an attempt to lift members of the local community out of poverty indefinitely. It currently supports over 75 people, with 121 trained experts on hand to offer advice and referrals to service users.
For £3.50 a week, Y Pantri offers members of the community a choice of ten items, colour-coded in terms of retail pricing. The selection is vast, some of which have been provided by FareShare, with there being something for everyone. The instore experience encourages confidence and independence amongst its users, ultimately helping them to get back on their feet with a sense of control over their situation.
Y Pantri was established by St Giles Cymru, which allows the facility to go beyond food distribution, with the charity
providing additional services like offering advice and support via Wales’s peer advice network. Similarly, they work to support both people at risk of criminal exploitation and those who have been caught within the criminal justice system, offering support and aid in the rebuilding of their lives. Furthermore, a ‘wrap-around’ approach is taken regarding families, going beyond the surface-level issue of limited access to food for families and tackling other issues such as employment.
How FareShare works with Y Pantri Stacey Brady, Y Pantri’s co-ordinator, discussed the “really good relationship” between FareShare Cymru and St Giles. “We reached out to them when we knew Y Pantri would be opening in North Wales. The staff and volunteers do an amazing job. We now have four deliveries a week, which is important to us as a Pantri to be able to deliver the goods to our clientele. Without the help of FareShare, we wouldn’t be able to fulfil the needs surrounding food poverty in the area. Some of the goods we receive are expensive, and our local community wouldn’t be able to afford this, some foods they have never seen, or know what to do with. FareShare have opened opportunities for people to taste new and a different processes of cooking. They cater for vegan, vegetarian, glucose free etc, which is amazing.”
FareShare Cymru and our regional partners have made, and continue to make, a significant impact on projects like this. n

Based on Thomas Mann’s novella, Britten’s opera explores creativity, sexuality, ageing, obsession and the tension between reality and imagination.
The opera is directed by Olivia Fuchs and designed by Nicola Turner, both of whom worked on last year’s acclaimed WNO production of The Makropulos Affair. It includes aerial work and circus skills, blended with Britten’s evocative music to create an innovative version of the compelling tale.
“Death in Venice is a beautiful opera,” says Olivia. “On the face of it, the piece charts the inner struggle and the physical, as well as metaphorical, demise of a writer who has suppressed his sexuality in his search for creativity and beauty.”
NoFit State guest artistic director Firenza Guidi has plenty of experience of opera as she grew up in Milan where she was frequently taken to the world-renowned theatre La Scala. She believes the collaboration will bring a new understanding to Britten’s work.
“For me, circus is the best way to embody the kind of dichotomy in the story – the contradiction between flight and ground, between ethereal and carnal – it’s a vision, something that will evaporate in the next image.”
The collaboration is proving to be both innovative and exciting, says NFS artistic director Tom Rack.
“When we are creating story, we are painting pictures, we are creating images that are almost cinematic in scale that have
resonance, have theme, have meaning and have undercurrent in terms of the relationship between the characters...”
Director Olivia believes that movement is an inherent part of each character’s journey. She aims to explore the opera’s possibilities physically and visually, giving audiences a new experience of Death in Venice.
“I want the audience to leave feeling uplifted, inspired and moved, and for them to question how we can live more fully in the world, embracing both body and mind, ugliness and beauty, imagination and reality. We have such extraordinary potential as human beings to imagine and create new worlds...” n
Death in Venice will premiere at Wales Millennium Centre, before visiting Venue Cymru, Llandudno on Wednesday 13 March.

Formed in 2016 by Aled Phillips, Johns’ Boys initially came together for a Noson Lawen to celebrate the life and work of two conductors from the village of Rhosllannerchrugog, John Tudor Davies and John Glyn Williams. In 2019 they became the first Male Choir to win the prestigious “Choir of the World” competition at Llangollen International Eisteddfod (and only the third Male Choir to win it in the history of the competition). 2019 proved to be an incredible year for the choir as they were also victorious in the Choir of Wales of competition and the National Eisteddfod of Wales.
The choir has performed in many prestigious concert venues throughout Great Britain and regularly sings in the Principality Stadium for Welsh Rugby Union home international games. They have performed on the Last Night of the Proms and were heard on the Netflix blockbuster Stay Close.
Many new fans, however, will be more familiar with Johns’ Boys from their very recent exploits on Britain’s Got Talent. Performing Calum Scott’s ‘Biblical’, they entranced the judges with their virtuosic vocals, eliciting a standing ovation from both the judges and audience. Johns’ Boys received a resounding ‘Yes!’ from each judge, enabling them to progress to the live semi-finals. Their appearance in those semifinals brought further praise, with a certain Simon Cowell describing their performance as: “quite beautiful!” He went on to declare, “This was a moment. It was a brilliant song choice, and you are a brilliant choir. I loved it!”
Since the show the choir have been incredibly busy. They
held their first concert to their home crowd in the William Aston Hall which was sold out within hours and a second sell out night had to be put on. Even Callum Scott got in on the act and privately messaged the choir to congratulate them on what was a stunning performance of a stunning arrangement.
The choir recorded their first single ‘Biblical’ at the world famous Metropolis Studios in London. The single went straight to Number 1 in the iTunes classical charts, and recently released their first EP which is available on download in all major streams and purchase online at Amazon. They were then invited to appear as special guests in Royal Variety show which was the experience of a lifetime.
In 2024 the choir have a UK tour which sees them appear right across the land in some fantastic iconic venues such as Buxton Opera House, Leeds Opera House and Lichfield Cathedral. They have a number of concerts nearer to home in Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Hereford Theatre and Llandaff Cathedral.
Aled is regarded as one of Britain’s most successful and ambitious choral conductors. He has gained international and national acclaim from prestigious adjudicators and critics from all over the world. His extensive knowledge of choral repertoire, superb understanding of choral technique and sheer passion for choral singing has led to incredible success.
Johns’ Boys brings a groundbreaking, modern twist to the traditional Welsh Male Voice Choir. Enjoy breathtaking covers of Calum Scott’s Biblical and Harry Styles’ Falling plus modern twists on well known classics, like their stunning take on the famous Welsh hymn tune ‘Calon Lân’. n

The St Asaph Choral Society is going from strength to strength as it celebrates its 60th anniversary…
Established in 1964, the choral society has consistently drawn together people from across the community to make music, support local musicians and produce some memorable and wonderful performances. Such is the appreciation for choral music amongst the local community, many of the society’s loyal members returned post Covid-19, and their membership numbers are steadily increasing.
Following the lock- down period, the society were very fortunate that Trystan Lewis agreed to become their newest musical director, taking over the role from Graham Eccles. Graham, who was organist and Master of choristers at St Asaph cathedral from 1988-2003, has been a pivotal part in the history of the St Asaph Choral Society for over 15 years and remains as their accompanist.
Trystan brings to the choir his vast musical experience and mastery of choral conducting which began as musical director for Maelgwyn male voice choir when he was just 22 years of age. Renowned for his enthusiasm and the promotion of choral works, Trystan continues a long line of choir masters at St Asaph choral society. Each musical director over the last 60 years has brought their own style and personality to the choir and the performances of their past choral pieces reflects this. The society are lucky enough to have members who have remained loyal throughout their long history and have many a tale to tell.
The society’s 60th anniversary gives them the opportunity to do something special, and so they are arranging a celebratory meal for past and present members. Any past members who would like to join them are welcome to email to book their place. An anniversary booklet showcasing the history of St Asaph Choral Society will also be available.
However the highlight of these diamond celebrations will be a performance of Edward Elgar’s, “The Apostles”, on Saturday 27th April. This magnificent piece of music will be performed under the superb acoustics of St Asaph cathedral by the choir,
an orchestra, Graham Eccles on the organ and six soloists all under the baton of Trystan Lewis, combining to bring this piece of Elgar’s music to life.
The St Asaph Choral would love to bring together as many people as possible to celebrate with them, especially those who have contributed to the work of the society over the years, as well as local residents and community leaders. n
St Asaph Choral Society always welcomes new members and there is no need to audition. The ability to read music is not necessary but a general understanding does help. For any enquiries please email Delyth at choralsocietystasaph@gmail.com

Up Yard celebrates its Jamaican cuisine journey
Up a Yard started in lockdown, smack bang in the middle of the pandemic when everything was closed and founder Charlotte Stanley was put on hold as head chef at 1891 as lockdown closed all restaurants. “My dream has always been to have my own business, but I never had the courage to do it,” explains Charlotte. “My friend in lockdown pushed me towards it as we weren’t doing much but sitting in the garden and trying to keep busy. And before I knew it a logo was made, a post was sent out on social media and people were talking about Up a Yard, before I had even started anything else!”
Since then Up A Yard has gone from strength to strength, and now offers dining in – meaning that you can have the full experience of Jamaica in North Wales!

I was very moved recently by a video posted by an old North Wales fisherman, whose thoughts about the future of the fishing industry here were pretty bleak. The combination of a seemingly never-ending barrage of bureaucratic demands from those up on high coupled with a dwindling intake of young people joining the industry had taken the wind completely out of his sails.
I so dearly wish I had the answers to all the problems that the fishing community are having to deal with. The very thought that commercial fishing in North Wales might one day be spoken of in the past tense should be beyond contemplation, so anything that can be done to secure livelihoods and tempt a new generation of fishermen and women onto the trawlers should be given consideration.
One thing I can do is encourage everyone to eat more fish, the more local the better. The fact that people in the UK generally still have a strange queasiness about eating fish is a complaint
that I’ve been hearing for decades. Watch old Keith Floyd or Rick Stein shows from the 80s and they were both having a moan about it even then.
To that end, I have teamed up with my old chum Toby Watson to create a cook book that celebrates all the hard work that goes into bringing ashore some of the great fishy treasures that we are lucky to have swimming around our coastline. Toby has created some superb recipes ranging from the absurdly easy to the slightly more testing. All of the recipes are perfect for bringing out the very best of what we have right here off the North Wales coast and in our rivers. n

Welsh Speciality Delicatessen & Wine Bar, The Fork, Cork & Feathers, is opening in Dolgellau this Easter weekend.
Specialising in the very best produce that Wales has to offer, The Fork, Cork & Feathers was founded out of a deep love for great food, drink and life – hence their motto, “Bwyta. Yfed. Byw” or, in English, “Eat. Drink. Live”. Owner & Manager Andrew Peirson truly loves living here in Wales, and believes that it has some of the most diverse and exciting food and drink producers in the world.
“We have travelled the length and breadth of the country, meeting on the way some truly incredible producers and learning about their stories and discovering their passion for quality,” he says. “From award winning Charcuterie and Cheese to Snowdonia Wagyu Beef and Llŷn Peninsula Venison, we want to showcase these exceptional products and give them their rightful place at the centre of the world food stage. We are always on the lookout for new sources of ideas and inspiration, so whenever we travel, we always bring back our favourite flavours and culinary discoveries and bring them into our cooking using the very best local ingredients. Drawing inspiration from almost 20 years of eating and drinking our way around Europe, we want to use this abundance of local produce and inject the passion and fire of the Spanish, the finesse and flair of the French and capture the unspoken truth that food and drink is at the heart of every home and community…. and we want to do it all right here in Wales.”
Andrew prides himself on selecting the finest ingredients and producers, and stocks their deli kitchen in much the same way that he stocks his home kitchen, with regular deliveries of fresh ingredients that he selects himself.
The chic and modern retail and dining space at The Fork, Cork & Feathers will offer a unique shopping and dining experience. Here customers can pop in for a coffee, (roasted right here in the hills of Snowdonia), peruse the wealth of seasonal Welsh produce on the deli counters, or indeed sample some of the ingredients from the homecooked Welsh ‘Tapas’ style menu (or, as they like to call it, ‘Wapas’).
If something a little stronger takes your fancy, they have hand selected some of the finest beers, wines and spirits from both Wales and around the world, which can be purchased to take away, or enjoyed into the evening on Friday and Saturday nights in the relaxed wine bar setting.
The Fork, Cork and Feathers prides themselves on quality above all else, and the team are looking forward to welcoming you through their doors when they open this Easter weekend (Good Friday and Easter Saturday from 9am until 9pm). n
Find The Fork, Cork & Feathers on Facebook and Instagram, and at their store located on Lion Street, Dolgellau, LL40 1DG.

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.
Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.
Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.
A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.
An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.
The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.
If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.
Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n
For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691 624336, or drop by the Ellesmere showroom for an informal chat to see what they can offer and how they can assist you on your low carbon home journey. www.lowcarbonhomesystems.co.uk
Public opinion is pessimistic about the future of the State pension.
Ask yourself these two questions:
J 1. Do you believe that the State pension will be around in 30 years’ time?
J 2. Do you think that the State pension will keep pace with prices over the next ten years?
If you said ‘no’ to both, then your view places you in the minority, although a sizeable one. Polling research undertaken for the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) last year revealed that a third of working-age people answered ‘no’ to the first question. Pessimism rose with age and women were consistently gloomier than men: in the age range 45–54, about 42% of women said ‘no’ compared with 31% of men. The State pension has existed since January 1909.
The perceived failure of pensions to keep pace with price inflation through to 2034 attracted 38% support, even though the opposite has been the case since 1975. Just 11% thought the pension would outpace price inflation, when that is near the
guaranteed effect of the infamous triple lock, which has been in place since 2010.
The poll results may reflect a poor understanding of the State pension, as the IFS notes. This is forgivable, as the State pension has undergone several changes in recent years. For example, there has been the introduction of the new State pension regime in 2016 and ongoing rises in State pension age. Nevertheless, the State pension remains an important foundation for retirement planning. It accounts for more than £7 in each £10 of income for the poorest fifth of retired households and is close to a quarter of all income for the richest fifth, according to the IFS.
The UK’s State pension system is much less generous than many of its European counterparts, but that means it is also more readily affordable in terms of Government expenditure. The public’s pessimism is overdone because the subsistence level at which the State pension is pitched makes its survival more likely. However, while you should not ignore the State pension in your long-term planning, neither should you rely on it alone for a comfortable retirement. n

Making a complaint against your GP practice or hospital can seem like a daunting prospect – but support is out there. Legal experts at North Wales law firm, Lanyon Bowdler, have outlined how to make a complaint and what to expect in a new podcast, which is available now.
Clinical negligence lawyer Natasha Gibbons and legal assistant Bryn Auger discuss the process in the latest episode of the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast. As Natasha says: “One of the most common enquiries we get is how to make a complaint if someone feels they have been let down by the standard of care in a healthcare setting.”
The rules differ in England and Wales. In Wales, the complaints process is known as ‘Putting Things Right’ or the ‘Redress’ system.
How long will I have to wait to hear back once I have made a complaint?
“The complaint should be made within 12 months of the incident - but ideally as soon as possible after the event, explains Bryn. “The aim is to acknowledge the complaint within two working days, and to provide a final response within 30 days, subject to available resources. The health board will often provide a timeline of what’s happened, along with comments from various medical professionals, whether that’s the doctor or nurse who treated you or one of their colleagues, and they may provide you with an apology.
“Importantly, they will advise whether they think a qualifying liability has been found – in other words, whether or not there is a potential action in clinical negligence.”
“In clinical negligence cases, in order to establish liability - i.e. negligence - two legal tests have to be proven,” says Natasha.
“The first is breach of duty – we have to prove that the patient received medical care which fell below an acceptable standard. The second is known as causation, which means we have to prove that any breach of duty has caused an injury or outcome which wouldn’t have otherwise occurred.”
If the written response confirms a ‘qualifying liability’ has been found, what happens next?
“If a qualifying liability has been found by a health board and they consider the value of the case to be less than £25,000, they are likely to make an offer to settle your case,” continues Natasha. “If you accept that offer, then that is the end of the matter – you can’t go back and complain again, so you have to be sure that the compensation is fair before making a decision.
“If the value is above £25,000, you will be advised to instruct a solicitor, if you haven’t already done so. However, we have seen cases where someone has been offered a settlement which does not adequately compensate for the losses they have suffered, so it’s always advisable to speak to a solicitor in the early stages of making a complaint.”
Bryn says: “Be aware that although you may be told you are entitled to some free legal advice, this can be misleading because it means the health board will pay a limited fixed fee to a solicitor for dealing with the valuation and negotiation of a settlement - which will not necessarily cover the true cost of the advice provided.
“However, there are various ways of funding a clinical negligence case which mean you don’t have to worry about legal costs. At Lanyon Bowdler, we offer a free initial consultation, during which we go through the details of the case with you and decide on the best course of action. During that conversation we will discuss the best options for funding your case so it works for you and your circumstances.” n

Nortenergy, the Polycrub company, is the designer and only supplier of the award-winning Polycrub. The company is based in Northmavine, Shetland and is a successful social enterprise. A Polycrub is a polytunnel/greenhouse hybrid, designed to cope with the wildest of weather, as experienced in Shetland. The Polycrub concept began as a community project in 2007, when folk wanted to reduce food miles and grow fresh produce locally, undercover. Growing spaces needed to withstand fierce gales and the community couldn’t find anything that would last, long-term. So, they developed their own! Redundant materials from the Shetland aquaculture industry are incorporated into the design. The community project attracted the attention of folk who needed a robust product. A social enterprise was created, and the structures were branded as the ‘Polycrub’. Polycrubs are now sold in kit form throughout the UK and as far away the Falklands. These sturdy growing areas are perfect for individual growers, schools or community groups, and also make a great place to enjoy hobbies, or even a G&T!

“At this time of year we can be assured of the truth concerning a new beginning or, to put it another way, a fresh start,” says Norman Clay of Words of Truth, an organisation that sends out free bibles to members of the public who request them. “As we approach Easter we can be uplifted when we muse on the times we live in. While we may have enjoyed our hobbies – or the ‘treasures in the snow’ – during the long winter nights, Easter is a reminder of the remarkable truth that God cares and that we can all start a new life that is filled with care and compassion.”

The month of March marks
National Bed Month. This year’s theme emphasises the “miracle product” that is the bed – because when we sleep on a comfortable, supportive bed, not only do we sleep better, we feel better, look better and function better. The positive effects of regular, quality sleep on a comfortable and supportive bed and on our health and wellbeing are immeasurable. Hafren Furnishers houses Wales’ largest modern, spacious Bed Studios – one is in their Llanidloes flagship store in Mid Wales (just off the A470). Due to increased demand, they increased their repertoire by adding an additional furniture store, located in Aberystwyth (just off the A44). Both Bed Studios feature the leading bed and mattresses brands, such as Sealy, Hypnos, Silentnight, Tempur, Harrison, Rest Assured and many more. Relax and try the beds and mattresses at your leisure before you purchase – it’s recommended to spend at least five minutes lying on each bed on your shortlist! The Llanidloes store has an in-store café serving daily homemade specials, freshly baked cakes and sweet treats. Both stores have lift access and free parking. The Aberystwyth store has refreshment facilities and is open seven days a week. Combine your visit with exploring the beauty of the local area and make a day of it, it will be time well spent. www.hafrenfurnishers.co.uk

“When we first viewed the property we knew it was going to be special as we couldn’t find it!” says Katy, originally from Lincolnshire who now works as a beautician and yoga teacher as well as running the holiday lets in Eryri. “You have to cross a shallow ford and continue down past ancient trees and hedgerows that are teeming with wildlife. When you arrive there are huge panoramic views in every direction, the sunsets here take my breath away every day.
Within the secluded Southern peaks of Wales’ Snowdonia National Park Mountains, Snowdonia Hideaway is a true escape into the wild. A set of warm welcoming spaces, hand crafted with real sensitivity to the land in which they reside. Owners Katy and Aled Jones opened their barn conversions in 2021, and have been fully booked ever since.
Snowdonia Hideaway is an untouched bit of paradise that we fell in love with when we bought it back in May 2015.” Over the last eight years the pair, who have three children, have renovated a large Welsh farmhouse, a hayloft glamping space and a luxury barn conversion with the help of volunteers from across the globe. “The luxury lodge used to be a community pottery, and before that a milking parlour. The community pottery is now a thriving space relocated to Tywyn where locals can go to learn to throw a pot,” continues Katy. “There is so much to explore in this area from historic sites like Castell Y Bere, to waterfalls, beach walks and more
strenuous adventures on the nearby Cadair Idris mountain or at Dyfi Bike Park. We are spoilt for choice with wonderful restaurants and cafes nearby and we also offer spa treatments for guests.” Snowdonia Hideaway has four acres of wild land, and easy access to wonderful walks right on its doorstep – making it an excellent base to take advantage of the Snowdonia National Park. Already renowned for its walking, trail running and mountain biking, this area of North Wales is fast becoming well known as one of the adventure capitals of Europe, and is just a day trip away from Europe’s longest zip line and Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in Wales. So for self-catering holidays with panoramic views and an extremely warm welcome, look no further than Snowdonia Hideaway n
In a field where women aren’t always present, it becomes crucial to ask the question: “If not, why not?”
Gender should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s passion or excelling in a profession. The funeral industry is no exception, and breaking through these gender norms is not just a personal achievement, but a step towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace.
As a funeral director and business owner, establishing myself in a traditionally maledominated industry has been both challenging and empowering. On International Women’s Day, on Friday 8th March 2024, the theme of inspiring inclusion resonates deeply with my experiences, prompting reflection on the progress we’ve made and the challenges ahead.
It’s imperative to call out poor practice. The fight for equality doesn’t end with securing a position; it continues by advocating for fair treatment and equal opportunities.
Tristan says: “At Tom Owen and Son, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of two remarkable women on our team who have passed relevant exams in their areas of work and are excelling in their roles. Kelly and Vicky’s dedication and success is great to see and a clear example of how women can thrive in any professional arena.”
Our commitment to inclusion goes beyond our team; we actively provide work experience opportunities to women looking to begin a career within the funeral sector.
I am acutely aware of the privilege I hold within this business, having entered through marriage into the family business. This awareness fuels our dedication to providing opportunities to other women, acknowledging the importance of breaking down barriers for those who may not have had such pathways readily available.
Moreover, our celebration of women is not confined to a specific day each year but is a daily practice embedded in our company culture. Recognising the contributions of women is not just a once-a-year affair, but an on-going commitment that is reflected in our business.
I have been a member of Soroptimist International in Llandudno since February 2021. This organisation, dedicated to supporting and empowering women, aligns perfectly with our commitment to real, tangible support. We don’t just say we support women; we actively engage in initiatives that uplift and empower them. These initiatives include supporting the Aberconwy Domestic Abuse Service, Conwy Clothing Bank, Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline and many other local charities. n
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us actively promote inclusion, provide opportunities, and support aspiring women. Let us contribute to a world where gender is not a limitation but a source of strength and diversity.

March’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant
ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)
The exuberance you feel about a new project on the 1st will be somewhat muted by a friend or colleague’s tendency to criticise. You might prefer to take a background approach to matters that are important to you. Watch what you say in conversations on the 8th and double check what you are writing in reports and sending in emails. Visiting a beautiful area on the 9th will be an emotionally uplifting experience.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)
You will make a worthwhile contribution to a group project on the 1st. Accomplishing something special as a team will make you want to continue with similar activities in the future. On the 10th the New Moon will bring a chance for you to volunteer for a charity. If you’re going through the same patterns repeatedly and this is bringing you no satisfaction, the Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse on the 25th will push you to break out of this rut.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)
If it feels like people are expecting too much from you on the 3rd, just take one hour at a time. If an hour seems too long, then break it down into minutes. A salesperson will be persuasive on the 8th. Whatever it is they are trying to sell to you, ask for time to consider it. If they imply a deal will not be available when you return, refuse to be manipulated by them. The New Moon on the 10th gently pushes you in new professional directions.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)
You can make a difference in a conflict on the 2nd by speaking face to face with someone who has a lot of influence. Someone will try to pull off a grand transformation when it is a gradual change that will get a better response. A troubled relative will ask for some help and advice on the 8th. They value your sensitive understanding. The New Moon on the 10th will see you making plans for a family holiday.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)
You will want to take advantage of harmonious relationships in the workplace on the 1st. Devote time to improving communications between colleagues. If there is a subject that has always fascinated you and you want to find out more, the 5th will bring an opportunity for you to pursue this dream. If you are in the market for a new home or there is a piece of property you want to buy, the New Moon on the 10th will bring the possibility of relocating one step closer.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)
You may have to face the fact that holiday plans will have to be delayed on the 13th. This does not mean you won’t ever get the chance you are hoping for to travel, just that you can’t get away right now. The New Moon on the 10th makes you wonder whether you are providing a partner with enough support to sustain your relationship. Tension is in the air on the 14th, too. On days like this avoid starting anything new. Chaotic surroundings will get you down on the 20th.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
Don’t set out to do anything important on the 3rd. Information you need will not be readily available. Just do what needs to be done and take some time off, even, for a rest. Something strange that happens on the 8th will take you by surprise. It won’t take long for you to work out that you are pleased about this too. A pilot project will go well and the New Moon on the 10th will take it to the next stage. Despite its earlier success, you should continue to handle this carefully.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)
Choose activities that engage your imagination on the 1st. If you are looking for a job, explore positions relating to education, publishing and travel. Your energy will be directed to your home on the 9th when you might decide a declutter is a good idea. The New Moon on the 10th is great for indulging your passions. Romance, a special interest or creative project are all possibilities now.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)
The New Moon on the 10th marks this as a great time to start on a home improvement project. Whether you’re planning a kitchen revamp or adding an extra room to your home, very soon, builders, plumbers and electricians will be making their way to your door. You admire frankness and honesty in others. Even so, a little tact on the 14th can help avoid upsets. A sensitive friend needs to feel supported and understood. Being able to enjoy a new and very different situation on the 20th will make for a refreshing change.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)
If you’re dragging your feet on the 9th it is in the hope that a housemate or workmate will complete a difficult job for you. Reach out to an ultra-practical friend for guidance. Despite all the practicalities and problems you are facing, you will still feel excited about a project that’s launched on the 10th. The New Moon warns that it will take time and effort to get this off the ground but it will be worth it in the end. Push negative thoughts away on the 14th or these will have an impact on your performance.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)
On the 1st, the only way to find out whether a tip you are given has any substance will be to do a little research of your own. It won’t take a lot of effort to make a loved one happy on the 8th. Give a youngster in the family who is feeling neglected a little extra time and attention. The New Moon on the 10th makes this a good time to buy items like a new laptop, vehicle or television.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)
Some ideas you have to make some changes should be put into action on the 9th and these will quickly take on solid form. There is great potential in blending common sense with creativity. The New Moon on the 10th will push you to make a start on plans you have been thinking about since the year began. The only way your partner is going to understand how you feel about matters that concern the both of you is for you to have a heart to heart discussion.
