Llynnau Mymbyr are two lakes located in Dyffryn Mymbyr, a valley running from the village of Capel Curig to the Pen-y-Gwryd hotel in Snowdonia. Strictly speaking this is one lake, originally called Llyn Mymbyr, with a maximum depth of around 30 feet. About three quarters of a mile long in total, a delta has built up midway along the north shore, and this has to all purposes cut the lake in two – hence the plural name. From Llynnau Mymbyr, which are also known as the Capel Curig Lakes, you’ll find lovely views across the water to the surrounding mountains – and it is a particularly good spot to get a photo of the Snowdon Horseshoe across the water.

TAKE A BREAK

Autumn is a wonderful time of year to sneak away for a relaxing break, when brisk walks and pub lunches are the order of the day. Here are six fabulous places to escape to this October…

North Wales is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year – and autumn is no exception. So why not take a break and escape for a few days in your own autumnal retreat?

A good place to get away from it all is Cae Cyd in Penmaenmawr. This stunning barn conversion commands superb views over Conwy Bay to Anglesey and the Great Orme at Llandudno. This two-bedroom holiday cottage sleeps four adults, with two bedrooms, both of which are en suite. The super king bedroom (which can be converted to twin beds) has an en suite shower room, and the second bedroom has a king size bed with en suite bathroom with over bath shower.

Both bedrooms are on the ground floor and have patio doors onto a private patio – which is a lovely area to enjoy the spectacular views. Snuggle up under a blanket on one of the sun loungers and make the most of the fresh autumn air. If it does get a bit too brisk however, fear not, as Cae Cyd also features gas central heating as well as a romantic a log burner in the lounge.

A bit further along the coast and you’ll find Escape Boutique B&B – Llandudno’s first contemporary boutique bed & breakfast hotel offering exclusive, unique and stylish accommodation.

All nine double bedrooms have been individually designed with a different luxurious contemporary theme. Escape for a deserved weekend break, escape the kids or escape from

your conventional corporate business accommodation offering. Or you could even escape with your friends and book the whole villa for your very own private ‘house party’. All of the wonderful rooms come with a full Welsh breakfast to boot.

If you’d rather self cater however, No 9 Palm Court is also located in picturesque Llandudno. Situated right on the promenade, with magnificent views of the sweeping bay and the Great Orme, all three of the large self-contained apartments at No 9 Palm Court offer their own well-equipped kitchens, lounge and bathrooms, making them ideal for couples or families.

As well as the stunning sea views, these dog-friendly apartments offer unrestricted promenade parking and are situated close to Venue Cymru, shops and restaurants – making them an ideal base to explore the Queen of Welsh Resorts…

If you’d rather take your autumn break inland however, then why not consider Bryntirion Inn near Bala? ‘The Bryn’ as it’s affectionately known, is the ideal place to stop over in the Dee Valley.

Even the car park is attractive at ‘The Bryn’, surrounded as it is by gardens and a wood – and it call all be found just four miles from stunning Lake Bala.

Five minutes with panto legend Daniel Lloyd

Daniel Lloyd is a hugely familiar face to Theatr Clwyd audiences, but this year he will be found behind the scenes…

Daniel Lloyd has performed in no less than 16 pantomimes at Theatr Clwyd, not to mention productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Taming of The Shrew and Animal Farm. You may also have spotted him on TV shows like Brassic and Rownd a Rownd. Off the stage Daniel is a hugely talented musician and director. This year he puts down his guitar and will be directing Sleeping Beauty alongside Francesca Goodridge. The pair are also the Associate Directors of Theatr Clwyd. We sat down with Daniel to find out more…

Q: In an interview back in 2021 you said you would like to direct the panto one day, and here you are! You must be very excited to be co-directing Sleeping Beauty this year?

A: Oh yes I am! I’m over the moon. I owe much of my adult working life to Theatr Clwyd and I have learned most of my craft here alongside some world class directors, actors, actormusicians and creatives. It’s a great place to work and I consider myself very lucky. I’ve soaked it all in over the years and to finally get my hands on the panto as a director really is a dream come true! I promise to take good care of it!

Q: You have directed many productions and you were Associate Director last year for Robin Hood. Is directing panto very different to directing other shows?

A: Not really. I often think in musical terms when directing. It’s all about rhythm, tempo and dynamics. The pace of panto is like a rollicking rock ‘n roll song and my job is to piece all the beats and rhythm of it together. It’s a magic musical jigsaw with loads of fun elements and detail. Panto needs to be larger than life so it’s obviously not like directing a naturalism play. You do however still need to find the truth in the characters and the rules of the world they inhabit… veering from that, breaking the fourth wall and letting our audience in on the fun is a huge part of it but the foundation needs to be there in order to do that. If we get the storytelling right we can do what we want with the rest of it!

Q: You have also performed in many pantos so know first hand what it’s like to perform – does this help when you’re directing the show?

A: Definitely. I’ve triumphed and died a death on that stage many times – I feel that I know what works. It’s a great training ground for learning what lands with our audiences. It’s a very forgiving environment, though. If something goes wrong, you must embrace it, seize it as an opportunity and create a fun moment with it. As an actor, I’ve felt the pulse of the panto and know how thrilling it can be. I’ll still be chasing that buzz albeit from the other side of the auditorium.

Q: For one year only the Rock ‘n’ Roll panto will take place in a big top tent, how does this change things?

A: In many ways it’s the same panto magic… but bigger, bouncier and bolder! We have a 960-seat auditorium with a great spot for every single audience member because of how the three-sided thrust stage works. I can’t promise that anyone can hide from our super-soaker water pistols but the seats will be comfy, the venue will be warm and the atmosphere will be electric. Being in a different venue does also allow us to revisualize the design of our pantos in a new way which is really invigorating and Adrian Gee has done a fantastic job there.

Q: You’ve performed in a previous version of Sleeping Beauty – what makes it such a great panto?

A: It’s a classic and its story is an easy one to follow. Our brilliant panto writer, Christian Patterson has tinkered with the plot and its characters to bring a new life to this classic. His pantos bagged two of the UK Best Panto Awards last year and with Adrian’s dazzling design I think we’ve got a fresh and fun retelling with plenty of twists and turns. Our brilliant Musical Director, Tayo Akinbode takes care of the songs and we have it all to play for! n

Sleeping Beauty can be seen at Theatr Clwyd (Big Top) from Thursday 30th November 2023 to Saturday 6th January 2024.

I’ve had a fitful sleep, disturbed by strange cries and odd flurries of urgent whispering. So when I turn my head and look to the window, my head swims. The sky is still dark, it must be only five o’clock in the morning.

There’s a tremendous whirling of crows. Black crows against a grey sky. They’re tumbling and cartwheeling in a wild storm. For a few more seconds I can’t remember where I am. But then a sharp pain in the crook of my arm reminds me that the vampire is coming soon.

And so I know where I am. I’m in Aran ward. On the top floor of Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Not yet dawn, but the nurses are already rousing us all with a few gentle words and the busyness of their early morning routine. I wake up properly and look at the storm of crows. The pain in my arm reminds that ‘the vampire’ is coming again soon... that’s the nickname for the nurse whose job every day is to go from ward to ward and patient to patient, taking blood.

No, I’m not in my own stately room in the high tower of a castle. But Ysbyty Gwynedd is actually far bigger and more intricately formidable than any of the real, famous castles of North Wales.

It’s a vast complex, with an enormous, ever-changing team of staff looking after the needs of nearly 500 patients. Part of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Trust, along with other hospitals such as Glan Clwyd along the coast at Bodelwyddan, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay, there are literally scores of different kinds of staff... from cleaners and gardeners and orderlies, to the vast bureaucracy of administrators, to the

medical practitioners... the nurses and doctors and surgeons who are the front line of our NHS.

I’m thinking, even King Edward I, after the heavy burden of enforcing his power over Gwynedd and building his mighty castles, would have quailed at the logistical challenge of our modern day hospitals. I’ve Googled it – more than 70,000 people work in these great centres of healthcare in North Wales, quite a lot more than all of old Edward Longshanks’ armies and castle builders.

I’ve had time to watch and marvel at some of these workers. Seven days ago I came into A&E with a worrying pain, thinking I might see a doctor and go home with some reassurance and few pills. But the doctors were worried, and after testing my blood and temperature and blood pressure, they kept me in. A whole week later I’ve moved from ward to ward a few times, and on this dark, turbulent morning in October I’m waking up in Aran ward...

The same nurses who made sure I’d had my medication the night before and then put me to bed and plumped my pillows are there to help me resurface. They’re as cheerful and calm as they were when I fell asleep. They’re amazing. They’re tireless – no they must be very tired, nearing the end of their shifts – they seem indefatigable, unflappable. I woke a few times during the night when they were helping other patients in distress – strange, staccato cries of elderly men in different states of discomfort and confusion... and the low, sometimes urgent voices of the nurses, tackling every problem in front of them. They’ve been working all night, while I’ve been fitfully sleeping. Yes, they’re amazing. They’re special people.

Oh, and here’s ‘the vampire’. She uses the term herself, by way of introduction and to get me sitting up and extending my poor defenceless arm. But she’s really a small, smiling

NWM 2023 Page 21

lady who attaches a kind of tourniquet to what I used to call my bicep, swabs her target clean and then administers ‘a sharp scratch’. I don’t feel a thing, as she fills two or three vials. A minute later she’s moved on to her next victim, in her apparently insatiable quest for blood.

And so another long day is dawning. The sky lightens, the wind howls, and the crows are flung up and down and tossed like rags. They must like it, because all the gulls and pigeons must be sheltering sensibly somewhere – only the crows, in a mad dance with an autumn storm.

There’s breakfast with tea or coffee at about nine. And then it’s time to think about stirring my lazy stumps and having a shave and a shower and returning all pink and fragrant to find my bed freshly re-made. We’re all encouraged to get up and about and stay out of bed. There’s a good deal of conversation with the nurses and with other patients – by the end of this particular morning and the imminent arrival of lunch I’ve learned from my neighbours about topics as varied as oil-fired boilers and antique silver and the mysteries of reincarnation.

Yes, we talk, in different wards in Ysbyty Gwynedd. It’s completely natural, part of the culture of the National Health Service here in Gwynedd, unlike hospitals I’ve been into in other countries. I’m thinking of Thailand, where the wards are like an extension of the town outside, loud with shouting and redolent of all kinds of street food, because whole families move in to stay with a stricken relative, camping on the floor all around and underneath the patient’s bed. And I’m thinking of France, by way of a complete contrast, where a hospital’s corridors are so cold and clinical that anyone would feel quite uncouth to raise their voice above a whisper – and by the way, where the nurses have no concept of a kindly bedside manner but only their cultivated and offputting froideur

And the views? I know most people don’t talk about the views the hospitals have when they’re discussing the state our NHS. But me, waking on a storm-blasted October morning and a murder of crows at my window, I’m thinking for a few befuddled seconds that I must be in a windswept mountain castle...

Gogarth ward, with one of the best views of Snowdonia you’ll ever have. I’m in my own eyrie, as it were, with the forests and folded foothills and the great rocky outcrops of the mountain summits... my own eyrie, in Eryri, and it’s the same aspect from Glyder ward as well.

Now I’m waking on the other side of the building, in Aran ward, and as the dawn breaks and the sky lightens, there’s a panorama of practically the whole of Ynys Mon, a land of myth and mystery as far back as the Druids and Celts and the Romans. Anglesey, with an ancient brooding history which sits comfortably with the present day: the port at Holyhead, the nuclear power station at Wylfa, the cutting-edge industry of Anglesey Aluminium and the hi-technology of RAF Valley.

I’m feeling better already. I’m well fed and holding a cup of coffee. I’ve shaved and showered and performed other bodily functions which the nurses like to ask me about. My blood has been drawn painlessly from my arm and sent to the lab –and if everything’s clear I’ll be sent home again.

Our National Health Service is truly a national treasure, to be cherished and protected at all costs. A strange irony – we banged our pots and pans and clapped and cheered, as the NHS strove to help us through the pandemic, and now we’re quibbling over the doctors’ and nurses’ claim for better pay.

Me, I give my own heartfelt thanks to the marvellous team in Ysbyty Gwynedd. But what a conundrum – I’m in a remarkable place, with exceptionally clever and kind people, and I can’t wait to get out and go home! n

Stephen Gregory’s first novel, The Cormorant, which he wrote in Snowdonia 35 years ago, has been published several times in both the UK and the USA, and translated into German, Polish and Italian. The new edition, which is available from Parthian Books, is its tenth publication.

Something old…

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”. We’ve all heard this rhyme – but what does it mean? Well, the “something old” represents the bride’s past, while “something new” signifies the couple’s future. “Something borrowed” symbolizes borrowed happiness, while “something blue” stands for fidelity and love.

Feeling

superstitious?

Weddings are surrounded by superstition – but whether you choose to follow these ten time-honoured traditions is up to you!

Rain on your wedding day

While many couples dread rain on their big day (especially if they have planned an outdoor ceremony!) there are numerous reasons to believe that rain is actually good luck. One reason is because it signifies that your marriage will last the test of time – the theory being that a wet knot is extremely hard to untie, so rain on the day that you ‘tie the knot’ can only be a good thing.

The veil

Again this tradition harks back to when the groom hadn’t seen the bride prior to the ceremony. The veil wasn’t lifted until after vows had been exchanged, meaning that it was too late for the groom to change his mind if he didn’t like what he saw!

Seeing each other before your big day

This tradition dates back to the time of arranged marriages, when people believed that if the couple saw each other before the ceremony, it would give them a chance to change their minds about the wedding… Today many people actually choose to have breakfast together on their big day – it will probably the only time that you get to spend alone!

NWM 2023 Page 31

Throwing the bouquet

In medieval times it was considered good luck to touch the bride – and even better luck to grab a piece of her wedding dress or veil. So in order to avoid being physically grabbed at, brides began throwing their bouquets to distract their guests and make them chase after the flowers, instead of her and her gown. The flowers were still believed to bring romantic luck for the future, and now mean that whoever manages to catch it is next in line to tie the knot.

Throwing confetti

The tradition of throwing confetti over the bride and groom comes from Italy. Before paper confetti, flowers, petals, grain or rice were thrown at the happy couple to encourage prosperity and fertility. Today confetti comes in all shapes and sizes, but natural petals remain the most venue-friendly!

Going on a honeymoon

“Honeymoon” didn’t always refer to a romantic getaway… In the 5th Century newlywed couples would drink mead, a honey-based alcohol, after their first “moon” together as a married couple. The mead was usually a gift from their wedding guests, and it was believed to have aphrodisiac properties to help with conception.

Knives as a wedding gift

According to folklore, a knife signifies a broken relationship and is bad luck to give as a wedding gift. If knives are on your gift list, then you need to give the guest a penny – that way it’s a purchase, not a present

Cutting the cake

The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where revellers broke a loaf of bread over a bride’s head for fertility’s sake. Today, the cake is cut together as a symbol of unity

Carrying the bride over the threshold

There are actually numerous theories for this one… In Medieval Europe, if the groom carried the bride over the threshold then she avoided looking too eager about consummating the marriage. Meanwhile Western Europeans believed that a bride who tripped over the threshold of her new home would bring bad luck to her home and her marriage – so being carried was one way to avoid the mishap. However, ancient cultures believed that a bride was extra vulnerable to evil spirits through the soles of her feet. To avoid bringing in any evil spirits, the groom carried the bride into their new home.

Discovering the Llŷn Peninsula

Aled Hughes challenged himself to walk over 80 miles along the Llŷn Peninsula this year. Now, as a guide for anyone who’s looking to explore the Llŷn, Aled and the Wales Coast Path have partnered to produce a list of Llŷn ‘musts’…

Over the last year, one of BBC Radio Cymru’s most notable presenters, Aled Hughes, set himself a challenge – to walk 83 miles (132 km) of the Wales Coast Path, along the Llŷn Peninsula following the Wales Coast Path’s official guidebook.

In a bid to inspire residents and visitors to get to know his local area, Aled documented the journey from Trefor to Porthmadog via a series of videos. Over the eight-day walk, Aled shared updates about his trek, alongside fun facts, and anecdotes about local points of interest along the way, including Nant Gwrtheyrn and Porth Neigwl.

“We really are fortunate to have this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty right on our doorstep – and such a well-established coast path which allows us to explore it so easily,” explained Aled. “Whilst the eight-day walk was challenging at times, it really helped me reconnect with the area where I was born and raised, and that means so much to me. The routes through Nant Gwrtheyrn, viewing Ynys Enlli from Mynydd Mawr and from Porth Colmon to Aberdaron were certainly highlights, to name but a few.”

The walk was arranged in partnership with the Wales Coast Path and Ecoamgueddfa – an eco-museum in Pen Llŷn which tackles to promotes travel which balances people, place, and respect for the environment – while genuinely prompting people to live better lives.

Following his Wales Coast Path adventure, here are Aled’s five

‘top tips’ for getting the very most out of exploring the Llŷn…

1) Plan your trip in advance

There are nearly 100 miles of coastline to explore along Llŷn – with something for everyone, regardless of your mobility level or special interests. But there’s so much to explore that planning in advance is an absolute must! Luckily, the Wales Coast Path’s official Llŷn guidebook (which is also available in

NWM 2023 Page 39
THERE ARE NEARLY 100 MILES OF COASTLINE TO EXPLORE ALONG LLŶN –WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF YOUR MOBILITY LEVEL OR SPECIAL INTERESTS

Welsh) documents everything you need to know, allowing you to plan a perfect trip to suit your needs. It certainly helped me on my 2023 adventure!

2) Check out the three peaks of Yr Eifl

That’s right, the Llŷn has its very own take on the three peaks challenge! So, take a small detour from the coast and follow a circular route to take on Garn For, Garn Ganol and Tre’r Ceiri –with the tallest peak standing at 561 metres.

And don’t worry, you’ll never be far from the sea as you climb – with breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline as far as the eye can see once you get to the summit. The perfect reward for your efforts!

3) Make the most of the local food and drink offerings

As well as there being plenty to see and do, there’s also plenty to eat and drink around the Llŷn! Those passing Nefyn should visit the Cwrw Llŷn brewery to taste and stock up on the local ales; meanwhile, Caffi Meinir is a must-stop for delicious homemade lunches in Nant Gwrtheyrn. And don’t forget Porthdinllaen’s famous Ty Coch Inn – a friendly, beachfront pub which is the perfect spot for watching the sun go down after a long day’s walking.

4) Practice your Welsh

The Welsh language can be heard in almost every shop, restaurant, and café on the Llŷn Peninsula – making it the perfect place to practice your Welsh as you explore. So, why not start by greeting passers-by with a simple ‘sumae’ (hello), ‘bore da’ (good morning) or ‘prynhawn da’ (good afternoon) to get you started?

What’s more, the former quarrying village of Nant Gwrtheyrn is home to the National Welsh Language and Heritage Centre which attracts over 30,000 visitors a year, and welcomes hundreds to its intensive residential Welsh learner courses.

5) Keep your eyes peeled for wonderful Welsh wildlife

With thanks to the gulf stream which provides warmer sea temperatures and weather, the Llŷn is home to an array of unusual habitats and fascinating wildlife.

From grey seals and bottlenose dolphins to puffins, visitors to the Llŷn are never far away from a wildlife encounter – but a great place to start is an afternoon with Bardsey Island Boat Trips. Following an ancient pilgrim route on a fast modern boat, boat trippers will be treated to a diverse spectacle of seabirds, seals, and porpoises amid spectacular scenery.

“Aled’s vlogs will be a very useful resource for local people and visitors to the area for years to come,” said Gwenan Griffith, Digital Community Officer at Ecoamgueddfa. “There is so much history and interesting stories connected to the coast of Pen Llŷn, and Aled’s vlogs, the Llŷn Coastal Path book and walking guides on the Ecoamgueddfa website encompasses the rich natural and cultural heritage we have here in Pen Llŷn.” n

Flamenco and poetry meet opera as Welsh National Opera’s autumn season opens with Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar.

Reimaging the life of one of Spain’s most famous poets and playwrights – Federico García Lorca – the story follows this artist as he is targeted by the Fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War.

The opera not only explores Lorca’s life and death through the memories of his friend and muse actress Margarita Xirgu, it also highlights Lorca’s great love of Andalusian folklore, history and music – particularly flamenco.

And it is the multi-faceted nature of Lorca’s character which ensures he is such a pleasure to portray, says Polish mezzosoprano Hanna Hipp, who plays the poet in the opera which opens at Venue Cymru, Llandudno on Tuesday 10th October.

“It’s always a big treat for an artist to be given a role which is so complex,” she says. “Lorca is a historical character and yet he speaks at a very loud volume, particularly in the political context of today’s world.”

The part of Lorca is what is known as a ‘trouser’ role in which a male character is performed by a woman. Hanna has built

up a strong reputation for trouser roles including Cherubino in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.

“I’ve been very fortunate to do some fabulous trouser roles. I love them dearly,” she says. “It’s wonderful to be given an opportunity to be a different gender. It’s a totally different way of moving your body – the physicality changes immensely.”

Directed by Deborah Colker, best known for choreographing dance and Cirque du Soleil shows, Ainadamar requires the singers to pull on their dance shoes and perform flamenco alongside professional dancers. For Hanna it is a challenge –but one she relishes. “This is the first time I’m doing something like this with such specific dance in an opera. It’s quite a big task as it’s not my culture at all but we want to stay true to the piece and really dive into it.”

The whole experience has been a new discovery for the singer. “I was quite surprised when I listened to it for the first time. The score is fabulous, it’s so alive with its rhythms and instrumentation. One really wants to dance to it but it also has gravitas. There are moments of light and hope but ultimately everything leads towards an ending which is truly tragic and mysterious...” n

Exploring The Bee Gees’ legacy: decades, authors, and a memorable book tour

The Bee Gees, a legendary band with a career spanning seven decades, have made an indelible mark on the world of music. Their impressive legacy includes over 200 million records sold, induction into multiple prestigious Halls of Fame, and numerous awards recognising their extraordinary talent. Billboard magazine ranks them among the top three most successful bands in popular music history. It’s no wonder that their story and music continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

“Decades: The Bee Gees in the 1960s” and “Decades: The Bee Gees in the 1970s” are the first two volumes in a series of four books that provide an in-depth exploration of this iconic band’s journey. Authored by a trio of world-renowned Bee Gees experts, each hailing from different corners of the world, Andrew Môn Hughes, representing Holyhead, Anglesey in Wales, Grant Walters, hailing from Columbus, Ohio, USA, and Mark Crohan, from Melbourne, Australia, these volumes meticulously dissect The Bee Gees’ discography album-byalbum, song-by-song. They delve into not only the group’s collective work but also the individual endeavours of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, shedding light on their development as performers, songwriters, and recording artists.

“Decades: The Bee Gees in the 1960s” was published in late 2021, marking the first instalment of the series. It vividly recounts the brothers’ early years and the challenges they overcame to achieve international recognition as artists. The book features forewords written by former Bee Gee, Vince Melouney, who numbered five members in the late 1960s, and Spencer Gibb, son of Robin Gibb, providing a personal and contextual perspective on their journey.

“Decades: The Bee Gees in the 1970s,” the eagerly awaited second volume, was released in 2023. It navigates The Bee Gees’ tumultuous yet transformative decade, marked by a

rollercoaster of highs and lows. The brothers began the 1970s as a fractured group, but by the end of the decade, they were a global music sensation. Their works from this period transcended genres and generations.

This book offers readers over 300 pages of fresh interviews and previously undiscovered facts, painting a comprehensive portrait of The Bee Gees in the 1970s. Spencer Gibb once again provides a foreword, setting the cultural and musical context for the book’s content.

To celebrate the release of these captivating books, the authors embarked on a book tour that included talks in significant locations connected to The Bee Gees’ history. Notably, they visited Thame, Oxfordshire, where Robin Gibb lived, and is buried at St. Mary’s church. This pilgrimage was a heartfelt homage to the band’s legacy. Additionally, the tour included a stop at Bragdy Cybi in Andrew’s hometown of Holyhead.

The authors also engaged in a number of radio interviews and made a television appearance on S4C’s evening magazine programme Heno, spreading The Bee Gees’ story and their passion for this iconic band. n

Tales from the towers

Stephen Gregory knows a thing or two about Caernarfon Castle… But is it the stories themselves or the way he tells them that make them so fascinating?

Working as a tour guide in Caernarfon Castle over eight summer seasons, I’ve been along those venerable battlements and up and down the towers more than 3,000 times.

My friends have often asked me if I’m not completely and utterly bored by repeating the same facts and anecdotes so many times. And I always say no, I’m not, because every group of visitors is uniquely different.

There might be a group of 50 elderly punters, who want everything loud and clear without a lot of detail... and without clambering the towers.

There might be a seriously academic American couple, very pleased because they’ve got me to themselves, and they want the whole story and nothing less than the whole story, and clambering to the top of every tower.

And of course there are ebullient young Aussies, who like a bit of light entertainment, a few jokes and even a flavour of scandal. And school groups, fidgety teenagers with a couple of teachers trying not to look stressed...

A coach party from Korea or Bosnia Herzegovina, with their own interpreter who seems to take several long minutes translating each one of my short sentences... And in nearly every group there are punters who would rather be shopping somewhere or, even better, having steak n’ kidney pie in the Black Boy with a pint of real Welsh ale.

And me too, occasionally I might have been feeling less than enthusiastic about starting yet another tour. And so I might’ve embellished my patter to lighten the mood, according to the kind of responses I’m getting from the group.

Anything to do with ghosts will do the trick. The ‘real’ ghost stories from inside Caernarfon castle are a bit thin and hazy. So I add a bit of flesh on their ethereal bones.

There’s Nobby. He roams the dark corridors between the Queen’s Gate and the Black Tower. He was a soldier, garrisoned in the early 1300s, an Englishman originally from Nottingham and quite disgruntled about his posting to Wales. And occasionally, as you pause in the Black Tower to marvel at the massive thickness of the walls, he will brush past you, actually shove you aside, and you can smell beer on his breath and the rancid odour of his clothes. That’s Nobby, I tell the group, and ask them to stand very quietly and sniff the air... yes, he’s here, nearby, his ghostly breath is in your nostrils. And someone will always smell him. We exchange nervous glances and hurry out into the sunshine.

Cross to the King’s gate, with its gruesome display of portcullis grooves and murder holes – even better, from this entrance to the castle you can see across crowds of other tourists to the old gaol and courthouse. And if you’re lucky you might see a grey, rather stooped and furtive figure mingling with the crowd – he glances up and meets your eye and there’s a strangely bitter smile on his face. He’s Herbert Briggs, who brutally murdered his wife and was the last man to be hanged in Caernarfon. Someone in the group will always see him, because nearly everybody looks up at the King’s Gate as they go by. ‘There he is, I see him!’ someone in my group calls out and points excitedly...

NWM 2023 Page 53

And there’s poor Ceri, in the ground floor of the Eagle Tower. A boy, only 11 or 12, one of a team of boys who were employed to put up the scaffolding in the earliest days and months of the building project in 1283 and 1284. Poor Ceri – you might sometimes hear his laboured breathing and the curious dragging of his feet. The scaffolding boys were hired because of their agility, but Ceri slipped and fell from the top of a wooden ladder and broke his right leg – it was an icy winter and his bones healed badly, leaving him too crippled to work again. Listen carefully, hold your breath, and you might hear him... a gasp of pain, his poor broken leg reminding him forever of his fall...

Not always ghosts. You can tell if your punters are going to be susceptible to the conjuring of ectoplasm. But the mention of famous people who have been in Caernarfon Castle is another way of lightening my tour and steering away from too much history.

Of course the earliest celebrities to visit were historical – you can’t get away from King Edward 1st himself and his wife Eleanor of Castile, both undoubtedly A-list. Occasionally I tell the story of Genghis Khan’s visit to Caernarfon, arriving with an entourage all the way from the desolate steppes of Mongolia and sweeping into the castle with a black panther on a chain, a gift for the king. I’ve read the account somewhere, I can’t remember where, and it’s almost certainly untrue, quite impossible and historically inaccurate. But it’s rather exotic, and you can imagine a summit meeting of the two formidable monarchs, in front of a blazing fire in the highest stateroom of the Eagle Tower, with the great black cat purring in the warmth of the flames.

More recently, Lord Snowdon, of course. As Anthony Armstrong-Jones he was married to Princess Margaret, until they later divorced. As Lord Snowdon, he held the high office of Constable of Caernarfon Castle and visited many times, especially during the preparations for the investiture in 1969.

The investiture? The castle was full of A-list celebrities for

both of those, I mean royalty and the most senior politicians. In 1911 a young man, looking like a slender, shivering boy, was crowned Prince of Wales – who would later in his life become King Edward VIII and spark the abdication crisis, when he gave up the throne to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

And an even more spectacular event in 1969, when Prince Charles was invested as Prince of Wales by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II... But the group is fidgeting a bit. Some of them are thinking about that pie and a beer in the Black Boy. So here’s an extraordinary thing – did you watch The Crown, the recent television series about the innermost workings of our royal family? Did you know that the budget for the single episode which portrayed the 1969 investiture was bigger than the cost of the real thing?

And then we’ve had low-key visits from William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during the time when he was stationed as a helicopter pilot at RAF Valley on Ynys Mon... Oh, and there’s Bryn Terfel, the world famous baritone, born and brought up a few miles away in Pant Glas, who’s more familiar these days with the opera houses of London, Paris and New York. He has delighted audiences in several concerts within the walls of the castle...

Ghosts? Celebrities? Caernarfon Castle certainly has a long and sometimes turbulent history, so there’s no likelihood of getting bored of re-telling it, in scores or hundreds of ways. Three thousand times, and counting, and no two tours have ever been the same. And the punters always hear the truth, the whole truth – and sometimes a little embellishment of the truth. n

Stephen Gregory’s first novel, The Cormorant, which he wrote in Snowdonia 35 years ago, has been published several times in both the UK and the USA, and translated into German, Polish and Italian. The new edition, which is available from Parthian Books, is its tenth publication.

Food for thought

Well, let’s not keep pretending. Summer is well and truly finished and autumn is now officially upon us. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise; they’ve had Halloween stuff in the shops for the past six weeks. Time to vacpack all our bright summer clothes and hide them away for another year. By the end of the month, it’ll be dark by the time the kids get back from school.

Well, we can mope all we like but I love the autumn. I love how the countryside turns into a firework display of copper, gold and orange. It’s crunchy woodland path time and

the season for long outdoor walks ending up in warm pubs. Also, let’s face it, TV gets a lot better at this time of year.

It’s also the time for rich, hearty food again, for hand-warming soups and tummy-filling casseroles. This is when food like beetroot, quince, swede, cabbage, chard, blackberries and apples come into their own. Here’s a recipe that combines two very autumnal things that go together like a horse and carriage – black pudding and apples. Bet you’ve never seen them paired up like this before though…

Set the oven to 240°C. Slice the tops off the apples to make lids, scoop out the centre of the apples, (I found an oyster knife ideal for this) smear the inside with butter and season lightly. Put the apples and lids on a baking tray and glaze with melted butter, cook in the oven for about ten minutes, basting regularly.

In a pan, heat up a little butter, remove the skins from the black pudding, chop it up and cook over low heat for about five minutes, or until soft. Drain the raisins and add them and the nuts to the pan, mixing together thoroughly. Stuff the apples with the mixture, balance the lids back on them for another five minutes. Serve with a green salad and mustard dressing. n

The reality of retirement affordability

The “cost of living crisis” is a phrase that is hard to avoid in any media. High inflation, stealthily increasing taxation and constrained earnings growth are an unwelcome combination that leaves few of us unaffected. In time, the crisis should pass. It is easy to forget now that a little over two years ago, in July 2021, inflation was bang on the Bank of England’s target, at 2.0%.

The understandable focus on today’s living costs does not mean that future cost of living issues have disappeared.

The latest data, published in January 2023, show that in 2022 the yearly cost of a minimum retirement lifestyle increased from £10,900 to £12,800 (18%) for a single person and from £16,700 to £19,900 (19%) for a couple.

The new forecast starts with projections based on the current savings and behaviours of individuals and takes a comprehensive view of sources of retirement income,

including pensions, other long-term savings, inheritance, and accounts for any housing costs.

The main conclusion is that over a third of the population are not on target to achieve even the minimum lifestyle standard when they reach retirement.

It makes sense to find out which retirement outcome you are on track to achieve, as the sooner you know, the more time you have to adjust your plans accordingly. n

The value of pensions and investments and the income they produce can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

INSPIRING STORIES OF THRIVING AFTER BRAIN INJURY TO BE SHARED AT CONFERENCE

North Wales law firm Lanyon Bowdler is bringing together inspiring individuals who have done just that, as part of the Thriving After Brain Injury conference.

The event is expected to attract professionals working with, and people living with, brain injury from across the country – with former captain of the England and GB hockey team, Alex Danson MBE, and GB paralympic footballer, Jack Rutter, headlining an impressive panel of speakers.

“We are delighted to be welcoming a range of people, some of whom will share stories of incredible courage and resilience, with others discussing the very latest in rehabilitation and support services,” said Dawn Humphries, head of the personal injury team at Lanyon Bowdler. “A big thank you to all of our speakers for giving up their time to be part of this important event, and I would also like to thank our sponsors, ARAG, Frenkel Topping Group and No5 Barristers Chambers. We hope as many people as possible will join us for what is sure to be an inspiring, educational and uplifting day.”

Alongside Alex Danson MBE and Jack Rutter, speakers will include Andrew Worthington, a consultant in

neuropsychology and rehabilitation with Headwise, Hannah Wright, a brain injury coordinator and counsellor at Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, and Daniel Thomas, a qualified music therapist at Chroma.

Stephanie Webster, of Frenkel Topping Group, said: “Frenkel Topping are beyond excited to support and attend the upcoming Thriving After Brain Injury conference and to celebrate those who have not only overcome life-changing injuries but have thrived despite adversity.

“We’re looking forward to hearing stories and insights from other experts in this industry that will no doubt inspire us all.”

William Theaker, practice director at No5 Barristers’ Chambers, added: “We are thrilled to be sponsors of the Thriving After Brain Injury event with Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors. No5’s Henry Pitchers KC and Chris Bright KC join a great line-up of speakers on the day.”

Mike Knight, of ARAG, said: “We are committed to supporting and facilitating access to justice through our legal insurance services, so we are delighted to be part of an event like this which will help build understanding of the challenges injured people face. Lanyon Bowdler is an outstanding firm of lawyers and we are proud to work with them. .n

The Thriving After Brain Injury conference will be held at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury on March 6th 2024, and tickets are available now – for more information visit www. lblaw.co.uk/press-and-events/events-and-seminars

THE ROUTE

1. Tŷ Hyll has been restored by the Snowdonia Society and includes a honey bee exhibition as well as the fine tea rooms. The garden is designed for pollinators and well worth a visit after your refreshments! Start the main walk up the steep minor road from Tŷ Hyll past ‘The Towers’ Outdoor Education Centre and turn right onto the forest track.

2. Follow the track until it forks, taking the marked footpath left up steps into the trees. Wind up through oak, holly and conifer woodland which is great for fungi in autumn. At the waymarker post, carry straight on.

3. Cross the forest track and continue up the path. In spring and summer, listen for willow warbler and chiffchaff and look for redstart and foliose lichens. At the junction, carry straight ahead, ignoring the cycle routes. Follow the path up left through a break in the wall and zig-zag up the hill. Continue through the conifer woodland to the Ty’n Llwyn car park and picnic site.

4. Enjoy the view over the Llugwy valley to Arenig Fawr. The slope is a haze of bluebells in spring and there are flowers such as tormentil, bird’s-foot trefoil and violets on the lefthand bank. Look for speckled wood and meadow brown butterflies. Turn right out of the car park and continue walking along the road.

5. After approximately 100 metres, turn sharp left onto a path which leads uphill through the woodland.

6. Cross the wide Gwydir Mawr trail track, and follow the willow- and birch-fringed track straight on until it descends on a narrow path to Llyn Bodgynydd. Look on the lake for great crested grebe and red-breasted merganser.

7. Turn right and follow the lakeside path which leads to Cors Bodgynydd Nature Reserve, looking out for butterwort and sundew. Go through the gate and carry straight on, passing the old Cyffty lead and zinc mines on your right and a smaller lake to your left.

8. Take a short diversion from the main path on to a rocky outcrop where you can enjoy extensive views across the nature reserve. Here, look for emperor dragonfly, black-tailed skimmer and variable damselfly – and other related species! At dusk in early summer, this is a good spot to see nightjar and hear them churring as they feed on insects over the bog. Return to the path, looking out for devil’s-bit scabious and bog asphodel.

9. At the reserve gate, turn right on to the road which runs parallel to the nature reserve. Look out for fungi in autumn and roding woodcock on summer evenings, and listen for the tinkling of goldcrest in the trees.

10. At the road junction, turn right, noting meadowsweet alongside the road.

11. After approximately 250 metres, turn right onto the forest track and Gwydir Mawr trail, passing ragwort, willowherb and heather and looking for crossbill and summer butterflies. Continue straight on at the crossroads and, after 400 metres, bear left along the track. You can enjoy fine views of Moel Siabod as the track descends. Where the main track bends right, take the track to the left.

12. Continue on this track until you re-join the road and turn right. Continue steeply downhill to complete your walk at Tŷ Hyll. Time for tea and cake! n

"No Matter What"

No Matter What is a powerful picture book which aims to teach children about lo and he message being that death does not the memories you shared with the person that has died.

Small said: “But what about when you’re dead and gone? Would you love me then? Does love go on?”

Large held Small snug as they looked out at the night, at the moon in the dark and the stars shining bright.

“Small, look at the stars – how they shine and glow. Yet some of those stars died a long time ago. Still they shine in the evening skies… love, like starlight, never dies.”
