Porthdinllaen on the Llŷn Peninsula is an absolutely fantastic spot in which to enjoy a summer’s day out. The only way to reach this idyllic fishing village is via foot – you can park in either the National Trust car park at the bottom of Lon Golff, or in the Golf Club car park itself. Once you reach the sandy beach you are rewarded with magnificent views, sheltered waters, interesting rock pools and a chance to sit back and relax. However the jewel in the Porthdinllaen crown has got to be the Ty Coch Inn – recently voted as one of the top ten beach bars in the world… Editorial credit: Kevin Hellon / Shutterstock.com

But, perhaps more importantly for the people of Bangor, visitors to the city and students at the university Bangor Pier has been making memories since 1896. The pier was officially opened on 14th May 1896 by Lord Penrhyn following a procession through the city and a crowd of over 5,000 people assembled to watch the opening ceremony. This year the celebration for the 125th anniversary was markedly different with no large-scale event possible due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the Mayor unveiled a new plaque by the entrance commemorating the anniversary and was joined by other members of Bangor City Council, pier kiosk holders and

A Grade II-listed structure, Bangor Pier is perfectly positioned on the Menai Strait and offers magnificent views of Anglesey and the mountains of Snowdonia on the mainland. Built when piers were beginning to be recognised as valuable attractions to seaside resorts, it was felt at the time that a proper promenade pier at Bangor would offer a unique visitor experience. A few more miles from our home in Caernarfon, in the other direction along the Menai Strait, we can experience another tidal phenomenon: the currents of the Swellies, in the narrow water between Bangor and Menai Bridge, whose eddies and whirlpools are respected by boatmen for their dangerous foibles. The curvature of the water in the Menai Strait means that the currents can flow in both directions at the same time – so that, as the tide is falling, the water is forcing out of the strait at both ends – and conversely, the rising tide can be flowing into the strait from both ends at the same time. And so the Swellies are a formidable confusion of water, as the tide ebbs

burger patties, streaky bacon rashers, brioche buns, two juicy brisket slices, eight slices of American cheese and a mix of pickles and onions for that final flourish. Add 12 slow cooked chicken wings, a full rack of Memphis Ribs, two giant Hickory smoked sausages, four corn on the cob and a vat of house slaw and you have just about the most epic BBQ feast imaginable. The box also includes easy-to-follow heating instructions for how to cook and heat on your BBQ (and in the oven), giant bibs for when it gets messy, a bag of popcorn and even a special US inspired yard game! Of course you’ll need a refreshing drink to wash down all that southern BBQ… In which case you might like to order from Cariad’s wide selection of gins. Cariad Gin is distilled and bottled at the Clwydian Range Distillery, in the heart of the Flintshire countryside, and its flavours include Marmalade and Bayleaf Gin, Blackcurrant Gin, Plum Crumble Gin and Lemon and Lime Gin. Taster sets are also available which are presented in a beautiful gift box which allow you to sample a number of gins paired with recommended tonic and dehydrated fruit so that you can decide which is your favourite. And don’t forget to leave room for dessert! Chilly Cow is set to launch a new flavour this June – alongside their other sumptuous flavours their new Pear and Ginger has already been a hit with taste testers. You’ll be able to pick up the new flavour at its farm-based honesty box, which is open from 11am every day, as well as in selected outlets around North Wales. And finally, for when the sun has set, Cariad Gin also stocks natural soy candles which are bound to help keep your party going to the early hours… n

For tonight A new musical based on a true North Walian family is set to be released this summer…

story begins in 1832, in a small town in North Wales, where a Roma family travels through, finding shelter on the farm of the Parry family. Soon after their arrival, the Parry parents die from an unknown disease and the Roma are forced to go into hiding, after being blamed for bringing ‘filth and death’ to Trelawnyd. The story then follows the three Parry children, Thomas, Haydon and Nettie, in the aftermath of their parents’ death. While the elder brother, Thomas, struggles with the

OF THE

Month Rum Sunset

To say that May was a washout is something of an

understatement, but we have it on good authority that things can only get brighter in June! As well as the sun making a reappearance, our fabulous bars and restaurants are open once again – meaning that we can now get out and about and enjoy being waited on hand and foot in glorious surroundings. If, however, you are easing yourself back into the social scene more slowly, then mix up this fabulous rum cocktail and enjoy at home – preferably in the garden…

INGREDIENTS 12 oz. orange juice 3 oz. light rum 2 tbsp. grenadine Lime slices, for garnish INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine orange juice and rum. Set aside 1/3 of the mixture 2. Pour 2/3 of the orange juice mixture into two icefilled glasses. Set aside 3. Mix reserved orange juice and rum with 2 tbsp. grenadine. Slowly pour into each glass so that it settles on the bottom, creating an ombré effect 4. Garnish with lime slices 5. Enjoy in a sunny spot in the garden!

IN THE MIX

Of course, if you’d rather sit back and relax while somebody mixed your ideal cocktail for you, then why not visit Sheldon’s in Colwyn Bay? From a Margarita to a Mojito, it has quite the cocktail selection and is quickly becoming the place to go for cocktails in North Wales. 01492 339821 www.sheldonsbar.co.uk

Month PROPERTY OF THE

Breathing new life into a forgotten Victorian landmark, The Copper Beeches is a stunning collection of over 70 luxury apartments, perfectly situated in the heart of the North Wales commuter belt and overlooking the Dee Estuary. Located on the site of the former Lluesty Hospital in Holywell, breathtaking Victorian architecture has been carefully restored in order to create one of the most impressive new developments in the region. Four of Lluesty’s original buildings, including the chapel, have been saved, while a further four newly-constructed buildings sit to the north of the site in order to house the luxurious apartments, all of which will be finished to an exceptionally high standard. First-time buyers are able to purchase via the government’s Help To Buy scheme, making this a fantastic opportunity to get onto the property ladder. Families are well catered for too thanks to the gated community offering onsite social space and landscaping – and you’re only ever a stones throw away from local parks and waterfronts, rural gastro pubs and restaurants and world famous landmarks. One-, two- and three-bedroom homes are currently available, and prices start from just £139,999. Completion of this fantastic McCrory Holdings development is expected later this year. n For more information Homes at The Copper Beeches are available via Peter Large Estate Agents. Iceland urges North Wales companies to join green crusade The UK’s “greenest grocer” has launched an appeal to companies across North Wales and Merseyside to join the carbon zero crusade to help save the planet. The call to arms from Richard Walker (pictured), the managing director of pioneering eco-aware supermarket Iceland, came ahead of Net Zero 2021, a major online business conference. Iceland was the first supermarket to sign up to the worldwide Carbon Pledge to become carbon neutral by 2040, ten years ahead of the UK Government’s 2050 target. Walker has led the £4 billion Flintshire-based food giant’s response to the climate crisis and its drive towards a goal of zero carbon. Now he has called on the private and public sector across North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire to join their campaign. “We all have to step up and take action because the clock is ticking,” he said. “The sheer scale of what we need to do can seem overwhelming, but there’s a starting point for all of us and it’s here and now and it’s about committing to a Net Zero future.”

EDUCATION NEWS St David’s creates “whole person” approach to education The aim of St David’s is a simple one – to create a unique whole person education centred on the individual, built on Christian principles, and embedded in a family atmosphere. Taking a “whole person” approach, allows the school to find the true gifts of every individual and tailor their education accordingly. Staff take the time to discover and unwrap each child’s gift by cultivating their interests in academic or extracurricular areas, whilst recognising and nurturing extraordinary character traits, while the bespoke education package allows each child to grow much further than just simply gaining the knowledge to pass exams. Many of St David’s leavers go on to top Universities to study architecture, engineering, maths, physics, and a wide range of other subjects, and the school prides itself on supporting students through BTECs and on into apprenticeships with many different companies. Education at St David’s is not confined to the classroom. Outdoor Education plays an important role in the educational experience at St David’s, building confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills. As part of the curriculum, our pupils try new things with multiple excursions leaving site each week including activities such as climbing, sailing, skiing, and kayaking. www.stdavidscollege.co.uk

Local friends launch home accessories business Caroline and Melanie are two friends from Rhos-on-Sea who are following their dream of finding and selling beautiful home accessories and luxury gifts. Their company, Stanley & Lottie (named after their respective Cockapoo’s!), endeavours to choose products that are of excellent quality, a little bit different and, most importantly, affordable. “We believe that our customers should be able to treat themselves and their loved ones to luxury items at sensible prices,” explained co-founder Caroline. “Living in North Wales we knew that we were surrounded by great talent and craftsmanship, so a selection of our products are handmade right here in North Wales, and this is an area of our business we will continue to expand.” Stanley & Lottie hand delivers locally free of charge, and all of its orders are gift wrapped to add that special finishing touch. “Our customers are more than welcome to message us if they have any special requests for example, adding a personal message to their purchase or posting to a different address,” continues Caroline. “Starting a new business during a pandemic is hard work but also extremely rewarding. The support we have received from our local community for our little business so far has been amazing, and we hope this will continue to help us reach our next goal of opening a little shop locally.” www.stanleyandlottie.com

Awards success for Peter Large Estate Agents Peter Large Estate Agents, Abergele, has just won The British Property Award for Conwy county. Its team performed outstandingly throughout the extensive judging period, which focussed on customer service levels. Peter Large Estate Agents, Abergele, has now been shortlisted for a number of national awards which will be announced later in the year. The British Property Awards provides agents throughout the UK with an invaluable opportunity to compare the service that they provide against the service provided by their local, regional and national competition. Agents who go that extra mile and provide outstanding levels of customer service are rewarded with the accolade, which acts as a beacon to highlight these attributes to their local marketplace. www.peterlarge.com

BEDDGELERT AND THE ABERGLASLYN PASS

Beddgelert is one of Snowdonia’s truly Alpine villages set as it is in a mountain-surrounded valley at the confluence of the River Glaslyn and the River Colwyn. It is very colourful in spring and summer and extremely popular with tourists almost all year round. Beddgelert is simply beautiful and makes a great place to start walks from, and these can be easy or difficult depending on your preference. As you don your boots in the village car park you can gaze up at mighty Moel Hebog (2,569 ft./783 metres) and marvel at the fact that it’s possible to climb it from the village – but it is a steep and rugged ascent, and only suitable for those with plenty of hill walking

How oxygen therapy can help The past 14 months or so has been an incredibly strange time for us all – like nothing any of us have ever experienced before.

As a result, millions of us feel more stressed, anxious, depressed and generally under the weather than ever before… whether that be because of the pandemic itself, changing circumstances or work pressure. STARS...

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

Junes’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) Striking a balance between your personal and professional lives will be challenging at the beginning of the month. It may be necessary to draw firm boundaries with a demanding relative who doesn’t care about your career interests. On the 10th, a Solar Eclipse could trigger an important conversation with a neighbour or relative. Take this opportunity to address a sensitive subject.

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) The opening days of June could have happy news regarding your career. It’s possible you’ll land a job that draws on your creative talent. On the 10th, a Solar Eclipse will open the door to a publishing or educational venture that’s intellectually stimulating. You’ve been blessed with a brilliant brain, which is why you’ll be granted this position.

TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) You’ll feel loved and adored in the opening days of June. Use this support as a springboard to a lifelong goal. A Solar Eclipse on the 10th brings an intellectually stimulating job opportunity. Not only will this position engage and delight you, it will also enrich you. On the 24th, the Full Moon could mark the culmination of an academic programme or trip.

SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) Harsh words between you and an expert could be exchanged at the beginning of June. Instead of resisting this person’s efforts to teach you, put your pride aside for the sake of personal growth. A Solar Eclipse on the 10th could bring financial relief in the form of an inheritance, legal settlement, or rebate. Spend this money upgrading electronic equipment.

GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) You will be sought for your expertise at the beginning of June. Don’t be surprised if you get a chance to teach an online course or workshop. The Solar Eclipse on the 10th inspires you to undergo a dramatic transformation. This is an ideal time to get a makeover, change your name, or step into a new professional role.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) Brainstorming with a respected friend or colleague will be fruitful in the opening days of June. Any ideas you get for a product, service or app are worth developing. Resist the temptation to quit a paying assignment in a huff during the middle of the month; it’s better to let silly criticisms and tense situations roll off your back.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) On the 10th, the Solar Eclipse will trigger a spiritual awakening. Give yourself permission to abandon some worldly concerns that have been weighing on your heart. In mid-June, you might decide to resume a course of study that brings you pleasure. Obey an impulse to sign up for an advanced course or study with a respected teacher.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) A power struggle with your romantic or business partner could erupt in early June. Even if you do have more clout, it would be wise to meet your other half in the middle. The Solar Eclipse on the 10th is perfect for launching a fitness regimen. Exercise that involves quick reflexes and precision could be especially enjoyable.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) It’s possible you’ll take the helm of a prestigious organisation in the opening days of June. A Solar Eclipse on the 10th is ideal for making a speech, publishing a piece of writing, or recording a podcast. Your words will uplift and inspire people. Mid-month will be an especially busy time, as you’ll be intent on promoting your agenda whenever and wherever possible.

AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) Your powerful personality will draw admirers from every corner at the beginning of the month. If you’re single, you may not be so for much longer. On the 10th, the Solar Eclipse could deliver the ideal partner to your doorstep. Are you already in a relationship? It will feel like you’ve embarked on a second honeymoon together.

VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) Early June delivers some excellent professional prospects to you. It’s possible you will be working remotely with an overseas client who appreciates your attention to detail. On the 10th, the Solar Eclipse could find you stepping into a leadership role. In mid-June, it may be necessary to deal with some unforeseen legal problems.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) Love and romance are yours for the asking at the start of June. If you have a partner, arrange to do something special with your amour. Are you single? You could meet an attractive person through a mutual family friend. The Solar Eclipse on the 10th presents a great opportunity to upgrade your living situation. You could relocate to a nicer home quite suddenly.
