DEAR READER

Welcome to May, the month where the rain has died down and the temperature has picked up… well at least I hope that’s actually the case by the time this magazine hits the shelves!

It seems like we have had a very long winter indeed, and I think we are all ready to welcome a bit of sunshine. And there is no better way to welcome better weather than spending a night under canvas!

And if you are looking for a bit of camping (or glamping!) inspiration then you have come to the right place. We have rounded up the best camping and glamping sites in the region and put them together in a handy guide for you on page 35. Whether you want to get away from it all, or visit somewhere that has a few more facilities and amenities, the choice is endless. One thing that they all do have in common however is stunning North Walian scenery…

Another way to enjoy the onset of spring is,

of course, to go on a day out. You can’t beat Llandudno for a traditional day by the sea, so turn to page 19 to find out what’s going on in this beautiful town. And don’t write a Llandudno adventure off just because you live there either – sometimes one of the best days out can be playing tourist in your hometown.

So perhaps take a day and walk around the town with a fresh set of eyes. Have a spot of lunch and an ice cream and truly appreciate the beauty that Llandudno – or wherever your hometown is – has to offer.

you!

The Last Prince

Dene Bebbington uncovers the story of Owain Glyndŵr – the last Welsh Prince of Wales…

It was an age when the land echoed with raucous bloody battles for justice or supremacy fought by bowmen and knights in armour. A few decades earlier Britain’s population had been decimated by the Black Death plague, but that didn’t stop the warring or the man who would forever become associated with Welsh independence.

The British Isles had been a battleground for many centuries, with the invading Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans adding to the struggles. Welsh people had been fighting off English incursions before Owain Glyndŵr was born, probably in 1354. A descendant of Welsh royalty, although his wealthy family lived on a landed estate they were still feudal tenants.

An early life studying law in London, followed by a stint at Oxford or Cambridge university, set him on a different path to that when fate intervened. In 1383 he married Margaret Hanmer with whom he had six sons and seven daughters. Sycharth – a motte-and-bailey castle close to the border with England – was Glyndŵr’s fortified manor house enclosed by a moat. He also had a home at Glyndyfrdwy overlooking the Dee valley.

The British Isles had been a battleground for many centuries, with the invading Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans adding to the struggles

Glyndŵr acquired military experience serving under King Richard II. By the late 1380s he’d stepped back from that, but a peaceful life was hard to achieve amid the constant threat from machinations and power struggles of the royal families and nobility. Discrimination under English rule drove resentment and a yearning for a free Wales. Then an unresolved dispute with Reynold Grey, 3rd Baron Grey of Ruthyn, in 1399 over seized land set Glyndŵr on a course

At Glyndyfrdwy in September 1400, Owain Glyndŵr took on his ancestral title of Prince of Wales and began his war of independence against the usurper King Henry IV. Without a large and well-equipped army, Glyndŵr and his supporters relied on guerilla tactics to attack and burn down English settlements. Yet, in the course of a few years they managed to repel royal attacks that the king expected to quell the uprising.

This method of revolt worked, especially when aided by French forces. An amnesty announced by the

king excluded Glyndŵr, so if captured he’d probably have met the same gruesome fate as others who’d been hung, drawn and quartered to deter further resistance.

Dreams of freeing themselves from Henry’s yoke were realistic in 1404 when a parliament, attended by envoys from Scotland and France, took place at Machynlleth. On this occasion Owain Glyndŵr was officially crowned Prince of Wales. The confidence didn’t last. While staying with Rhys ap Dafydd (known as Red Rhys of Snowdon) the pair were forced to dress as servants to elude the king’s men. Recognised, they scrambled up a nearby hill. After splitting up the prince got cut off from reaching the shore and a boat, so was forced to ascend Moel Hebog by the village of Beddgelert. Age was against him compared to the younger pursuers, yet he climbed a cleft in the rock and escaped to a cave in the

King Henry V failed to tempt him out since some past pardons for others were reneged upon. Thanks to the respect Glyndŵr had earned, nobody betrayed him despite the enticement of rewards.

Over the next few years the revolt faltered as the English used their castles and naval forces to blockade the supply of food and weapons. Margaret and two of their daughters were taken after a siege and imprisoned in the Tower of London where they died. By 1412 hopes of a free Wales faded. Glyndŵr was in hiding, never to be seen again by his enemies.

He’d disappeared like dissipated mist and became a ghost before his death, spending his final years a fugitive bereft of sufficient support and forces to even harry the enemy. A royal pardon offered by the new

The prince is believed to have died in September 1415, though some say 1416, and his resting place remains uncertain. According to the chronicler Adam of Usk who lived at the same time: “After four years in hiding from the king and kingdom, Owain Glyndwr died and was buried by his followers in the darkness of night. His grave was discovered by his enemies, however, so he had to be reburied, though it is impossible to discover where he was laid.”

In 2006 the Owain Glyndŵr society was told that his grave lies at Mornington Straddle in Herefordshire and that the Skidmore family had kept the secret for 600 years! But wherever he’s really buried, his exploits are legendary. The last Welsh Prince of Wales is remembered in various places. A statue of him can be found in Corwen, and a monument at Machynlleth has a poem by Dafydd Wyn Jones which translates as:

Owain, you’re our defiance, – Owain, Yours is our allegiance, Our steel, and in your stance See our nation’s renaissance.

To the letter

Theatre company The Telling performs a powerful tale inspired by Elizabethan espionage…

Music and theatre company The Telling, which has been hailed as “mesmerising” by The Guardian, is returning to North Wales on Sunday 16th June with their spell-binding concertplay (where music and theatre collide), I, Spie, by BAFTA-nominated director Nicholas Renton and awardwinning writer Clare Norburn.

I, Spie tells the story of how Renaissance composer/ lutenist John Dowland managed to foil an Italian plot on the life of Queen Elizabeth I and his ensuing grisly dealings with the Secret Service. Think Blackadder meets Spooks, soundtracked live with music by Dowland, his contemporaries, and Elizabethan tavern, street and courtly masque music thrown in for good measure!

The show is centred around an extraordinary letter which Dowland wrote to spymaster Sir Robert Cecil in 1595 while travelling Europe. Cecil had signed Dowland’s travel papers and likely told him to “keep his eyes and ears open”. So when Dowland, a Catholic Englishman, was approached by some English expats who were plotting to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I, he wrote to Cecil. I, Spie imagines the gaps in what we know about Dowland‘s life at that time, what led to the moment of his writing that letter, and what happened in the aftermath.

“Being a Catholic informant in Elizabethan England was a dangerous business – no one entirely trusted you, even if

your information was helpful,” explains writer/soprano Clare Norburn. “The 1580s had seen a series of Catholic plots and the terrifying threat of the Spanish Armada – and with the Queen ageing without any clear succession, by 1595 there was a febrile sense of panic and suspicion. In that context, it is no wonder that Dowland’s letter reads like a man out of his depths: he sounds scared for his own life – and with good reason. Catholics who informed were not always fully trusted – many ended up on the gallows. But on the other hand, he does dish up the information and effectively foil the plot… Quite how involved in it all was he?”

The Secret Service’s practice of recruiting students from Oxford and Cambridge goes back to this period. It was often seen as fashionable and exciting for students to dabble in Catholicism. As a result, there was a ready supply of potential recruits who had already shown Catholic leanings and could easily be turned as informers.

This will be The Telling’s fifth performance in North Wales. Their most recent performance was during their Carol tour in December 2023 at St Mary’s Church, Conwy. n

See I, Spie by The Telling live at Church House, Glan Conwy on Sunday 16th June 2024. For more details and tickets, visit www.thetelling.co.uk/i-spie-conwy

There is genuinely no better region to go camping in than North Wales. From seaside sites to lakeside retreats, we have it all. And, if you are a North Wales resident to start with, it’s great to know that you don’t need to spend hours on a motorway before you get to kick back under the canvas!

In addition it’s worth noting that camping isn’t what it used to be… Technology means that you are unlikely to get a leaky tent, while modern camping beds guarantee a good nights sleep. And while there is the option to ‘wild camp’ – or to choose a very simple campsite – many of the area’s sites offer a wealth of facilities and amenities, from shower blocks to bars and pizzerias!

And, if putting up a tent isn’t your idea of a holiday then fear not, as there are plenty of campsites that offer a luxury glamping option – so that you can just rock up and enjoy the view. Read on to discover some of our favourite camping and glamping sites in North Wales…

Adaptive skiing

On one side of a black run, two figures in mono sit-skis are thrashing down a mogully piste, their pace barely matched by the pair of advanced-standard, able-bodied volunteers skiing as outriders.

Previously top-level sportsmen in other fields, Andy is paralyzed from the waist down from being catapulted into a building during kite-surfing practice; while design engineer Olly, once bed-bound with a long-term illness that left him unable to walk, created his own monoski from his hospital bed – then tested it out on himself before patenting the prototype.

Olly is a fiery, friendly, red-headed Welshman with a matching ddraig goch emblazoned on his sit-ski, and he and suave English Andy are never happier than when skiing around together, exchanging cross-border insults. Every few runs, the double-act pauses with a pit-stop to tweak a bit of their rig with the multi-tool and drill in the mobile workshop they ski around with all day. As you perhaps don’t.

Now that the ski season has come to a close, Naomi Price reflects on an adrenalin-fuelled winter that catered for everybody thanks to a North Wales charity…

Then, on the other side of the piste, there’s Rachel, an elegant sit-skier with cerebral palsy, of which the brave, impossible walk is just one attribute of this cruel disease. Another is the so-called non-verbalism which belies Rachel’s articulate intelligence (she’s an adviser for Pembrokeshire county council). She’s strapped in at four points as protection against spillage, but don’t be deceived by the presence of a volunteer skier at the rear handle: it takes expertise from this accomplished sportswoman to enable every deft splitsecond turn.

If your heart lurches to see brave people such as these being carried from their chairs into the ski transfer bus, then the indulgence is all yours. There’s no self-pity there.

Adaptive skiing has its roots in the efforts made by war casualties of the last century in doing just that. It started with a pair of crutches crudely adapted for skiing and evolved over the years not just into the sophisticated Paralympic sport it is today for its competitors with nerves of steel, but also into the facility that enables recreational skiers of every disability to enjoy the activity that would otherwise be closed to them.

Ski Inclusive is a charity which provides trips to Pamporovo in Bulgaria for skiers with all disabilities. It exists and functions because of one man, Vic Rollinson, who makes it all happen from his home in Ruthin. Himself a visually-impaired skier through the loss of the sight of one eye from a water-polo

championship accident, Vic had been long involved with disabled skiing at Llandudno dry ski slope before starting Ski Inclusive to accommodate growing demand – and to offer what many had never before experienced: a real ski resort, with real snow.

First, in 2016, Vic took six Down’s Syndrome women to Pamporovo, testing out the ability of the resort to cope with disability. The following year, he brought out a sit-ski to try on the lifts – to the initial scepticism of the lift operators, who thought that the necessarily synchronized loading manoeuvres between them and volunteers would be doomed to fail.

But again, it was a success, and in 2018, the full quota of sit-skiers and ambulant skiers all holidayed in Pamporovo, facilitated by the attentive ski school – thanks to a friendship forged between Vic and Stoyan, its director, who had taught Vic to ski 40 years ago. Since then, Ski Inclusive has grown and grown. Every March, over three weeks, around 100 skiers now fly out to the resort, where the lift operators, trained in all disabilities, stay perpetually on hand.

As with other organizations which arrange similar holidays, the charity’s own are BASI-qualified (British Association of Snowsport Instructors). But true to its name, what gives Ski Inclusive the extra dimension is its natural ethos of equality: instructors don’t just knock off after skiing activities have finished for the day, because everyone carries on enjoying the bonhomie.

As Matthew, a tetraplegic skier and research scientist puts it, he’s not a diasabled skier, but a skier with a disability. There’s a world of difference in the subtle distinction. Disability doesn’t define any of the skiers with Ski Inclusive, but it’s that distinction that defines Ski Inclusive. n

Naomi

is a

She lives in the middle of nowhere with lots of animals, skis quite a lot and loves to help out with adaptive snowsports.

It takes at least three other able-bodied skiers to assist one adaptive skier, whether with loading sit-skis, skiing in tandem for space-protection, or with coaching and support. Ski Inclusive is always grateful for strong and experienced skiing volunteers wishing to give something back into the sport. The charity tries to keep prices low to make the trip affordable for all, amply catered for at the disability-friendly Kamelia Hotel in Pamporovo. Contact Vic at Ski Inclusive (07580 063252) for further details on assisting or joining.

Wild Swimming Walks

Emma Marshall is author of a new guidebook, publishing this May, in which she shares her favourite wild swims with walks in our gorgeous National Park. From ancient rainforest waterfalls to hidden woodland valleys and serene mountain lakes, she dips her way around Eryri’s best swim spots. There are 28 walks detailed, with over 50 swim spots, including blue lagoons with towering pinnacles of slate, tranquil river pools beneath canopies of oak and jacuzzi pools with roaring chutes. Emma, who lives with her family children in Bangor, and has been exploring this landscape for 20 years, says: “Eryri is a land of jaw-dropping beauty. And it’s not just the spectacular landscape that makes this place so special and unique but also the culture, language, history, heritage and legends.” Some of her favourite places are the hidden waterfalls, which have infinity pools. You can swim in the pools with a view out over the mountains, such as those on the Afon Colwyn, the Afon Llugwy and near Dolgarrog. There is a wide range of walks and swim types beyond waterfalls and you can even do a swim safari through a network of remote mountain lakes, dipping as you go. The photography is dazzling and there are also maps, directions and downloadable route information. But isn’t it cold, we asked her? “In summer the water in lakes can reach 20C, which is much warmer than the sea. And don’t worry if you only stay in the water for a short time. Your resilience to the cold water will grow. Dipping is just as wonderful and rewarding as swimming. It’s not a competition to see who can stay in longest!”

Paddle Boarding Wales

If you love water, but would rather stay out of it than in it, then Paddle Boarding Wales might be more your thing. This new guidebook is also out this month and selects the 100 best paddle board routes from across all of Wales, from rivers and meandering estuaries to wild coves and silvery sands. You will however need a paddleboard, canoe or kayak, although the book includes suggestions for where these can be rented. One route on Anglesey leads to a little known beach where there are haunting ruins and an abandoned harbour (Porth Llechog/ Bull Bay). There’s a rock arch here to paddle through. Another route launches from a vast, forest-fringed beach to discover the hidden coves and romantic ruins of a lovers’ island (Ynys Llanddwyn) the island sacred to St Dwynwen, the patron saint of lovers. Our favourite is perhaps the Dwyryd estuary; it passes the colourful Italianate Portmeirion, passing through blue pools and between white sand bars, all set against the breathtaking mountain backdrop of Mount Snowdon/Eryri.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF CARE YN DATHLU 25 MLYNEDD O OLAF

St David’s Hospice

celebrates 25 years of community care
This

month St David’s Hospice proudly marks 25 years of unwavering commitment to providing compassionate care and support to individuals and loved ones affected by life-limiting conditions.

For quarter of a century, the North Wales charity has been a beacon of hope in communities across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey, offering a haven for those navigating challenging times. The dedicated team of clinicians, volunteers, and supporters has worked tirelessly to create an environment of warmth, understanding and comfort.

Did you know…

St David’s Hospice is not run by the NHS.

The hospice is a charity and receives less than 25% of its clinical costs from central funds. This year it will cost more than £6.5million to keep the doors open. Of this the hospice will need to find £5.5million in voluntary contributions through Gifts in Wills, Charitable Donations, Fundraising Events, Gifty Aid, Lottery and Raffles.

All patients in hospices are not elderly.

In 2023, 35% of St David’s Hospice patients were under the age of 70.

Hospices are not a sad place.

The charity offers patients the opportunity to live a fulfilled and enjoyable hospice life with the emphasis on making the most of the time available to them in an environment which is friendly and comfortable. Many patients enjoy art classes, visits to the beach, jacuzzi baths and pizza nights!

Hospices are not where people go to die

In 2023, 48% of patients admitted to St David’s Hospice returned home or to another care setting. Patients visit the hospice at various stages of their illness – including a short stay to help control symptoms before going home again or coming to the hospice for respite care to give loved ones or unpaid carers a short break.

“When I entered the centre, I could see immediately what a wonderful place it was. It’s bright and fun. I enjoy coming here and look forward to my visits. I find I have a lot of peace when I come here.” Pat, a day patient at the charity’s Hafan Dewi Sant site in Bangor.

“I came to St David’s Hospice for a week of respite care. It has made such a difference to me physically and mentally. Before my week at the hospice I was in so much pain and had been in and out of hospital since November last year. I had lost the will to live. But now I feel I can do things again thanks to the hospice. I will look forward to visiting again for respite.” Sandra, a respite care patient. n

FareShare Cymru believes that no good food should go to waste…

Around 400,000 tonnes of food goes to waste in Wales each year, much of it still good to eat. If just 1% of that was saved, it could be used to provide over 9 million meals – enough to provide three meals to every person in Wales. At the same time, nearly a quarter of the population of Wales is facing poverty and struggling to access quality, nutritious food. Thousands of people across the country are suffering food insecurity and regularly going hungry.

FareShare Cymru was established in 2010 and delivers surplus food, that might otherwise go to waste, to charities and community groups, in every corner of Wales. From cookery classes and lunch clubs in community centres, to school breakfast clubs, stocking the shelves of community pantries and providing hearty meals in homelessness shelters, food redistributed by FareShare Cymru is used by charities in a variety of ways. It enables these groups to bring people together and continue offering their essential support services.

The common goal for the groups FareShare Cymru works with is to minimise the implications of hunger and bring communities together. Such projects include Tasty not Wasty, who cook, freeze and serve meals from their centre in Cwmbran, South Wales. Meals are created using ingredients supplied by FareShare Cymru and are nutritionally balanced, convenient and cost-effective for those who purchase them. The organisation was initially established in response to environmental and sustainability concerns. Over time, this project has flourished into a secure and social environment, prioritising the overall well-being of the local community.

FareShare Cymru receives their food from manufacturers, farmers and food retailers who choose to donate their surplus rather than throwing it away. Puffin Produce, a Welsh food manufacturer, have been donating their surplus food to FareShare Cymru since 2020, having donated 9.19 tonnes

of surplus food within the last 12 months – that equates to around 21,800 meals. “At Puffin we understand that the costof-living crisis is affecting everyone,” explains Sarah-Jane, from Puffin Produce. “So, if our excess produce can go a little way to helping ease the burden and ensure everyone has access to healthy meals, then we think it’s more than worth our while.”

Donations, like those from Puffin Produce, have made it possible for thousands of people to access good quality food and allow FareShare Cymru to continue their work across Wales.

At their warehouse, FareShare Cymru welcomes volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. From helping to collect surplus food, to sorting and redistributing meals, no day at the FareShare Cymru warehouse is ever the same. The food that they receive is sorted by a team of over 80 incredible volunteers, who regularly give their time to make this work possible. Their dedication is the beating heart of FareShare Cymru – ensuring that the food received gets to those that need it most. n

Moving mountains

Mountain Produce is a small farm that specialises in award-winning Welsh Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil and Welsh Cold Pressed Sunflower Oils. We found out a bit more about this unusual venture…

Founded in 2013 by Chris Boyle and Helen Eustace, Mountain Produce grows leafy salad products including lettuce, peashoots and watercress using hydroponics in their polytunnels. Situated just outside of Wrexham, the couple branched out into cold-pressed oils in 2021, and have been thrilled with the results.

“In 2020 we were looking for another product line to introduce,” explains Chris. “After many ideas we settled on Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil and built our oil production room, and started to produce Rapeseed oil. I then thought about trying some sunflower seed in the machines, and it was a success, tasting amazing! Once lockdown had started to lift, and hospitality gradually started to be able to open for business again, we started to take the oils out to restaurants and farm shops, and it has been very well received.”

The Cold Pressed Rapeseed oil is a very versatile oil, which can be used for salad dressings, dipping, baking, frying and roasting. Boasting a rich, smooth, nutty flavour, this oil has been known to produce the best roast potatoes ever!

And the proof has been in the pudding (or rather, in the potatoes…) as this locally produced Cold Pressed Rapeseed oil was awarded two stars at the Great Taste Awards last year. And considering only 11% of the whopping 14,195 worldwide entries achieved this result, this is no mean feat.

Not one to be left behind, the Cold Pressed Sunflower Dressing Oil was awarded three stars at the Great Taste Awards, and was also nominated for the ‘Golden Fork’ (champion of champions), making it one of only three products from Wales to receive this honour. Out of the 14,195 entries this product was judged to be in the top 30 worldwide! Chris recommends serving it drizzled over fresh Welsh asparagus or new potatoes while they are in season this May!

Mountain Produce is the only UK producer of Cold Pressed Sunflower Oil, which is testament to how Chris and Helen are pushing the boundaries of traditional farming. And it’s a gamble that paid off, as the judges at the Great Taste Awards said: “The colour of your cold-pressed sunflower oil is truly stunning, golden yellow with hints of silver. The mouthfeel is perfectly smooth and coats the palate so very well. And, when tasting, we are treated to slow-release yet precise bursts of sunflower seeds, along with flavours of cashew nut, butter, warm grasses and clear notes of sunflower.”

As well as great taste, sustainability is very important to Mountain Produce. “We only use solar power for both our fresh produce and our cold pressed oils,” continues Chris. “And we only use a very small proportion of our land for production of our fresh produce, the rest of the land we manage via conservation grazing to promote wildlife habitats. We keep a flock of critically endangered North Ronaldsay sheep, and also have Dexter cattle and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs to help keep the gorse and bracken in control and allow wildflowers to flourish.”

Fabulous flavour from a local producer that champions sustainability – what’s not to love? And they aren’t stopping at cold pressed oils and fresh produce either…

“We have been working through the winter setting up our next new product line… herbs, grown in a controlled environment with heat, humidity and lighting all controlled and powered by our new solar panels,” concludes Chris. “Imagine – basil grown at 1200ft in North Wales!”n

Renewable energy systems for your home

Ellesmere based Princes LHS are MCS approved installers of renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar Thermal, Air Source and Ground Source Heat Pumps. As well as Renewable energy installers they are also NICEIC electrical contractors, Gas Safe & OFTEC accredited heating contractors.

Over the last few months energy prices have become very unpredictable, with significant rises in energy prices compared to previous years. This has made solar PV and battery storage even more attractive and means payback can be achieved in anywhere between 5 and 10 years which is a bonus when considering you are also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. As well as storing solar energy generated by the solar panels a battery can also be charged from the grid using cheap off peak electricity tariffs, making payback even quicker. Some of the battery systems can even provide back up power in the event of a power cut, meaning your solar system is still operational, helping power your home and stay off grid even longer.

Princes LHS are approved installers of the market leading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system, (www.TeslaPowerwall.co.uk) which they have on display in their renewable energy showroom in Ellesmere “Low Carbon Home Systems” as well as being installers of other battery systems such as GivEnergy, SAJ, and Pylontech amongst others. There are incentives available for anyone who exports the electricity they produce, with some of the larger energy providers now offering in excess of 15 pence per kWh for any electricity sold back to the grid using the “smart Export Guarantee” (SEG), which is currently only available when having your system installed by an MCS accredited company such as Princes LHS.

A sensible option to fit alongside a Solar PV system due to it being powered by electricity is a heat pump which heats your home replacing your fossil fuel boiler and connecting to your wet central heating system. There is a £7,500 grant to go towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. If you have gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating you are eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Grant which as MCS accredited contractors, Princes LHS can apply for on your behalf.

For more information please give Princes LHS a call on 01691

see what they can offer and how they can assist you on

An air source heat pump works by extracting heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat the home via radiators or underfloor heating and also provides all of the hot water required in the home. Equally important is the fact that it is able to operate when outside temperatures drop as low as -20°C. Typically a heat pump can achieve efficiencies of 400% meaning for every 1kw of electricity consumed it will produce 4kw of heat, compared to a fossil fuel boiler being somewhere between 75% and 90% efficient. Alternatively, a ground source heat pump is like a traditional central heating boiler, but, instead of using oil or gas, it uses heat extracted from the earth. Rather than buying fossil fuels from a supplier, you would be using renewable energy for your heating and hot water meaning you will not only be doing your bit to help the environment, you will also save money on your heating bills.

The Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy showroom in Ellesmere has been open for three years and displays a number of the latest innovative products including working examples of solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. There are Eco Forest and CTC ground source heat pumps, various models of Air Source Heat Pumps including Mitsubishi, Samsung and Midea. There are Solar PV panels on display – both integrated and above the roof, and solar thermal hot water panels. There is nothing like seeing the products in person so that you can get a feel for their look and size.

If you are considering changing your car to electric, you will need to consider a home charger. Installing a purpose-made charging point will reduce your charge time and manage your energy usage. Princes LHS are able to supply and install your charger which can also be integrated with electricity produced by solar energy to help “squeeze out” every last drop of energy being produced by the solar panels.

Princes LHS are able to offer a full home solution and have helped many customers on their “self-build home” journey. From below the ground to above the roof and everything in between Princes LHS can offer the full package, including electrical installation, LED Lighting, plumbing & heating, bathroom installation, underfloor heating, MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery), radiators, Solar PV, Battery storage, Solar thermal and Heat pumps. n

“I JUST WANT TO KEEP MY WILL SIMPLE” – OR DO YOU?

Writing a Will doesn’t have to be complicated – but it does need to protect your assets and reflect your circumstances.

Emma Deering and Sioned Williams, of Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Conwy, say although people usually just want a “simple Will”, it’s always worth sitting down with an expert to ensure it meets your wishes.

“We always sit down with a client to begin with, going through a variety of information to ensure we have the full picture regarding their finances and family background,” explains Emma. “It really depends on your circumstances, such as whether you are married or have children from a previous relationship, as to how your Will needs to be structured.

“All of the Wills we prepare are done on a bespoke basis, tailored to the client’s individual needs and circumstances. An important element is going through the assets in their family estate so we can provide Inheritance Tax advice.

“In terms of Inheritance Tax, each individual has a tax-free allowance of £325,000 - anything above that is liable to a tax of 40% unless reliefs apply.”

Emma and Sioned outline a number of scenarios in the latest edition of Lanyon Bowdler’s Legal Lounge podcast, which is available now on all podcast platforms and the firm’s website at www.lblaw.co.uk/podcast

Sioned says: “Let’s take Mr and Mrs Jones, a married couple in their 30s, with four young children. They have a joint mortgage on a property worth about £300,000 and have savings of approximately £30,000.

“If they expressed the wish that everything should go to the survivor on the first death, with provision that on the second death the estate was split between the children, then a standard Will would be suitable for them. We could talk about discretionary trusts, but based on the value of their assets and the family circumstances, there would be no real need for one as they would be below the threshold for Inheritance Tax.

“However, if we move the scenario on to another Mr and Mrs Jones who are in their 60s, in a second marriage with each

having children from their previous marriages, then a more sophisticated Will strategy would be better for them.”

Emma says one of the most common concerns people have relates to care fees.

“In Wales, there are different rules for the capital limit for care fees than in England,” she says. “In Wales, if you have assets in excess of £50,000 then you have to fully fund the cost of your care, unless you have what is called a primary health need. In England, the capital limit is lower at £23,500.

“I often get clients who say they are quite happy to contribute to the cost of their care, but don’t want all of their estate dissipated to pay for their care fees so there’s nothing left for their children. We can advise on different Will structures so as to potentially offer some protection against that.”

Sioned adds: “All of these examples demonstrate that although it may be tempting to keep things simple and maybe do it yourself using an online Will-writing kit, you then miss out on some really important advice that a lawyer can provide.

“Solicitors will ask questions that you would not consider yourself, and although you might just want a simple Will – that may not be the right option for you.” n

Gold certificate awarded to St David’s student

The Royal Society of Chemistry has awarded a talented chemist from St David’s College a Gold certificate in the 56th Chemistry Olympiad. Year 13 student Edwin won the gold by his brilliant problem-solving skills as he had the chance to test his knowledge in a real-world situation. “Receiving a Gold in the Chemistry Olympiad makes me very happy, and I’m looking forward to be going to Nottingham University to study space science and to see where it takes me.” It’s a huge accolade, as the UK Chemistry Olympiad is the leading chemistry competition for secondary students across the British Isles. What is remarkable is Edwin, who joined the school in Year 8, has achieved this while having very severe dyslexia. Edwin is on track to leave St. David’s college with A grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry A-levels along with a Distinction Star in Outdoor Sports and Recreation.

A year of success

2024 is a year of celebration for Moreton Hall, it is not just a celebration of the school’s 110 year anniversary but a celebration of individual success and achievement.

Throughout its 110 year tenure and as the landscape around the school has changed, Moreton has remained as stalwart as it did when it was first established by Ellen Lloyd-Williams. Moreton has always prided itself on its rich past but as an institution it has always had an extremely strong focus on developing its future.

More recently, in 2023, Moreton received a one million pound investment in the infrastructure of the school site. The investment into the school represents a commitment to Moreton’s future and to the longevity of the school. The investments into the school means that Moreton’s existing facilities will not only see an upgrade but also expansion. The most recent upgrade saw the school’s pool undergoing a full refurbishment.

2024 also marks the ten-year anniversary of Moreton’s Centenary Science and Medical Centre. The Science Centre offers cutting edge technology and laboratories for those aspiring to follow a career in STEM. Moreton has also had a strong tradition of preparing students for Medical and Veterinary careers, so the addition of the Centenary Centre to the site was a reason to celebrate.

Sports continues to have an effervescent presence at Moreton, with the First Lacrosse Team winning the National Schools Lacrosse Championship this year. Moreton’s team took part in a gruelling weekend of Lacrosse, playing some of the best Lacrosse players in the country. Moreton has long since nurtured Lacrosse, and many pupils have been selected to play in the English or Welsh U19 Lacrosse squads.

Moreton music and drama also continues to flourish, with the Middle School production of Annie Jr being a sell out success. The Senior School production of Grease was also the perfect choice to showcase the plethora of acting, singing and dancing talent of Moreton’s Lower Five to Upper Sixth pupils. Moreton’s

annual Musical Soirée also truly captured what is magical about Moreton’s music department and displayed the depth and breadth of creativity of the whole school.

The 2023/2024 academic year has also brought many reasons to celebrate and whilst Moreton’s celebrates its collective success, it is also important to note pupil’s individual successes.

Pupils from Year 7 to Upper Sixth achieved six distinctions, 15 Merit + and six Merits in their English-Speaking Board (“ESB”) examinations, while eight of Moreton’s pupils won their individual category at the Chester Festival of Performing Arts.

Moreton’s 2023 A-Level results saw 75% of students achieving their first choice of university, most of which were Russell Group. In the same year GCSE results outperformed national expectations. Old Moretonian Tarryn Stanhope, who left Moreton in 2023, won the Outstanding Student award in the British Education Awards and attributed her academic success to Moreton’s holistic, enthusiastic and unordinary education system.

Moreton Hall continues to be an aspirational, joyous and nurturing school where belonging and ambition are intrinsically intertwined. n

Specialist tax advice offered Owners of Furnished Holiday Lets (FHLs) face some tough decisions before April 2025. The UK government is abolishing the preferential tax regime that owners currently enjoy. Owners will face greater costs and lower profits after next April, and crucially, far higher tax bills when they sell their properties. Many owners will be looking at whether moving your business into a Limited company is the right answer. Using a company structure can preserve the current tax benefits particularly around mortgage interest costs and Capital Gains Tax when selling. However, setting up a company comes with significant costs including potential Welsh stamp duty considerations. It’s crucial that owners take a holistic view of their long-term plans before making any decisions. PropertyTax.Wales offer a fixed price package for detailed appraisal of the changes to your finances and your possible options. propertytax.wales

Get ready for your

wildest summer yet!

Who doesn’t love being outside with the sun on your face, a light breeze swaying, the sound of bees buzzing in the garden and birdsong in the trees?

Spending time in nature is proven to benefit our mental and physical health. Evidence shows that people who connect with nature every day are more resilient, experience reduced social isolation and loneliness, and have better all-round health and happiness.

But do we always make the time to stop and notice, to take five minutes to fully appreciate our natural surroundings? The team at North Wales Wildlife Trust are encouraging you to do just that, as they invite you to join them in going ‘30 Days Wild’ in June.

Now in its tenth year, and with over three million people taking part in the UK’s biggest nature challenge from The

Wildlife Trusts since 2015, the challenge is to do one wild thing every day throughout June. Weekly themes will help you get out more, discover more, and connect with and support nature more, in this wonderful part of the world.

Stop to smell a flower on your way to the shops, take a moment to watch squabbling sparrows in a hedge or a butterfly feeding on a flower, give up single-use plastics, visit a nature reserve or support a campaign for nature, 30 Days Wild is all about helping you connect with the natural world and do a little bit of good for wildlife at the same time.

Over 2,000 people signed up in North Wales last year. That’s a whole lot of happy people and a whole lot of actions to benefit nature! Let’s spread the joy even further this year – turn up the feel-good factor this summer and go 30 Days Wild in June! n

Sign up for the 30 Days Wild challenge

Families and individuals who sign up will receive a free digital or postal pack providing lots of inspiration along the way, and there are specially designed packs for schools, care homes and businesses too! www.northwaleswildlifetrust.org.uk/30DaysWild_NWM

Eternal Blooms: Preserving Fresh Funeral Flowers

Funeral flowers serve as a beautiful and meaningful tribute to someone that has died. They are a great way to express love, sympathy and support during times of grief. Funeral flowers can help to symbolise their life and memory, especially if you choose flowers or colours that are meaningful to the person that has died. Unfortunately, these flowers won’t last forever and therefore more people are exploring creative ways to retain these precious blooms. In this article, we will look into the art of preserving funeral flowers alongside some practical tips on how to do it.

Can you dry funeral flowers?

Drying flowers has been a popular method of preserving their beauty for a long time. This is one of the easiest methods to try.

J Air drying: Take a small amount of flowers from the arrangement and bind together at the stems with some string or ribbon. You need to hang the flowers upside down in a cool, dry and dark place for 2-4 weeks. This method is best for sturdier flowers such as roses and lavender.

J Oven drying: Take a baking tray and some parchment paper and place your flowers, minus any foliage, on the tray. Bake at a low heat and check on them within an hour. Your flowers may lose petals or colour in the oven, so this method is best if you’re planning to make potpourri.

J Desiccant drying: Submerging your flowers in desiccant, such as silica gel or cat litter, and allowing them to dry out for a few weeks is another method. This does allow the colour of the blooms to be preserved better.

Can you press funeral flowers?

Pressing is an ideal method for those delicate flowers such as daisies and pansies. In order to press flowers, you need to place the petals between sheets of parchment paper, within

the pages of a heavy book and leave for several weeks. Once they have dried out, you can then use them within framed pictures or other craft projects.

Flower pressing kits are available and designed for those who want a fuss-free way to preserve flowers. These kits typically include a flower press, parchment paper, and instructions on how to press and preserve your funeral flowers. This is an excellent option for those without the time or inclination for the other preservation methods.

In conclusion

Preserving funeral flowers is a touching way to remember the person that has died. Whether you choose to dry or press the flowers, the possibilities are endless. By preserving funeral flowers, you can create lasting mementos that serve as a comforting reminder of the love and support shared during a difficult time. n

ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)

An older relative will be making a thorough nuisance of themselves on the 1st. It doesn’t matter what you say or do, you can’t seem to please or placate them. GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)

Anything agreed on that makes running your home more economical, will be worthwhile on the 2nd. A difficult situation will be handled surprisingly well on the 13th – keep conversations light at this time.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)

A letter or email on the 3rd will bring news you have been waiting for, even if it isn’t quite what you were hoping to hear. Instead of dwelling on negatives, the New Moon on the 8th encourages you to start counting your blessings.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)

The New Moon on the 8th makes this a good time to start new projects and get ideas off the ground. You need to calm your mind and thoughts to make an important choice on the 10th. LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)

It will be hard to keep to a diet on the 1st. Send a housemate out to do the weekly food shop or you will be tempted to purchase some tasty treats. Variety will be the spice of life on the 13th.

You will be keen to put ideas in motion on the 7th and by the 14th you will be delighted by the results of your hard work. A disagreement on the 17th will cause conflicting emotions.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)

If there is tension in the home or workplace on the 1st and you can’t find a way to restore harmony, you would do just as well to disappear off the scene for a short while. Look into measures you might take to improve your health on the 8th when the New Moon will help you identify unhealthy patterns and triggers. Don’t be too hasty to put suggestions of workmates and housemates into operation on the 17th.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)

Take advantage of your creativity and get involved with an artistic project on the 6th. Romance and pleasure will feature strongly on the 8th when the New Moon hints of some happy experiences. You can’t afford to go by superficial impressions on the 17th.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)

Your mind is going at some speed on the 8th so you are certain to come up with some great ideas. The New Moon will inspire you to act on some of the more practical ones. Although you are in two minds about this, it might be worth taking a small chance.
